For the first time in 12 years, St Albans Cathedral will be hosting a spectacular Flower Festival from 25th - 28th September, which will transform every inch of the building into a stunning oasis of colour and music. Hundreds of beautiful and imaginative flower displays will clothe the ancient stones, from delicate posies to majestic designs that scale the heights of the Cathedral nave. The arrangements will be themed on musical titles of every genre; classical pieces from Vivaldi, Handel and Holst to modern classics from Adele, Abba, and Elton John. You will see hymns, nursery rhymes, songs from the musicals and famous film theme tunes come to life in what promises to be a feast for all the senses. A programme of live music throughout the Festival will add to the unique atmosphere. The Dean of St Albans Cathedral, the Very Reverend Jeffrey John, said, "Cathedral worship is about trying to offer God the best of everything. Flowers are a big part of the symphony of the senses; music, art, architecture, liturgical movement and colour, the spoken word, and even the scent of flowers and incense – which all combine to make the beauty of the Cathedral and its services. Expect to be dazzled and inspired by a spectacular display." A Bouquet of Festival Facts ► Approximately 20,000 blooms will be used ► The largest arrangement will be 18ft tall ► The smallest is the size of a teacup ► Over 130 pieces of music and songs will feature in the displays. ► Around 400 arrangers are involved

WW1 100 Years Remembered An Inspection by Lord Kitchener

Field Marshall Kitchener came to St Albans on 29th September 1914 to review the assembled troops in Gorhambury Park. One soldier recalled that they were only informed of the inspection the day before and were kept busy until late preparing. The following morning the troops were lined up ready for inspection. Hundreds of people came to watch the spectacle. From their vantage point close to Gorhambury House they could see in the distance blocks of men – battalions in solid squares on the hill opposite against a backdrop of trees showing their autumn colours. It was a hot sunny day, bayonets and rifle barrels shone in the sunshine. While the men’s khaki uniform set against the brown turf made it difficult to discern that the brown “squares” were actually comprised of soldiers. Kitchener, mounted on horseback inspected the column of infantry which was reported to be over a mile long. Then the artillery marched past and all the time the infantry men were standing to attention. After the march past Kitchener dismounted and departed by car through the cheering crowds. The soldiers then marched out as the bands played “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” and “A Life on the Ocean Wave” One newspaper said it was a “stirring scene”, while another said “it would linger long in the memory of those who were there.”

Help Fight Global Poverty TRAID loves the clothes you don't, and to prove it the environmental and global development charity is expanding its hugely popular free home collections service to include all of St Albans and Harpenden. Simply book a collection online, by phone or email, and TRAID will come and collect. It's an easy way for communities to donate unwanted clothes direct from their door, directly to charity. Collections take place at convenient times when you are at home so donations are not left outside where they are vulnerable to theft and bad weather. Nearly one million tonnes of textiles are sent to UK landfill and incineration every year, with 350,000 tonnes of these textiles estimated to be good enough to be worn again. With UK landfill at bursting point and textiles contributing disproportionately to greenhouse emissions, TRAID’s innovative work to reclaim and reuse unwanted clothes is more relevant than ever. With a little help from computer wizardry and a generous helping of mischievous pixies and magical faery folk, Ashridge has been transformed into a bewitching landscape. NOW in the Garden This summer take the time to sit back and enjoy all you have achieved in your garden. However, there is still much to be done to keep it in top form. Watering In hot weather it is imperative plants are watered well as many will fail to recover from a drought. Regularly water plants in hanging baskets, pots, newly established plants, early flowering shrubs such as Camellia and Rhodendron, and any climbers growing on a sunny wall. To prevent the sun evaporating the water before it reaches the plant roots it is best to water in the early morning or even better, late evening. Deadheading and Pruning Continue deadheading all dying flowers on annuals, roses and shrubs to encourage the plants to re-flower and keep your garden looking tidy. To prevent the possibility of infection in roses, cut the stem with secateurs rather than just breaking off the dead flower.

36

Pruning Lightly prune Lavender after flowering to prevent it from becoming leggy, take care not to cut too far into old wood. Prune Wisteria, Rambling Roses and shrubs such as Pyracantha once they have flowered. Now is the time to trim your hedges as they are unlikely to grow much more before the cold weather. Preparation Now is the perfect time to plan your borders for next year. Make a note of any gaps or overcrowding so that you can rectify these issues later in the season. August is also a good time to start thinking about purchasing spring flowering bulbs as they will need to be planted by the end of September. Lawns Lawns should be mowed lightly and often, leave grass clippings on the lawn as a mulch to retain moisture. Browning is very common in during hot summer weather but the grass will green again when the autumn rains arrives. Happy Gardening! James Lanwarne, Lanwarne Landscapes

The Day I Met Rebecca We were recently given the opportunity to interview Rebecca Adlington OBE, at Westminster Lodge, managed by Everyone Active in partnership with St Albans District Council, as part of the St Albans Legacy Games Day. As Jane’s daughter, Mollie is very sporty, and had a Work Shadowing Day planned as part of her Year 7 curriculum, she jumped at the opportunity to meet a sporting hero, and do the interview on behalf of ‘the NOW magazines’. Mollie planned the questions herself, and so it’s lovely to hear the interview from her perspective.

