WENTY LEAGUES | THE JOURNAL | FEBRUARY, MARCH & APRIL 2025

PRESIDENT’S Report

Dear Members,

Welcome to another exciting and eventful year we have planned at Wenty Leagues.

Looking back at 2024, it was a hugely successful year for the club. Despite ongoing construction and the prolonged tough economic conditions we managed to deliver a record full year revenue while maintaining affordable food & beverage pricing and increasing our community funding support.

We are continuing to work on evolving your Entertainment Hub and thank you for your continued patience. Stage 1 of the project is on track for completion as we near the end of Q1. Following this milestone, we will seamlessly continue with our Stage 2 and 3 works to further enhance your experience at Wenty.

December also saw the start of our renewable energy journey, with the first of many solar panels being laid as we work towards a greener future and lowering our carbon footprint.

Additionally, in the coming months, you will notice updates taking place in our foyer area, ensuring our main entrance remains welcoming for our members and guests. Your support during this time is greatly appreciated as we work through these important updates.

In further December news, I would like to thank our members for their generosity and support of Wenty Leagues’ community initiatives over the festive season.

Once again, the membership rallied to support the Christmas Toy Drive and we received an overwhelming response with all toys being collected and donated to families with seriously ill children at Ronald McDonald House, Greater Western Sydney.

Our ‘Plate for a Mate’ initiative, was embraced by our patrons. The impact of this initiative was felt across our local community, as the donated plates provided a hearty Christmas lunch to individuals and families who may have otherwise struggled during the festive season.

Carols on Ringrose grew to another level, attracting well over 4,000 people who came together to sing Carols and enjoy a spectacular firework display on Ringrose Oval. The entertainment line-up was outstanding with live performances and headlined by everyone’s favourite Heeler, Bluey and her little sister Bingo. This event raised a total of $12,500 which went towards supporting Youth Off the Streets initiatives to help at-risk youths in our community.

Continue reading to find out more about the fantastic work that Wenty has been doing in and around the local community on pages 6-9 of this magazine.

Applications for the 2025 ClubGRANTS scheme are now open, and we welcome and call upon proposals for funding from all local not-for-profit community groups, charities, and organisations. Funded by local clubs and administered by Cumberland Council, the ClubGRANTS scheme is designed to assist and promote local community priorities, namely community welfare and social services, community development, health services, and employment assistance activities.

In conclusion, notice and invitation to the 67th Annual General Meeting of the Club is extended to all members to be held on May 25th, here in the club. Remember to circle the date in your calendar.

On behalf of the Board, I thank you all for your continued patronage and look forward to seeing you around the club in 2025.

Warm regards, Ian

Carols on Ringrose – Always a Night to Remember

What a fantastic turnout for this year’s annual community event, Carols on Ringrose! Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us for a night filled with magical festive memories.

The event proved to be a true celebration of the holiday season, with lively performances to entertain attendees of all ages. Highlights included the energetic appearance by Bluey and her little sister Bingo, the Field Brothers, and the Christmas Groove Band. Guests enjoyed delicious offerings from food trucks, rides for the kids, and a spectacular fireworks display to cap off the evening. The enthusiasm and energy from everyone who attended made the event an overwhelming success and the perfect way to kick off the holiday season.

In addition to the fun and festivities, the event also had a meaningful impact. Thanks to the incredible generosity of those in attendance, $12,500 was raised for our community partner, Youth Off the Streets. These funds will go directly towards supporting programs that assist children and young people facing homelessness and disadvantage.

The money raised will help fund vital initiatives that empower young people to overcome challenges and build brighter, more hopeful futures. We are deeply grateful to all who contributed, whether through attendance, donations, or volunteer efforts.

Plate for a Mate: Making Christmas Special for Those in Need

While the festive season often brings joy and celebration, it is also a time of hardship for many in our community. Last Christmas, members and guests demonstrated incredible generosity by supporting Parramatta Mission through the “Plate for a Mate” initiative.

A total of 277 Plates were sold, with $2,770 donated to Parramatta Mission. The funds raised ensured that individuals experiencing homelessness, financial hardship, or isolation could enjoy a Christmas lunch.

For many, a Christmas lunch is not just a meal but a vital opportunity to feel cared for, connected, and part of a community.

