THE JOURNAL

THE JOURNAL

President’s Report

CEO’s Report

Dear Members

Dear Members

It has been a great start to the year as we have officially unveiled our new multi-outlet casual dining precinct, The Plaza. Delivering four new outlets, a bigger and better interactive kids’ play area, a multi-purpose function room and an outdoor alfresco dining space complete with a bar and big screen TV, The Plaza adds an additional 732 seating capacity to the Club. Overall, The Plaza presents a relaxing and casual dining atmosphere - a home away from home - that our members and guests can enjoy. Since opening, the response has been remarkable, and I am proud of the efforts by the entire Wenty Leagues team and the work our project team for bringing The Plaza to life. A truly unique offering, this marks another significant achievement for Wenty Leagues. However, not to rest on our laurels, in the coming months we will proceed further into our Master Plan as construction now moves to Stage B. This part of the Master Plan will include works on delivering premium carparking spaces, improved pedestrian access and a new grand entrance

foyer. You can read more details about the scheduled works on the inside front cover of this journal. Shifting our focus to community initiatives, I am pleased to report that Wenty Leagues is the largest contributing Club to Learning Links in Australia. Over the last two years Wenty Leagues has provided funds to support programs such as Reading for Life ($7,895) and the Disadvantaged Childrens Education Fund ($12,000) which are dedicated to enhancing the reading skills, self-esteem and motivation of children affected by learning disabilities. Additionally, I’d also like to announce that applications for the 2019 ClubGRANTS scheme will open in April, and we welcome proposals for funding from all local not-for-profit community groups, charities and organisations. Funded by local clubs and administered by Cumberland Council, the ClubGRANTS scheme is designed to assist and promote the local community priorities, namely community welfare and social services, community development, health services and employment assistance activities.

Finally, I would like to remind all members that the AGM will be held in the Starlight Room from 10am on Sunday 26 May. We look forward to updating you on the current and future development plans for the Club and delivering the strong financial results in more detail. On behalf of the Board, we wish everyone an enjoyable Easter and to all the mums a very Happy Mother’s Day. I look forward to seeing you all at the Club.

The first quarter of the year is behind us and we have reached so many significant milestones. The entire club has been buzzing with excitement as our patrons got to experience our delicious new dining offerings from Chefs Grill, Pizza Mama and Crave Desserts for the first time. All part of our new multi-outlet casual dining precinct, The Plaza, the response has been amazing as each outlet has consistently produced a record number of covers each week. This is a testament to the continuous hard work and dedication shown by the Wenty Leagues team to deliver the highest quality experience to all our members and guests. There is so much more on offer at The Plaza so I invite you to visit our website www.theplaza.wentyleagues.com.au or search ‘The Plaza at Wenty Leagues’ on Facebook and Instagram for more information. Early in the year we also celebrated various events including Australia Day, Senior’s Week

and St Patrick’s Day. We welcomed a huge turnout of families with youngsters for three sold out shows of The Wiggles in March. Now, leading into the school holidays we aim to up the ante by bringing you The Katy Perry & Taylor Swift Show + Kids Disco, Minifit - a free fitness session for kids led by Rugby League great, Anthony Minichiello and special Easter promotions, raffles and festivities in April. In the lead up to Mother’s Day we’ll have special Sunday Raffles featuring prizes mums will love and on the special day we’ll have entertainment and exclusive dining options available in The Plaza. For more information see page 16 in this Journal. Our commitment to community initiatives continue as I am pleased to report that our staff have again shown a strong turnout of volunteering at Parramatta Mission serving over 200 clients at the Meals Plus Lunch in February. Then later this month, we will be in Ronald McDonald House serving families with seriously ill children a specially prepared dinner to help put a smile on their faces during this difficult time.

In closing, I would like to thank you all for your continued patronage and I look forward to greeting you all at the club. Glenn Kovacs Chief Executive Officer

As Ian has already mentioned, the Master Plan works will continue to reach new peaks through the year. While these changes may take some time to get used to, we hope our members and visitors can appreciate that careful efforts have been made to minimise disruption while we work at continuing to provide easier access to club facilities.

