PRESIDENT’S REPORT CEO’S REPORT all who were involved in making this year’s campaign a resounding success. Every act of kindness can go a long way.

Dear Members Welcome to the August/September issue of your Wenty Journal. As we move into the second half of the year, the Master Plan construction has brought some exciting changes to the Club. While there’s plenty more in store, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on the most recent events. In July, the Club community participated in the Do Something Day campaign which was about doing something good for others and giving your best. I commend the efforts of everyone who took part in donating gently used or new sports equipment during the campaign period. I am pleased to announce that through our combined efforts, we have given Youth Off the Streets, Wentworthville a wide variety of sporting goods which will help create a positive impact on the lives of many young people in our community. On the national day to commemorate Do Something Day, Wenty Leagues welcomed Nathan Hindmarsh – the official ambassador and Nathan Cayless to the Club to present the sporting equipment donations to Youth Off the Streets Program Manager, Josh Te Tai. Along with presenting and for a bit of fun, the ex-players also took part in an exhibition game of darts with our very own Wenty Leagues CEO, Glenn Kovacs. I would like to say a big thank you to

Continuing our outstanding efforts for the community, Wenty Leagues will also provide support to a variety of organisations under the ClubGRANTS program. This year, funding has been given to support various community initiatives which cover safety, health and wellbeing, youth, social cohesion, education and employment and sustainability. The funding will improve the quality of life for many disadvantaged individuals and groups in the local community. Wenty Leagues continues to support Anthony Minichiello’s Minifit initiative and as a result, has seen it spread throughout other areas of Sydney. The clinic held in July at Ringrose Oval, was another great success attracting over 250 kids who participated in fun-filled activities aimed at developing healthy habits at an early age. Looking ahead, this year’s Magpie Family Fun Day will be held on Sunday 19 August and I encourage everyone to come down and cheer on the Wenty Magpies in three exciting matches of rugby league. This is a great family event which will also include free rides, a jumping castle and petting zoo for the kids. There will also be a special appearance by Parramatta Eels players and cheerleaders plus our very own, Macca the Magpie. On behalf of the Board, I wish all our Dads a Happy Father’s Day and I look forward to greeting you at the Club. Ian McCann President

cater for breakfast and late-night snacks, while Lawsons Bistro has added to their customary fare by introducing an alternating Senior’s Lunch Special available every Monday and Tuesday.

Dear Members Welcome to the latest edition of your Wenty Journal. Father’s Day is just around the corner and on Sunday 2 September, I invite all the Dads to celebrate Father’s Day at Wenty Leagues. We have numerous activities planned, starting with a big breakfast at Lawsons Bistro and a special lunch at Easy Eats 2145, which features a hearty serving of pork ribs or pork knuckle dishes. There will be free live music in the lounge, entertainment for the kids and to cap it off, a Father’s Day raffle with up to $3,000 worth of prizes up for grabs. Speaking of family activities, the Holiday Capers promotion has now begun and we’re giving you a chance to win a family holiday to the Gold Coast valued up to $3,500. You may enter now by purchasing selected kid’s menu items at any of our dining outlets, but be sure to be at the Club on Sunday 16 September to see if you’ve won. On the day we’ll also be raffling off $4,000 worth of passes to some of Sydney’s top attractions so don’t miss out on this fun family event. Our dining outlets continue to impress by introducing a variety of dishes to satisfy any palette. The Wenty Café has released an updated menu and continues to

Easy Eats 2145 has introduced Starlight Entertainment and Dinner Packages which include a main course and dessert that you can enjoy before you go into the show. These packages are limited so consult page 13 for how to secure a seat. Every week, the Chefs at Demolish have flexed their creativity by constructing bold and outrageous burgers designed to challenge the tastebuds. The burgers are posted on the Wenty Leagues’ Instagram and Facebook pages so make sure you follow them to find out what they have in store next. As another exciting season of Rugby League winds down, it’s tough to predict who will win the NRL Premiership. If you can’t get to the game, why not bring the family along to enjoy an afternoon of free entertainment and watch the live telecast in the Starlight Room on Sunday 30 September. Finally, the second half of the year has brought into view some exciting upcoming events - Oktoberfest and Melbourne Cup. On the back of last year’s success, this year promises to be even better so get your tickets early as places will fill up fast. Thank you all for your patience and patronage while we continue our journey of expansion to become Western Sydney’s premier hospitality venue. I look forward to greeting you at the Club. EXCITING MILESTONES REACHED Construction has passed the halfway mark for the multistorey carpark and thanks to consistent dry weather, is still on track for completion later this year. The parking area is a significant upgrade to the Club’s facilities and will offer over 780 car spaces. After taking a tour inside the work-in-progress, there are significant advantages immediately revealed about the structure. The first noticeable characteristic is the style of flow for cars moving through the levels. The style allows drivers to scan levels quickly for any availabilities making searching for spaces easier. As drivers progress through the levels, there is also significant room for turning the vehicle up or down the ramps to reduce incident and when pulling into an actual space, generous line distances create more room between parked cars. To go along with its functional qualities, attention to detail has also been placed on aesthetic appeal. The front façade includes a striking design which immediately draws attention from passer-bys on the Great Western Highway. This piece will be constructed in the coming months at the same time the elevators will be installed. Finally, construction will begin on an undercover walkway from the carpark to the Club which is monitored by CCTV to ensure safety and security for all our members and visitors.