Spreading a Little Christmas Cheer to Families at Ronald McDonald House

We were once again humbled by the incredible generosity of our community, with overwhelming donations contributing to the success of this year’s Donate a Gift initiative. These donations were to support seriously ill or injured children and their families staying at Ronald McDonald House Westmead, providing them with much-needed comfort and joy during difficult times.

Our members donated thoughtful gifts, ensuring that families who find themselves away from home

and loved ones this Christmas still felt cared for. The generous donations were delivered directly to Ronald McDonald House, where they were given to children and families during the holiday season, brightening their spirits as they navigate challenging medical journeys.

We are proud to continue our partnership with Ronald McDonald House Westmead and are deeply grateful for the kindness and support shown.

Coins for a Cause

Throughout 2024, Wenty Leagues’ maintenance team collected the coins thrown by visitors into the water fountain at the club entrance.

We are pleased to announce that a total of $9,249.20 was raised from these contributions, which has been proudly donated to Sydney Children’s Hospital Bear Cottage, a leading palliative care facility for children. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all who contributed.

Putting Smiles on the Faces of Sick Kids

Staff were invited to witness firsthand the incredible work of The Humour Foundation’s Clown Doctor Program at Westmead Children’s Hospital. For the past few years, we’ve had the privilege of supporting this remarkable initiative, and to see it in action was nothing short of inspiring.

The Clown Doctors, who are internationally trained entertainers, bring far more than just laughter—they offer a moment of light and joy during some of the most challenging times for children and families.

Their unique ability to bring comfort and distraction to children, even in the most worrying moments, was evident. The joy they bring extends beyond the children they perform for—it lifts the spirits of parents and hospital staff as well.

The work of the Clown Doctors serves as a beautiful reminder of just how impactful a smile can be, even in the most difficult of circumstances.

Helping Zen Tea Lounge Foundation Wrap Up Christmas

Zen Tea Lounge Christmas Gift Wrapping event was a wonderful day where the true spirit of giving and community came to life.

Held at the cosy Zen Tea Lounge café, the event brought together local organisations, businesses, and even politicians, all united by one incredible cause: wrapping 300 presents for children in need. The event was filled with energy and excitement, especially with the added twist of a friendly competition: which team could wrap the most presents? Cheers and laughter echoed throughout the café as teams got busy.

A heartfelt congratulations goes to the Zen Tea Lounge Foundation for hosting such a successful and heartwarming event.

Club Industry Domestic Violence Training Program

Some of our team took part in the Club Industry Domestic Violence Training Program, hosted by Mounties Group. This key event aimed to provide clubs and industry leaders with the tools and knowledge necessary to support individuals affected by domestic and family violence. The two-day program offered valuable insights into addressing these critical issues and served as a platform for collaboration with other

clubs committed to making a meaningful difference in their communities.

The training was facilitated by experts in the field, including Arely Carrion from Mounties Group, Gabrielle Morrissey of Bloom Boom Consulting, and Michelle Pascoe from Optimum Operating Procedures and Services. The program also highlighted the important work being done by organisations such as StandbyU Foundation, No to Violence, and the Centre for Women’s Economic Safety, among others.

We are proud to be part of this movement, which seeks to offer real help to those experiencing domestic and family violence. We remain committed to ensuring support is always available to those who need it most.

ANZAC Day is a day of remembrance that honours the memory of Australian & New Zealand Army Corp soldiers who fought and perished during the First World War. In addition, it serves as a day of reflection for all soldiers who have lost their lives fighting for their countries.

The day has been recognised with a National public holiday since 1927, and by the mid-1930’s the rituals we know today were well and truly established, including dawn services, marches, and two-up.

The phrase heard each and every year, ‘Lest We Forget’ is recited after the Ode of Remembrance, which is derived from the poem “For the Fallen”, written by Laurance Binyon. The poem reads“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.”

BOWLING CLUB

Wenty Leagues Bowling Club Quarterly Highlights

As the calendar turned over to a new year, Wenty Leagues Bowling Club remained a hub of excitement, skill, and camaraderie.

From championship victories to festive events, here’s a look back at an action-packed period over the last three months.

2025 Club Championship Results

The greens were alive with competition, and several thrilling matches highlighting the talent within the club:

• Minor Pairs:

Scott Lambert & Lloyd Gartland claimed victory, defeating Joy Loh & John French 20-12.

• Women’s Minor Singles:

Geraldine Baldwin dominated, securing a 25-10 win over Gina Spiteri.

• Major Pairs:

Edy Williams & Shaun Nelson triumphed, outlasting Chuck Fung & Dale Maitland in a tight 21-16 contest.

