Bark Busters offer helpful tips to keep your dog safe on bonfire night and during storms Lynn Prentice Bark Busters’ behavioural therapist for Herts and Essex encourages dog owners to take extra care of their pets around bonfire night. “Bonfire night is traditionally a time of celebration and fun,” says Lynn, “but for animals it is quite a different story. Many dogs are literally sent into a frenzy of terror when fireworks explode. Many will run madly in a blind panic causing damage or worse still running out into the path of oncoming cars. Some lose control of their bodily functions, while others will bark or howl.” Although we cannot totally remove the fear that fireworks and storms cause, we can help our dogs to feel secure. some helpful tips to remember If you are going to a fireworks display, leave your dog at home where he will be safe and comfortable. Never leave him in the car, the bang of the exploding fireworks can be amplified in a car and could frighten your dog even more. Always keep proper identification securely fastened to your dog’s collar in case he gets out. Ask your vet about implanting a microchip and make sure your contact details are up to date. Don’t leave your dog outside. If you cannot bring him inside, cover his kennel with a blanket to protect him from the bursts of bright lights and loud bangs. A dog’s sense of hearing is acute, over 10 times more sensitive than ours.

6

Dogs should be given a small, dark space so they can run and hide when the “fun” starts. Some like to hide in cupboards or under the bed. Some dogs become destructive when frightened and anxious. If you don’t use a crate, remove any items in the room which your dog could destroy or which could harm him when chewed. Turn on a TV or radio at normal volume to distract your dog from loud noises and help him relax. If possible, stay with your pet during the fireworks, your dog may react more intensely to loud sounds and flashes of light when you are not with him. In extreme circumstances your vet may be able to suggest a remedy that suits your particular dog. Lynn Prentice Bark Busters

Remembrance Day and the Two Minute Silence have been observed since the end of the First World War, but their relevance remains undiminished. When we bow our heads in reflection, we remember those who fought for our freedom during the two World Wars. But we also mourn and honour those who have lost their lives in more recent conflicts. Today, with troops on duty in Afghanistan and other trouble spots around the world, Remembrance, and this two minute tribute is as important as ever. Services will be held across the district on Sunday 4th November and on Remembrance Sunday 11th November. The services will give the opportunity to remember and reflect on the lives of service men and women who have given their lives defending our country and our freedom, 'lest we forget'.

blast from the past The clocks have gone back and it’s time to turn thrifty. Let’s go back to the past and rediscover retro. We’ve selected some of the craftiest craft books that will have you feeling all warm and nostalgic in no time. With the holiday season just around the corner, it’s perfect timing. Remember: homemade gifts are for life, not just for Christmas!

Make Do and Mend: Keeping Family and Home Afloat on War Rations by Jill Norman Duck the double-dip recession and take a leaf out of this reproduction 1940’s instruction manual. If you’re planning a trip to Primark, think again; there may be some lost treasure in your wardrobe that can be transformed. This book is a lovely stroll down memory lane, with design ideas and simple instructions on making do with the homemade. You’ll certainly give more careful consideration to what pattern curtains you buy in the future.

Kirstie’s Vintage Home by Kirstie Allsopp When does shabby become chic? Kirstie Allsopp knows. As we continue to embrace vintage pieces, she’s helping us to find inspiration in fabric, crafts and techniques. With tips and hints on how to find, restore and rejuvenate furniture and everyday objects, you’ll have everything you need to make sure you end up with a piece to treasure. The buzz-word of the day is ‘upcycling’, and we’re not talking the Tour de France.

26

The Complete Book of Retro Crafts: Collecting, Displaying & Making Crafts of the Past by Suzie Millions This book is like eating a FAB lolly while bouncing on a space hopper in a puff-ball skirt. It’s so retro it should be illegal. There are 40 projects with hints and tips on collecting and creating, ‘junking’ and hunting. Every charity shop and flea market will become a veritable treasuretrove. If quirky and old-school is your thing, then this book’s for you.

Country Cottage Quilting: 15 Quilt Projects Combining Stitchery with Patchwork by Lynette Anderson Remember the movie ‘How to Make an American Quilt’? Well, our pick is more Antipodean than American. Australian designer Lynette Anderson has some beautiful ‘country cottage’ designs and shows you all the sewing and appliqué you’ll need to complete your own project. Just snuggling -up with the book and a cuppa will envelope you like…well, a big, fluffy quilt.