On the opposite side of the Club, a major milestone was reached during the construction of the multi-outlet casual dining precinct. On Friday 6 July, a decking out party with ADCO and subcontractors commemorated the main structure being built for the Ground, Plaza and Level 1. Now, it is onto the next stage - structural steel works which will begin to form areas including Alfresco Dining, Pavilion and the roof.

Once again, we thank you for your continued patience and understanding. Please be assured that we are working tirelessly to ensure you continue to enjoy your Wenty Leagues experience. For regular updates, progress signage has been placed at the entrance of the Club or you can visit www.wentyleagues.com.au/master-plan.

COMMUNITY

TEAMING UP WITH PARRAMATTA EELS LEGENDS FOR DO SOMETHING DAY Wenty Leagues teamed up with Parramatta Eels legends Nathan Hindmarsh and Nathan Cayless to help inspire the local community to donate gently used or new sports equipment during the Do Something Day campaign. To contribute, Wenty Leagues placed a special donation box in the foyer which was filled with sporting equipment to be donated to Youth Off The Streets, Wentworthville. There was a great response from all our members especially the Wenty Leagues’ Sub-clubs, who all made generous contributions to the cause. On Wednesday 25 July, Wenty Leagues CEO Glenn Kovacs, along with special guests, Nathan Hindmarsh (Official Ambassador of Do Something Day) and Nathan Cayless presented the sports equipment to Youth Off The Streets Program Manager, Josh Te Tai. Wenty Leagues also welcomed radio personality, Ben Fordham who broadcasted his 2GB show live in the Wenty Lounge to thank everyone who gave their best and supported this great initiative.

BUILDING A NEW PLAYGROUND FOR OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL, WENTWORTHVILLE Last year the student leaders and student representative council of Our Lady of Mount Carmel set to work on how to make their playground more active and stimulating for all the children in their school. To raise funds for the project they organised a Fete, but it wasn’t enough to accomplish what they had planned. Thankfully, Wenty Leagues through the ClubGRANTS scheme donated $13,000 which went towards creating an all-weather playground. Construction was completed in July and the children were excited to get out there and play. According to Assistant Principal, Olimpia Pirovic, “the sandpit is like Bondi Beach at Christmas, the cubby house is always full of visitors and children wait patiently for their turn to try out the balancing bridge. Thanks to Wenty Leagues, we now have a wonderful playground that can be used all year round.” 4

LADIES BOWLS CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

WENTY HOSTS THE CUMBERLAND LOCAL BUSINESS AWARDS

Congratulations to our very own Lee Benson who won the State Champion of Champions for the Ladies Bowling Club held in Ettalong on Friday 29 May. The competition started with 102 players from all over NSW and after 4 days and 9 matches, Lee was able to break a 25-year drought to claim the title for Wenty bowls. “No one is more deserving. Lee is a fantastic person and fantastic bowler,” said Wenty Ladies Bowling Communications Officer, Diane Martin. Lee thanked her husband, Benno and Wenty Leagues for supporting her throughout the whole competition. Lee now goes on to play in the Australian Champion of Champions in Tasmania this October. Well done Lee! We’re very proud of this great achievement.

On Tuesday 29 May, Wenty Leagues was proud to sponsor and host the 2018 Cumberland Local Business Awards which recognised outstanding businesses in the local area. Joining the nominees and distinguished council members present, were Wenty Leagues President, Ian McCann and CEO, Glenn Kovacs who also had the privilege of addressing the audience and presenting a few awards. On behalf of Wenty Leagues we would like to extend our congratulations to all the winners.