• Mixed Triples:

Lyn Wallace, Nathan Townsend, and Adam Wallace powered to a 27-13 win over Chrissy Hillman, Col Malley, and Dave Crelley.

Congratulations to all competitors for their outstanding efforts!

Star Performances Beyond the Club

Wenty bowlers shone brightly on external stages, too.

• Franklin Fong secured the Merrylands Night Prestige Singles title, defeating John Glennie in an epic final.

• Peter Swan teamed up with his nephew Matty to win the Illawarra South Pacific Pairs, continuing the Swan family’s stellar tradition in this prestigious event.

Men’s Single Gender State Pennant Success

The Men’s Single Gender State Pennant season brought both challenges and triumphs:

• Division 1 battled fiercely, taking the best-of-5 regional series against Merrylands to the wire, with Wenty claiming game 1. Despite a valiant effort, Merrylands edged the final match by a few shots.

• Division 3 reached the final but narrowly lost to Merrylands in a tense finish.

• Division 4 brought home the glory, defeating Burwood Diggers in dominant fashion to claim the flag. This victory means the team will represent Wenty at the State Finals in Soldiers Point this March.

Congratulations to all our players for their determination and skill throughout the season!

Community Spirit & Festive Celebrations

The annual Ham & Pork Gala Days brought the club community together in the lead-up to Christmas. With 70-80 bowlers hitting the greens, these festive events were a resounding success. A special thanks to Pendle Ham & Bacon for their support and competitive pricing on the delicious prizes.

We also celebrated our annual members Christmas Party with over 100 people enjoying the company of one another. The refreshments were flowing, the band playing and buffet smorgasbord was a hit by all. It is a wonderful tradition, and the Bowls Committee was delighted that they were in a strong financial position to provide all this on the day at no cost to the members.

Club Updates & Announcements

• 2025 Annual General Meeting: Mark your calendars for Sunday 23 February in the Pavilion. Doors close at 10am sharp.

• New Online Store:

The Wenty Bowls Online Store is live! Members and supporters can explore the Wenty Magpies gear and enjoy exclusive items, including the new pennant polos—all members receive one free. Visit the store at thesuf.com.au/wenty.

Platinum Pennant Excitement

The Platinum Pennant season kicks off in early April, with Wenty preparing an exciting squad of 12. This year’s team welcomes marquee players Kane and Jacob Nelson from Brisbane. Kane, a 20-year-old Australian squad member, recently won two U25 World Titles in Hong Kong (singles and mixed pairs), while Jacob, 25, boasts several Australian titles.

The Nelson brothers will debut at the Sydney Teams Masters, held at Cabramatta from 3-6 March. Wenty’s side — Jacob Nelson, Trent Whittingham, Emmett McLeod, and Rohan Dennis, with Kane Nelson as Manager and Coach — is set to compete against the best of State, National, and International talent. Come along to support the players if you can.

Upcoming Pennant Season & Twilight Bowls

State Open Pennants commences on Saturday 22 February. Members are encouraged to keep an eye on the noticeboard for trial match updates or add their names to the unavailable list if necessary.

To sharpen your skills, weekly Pennant drills and practice sessions will take place every Wednesday at 4pm. Following practice, the club will trial a new version of Twilight Social Bowls at 5.30pm, promising a fun and engaging experience for all participants.

FISHING

The rescheduled fishing trip went ahead in October; however the details were not provided only to say the guys on board fished in all different depths but still couldn’t hold bottom. Those on board did manage to catch a few. The wind picked up again and made it unpleasant on the water.

The biggest fish went to Nader a Morwong weighing in at 1.01kg. There were a lot of Sergeant Bakers caught on the day as well.

The November trip was more comfortable than the October trip. The sea was calmer and even though it was difficult to hold bottom at some depths, the captain manoeuvred his boat to different depths to assist in the catching. At sixty metres the fish started to bite. Victor Song caught a 3.21kg Snapper and Victor also had the biggest bag with 6.9kg, not bad!

Another Snapper weighing around 2kg and few Flatheads at 1.2kg were also brought in.

Small Boats weekend went ahead with fewer numbers than expected, nevertheless those in attendance had a good time with several fish caught. Some motored out to 100 metres or more and caught some decent sized fish. Others stayed around 50 metres or less. They too were able to bring in a decent feed, mainly Flatheads, some measuring in excess of 45cm.

