NOW in the Garden Autumn is now upon us, accompanied by seasonal chill and longer nights. The shorter days might leave less time for gardening but October is the ideal month to start preparing your garden for next Spring. General Spend some time tidying your borders and cutting back tired herbaceous perennials. To insulate plant roots and minimise weeds, mulch borders with bark chips or well rotted manure. Avoid feeding plants now as the growth it engenders is likely to be soft and more vulnerable to damage by damp and frost. Planting Spring bedding plants such as Bellis, Primula, Viola and Forget Me Not can be planted either in the ground or in pots, as can hardy annuals as long as the weather stays mild. October is also a good time to plant new herbaceous perennials, as the soil remains warm, but now holds more moisture than during the hot summer months.

18

If you still have spring bulbs to plant, plant them as early as possible this month, while the soil is still warm. This allows the roots time to establish before winter, making them less susceptible to wet and rot. Now is also the ideal time for moving and planting trees, hedges, shrubs and climbers. Pruning Take time this month to trim any deciduous hedges to keep them looking tidy over the winter. Any shrubs that are normally pruned hard in the spring, such as Lavatera, Buddleja davidii and Cornus alba, can be cut back to half their size to prevent wind damage and keep them looking tidy. Lawn care During autumn take care to regularly rake fallen leaves off your lawn to ensure it gets enough light and air. To prepare your lawn for next year, take time this month to scarify, aerate and top dress your lawn. Finally apply a low nitrogen autumn lawn feed; low nitrogen is essential as we don’t want to encourage growth that is likely to be damaged during the winter. Happy Gardening! Innovative Goalkeeper Coaching

GK Icon is an innovative goalkeeper coaching experience, aimed to provide enjoyable sessions for goalkeepers of all abilities and age. We strive to provide a service that will improve and test every goalkeeper who attends our sessions. We use new training methods, ideas and equipment, such as the 'visual enhancement training system' and the 'crazy catch' as well as speed ladders and bungee chords amongst other apparatus to make the sessions unique and different from anything you will have ever experienced before. What we can guarantee is that you'll have fun, make new friends and take your game to another level.

I have been going to Gk Icon at Oaklands College since January and the sessions have definitely helped me improve as a player by teaching me key skills and improving my confidence. The coaches have been supportive and encouraging trying out new techniques every week on handling, diving, distribution and kicking. I have met other goalkeeper’s both girls and boys of a similar age, it’s been great sharing experiences and having fun while doing something we love. I would definitely recommend it to current goalkeepers and those looking to try out the position in the future. The sessions are so helpful they make me want to come back again and again!

Gloria 4th October

The Quorum Singers of St Albans are holding a celebratory concert at Dagnall Street Baptist Church, Cross Street Centre, St Albans on 4th October at 7pm. The choir is celebrating 25 years of music-making at the very church from which it was founded, and is delighted to be performing there once again. The concert of Sacred and Secular songs, will include music arranged by former conductor Ewart Hopkins and local composer Alexander L’Estrange. Quorum will be joined by St Michael’s Church Junior Choir and the Hersom Recorder Consort, for what will be a feast of beautiful music. The concert is free, with a retiring collection for Christian Aid. Our History: Quorum was founded in September 1989 as a group of ten singers to sing at the celebrations for the opening of Dagnall Street Baptist Church. Since then it has raised many thousands of pounds for both local and national charities. Our Future The choir members are a friendly group singing mainly in four SATB parts, both unaccompanied and with organ or keyboard accompaniment. Quorum is keen to hear from singers who may be interested in joining or any organisations who may be interested in having the choir perform email: choir@quorumsingers.org.uk or call Michael on 01582 832567. www.quorumsingers.org.uk

Explore and enjoy art with UH Galleries

The University of Hertfordshire welcomes you to its two art exhibition spaces in Hatfield and St Albans. Presenting an exciting and innovative rolling programme of exhibitions, we host artists living in our city and those working in Europe, and beyond. You don’t need to travel to London to see the best contemporary art being produced today. On your doorstep we offer ambitious drawings, paintings, sculptures, photography, film and installations to explore. This season we are delighted to present two sculpture exhibitions. Walk among new artworks created by Irish artist Emma Donaldson ‘Making Trouble’, now until 16th November at the Museum of St Albans. These unusual sculptures are sensitively made using cheap everyday materials, yet highly charged with emotion. Enter the Art and Design Gallery in Hatfield to encounter Valerie Inns’ ambitious sculptural forms that dramatically respond to the building’s architecture with surprising materials including animal hair, plant seeds and cardboard! ‘Substratum’ now until 18th October. Later in the season, enjoy over 50 artworks made by artists living in the East region in our rich and varied annual open exhibition ‘Eastern Approaches’ 6th December 11th January at the Museum of St Albans. NOW for a Good Read No-one knows what the future holds, but here are a few interesting books to get you thinking about what might lie ahead. Divergent Veronica Roth Life is generally considered to be confusing enough for teenagers, but in Veronica Roth’s vision of the future, society has become fragmented into five factions of virtue, and all sixteen year olds must choose that which they want to devote their lives to

preserving. Tris needs to make a decision about who to trust and whether or not to leave her family and follow her own path. Then there’s a new love interest, but she’s not sure whether he will protect her or ultimately destroy her. Once the brutality of the initiation is over, is it all worth it and is Tris following the right path? Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Philip K Dick Basis for Ridley Scott’s film Blade Runner. Bounty hunter Rick Deckard is preying on, and ‘retiring’ androids that have short but murderous lifespans, in order to pay his own bills and keep his depressed wife buoyant. In a parallel life, John Isidore is trying to conserve and protect the androids. In this postapocalyptic world, most animals have been destroyed by the effects of radiation and the scarcity and cost of owning one is where the title comes from. The novel asks all kinds of questions about human emotions and, most importantly empathy. It’s an amazing and intriguing thriller. Brave New World Aldous Huxley In Huxley’s vision of the future, everyone’s free to take recreational drugs and be as promiscuous as they

like. Who wouldn’t want to exist in such a utopia? The World Controllers have created the ideal living situation but, true to form, there’s always one who isn’t happy. It’s just all a bit too good. Bernard Marx is searching for imperfections, unconvinced that this contrived society is really making people as happy as they appear. He visits one of the so-called Savage Reservations to try and cure his restlessness. A future story that makes us question the present is always a goodie and shows us why this novel has stood the test of time. 2001: A Space Odyssey Arthur C Clarke Next time your computer won’t do what you want it to, spare a thought for the crew of the Discovery, who’ve been tasked with finding out why a mysterious monolith found on the Moon, is sending a signal out to Saturn. Their electronic friend is HAL 9000, who seems to have developed feelings and self-awareness, but also slightly murderous tendencies. If you thought space was scary enough, imagine being under the control of a digital psychopath. It’s science fiction at its most intense.