DART CLUB The Western Suburbs Darts Association Summer competition has just concluded with great results for the Wenty Leagues Darts Club. The Division One, Wednesday night mixed competition was won by Wenty Leagues, six games to nil over Mount Druitt. Our Division 1 Monday night men’s teams both figured in the finals with Wenty Leagues Number 2 team going down in a hard-fought Grand Final to Mount Druitt, six games to five. Our division 2 team won their division and went on to win the Grand Final beating Riverstone RSL six games to four. Wenty Leagues is now represented by three teams in Men’s Monday division 1. Our records indicate that this is the first time we will have three teams in the Men’s Monday A Grade competition. The third aggregate will conclude 27th June. On 20th June we had the second biggest turnout of the year with 32 players competing in the darts/indoor bowls area and all were having fun. Shirley Keniry, the Dominoes secretary, continues to grace us with her presence. I was fortunate to partner with Shirley on 23/5 when she got a loner very first hand and on 6/6, when on the last hand of the night we needed a loner to win the game and Shirl came through. I tell you, when the girl is on fire she blazes. We’d love to have other Domino players come join us

‘Fish-Off’ Day out of Kiama saw a full boat. This trip was the annual ‘fish-off’ between Blacktown Workers Club and Wenty Leagues. Five from each Club represented their respective Clubs. These were five of the best fishermen based on the results for this year. As you would imagine when in competition the banter back and forth between the two Clubs was healthy. A few tall fishing stories were told during the trip. I am not sure who had the biggest tale but all in fun with laughter being the main outcome.

Colin Manton Secretary

The boat took us out wide as the seas were slight and a low swell, but typically the wind picked up and we had to move closer in where the waters were calmer.

FISHING

The catch, which may only include those fish that are worth points, comprised:

Well done Shirl.

With the increase in new members we were able to book additional fishing charters to ensure all members had an opportunity to go fishing. The weather was perfect for fishing and we had a full boat each time. Fishing was great with good catches each trip. 3rd March • 8 morwong • 5 flathead • 209 leatherjackets • 14 long finned perch The biggest bag was caught by Alf Debattista and the biggest fish was a leatherjacket, caught by Michael Nash, weighing 1.15kg. 7th April • 3 morwong • 11 flathead • 200 leatherjackets • 7 long finned perch The biggest bag was caught by Frank Rapa and the biggest fish was a leatherjacket, caught by Joe Romcek, weighing 1.3kg. 21st April • 3 morwong • 111 leatherjackets The biggest bag was caught by Fong Looi and the biggest fish was a morwong, caught by Frank Rapa, weighing 1.3kg. 5th May • 21 morwong • 9 snapper • 10 flathead • 7 pigfish Andrew Harvey caught the biggest fish, a 1.39kg morwong and Fong Looi caught the biggest bag. 26th May 2018 - Wenty Leagues Fishing Club vs Blacktown Workers Fishing Club – 28

WENTYLEAGUES.COM.AU

• 18 Morwong, • 8 long fin perch, • 25 leather jackets • 9 snapper All fish were weighed with state rules where the fish must be whole but guttered only. The biggest fish a Sargent Baker was caught by our own Fong Louie it came in at 1.175kgs. The biggest bag went to Blacktown Workers, J Cassar at 9.9kgs. It came down to the wire for the biggest fish, as it was caught on the last drop before we headed back to Kiama Wharf. Well done Fong Louie (Charlie). After weighing up the catch from Blacktown Workers 29.99kgs and then from Wenty 32.21kgs, Wenty came in overall winner. This result means Wenty Leagues remains undefeated. A great day was had by all and both Clubs look forward to next year’s ‘fishoff’ when Blacktown Workers will host it. 16th June 2018 - Unfortunately, this trip was cancelled by the Fishing Charter skipper due to bad weather and choppy seas. GOLF For the first time, the Wenty Leagues Golf Club played another Club from Gosford at Gosford RSL and successfully beat them by 246pts to 230pts. We look forward to the return game against them which will be held once again in Gosford. Our over 50s game was played with the winner being Jim Clarke. Our match play championships have now been played in grades with all 3 finals hotly contested with A Grade won by Jim Clarke defeating Frank Soballa 2/1. B Grade was won by Kel (soups) Fangupo defeating Leon Plotkans on the 18th hole and in C Grade, Graham Kenyon defeated Dennis Ainsworth on

the 21st hole. The air swing Club has some new members namely Bernie Ambrose and Dennis Ainsworth. Frank Soballa won one of our jackpot holes with a shot of 62cms which was worth $296. Good to see Lisa Jade in the winners list with a great round of 41pts. With Lisa being our only female member, we’d like to put the call out for more ladies to join our Club – check our website for more details.

Finally, the Golf Club has generously donated Golf equipment to Youth Off the Streets, Wentworthville for Do Something Day. • GRADE 7 (White) - Currently in 5th place and little hope to make the playoffs.

State Competition

Our Grade 2 team were our 2017 Grade 3 Zone 10 winners and as can be seen the rise to next Grade has proven to be a difficult hurdle. Likewise, our Grade 7 (White) side was nominated so as to give bowlers a competition game rather than be sitting on the sidelines during Pennants.