The aim of the Legacy Games is to bring communities together and bridge the gap between facilities, schools and experts. “Getting kids active is vitally important and the Legacy Games Day engages them in a fun way” said Rebecca. “I wanted to encourage the children to try something new and try their best. Without encouragement none of us get too far so I wanted to spur them on to do their best”. Rebecca's goal is for every child in the UK to swim 25m before leaving junior school. The Legacy Games is a joint initiative between Everyone Active and Fit For Sport who have committed to engaging young people in physical activity, knowing those physically active when young, are 75% more likely to be active into adulthood. Westminster Lodge is trying to make a difference by engaging children of all sporting abilities, to find activities they enjoy and hopefully a long term sporting interest comes from www.everyoneactive.com 38 that.

What made you want to become a swimmer: I have two older sisters and my parents wanted us to all to learn to swim and never be scared of water, so I got into it through the family. With the 2012 Olympics being the host nations team, did it put any additional pressure on you: Yes definitely there was more pressure before the Olympics as everyone was coming up to you and wishing you good luck and during the Olympics everyone cheering and supporting you, even if you didn't get through to the final. Who's your biggest sporting hero: Chris Hoy because he’s such a professional and has a great attitude and I have great respect for him. What motivates you: I am the type of person that gives 100% to everything I do. My motivation is to do my very best and to leave no stone unturned. In a dream team of your choice who would you do a relay with: Michael Phelps, Ian Thorpe and Kate Ledecky How many swimming medals do you have: 4 Olympic, 4 World, 4 Commonwealth and 3 European medals. If you weren't a swimmer what would you do as a job: Sports Coach or Manager. What has been your greatest achievement: Winning the two gold medals in Beijing and the 800m was special because I set the world record with my parents watching. What made you want to be part of the Legacy Games: The motto for London 2012 Olympics was ‘Inspire a Generation’ and as it was all about inspiring people to start playing sport, as soon I was asked I said yes. What advice can you give to young children wanting to be like you: Just enjoy what you're doing and don't think of it as a job, think of it as a hobby. What did you have to do to become a Olympic athlete: A lot of hard work, training for long sessions starting at 5 in the morning. As a fan of ‘I’m a Celebrity’, what was it like to be in the jungle: It was amazing, a unique, once in a lifetime opportunity. Bush Tucker Trials are real and they breed all the animals themselves so they are really safe to eat, the fires are real, you sleep outside, you boil your own water and all the bugs and snakes really do come into the camp! I really enjoyed talking with Rebecca, she was very inspiring and seemed happy to just chat. Probably the thing that I found most inspirational was that she trained 6 days a week from 5am! I love sport and play loads of football and have just been signed for QPR under 14’s and so now realise this is the sort of dedication it takes to become the best! Mollie Herrington, Year 7 Sandringham School

Come and do ‘The Tour’

48

Why not extend the summer holiday mood with a self-guided tour of some of Hertfordshire’s finest artists, craftmakers and artisans? Artists are opening their doors for the biggest county-wide art event in Hertfordshire - Herts Open Studios 2014. This annual autumn show, organised by Herts Visual Arts, runs for three weeks from the 6th - 28th September and entry to participating exhibitions is free. What gets you going? In the 17th and 18th centuries young ladies and gentlemen set off on a once-in-a-lifetime ‘Grand Tour’ through Europe to expand their cultural experience, following a traditional route. These days we’re aware of our carbon footprint so supporting a local event is a better idea. For many art lovers Open Studios is an educational or cultural experience with the opportunity to meet artists, and at some venues, see the way they work. For others it can be anything from a great trip out to retail therapy. Linda Warminger, Open Studios project manager, says “Herts Open Studios 2014 has 154 artists exhibiting in 94 unique exhibitions across

Hertfordshire. There’s a mix of regular exhibitors and new artists and craftmakers, all showing their latest pieces, and keen for you to see what they’re doing.” Here is a taster of what you can find in the St Albans area. Gerry Wilmer creates wonderful celebrations of trees, sea and landscapes in the form of colourful paintings, limited edition giclee prints and cards. Jonathan Higgins sculpts beautifully proportioned figures inspired by everyday situations, fashion and photography. His materials are marble resin and acrylic, used to create wonderful contemporary pieces. Rachel Jeffrey is a jewellery designer-maker who creates tempting pieces in silver, gold, platinum and precious stones. Marshall Colman , one of the few British potters working in tin glazed earthenware, creates unique painted ceramic bowls and dishes in a range of abstract designs and colourways. Flea Cooke creates striking stitched textile collages with an inviting textural quality, involving piecing and layering, folding and stiffening cloth. Also on show are limited edition accessories. Create your own route This is just a glimpse of what’s available; there are many more talented artists on show in the area. All you need to create your own self-guided tour, or series of trips with friends or family is the Herts Open Studios brochure containing venues and opening times. Find this at main libraries, tourist information centres and local galleries or online. Entry to participating exhibitions is free. If you like something you see spoil yourself or a friend and make a purchase - or commission a special piece direct from the maker. Enjoy ‘The Tour’! For more details or to obtain a brochure visit www.hvaf.org.uk email openstudios@hvaf.org.uk or call 07813 100651