HELPING LOCAL YOUNG ATHLETES TO ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS - SAMANTHA BEATTY (CYCLIST) The Western Sydney Academy of Sport is an independent, not-for-profit communitybased organisation which relies on support from other organisations like Wenty Leagues to help athletes get the training and education needed to reach their potential. Recently recognised as an Academy Ambassador, Wenty Leagues sponsored local young talent, Samantha Beatty in the sport of Cycling. Samantha is an athlete from Old Toongabbie and attends Northmead CAPA High School. She is currently competing in the National Junior Track Series which takes place in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. Samantha is 14 years old and has an ambition to represent NSW and Australia in the next few years at a Junior Level and to continue to reach her goal of being an Olympian. Wenty Leagues is excited to support her on this journey as she begins to undertake programs to develop her technical, educational and personal development skills.

motivation of children affected by learning disabilities. An example of how this support has helped can be seen at Pendle Hill Public School, located just around the corner from the Club, this school had 10 children participate in the Learning Links Reading for Life program. The children, boys and girls from grades 2 through to 4, were supported by 5 staff members from Wenty Leagues and 1 provisional psychologist from Learning Links, who volunteered their time generously to provide one-to-one reading help for 45 minutes every week over a period of 15 weeks.

Latest statistics show that learning difficulties and disabilities are still common amongst many primary schools in Australia. It is estimated that between 5-15% of children can be affected and without intervention, the learning gap only widens as they grow older. Over the last two years Wenty Leagues has provided funds to support programs for Learning Links making it the largest contributing Club in Australia. These programs include Reading for Life ($7,895) and the Disadvantaged Childrens Education Fund ($12,000) which are dedicated to enhancing the reading skills, self-esteem and

TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH COMPASSION – SUPPORTING PARRAMATTA MISSION On Tuesday 26 February a team of 8 Wenty Leagues team members prepared, cooked and served meals to over 200 people in need through Parramatta Mission’s Meals Plus outreach program. While our volunteer work that day helped many, there are still a countless number

Together, the volunteers made this program a success by achieving the goal of enhancing each child’s reading skills, self-esteem and motivation.

PROMOTING AN ACTIVE AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLE FOR KIDS - MINIFIT Children’s obesity is a major concern in Australia as more than 1 million children are considered overweight or obese. If not addressed these children risk carrying the condition through to adulthood. As part of building a stronger community focus to address these issues, Wenty Leagues continues to partner with Minifit to help improve the growth and development of children through promoting the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle. Minifit clinics are free fitness sessions for kids run by Rugby League great, Anthony Minichiello. The day provides fun-filled activities for children aged 5-12, designed to create healthy habits early so that kids maintain them as they grow up.

LAUNCHING PAINT CUMBERLAND REaD TWILIGHT STORYTIME IN THE PARK Paint Cumberland REaD is an annual reading week promoting and celebrating the importance of language and literacy from birth. Twilight story times were held in community parks across the Cumberland area from Monday 4 March to Thursday 7 March. Wenty Leagues proudly contributed $14,000 towards this initiative whose aim is to build community awareness in supporting children’s language and literacy through fun and engaging experiences. Part of this funding also went towards placing 8 sustainably built Story Seats in parks across Cumberland encouraging families to share stories with their children in the tranquillity of nature.

CRICKET CLUB

DOMINOES

The cricket club celebrated its 60th anniversary in February, with many past players and committee members attending. The top five batting and bowling performances of all time were each awarded a memorial plaque and many old members stayed late into the night reminiscing with past team mates. Some of the original players travelled interstate to attend the celebrations. It was wonderful to see the cricket club’s history brought to life by its old players.

Our championships are scheduled to commence soon and our winners for the January/February season are as followed: 3/1 R. Gorbatenko and 10/1 C. Vella and M. Reilly, 17/1 R.Chaperon and S.Caine, 24/1 G.Bugden and J.Lowery, 31/1 Y.Adrien and A.Alderman, 7/2 Y.Adrien, 14/2 M.Reilly and W.Paruit.