Congratulations to our state players, who put up a great fight. All these results will be in the Quinlan Shield report. Our next competition will be Ladies Singles, which will be plated on 8th August. Happy Bowling! Fay Peter Publicity officer

MENS BOWLS Welcome to the latest Club Journal report prepared for your information from the Men’s Bowling Club. Our Club Major Pairs and Minor Pairs Championships were completed during May and June with the following results: Major Pairs winners were - Franklin Fong and Andrew Baldrey (23) who defeated Cameron Curtis and Michael Harvey (18). Congratulations to Franklin and Andrew on keeping up their great form so far this year in our Club Championships. Minor Pairs winners were - Martin Fucile and Eric Crabtree (33) who defeated Daniel and Fred Baitieri (9). Well done to Martin and Eric on a well-deserved victory against stiff opposition in the Minor Pairs. The Clubs Triples and the Major – Minor Pairs Championship will commence during October. 2018 NSW State Pennants State Pennants commenced April 28 where Wenty Leagues Bowling Club nominated 6 sides participating in the 10 qualification rounds in the hope of progressing to the Zone 10 Pennant playoffs. At the time of the Journal going to print the playoffs would have been decided, however, at this stage with 3 rounds remaining, the following are details of each sides current standing in their grade: • GRADE 1 – Currently running 3rd and a good chance to make the top 4 playoffs. • GRADE 2 – Currently running 5th and little hope to make the playoffs.

The Club is proud of the performance of all our Pennant sides regardless of their current standing in their relative grades.

Playoff details will be contained in the next Journal. Our mid-week Pennants C Grade sides did not make the Zone playoffs, but our Club was happy with the way our two sides represented Wenty. Wenty Leagues Bowling have won the right to host the upcoming Grades 4 & 5 Zone 10 Playoffs to be played on 28/29 July 2018. Social Bowls and Upcoming Events Our Bowling Club played host to our Club sponsors on Wednesday 2 May to welcome them to our new Bowling green and surrounds. Special thanks go to our Clubs catering staff who provided delicious finger food and ample fluids to make the night a most enjoyable occasion. SWIMMING CLUB Our Club Championships were held on the 18th & 25th March and this concluded our season at Wenty Pool. We start again in October but, until then, we have some social activities and one swim at another pool. The Presentation Day was held in the Starlight Room on Sunday, 15th April where we enjoyed a great buffet lunch and awarded trophies to the various winners. While there were a few awards given to a spread of swimmers, it was mainly the names of Tim Miller and Howard Ambler who collected the majority of trophies – well done to all winners on their successes. The Annual Walla Ross Carnival was held on Sunday 8th July and results of this event will be listed in future reports. It was good to see the Directors and their partners present and participating in our presentation function. We thank them for their attendance and support, but it would be great if we could arrange next season to have a Directors V Committee 4 x 50 metre relay. It is something to consider, John McCann Publicity Officer

WDRLFC (NSW & RON MASSEY CUPS) INTRUST SUPER PREMIERSHIP. The season commenced on Sunday, 11 March against last year’s Premiers Penrith Panthers at Penrith. The team consisted of a majority of Wenty contracted players and after starting brilliantly led 24-0 at half time. Penrith staged a comeback in the 2nd half to make it tight but Wenty held on to win 32-24. Our next opponents were Blacktown Sea Eagles at home and another strong showing was expected. However, things did not go to plan and we were comprehensively beaten 46-0. Newcastle Knights were our guests at Ringrose but after leading well into the second half Wenty could not withstand the late challenge and were defeated 24-16. Things did not get any better Follow Us

against wests Magpies and in another disappointing performance lost 44-4. From this point things improved with successive wins against Blacktown 28-12, Penrith 16-14 and Wests magpies 26-6. With points from a bye Wenty has moved into equal second only 2 points from the leaders. Coach Nathan Cayless is working hard to keep the momentum going. RON MASSEY CUP The competition started on the 8th April with visit to the Hills district. Although the trial form leading up to this match was excellent it did not carry over and although leading clearly at half time were ultimately beaten 24-22. Things turned around next game with good win 32-22 against Cabramatta, but Round 3 versus Guildford at home saw another loss 24-20. Round 4 our opponents were Penrith Brothers at Ringrose and in a game, that reached no heights Wenty were able to scramble to a 18-16 win.

hands to get what is at the moment and under achieving team to play to their ability. HARVEY NORMAN WOMEN’S LEAGUE. Our venture into the Women’s League to date has not yet produced a win with several heavy losses to much more experienced teams. This aside the girls have not given up and have tried to the end of every game. With a new coach recently appointed improvement is noticeable and trust that a victory in the near future will result. All information re WDRLFC draws for 2018 can be found on our website www. wentymagpies.com.au. You can become a WDRLFC member by joining on line or at the can bar on game days. Joining fee is $20 which includes entry to all Wenty home games and a Wenty cap which in itself is great value. Ron Bottle Secretary
