Embrace Your Identity Opportunity

From the outside looking in, few people have as glamorous a life as Maria Shriver. Growing up, the pressure to achieveβ€”some of it self-imposedβ€”was immense. Shriver was surrounded by great minds, high-achievers and people who were changing the world. And she followed suit. She worked hard and became a celebrated journalist and best-selling author. She married Arnold Schwarzenegger and had four children. Throughout her life she’s gracefully taken on the role of keeper of the Shriver/ Kennedy family legacy. But in 2003 her life took an unexpected turn when Schwarzenegger was elected governor of California. Almost overnight Shriver went from knowing exactly who she was and what

Maria Shriver shares the value of knowing yourself.

Children are asked quite often, what do you want to be when you grow up? As teenagers, they’re sent off to college to prepare for their chosen profession. And, after spending between $25,000 and $50,000 (or more) on a bachelor’s degree, many of these young men and women go into a career that has nothing to do with their education. Maybe that disconnect has something to do with the fact that we’re asking the wrong question. Perhaps instead of asking what you want to be, we should be asking who you want to be.

Practicing Social Skills

The Value of Life The dignity of every person is rooted in the reality that each person has been created in the image and likeness of God. The great diversity among individuals and peoples manifests the beauty, wonder and goodness of God. Our uniqueness is not primarily in our DNA. It is rooted in our uniqueness as individual persons created and gifted by God.

Using science without a solid valuing of human life violates the dignity of the human person and is contrary to the divine plan of Creation. We are called to respect every human life at all stages of development. Every person, regardless of their physical abilities or disabilities, possesses sacred value.

Saint John Bosco worked during

Lord, we are all one in you. How wonderful you have created us, beautiful in our uniqueness and strong in our connectedness. Amen.

Contemporary science focuses our individual uniqueness in our genes, in our DNA. Increasing knowledge of the genetic structure of plants, animals and humans provides the opportunity to seek cures for disease. For example, there are over two thousand diseases or conditions linked to genes.

God said to honor your father and mother. In giving honor, you receive love. This is God’s plan for families. Parents are to love their children. Children are to love and honor their parents. Being Needed Ricky to the Rescue Ricky’s mother was lying on the sofa with a white cast on her right arm. Two green pillows propped up her arm to help reduce the swelling. The day before, she tripped on a broken porch step, fell and broke a bone in her arm. β€œI need your help,” Mom told Ricky. β€œI’ll be depending on you for a few weeks now. I’d like for you to cook dinner for us. Jack and Linda will be home in time to help with the cleaning afterwards.”

‒  explore the importance of being someone your family can depend on. ‒   discover ways to be a responsible member of your family. ‒  make choices to show your family that they can depend on you.

Ricky scratched his head. He was confused. His own mother, β€œSuper Mom,” was asking for his help! Ricky saw the look of pain on her face. She really needed him! β€œNo problem, Mom,” said Ricky. β€œCooking dinner might be fun!” β€œRight now, I have to rest. Everything you need is in the kitchen,” Mom assured Ricky. β€œCall me if you need some help.” As his mother shut her eyes, Ricky went to the kitchen. She had put out all the things with instructions on making a hamburger casserole and rolls. At 5 p.m., Ricky slid the casserole and rolls into the oven. The kitchen was a bit messy, but dinner would be a feast! Ricky felt proud. He was glad that his mother was willing to depend on him. Ricky slipped outside to play basketball for a few minutes. He sank basket after basket. Then he heard Jack and Linda come up behind him.

How can you show responsibility to your family?

β€œNice basket!” Linda said. β€œYou’re a hot shot!” Jack said. β€œYeah,” Ricky said smiling, β€œout here and in the kitchen, too!”