Another major milestone that the cricket club celebrated was the Parramatta District Cricket Association’s 100-year anniversary, held on 7 March in the Starlight Room. A good night was had by all.

We play social Dominoes on Thursday nights in the Sports Area, names in by 7.15pm as the game commences at 7.30pm. There is a playing fee of $3.00 and prize money for those placing in first, second and third. If you have not played before our members are happy to teach you.

At the time of writing, all but two of our senior teams are in contention to make the semi-finals, so we are hoping for a few to make the Grand Finals. Our junior teams are also placed well with most in the top four, and therefore a good chance of making the finals. More on the results next journal.

Our Skills Development run in conjunction with Cricket NSW has been extremely well attended with many late registrations and kids keen to play for the club next season. This is where the kids’ love of cricket begins which then translates into a lifetime of being involved in this great sport. The government’s initiative of reimbursing children’s sport is making it easier and more affordable for parents to keep their kids active. Many of our parents have used these vouchers to pay for their kids’ cricket fees which ensures the club continues well into the future.

The interclub competition started on the 12th of February and the Wenty team had a narrow win. Late notice: It is with great sadness, that the WLC Euchre Club advises that Marion Green past away Mid-February. Also, Colin Marion, unfortunately has had an accident whilst out walking that brought on an extended hospital visit

Patricia Jolly Vice President

EUCHRE The Euchre Club plays each Wednesday near the TAB whilst the renovations are in progress, commencing at 7 p.m. Sixteen games are played, with a break after 8 games and cash prizes and club vouchers for first, second and third place. It costs $3 to play each night plus a $3 annual membership fee. There are prizes for the best aggregate each seven weeks with six aggregates per year. There is also a prize for the best annual aggregate over forty-two weeks. Any player lucky enough to win eight or more games in a row on any night also receives a small prize. On the social side there are two dinners per year. New players are always welcome. You do not need to be an expert player to participate and you will find that there is a range of ability amongst the players. You start with a partner and change partners after each game. Changing partners is fun and like any endeavour, ability improves with practice. Lessons can be arranged for those unsure of how to play or who wish to improve. If you have never played, we can teach you or if it has been some time since you played we can arrange a refresher session. One of our members, Bruce Skeen has unfortunately passed away from pancreatic cancer. Bruce was in the Palliative Care Unit at Mt Druitt Hospital. Deepest sympathies go to his loved ones and friends. Another member, Mick Prestipino, has suffered a stroke. Mick was fortunate to have been in a doctor’s surgery when the stroke occurred. Mick spent three weeks in Concord Hospital but has since been transferred to St. Joseph’s Auburn for further rehabilitation to regain use of his legs. Mick may be out of action for some time. Sympathy to Judy Bowerman who has lost her mum at 95. Shirley Keniry has recovered well from her gall bladder removal. Welcome back to Ray O’Connor who has not played for some time. Ray must have been getting lessons as he won first night back. An unfortunate event occurred on the 13th of February. Betty Kay turned up a club with five in her hand, discarded a trump, went alone and got euchred and has been spitting chips ever since. Even jolly Judy has not performed such a feat. Danny Gaal also shocked everyone on his table when he made it, lead the seven of trumps and it won. Lots of head shaking there. Results since the last journal are as follows (winning games in brackets); 9/1 1st Hertha Roedl (12), 2nd Christel Brassaud, Betty Kay, Joe Musumeci (10).

