The Pilgrims Rest Do you remember a popular restaurant called The Pilgrims Rest at 1 Holywell Hill, St Albans, if so, you might like to read ‘The Pilgrims Rest’ a novel by Chrissy Smith based on fact intermingled with religious and historical truths and legends about the family and staff who lived and worked there. It tells of ghostly sightings, and of an ancient tunnel found in the far corner of the cellar which runs underneath Holywell Hill to the centre of the Abbey. One reader commented “If you have any knowledge of the legendary family run restaurant, The Pilgrims Rest, from back in the day then this book is a must. If you lived and grew up in the city of St Albans between the '60's - 80's you will find plenty of interest within its pages. Being lucky enough to have known many of the characters in the book, who are described here with great warmth, it provides a fascinating insight into this catering institution and those who ran it. The story of the enigmatic Alf is woven among the tales of daily life of the family, the restaurant and its staff” In this work of fiction the characters, places and events are either the product of the author’s imagination or they are used entirely fictitiously. Available at Books on the Hill which, in a strange quirk of fate, took over the premises at 1 Holywell Hill, and also on Kindle download from Amazon.

Happy Composting! Homemade compost is a great soil conditioner to use as surface mulch around plants or for digging into your soil before planting. All soils benefit from the addition of bulky organic matter, which acts as a sponge to hold moisture in light sandy soils and helps break down heavy clay soils making them easier to work. Compost also contains plant nutrients that are released as bacteria which breaks it down during the rotting process, and it’s a great way to recycle. Make sure that the base is level, paving stones make a great foundation. A sheltered site is best so that the heaps do not get too wet in winter. There are many compost bins available from garden centres, it’s helpful to have two bins if you can, so the compost can be moved from one to the other. One made from wooden slats that are removable at the front is ideal. Cover the top with wood, old carpet or a sheet of plastic to stop it becoming too wet. After six months the contents can be turned. The lower layers may have rotted enough to use or you can turn the heap into another bin so that the newest material is on the bottom and the oldest on the top. This will speed up the composting process. Leave for another six months and the compost will be ready for use. What can you add - Grass clippings, not treated with weed killer or lawn ‘weed and feed’ treatment - Soft weeds that have not set seed - Fruit and vegetable peelings and egg shells - Chopped prunings from the garden - Shred or finely chop large woody pieces - Cardboard and newspaper What should you avoid - Cat and dog faeces and cat litter - Weeds and annual plants that have set seed - Diseased leaves or plants - Cooked food scraps - Man-made materials such as nylon and plastic Happy Composting!

Face Masks The New Plastic Pollution Discarded face masks are now a common sight. Apart from the potential risk of spreading disease, they also pose a choking hazard to wildlife. The huge increase in the use of single-use plastic gloves and masks will negatively impact the environment. The masks have a polypropylene filter and don’t break down easily, so will end up in landfill and our oceans. Plastic waste dropped on the street gets washed into drains and can enter local rivers, contaminating water with the pathogen. Material reusable masks are a better eco-friendly alternative as long as they are washed after each use. It’s important that we ‘Stay Safe’ but it’s also important that we look after our wildlife and don’t allow our rivers to become contaminated. Please make sure you dispose of masks and gloves in bins or take them home.

St Albans Picture House - The Films of Arthur Melbourne Cooper until 11th Oct In July 1908, Arthur Melbourne Cooper opened the Alpha Picture House in St Albans, the first permanent cinema in Hertfordshire. Designed by local architect Percival Blow and seating 800, it had a raked floor, a separate fire-proof projection booth, uniformed ushers and free tea in the intervals. Melbourne Cooper showed his own films, often filmed in and around St Albans. He had trained as an assistant and cameraman to Birt Acres who, in 1895, had developed the first British 35mm moving picture camera. One of his most famous films is Dream of Toyland, an early example of stop motion animation featuring toy figures and animals. Another of his works, Rescue in Mid-Air, used trick photography to give the illusion of a woman using an umbrella to fly through the air, long before Mary Poppins. He was a pioneer of early British film but is sadly not well-known today. You are invited to take a seat in the recreated Picture House and enjoy these amazing silent films.