Crochet For Children by Claire Montgomerie The craft that modernity forgot is making a comeback and this book will hook your children. All the basics are covered and there are 35 mini projects for them to tackle, everything from scarves to teddy bears. It’s fun for all the family when you’re drying off in front of the fire on ‘bath night’. If you’re going seventies, then you may as well go the whole hog.

Scrapbook Secrets by Kimber McGray The art of scrapbooking should not be restricted to French exchange trips and Brownies badge projects. In this digital age we’ve loosened our grip on the tangible. In ‘Scrapbook Secrets’, Kimber McGray shares her tips on how to turn your memories into a masterpiece by rediscovering the art of decoupage, collage and collecting. With step-bystep instructions, you’ll be able to preserve your most cherished memories and family history, incorporated into your own work of art. Throw out the digital camera and buy a glue stick and some glitter. Then…go nuts!

Forest Town Church is a lively group of friends who love God and are passionate about His kingdom . The church had its start in Watford but then we bought and renovated a warehouse on Lyon Way, St Albans and that has been our home for the last four years. We desire that our being here will be good for the communities in and around St Albans and we have developed a number of key relationships that are enabling us to contribute where we can. Jesus is our greatest hope and our highest boast. Jesus is who we long for and he is the one who brings the deepest joy to our lives. Jesus is the one who inspires the songs that we sing in worship and he inspires the focus and the passion with which we preach. And if you would like to know more about him do come and join us on a Sunday morning at 10am. For more information visit www.foresttownchurch.org

a significant find A nationally significant find of 159 late Roman gold coins was discovered in the north of St Albans in October The find is believed to be one of the largest ever discovered in the UK and dates to the end of Roman rule in Britain. The coins, called solidus were mostly struck in the Italian cities of Milan and Ravenna and issued under the Emperors Gratian, Valentinian, Theodosius, Arcadius and Honorius. David Thorold, Prehistory to Medieval Curator at Verulamium Museum in St Albans said: “During the period of the Roman occupation of Britain, coins were usually buried for two reasons. As religious sacrifice to the Gods or as a secure store of wealth, with the aim of later recovery. Threat of war or raids might lead to burial in the latter case, as may the prospect of a long journey or any other risky activity. Gold solidi were extremely valuable coins and were not traded or exchanged on a regular basis. They would have been used for large transactions such as buying land or goods by the shipload.” Talk: The Roman Gold Coins Hoard, Verulamium Museum, St Albans For those wishing to find out more, a talk has been planned for Thursday 1st November at 7pm call the museum for tickets £7 on 01727 751810 or museums@stalbans.gov.uk

gardeners gold Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? The deluge that falls at this time of year is often enough to make even the most level headed, tree-loving gardener eye up a chainsaw. So what can you do? Turn them in to gardeners’ gold: leafmould. If you want an environmentally friendly and very effective soil conditioner or mulching material, leafmould is the answer. If you have the space, make yourself a leafmould cage. Simply drive four treated softwood stakes into the ground, each marking out a corner of the ‘cage’. The stakes need to be about 1.5m (5ft) long so they can be driven in to a depth of 1-2ft, leaving 3-4ft above ground. Attach some galvanized chicken wire to them to create the sides of the cage and cram it full of leaves. If they aren’t moist, add a watering can of water, pouring some in after each six inches of leaves. You can speed up the process by using a leafmould activator (available from garden centres). Most deciduous leaves rot down well, especially oak and beech trees. Leaves from fruit trees, garden shrubs and climbers work well too. Try to avoid including too many twigs or evergreen leaves as these take much longer to rot, as do tough, leathery leaves such as those from sycamore, horse chestnut and plane. Most of us collect leaves using a springtined rake and although slower, it helps you avoid some materials more easily. A leaf sucker or a leaf blower is quicker but will often mean you end up with more twigs and stones. If your leaves are a wide-ranging assortment, then then just mow the lawn with the leaves on it. The collection bag on the mower will be full of a brilliant mix of chopped leaves and even the slower-to-rotdown types will rot speedily as they have been chopped up finely. Mixed with the lush, high-nitrogen grass clippings, the whole process is sped up. If space, time or money are short then you can make leafmould in a bin bag. Choose a good quality one and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top and weigh it down with a brick. You should have a useable product in 12-18 months, but the longer you leave it the better. Leafmould will help to improve the moistureretaining capacity of a light, sandy soil and increase the aeration and drainage of a heavy clay soil. It also makes wonderful mulch that can be used on flower beds and borders, the vegetable plot, around trees and shrubs and on your fruit as well. It’s not often you get something for nothing, is it? So why not take advantage of all those leaves while you can.

