Historical Reads Life on the Home Front A new book, St Albans: Life on the Home Front, 1914-1918 throws light on what life was like in St Albans during the First World War. It’s believed to be the first to cover in depth the First World War period in the city from the point of view of those who fought the war on the home front. It reveals how St Albans became a garrison town for the first time in centuries in August 1914, forcing local people to quickly adjust to troops being billeted in their homes, schools and church halls as some 7,000 troops flooded into the city as part of military plans to protect the country from invasion and an attack on London. Providing insights into the dayto-day struggles caused by wartime legislation, rationing, air raids and the need to support the fighting men and the wounded. It also provides a study of the tribunal system, established in 1916 following the introduction of conscription. The researchers pieced together the stories of hundreds of local men whose applications were heard by the St Albans Military Service Tribunal. The book also examines the issue of commemoration, which began with street shrines in 1916 and led to over 40 First World War memorials being placed in and around the city. The book has been researched and written by 21 local people, including three professional historians, who are all members of the St Albans & Hertfordshire Architectural & Archaeological Society (SAHAAS). Local Events 19th October: Pop up stall at St Albans Central Library manned by members of the SAHAAS research team. 7th - 16th November: Exhibition in the North Transept at St Albans Cathedral, including photographs, maps and research information featured in St Albans: Life on the Home Front, 1914-1918. The book costs £18.99 and is available from Waterstones and St Albans Cathedral Bookshop. For further information about the book contact Sue Mann, 01727 869977 or sue.mann@zen.co.uk

Waterloo General by St Albans author John Morewood 3pm, 18th June 1815, the Battle of Waterloo. A British officer in a major general’s uniform is riding hard, pursued by French lancers. Sir William Ponsomby, commander of the Union Brigade, is fleeing for his life. For a while he and the trooper with him keep their distance - there is a fleeting hop they may get away. But they hit a waterlogged field and Sir William, realising that as his horse slows that there is no hope of escape, hands a locket to the trooper, asking him to give it to his son and orders him to ride away to safety. Then he draws his sabre to defend himself against the enemy horsemen as they cluster around him. This is how the 1970 film Waterloo shows the death of Sir William, a man who the Duke of Wellington stated had ‘rendered very brilliant and important services and was an ornament to his profession’. He was a career soldier who had led his regiment in the decisive charge of his Union Brigade of the Royals, Iniskillings and Scots Greys at Waterloo - which wrecked a French advance that threatened Wellington with defeat - got out of hand. In this book John Morewood uses family sources, including Sir William’s letters, as well as French and German accounts, to restore his reputation and, by shedding new light on the battle, establishes what really happened to him on that fatal afternoon. It is also a biography of a man whose bravery and professionalism distinguished him as one of the outstanding cavalry commanders of the age. John Morewood read history at Oxford University and was editor of the Nelson Society from 1997 - 1999 and the Waterloo Association from 2001 - 2011. www.pen-and-sword.co.uk 01226 734222

Rake Without The Ache Raking up the leaves can take a toll on your body, these tips will help you stay healthy and prevent injury. Be patient: Wait to tackle your garden once all the leaves have fallen as it will save you hours of work. Pick the right tools for the job There are many lightweight, ergonomic rakes that can save time and prevent injury. Warm-up: Before starting, warm-up for 5-10 minutes to get the joints moving and increase blood circulation. Try marching on the spot, climbing stairs or a quick walk. Follow this with gentle stretches for your back, arms, shoulders and legs. Never bounce jerk or strain when stretching. A warm-up ensures you body is ready for action! Rake right: While raking ease the strain on your back by putting one leg in front of the other and switch legs and hands from time to time. Check your position: Change it often, kneel then stand, take regular breaks and relax for a while. Bend your knees to lift with ease: Get close to the bag of leaves you want to lift and stand with your feet shoulder width apart, head up. Keep your feet and body pointing in the same direction and your back straight. Stop raking immediately if you feel back pain: If you have severe back pain or it persists for more than a day after gardening seek medical advice. Raking has dual benefits. It’s good for the grass and good physical exercise for us.

Ein Deutsches Requiem Thoroughly Modern Millie 4th - 8th October Harpenden Public Halls Based on the 1967 Academy Award-winning film, this show takes you back to the height of the Jazz Age in New York City, when "moderns" were bobbing their hair, raising their hemlines, entering the workforce, and rewriting the rules of love. Set in 1922, it tells the story of young Millie Dillmount from Kansas who comes to New York in search of a new life. Her plan is to find a job as a secretary for a wealthy man and marry him. However, her plan goes awry. The owner of her dingy hotel kidnaps young girls to sell to the Far East; her wealthy boss is slow in proposing marriage; and the man she actually falls in love with doesn't have a dime - or so he tells her. Filled with frisky flappers, dashing men and a dragon of a villainess audiences will love to hate, the show also includes explosive tap numbers and a Fred and Ginger routine on a window ledge. £9 - £15 www.hlos.ticketsource.co.uk