FISHING To start 2019 a fishing trip took place in mid-January and another early February as the weather and seas were kind. The January trip headed out at the normal time of 6:00am, motoring out of Kiama Harbour with a full boat of eager fishermen. The weather was good and the seas relatively calm, all on board were looking forward to a goods days fishing. We weren’t disappointed, it was a great catch. We started out wide and then came in to about 60 fathoms as the weather persisted. The haul consisted of 10 Morwong, 1 Snapper, 5 Flathead, 48 Leather Jackets, 1 Pig Fish and 31 Long fin perch. This was an exceptional catch given the poor catches of the last few trips of 2018. The biggest fish was a 1.945kg Snapper caught by Russell Harvey; this may be the biggest fish caught for some time. The biggest bag went to Mick Prestipino, nearing 13 kgs. The second trip was early February and like the last outing we had a full boat. The weather and seas were kind however there was a twist, the currents were all over the place, so it was hard to hold bottom. This being the case we remained at around 50 fathoms with the fishermen working hard for their catch. In comparison to our previous trip a much smaller number of fish was brought in; nevertheless, a great day was had by all. The catch consisted of 7 Morwong, 1 Snapper, 3 Flathead and 1 Pig Fish. The biggest fish went to Michael Ohlson, being a 1.320kg Morwong. Michael cooked and ate it that night, he said it tasted beautiful. The biggest bag went to Frank Rapa, weighing in at 3.279kg. Even though a much smaller haul, spirits were high and as usual the conversation on board was all about the fish that got away, mostly the currents were to blame. This was all in fun! Another trip is scheduled for late February which already has a full boat and another two trips are scheduled in March. The dates of the trips for 2019 are on the notice board in the Sports Bar. If you are interested in deep sea fishing on a charter boat or interested in a weekend away attending the Small Boats competition, please contact a member of the Fishing Committee. MENS BOWLS Hi Wenty Leagues Club members to the latest Club Journal report prepared for your information from the Men’s Bowling Club. With the opening of the new Plaza area in mid-February, the excitement is overwhelming with the new club facilities and the Pavilion area for the bowlers and other functions too. It is a state-of-the-art facility and with the upgrade works to our second green, everything looks a million dollars when looking from the Smith Street end back towards the newly opened main club. Our Annual Club AGM was held on Sunday 17th February 2019 where quite a few new faces were elected to the Bowls Committee and Jeff Gallagher was elected as the Bowls Secretary. Other newly elected members were Steve Baldwin, Ken Aston, John Stephenson (Emu), who have all hit the ground running assisting with social bowls and the like. Former Secretary, Graeme Roberts (Judge), moves up into the vacant Vice President’s position. Special thanks go to our outgoing Committee members of Warren Lambert, Barrie Craig, Anthony Breese and Vice President Graham Reynolds who is relocating to Tea Gardens up in the Port Stephens area of NSW. These boys did a tremendous job and any member that gives up their free time to volunteer to assist on Committee’s should be praised. The first round of the NSW Interclub State Pennants starts on Saturday 9th March. Ten weeks of home and away play will determine the section winners and whether we have any teams in the Zone Playoffs. Wenty, once again has six sides (12 players per side) in the pennant competition in grades 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 & 7. After an amazing season last year, with us claiming three Zone Flags, majority of our teams have been promoted to higher grades.

SUB CLUBS

That will make things tougher again this year but I’m sure us Magpie blokes are up for the challenge. Our Grade 1 Magpies side is one of only 12 teams in the Sydney Metropolitan Competition, so we will be mixing it with all the big-gun clubs. Wenty have secured the services of dual world champion, Brett Wilkie (QLD), as our marquee player for most of this season. Brett is also CEO of Bowls Queensland and will add a lot of professionalism and punch to our side this year. Our Club Major and Minor Fours Championships were completed during January and February with Brian Pridmore, Michael Brown, Adam Ashton, Phil Clarke winning the Major Fours, and Gary Watson, John French, Warren Lambert placing as runners up. In addition the Club Minor Singles commences on Sunday the 17th of March and the Major Pairs Championship is taking place on the 7th of April. We have introduced a very competitive social nominated pairs game on Friday mornings from 10am. Prize money is $200 every week; winners $100, runners up $60, lucky cark $40 and all teams are in the chance to win the Jackpot, which will be over $300 by next Friday. We can take a maximum of 28 sides and the sheet fills up quickly each week, so get your team in early. The Men’s Social triples (single names), is played every Tuesday from 10 am to 1pm and the Open (Mixed) nominated Social Bowls is also played on Wednesday evening from 5.30pm to 8.00pm. Now is the time for any Wenty Club members who would like to consider taking up the game of Bowls to do so as you will get a chance to use the latest Bowls facilities provided by your Club Board. SWIMMING CLUB

After a reasonably good year last year I am hopeful that our Wenty Leagues players will perform well this year.

