Stress…how can it affect our weight? We live in a society where most of us experience stress at some point in our lives. This may be caused by a number of factors such as: pressure at work, financial worries, moving house, divorce and bereavement. There are in fact, many areas of life that can cause us to feel stressed therefore it’s impossible to avoid them all. Admittedly, some people are better at dealing with stress than others, however, understanding how it can affect our bodies can help us tackle it in a positive way. In our brain we have a small almond shaped part called the Amygdala, its function is to sense danger. This was very useful thousands of years ago when we encountered the need to run for our lives to escape sabre toothed tigers, but this kind of danger is no longer a routine threat in our society! Consequently, the job of the Amygdala is to keep us safe. Unfortunately it can also respond to negative emotions such as guilt, anger or fear, causing what is known as the ‘physiological stress response’. Experiencing this response to stress has a negative effect on our digestion, because in times of danger, our bodies class digestion as low priority. The result is a poor metabolism, preventing the absorption of nutrients. This causes the body to be starved of vital nutrition because we are unable to digest our food properly. As a result our bodies continue to tell us they are hungry due to the lack of nutrition and we continue to feed them!

Autumn Planning and Planting The main growing season is over for this year making it a perfect time to do some planning and planting. Why not make sure that for years to come you have rich autumnal shades of orange, red, yellow and gold to brighten things up. There are numerous trees, shrubs and climbers with brilliant autumn colour and now is the perfect time for planting, as the soil should be relatively warm and moist. Check the growing requirements of any trees and shrubs you choose as soil and site conditions can hugely influence autumn colour. For instance, the sweet gum or Liquidambar is unlikely to produce the striking colour for which it is renowned if planted in a relatively shallow soil over chalk. Try to choose a sheltered site for plants grown for autumn colour, avoiding areas where strong winds will knock the leaves from the shrub or tree just when the plant has come into its best. Your choice of plants will be largely determined by the condition and size of your garden, so a trip to your local garden centre is worthwhile. The Japanese crimson glory vine (Vitis coignetiae) is a fabulous ornamental plant which can grow to 90 feet, so can be used to train over trees or large buildings. Its toothed leaves turn a range of purple, crimson and reddish-orange colours in autumn or for bright yellow autumn foliage try the witch hazels (Hamamelis and Fothergilla) which prefer an acid soil. Maples, particularly Japanese maples, bring vibrant colours into your garden and being relatively small or slow growing are suitable for most plots. There are lots of different types of Acer palmatum which bring lovely colour, including Acer palmatum ‘Lutesens’, which turns a rich yellowish gold. Whatever you choose it’s important to make sure the plants’ root balls are thoroughly watered and teased out, before being placed in a well prepared planting hole. Plant at the correct depth, so the shrub or tree is buried to the same depth as it was in the compost. Always keep the soil moist around the roots to help them establish so you can enjoy them for years to come. Happy Gardening by Pippa Greenwood

Open Your Garden for Charity Rennie Grove Hospice are asking gardeners to join their Open Gardens scheme, which aims to raise enough money to fund a nurse for a year. Nicola MacKinnon, Community Fundraising Manager for Rennie Grove, explains: “We’re very fortunate to have around thirty beautiful gardens appearing regularly in our programme, but we’d love to expand our portfolio so that our supporters can visit new gardens as well as their old favourites. Gardens can be large or small, formal or informal.” They’re asking gardeners to open their gardens usually on a Sunday, May - September to the public for a few hours in return for a donation to Rennie Grove. “We’re suggesting 5th June to our St Albans gardeners because the Grove House gardens will be open that day and we hope people will visit all the gardens across St Albans. If you’re proud of your garden this is a great way to showcase it while making a big difference to local families affected by cancer and other life-limiting illness,” adds Nicola. “This scheme has raised over £30,000 in the past enough to fund a Hospice at Home or Day Hospice nurse for 12 months.” 01727 731028 www.renniegrove.org/opengardens

Consumer Advice NOW Jonathon Vernon-Smith, assists listeners with consumer problems on his mid-morning show, and now shares his consumer wisdom with
The Consumer Rights Act I thought it would be useful to explain the new Consumer Rights Act that came into force in October. The law has now been clarified, making life easier for consumers, and retailers, many of whom have been unclear about their obligations in the past. The most important changes are as follows: 30 days to get a refund If a product develops a fault within the first 30 days, you are now automatically entitled to a full refund. Failed Repairs Previousy retailers could demand up to three attempts to repair the same problem, now you can ask for a refund (or reduction) after 1 failed attempt to repair or request another repair or replacement at no cost to yourself. Deductions from refunds Previously a retailer could take into account the use you’d had from a product when issuing a refund. Now, for the first 6 months after purchase they can’t deduct any money, however motor vehicle retailers can take usage into account. Unfair terms in consumer contracts It’s now easier
to challenge hidden fees and charges. The key terms of a contract, including price may be assessed for fairness unless they are both prominent and transparent. As with the Sale of Goods Act, products should still be: Satisfactory quality Goods should not be faulty or damaged when you receive them, and should last for a ‘reasonable’ amount of time based on the cost. The more you spend, the more you’re entitled to. Fit for purpose They should do what they’re supposed to do. As described The goods must match any description given at the time of purchase. The law remains the same in terms of the time limits on making claims. For example, from the date of purchase to the first 6 months, the responsibility lies with the retailer to prove the problem with the product has been caused by the consumer. From 6 months after the purchase date, the responsibility falls to the consumer to prove that the product has a manufacturing fault or has not lasted for a ‘reasonable’ amount of time. Any cost incurred to prove this, can be reclaimed from the retailer. I hope the new Consumer Rights Act means that we’ll see an end to businesses treating customers badly, but as always, if you have a problem with a retailer please contact my programme for help. You can email me on jvsshow@bbc.co.uk (please include a daytime telephone number).