for the love of Eleanor

Eleanor of Castile is best remembered for the series of 12 crosses erected in her memory by her grieving husband, Edward I. These mark the places that her funeral cortege stopped each night on the journey from Lincoln to Westminster Abbey. When Eleanor died at Harby, Nottinghamshire on 28th November 1290, her body was taken to Lincoln and on the 5th December the funeral cortege set out for London. The most direct route would have been Ermine Street, the Roman road. But after leaving Stamford the cortege travelled cross country to Watling Street, which it followed as far as St Albans where on the night of 13th December the coffin rested overnight in the Abbey in front of the high altar, where “it was honoured with sacred offices of the utmost devotion”. But why the circuitous route to London? One possibility is flooding making Ermine Street impassable. Or, Edward planned this route to take in places associated with Eleanor. Whatever the reason from St Albans the cortege made its way to Waltham Abbey and then south through the City of London to Westminster. Less well known is that Eleanor also had three

38

tombs. One was in Lincoln Cathedral, where her viscera which had been removed as part of the embalming process were buried. Eleanor herself was interred in a tomb in Westminster Abbey. A few days later a second funeral took place at Blackfriars Priory where at Eleanor’s request her heart was buried. Of the original tombs only the one at Westminster survives. The tomb in Lincoln was destroyed in the 17th century, and a modern replacement stands there today. While the one at Blackfriars was lost at the dissolution of the Priory. All three tombs together with the crosses were intended to remind people of Eleanor and encourage them to pray for her soul. Sadly of the 12 crosses only 3 survive, including one at Geddington, Northamptonshire (pictured), the one now at Charing Cross Station is a Victorian replacement. The St Albans cross stood in the Market Place and was built in 1294 at a cost of £100. Sadly it was demolished in 1701 and the stones disappeared. But a plaque on the Clock Tower records the passing of Eleanor and her cross through St Albans. Elizabeth Eastwood City & District of St Albans Tour Guide

2,000 years of history

Did you know that the Great Wall of China is still considered the largest man-made structure on earth? So, can you really see it from space? Unlikely, as even the first Chinese astronaut could not confirm it. Yet, steeped in 2,000 years of history and a UNESCO heritage site, the Great Wall fires up the imagination with images of invading hordes and brave soldiers fighting for emperor and country. It all started with disjointed earth defences built by warlords. When the first emperor unified China around 200 BC, all he had to do to protect his borders was connect the existing sections. Extended over time, eroded, destroyed and strengthened, much of what we see today dates back to the Ming dynasty who came to power in the 14th century, conscripting a huge labour force to build and rebuild with stone and brick. Their successors, the Manchus, did not need to breach the wall. By 1644, the peasants were starving and the gates opened by rebels. The wall includes natural defences such as deep gorges and cliffs alongside man-made fortifications, over 800 of them, though not all visible or accessible, in the Beijing province alone. Most visitors head for the Badaling section but north east of the capital, Mutianyu is quieter and just as spectacular, at the end of a scenic 70km drive through lush countryside sprinkled with farmhouses, meadows and orchards. Wild flowers line the road, all purple and gold, and weeping willows dip their roots in natural springs. When the

40

mountains begin to rise, higher and closer, excitement grows with every bend of the road. In the grand scheme of things, Mutianyu is merely a dot but beautifully restored; snaking up and down on a vertiginous ridge, it takes your breath away. Here the wall is rather special, reaching nearly eight metres in places, up to five metres across the top, with unusual perpendicular extensions, 22 towers, spaced every 100 metres or so, a triple-towered gate and crenulations on the inner and outer parapets so arrows could be shot in both directions. Arrow’s nock, bull’s horn ring, eagle flying belly up, the names of defences send shivers down your spine. Only the brave attempt the long climb to access the wall - most visitors take the cable car and save their energy for the top. A wise move, for up there it’s a rollercoaster of a trek, all steep steps and slippery slopes. Yet gazing up to the pass and the highest tower, etched into a pure blue sky, you feel on top of the world. The sun beats down, the shade is scarce but the views are fabulous; rugged mountains bristling like a dragon’s back, shadows creeping across the slopes, precipitous cliffs and spring blossom on the trees. Now and then, a gust of wind sweeps over the ancient stones and you can almost hear the clicking of armour and voices from a distant past. Far below, the tourist stalls beckon with cool drinks, pottery and Great Wall souvenirs, but on the ridge, there are no distractions, just an unforgettable panorama and 2,000 years of Chinese history.
