Feeding Birds in Winter Winter is a difficult time for birds as they need to find food for energy and build fat stores to keep warm through long, cold nights. Smaller birds need to eat up to a third of their bodyweight every day. You can help them by growing plants to provide berries and seeds, and others which provide a habitat for insects they can eat. Berries are an excellent source of antioxidants and are an important part of a bird’s diet, as they help them endure long periods of physical activity. You can also provide birds with sunflower hearts and seeds, nyjer seeds, seed mixes, peanuts or suet which are useful when natural foods are in short supply, and snow and ice can make accessing them harder. Don’t forget to provide fresh water for them to drink and bathe. Bathing helps them keep their feathers pristine and insulated, just make sure it doesn’t freeze over!

A-Z Of St Albans Places-People-History by Wendy Turner St Albans has a rich seam of history from Julius Caesar, to the 12th century Sopwell Nunnery with its abbess (head of an abbey of nuns), author of a book on fishing, thought to be the first book written in the English language by a woman. St Albans has many faces; it’s a vibrant, modern Hertfordshire city, a buzzing market town, and a cathedral city with the Abbey at its heart. Yet there’s a darker side with manslaughter, murder and mayhem at its core. Wendy Turner takes us through its history from A-Z in this recently published book. The book can be purchased from all good local bookshops and online retailers, as well as www.amberley-books.com Cost £14.99

This year’s theme, ‘Leaving no one behind’ is about inspiring action to tackle the global sanitation crisis. Sustainable Development Goal 6 has a target to eliminate open defecation and ensure everyone has access to sustainable sanitation services by 2030, “paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations”. This year World Toilet Day is drawing attention to those being left behind without sanitation. We must expand access to toilets, because whoever you are, wherever you are, sanitation is your human right. A toilet is not just a toilet. It’s a life-saver, dignityprotector and opportunity-maker. We must build toilets for all by 2030. Here are some Key facts: ● 4.2 billion people live without safely managed sanitation, more than half the global population. ● 673 million people still practise open defecation.

● At least 2 billion people use a drinking water source contaminated with faeces.

● Inadequate sanitation is estimated to cause 432,000 diarrhoeal deaths every year and is a major factor in diseases such as intestinal worms and trachoma. ● Children under the age of five living in countries affected by protracted conflict are, on average, nearly 20 times more likely to die from diarrhoeal diseases caused by a lack of safe water, sanitation and hygiene than by direct violence.