It was good to welcome our Captain, Sean Henly back from the U.S.A on the 3rd of February, and to be advised that Shirley Ambler has started her convalescence after her recent shoulder surgery.

In the mixed fours Doreen Anderson was in a team that lost in the semi-finals, Monica Korn skipped the team that placed as runners up and John Chen was third in the team that won. Monica Korn and Barbara Hill were selected in the Australian team and they will be travelling to New Zealand to compete against the New Zealand team in May, congratulations to both ladies. The men’s and ladies’ triples are currently being played and the event is down to the quarter finals. Our remaining players are Barbara Hill, Monica Korn, Doreen Anderson and John Chen. Good luck to all competitors, results will be included in the next report. Yours in sport, Doreen Anderson Secretary

SNOOKER & BILLIARDS CLUB The Snooker and Billiard Club recently held our AGM and a new Committee was appointed. Our Tuesday night competition generally attracts about 20 players, with the highest number of players being 38. We are hoping to drive more players to join in 2019. In 2019, WLC Snooker and Billiards Club will be joining two external competitions, the Western District (as per previous years) and RSL competition which we have two teams (B&C). In the Western Districts there will be 2 x C and 1 x B team. Last year the B grade team won the Western District Competition. This is WLC Snooker and Billiards Clubs second year in the Western District Competition B Grade competition. If there is any interested in join the WLC Snooker and Billiards Club we welcome you to attend on Tuesday nights from 7pm in the Magpie Bar S&B Club Representative

SQUASH CLUB The 2019 Western Districts Autumn Pennants Competition commences in March 2019 and we currently have 15 teams registered. Our Club handicap was recently held with Tony Cardarello placing first in the Main Event and Brendan King winning the Plate Event. The Squash Club is moving ahead in 2019 with a re-vamped Junior Development Program to introduce juniors to the game of squash and eventually to supplement the ranks of our senior players who represent Wenty Leagues in the Western District Pennant Competition each season. The plan is to offer a structured program of coaching over a ten week period to guide beginners in the development of basic skills and to build on existing skills in cases where juniors already have squash experience. Members of Wenty Leagues Club who have children or grandchildren who would be interested in joining the Junior Development Program should contact our Wenty Leagues Squash Club Secretary on 0435837675 for more information.

On Sunday the 10th of February Wenty Leagues hosted the Western Metropolitan Carnival and our team performed exceptionally well. In the over 80 years 30 metres freestyle Ted Jolly claimed first place with Trevor Simpson placing third. The over 70 years resulted in a win to Rhonda Hill, with Jess Seaborn finishing in second place in both the 30 metres freestyle and the women’s open event. The 100 metres sealed handicap was won by one of our comparatively new swimmers, Antoinette Ziai. Congratulations to all these members who turn up each Sunday morning and represent our club with pride, it is great to see them achieving great results. Our members were recently saddened when our highly respected Club President, Tom Lamond was recently forced to step down because of a severe downturn to his health. He is currently undergoing treatment and the prayers and best wishes of all our members go out to Tom, wife Bev, daughter Michelle and their extended families. We know Tom is a tough country boy and his positive attitude will help him through this. John McCann Publicity Officer

WOMENS BOWLS We are back to serious business with the commencement of the District Triples and the Fours Championship, good luck to all competitors. Pennants will be starting in a couple of weeks so let’s hope we can do our club proud and bring home those flags again.

Ron Massey team hosting Hills District at 3.00pm. Off the field, the WDRLFC held it’s AGM on February the 10th this year which unfortunately saw two of the clubs most respected stalwarts step down from their positions on the Board. Mick Jordan, team manager of the team of the century, has decided to hang up the boots after many years of service on the committee but has been reappointed to the position of joint patron and Ron Bottle who has been the Club Secretary for the past 10 years, who no doubt will be sitting back with a couple of chardonnay’s enjoying his retirement. The board would like to thank both gentlemen for the years of service and we will greatly miss their wealth of knowledge and experience. The board also welcomes and congratulates Kim Greenaway on her election to the committee, the first women to assume a position on the WDRLFC board. Can’t wait for the footy to start.