12/12

Robert Garden & Antoinette Zaia

Gil Chaperon & Robbie Chaperon

Josie Moncrieff & Peter Zaia

The final trip of the year in December, went ahead with all those onboard looking forward to a great day. They were not disappointed. Being on the water at 6am and heading out for that first drop within the hour had those on board quite eager.

SUB CLUB Reports

The weather was good, the seas reasonable to start with. By 9.30am the wind had picked up and made holding bottom at 130 metres very difficult. The captain moved again to a position where holding bottom would be a bit easier.

The fish caught consisted of 8 Morwong, 4 Snapper, 1 Leather Jacket, 1 Long Finned Perch, 37 Flathead and 10 Sergeant Bakers. The catch was well spread out amongst all on board.

The biggest fish was a Snapper weighing 1.81kg and also the biggest bag went to Lewis with 8.7kg. A good day’s fishing with everyone taking home some decent fish.

The Fishing Club’s AGM is set for Saturday 1 March at 2pm. Nominations for committee members is required by February 2025, see the noticeboard.

Till next tide

GOLF

Welcome back from the Wenty Leagues Social Golf Club and to our first report for 2025. I trust that everyone had safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year. Let’s hope any resolutions made are and remain achievable, but if not, then at least enjoy what 2025 has to offer.

We started the new year with our Winter Ambrose played at Leonay with Aaron Dixon, Tim Fuhrmann, Gabriel Mezzatesta and Jarod Simonetta taking the win. Our runners up were Tim Willet, Ryan Payne, Domonic Scali and Charlie Ghaleb.

Our next game was the Memorial Trophy held at Penrith with the following results:

A grade winner Jim Clarke and runner up Frank Soballa.

B grade winner Matt Pittas and runner up Norm Hindy.

C grade winner Frank Pagano and runner up Alan Thompson. Congratulations to all.

Our Gosford Leagues Club challenge took place at the Gosford course, but we were unfortunately defeated 363 points to 354. I’m sure home course advantage was at play.

Our Club and Handicap championship results from November last year were as follows:

Club Champions

Grade Winner Runner Up

A Grade Ryan Payne Frank Soballa

B Grade Kelekolio Fangupo (Soup) Norm Hindy

C Grade John Iocca Frank Pagano

Handicap Champions

Grade Winner Runner Up

A Grade Charlie Ghaleb Rei Reihana

B Grade Norm Hindy Tim Fuhrmann / Danny Chaiban (tied scores)

C Grade John Iocca Frank Pagano

Well done to all of our players.

On the 1st December, Penrith hosted our yearly Ham and Chook Day and I hope everyone used their gifts wisely over the holiday period.

The President vs Captain Day was played at Studley Park with the Captains team emerging victorious, however, the Presidents team will come back stronger this year.

Our final round of the COW was played at Antill Park on the 15th December between Brian Adams and Sione Fangupo. The winner was Brian Adams with an impressive result of 6 and 5 considering he had to give Sione 11 shots. Well done, Brian.

Rounding out our calendar events was our Patrons Day which saw Frank Pagano take the win. Unfortunately, our patron Laurie Capovilla could not make the round but supplied some generous prizes so please be sure to offer him your thanks when you see him next and offer Frank a heartfelt congratulations.

We had a Clubman event which is an accumulation of points gained throughout the year based on attendance and wins. Our 2024 winner was Manatu Fatu. Congratulations Manatu on a great year.

Our first event of 2025 is the guzzler of guzzlers. This is open to anyone that has won a Trophy Day during the previous year and top of the pile was Steve Adams. Congratulations Steve.

Finally, at Wentworth Falls we had our jackpot go off yet again. This was achieved by Tim Fuhrmann, getting his shot to 28cm on the 12th hole, scooping himself over $600. Great shot Tim.

That concludes our first 2025 report. Remember that we are always looking for new members, so if you are interested or know someone who may be keen, please check the sub club website and the club bulletin boards for contact details.

Kind Regards.

Spinning for a Cause

2 charity table tennis tournaments were held in 2024, to raise funds for cancer research, attracting over 180+ participants from the local community. The event featured different competitive divisions, allowing players of all skill levels to join in the fun while supporting a meaningful cause.

The tournament brought together players, spectators, and volunteers, all united in their commitment to helping cancer patients and advancing research. Each division showcased thrilling matches, with participants ranging from beginners

to seasoned players, creating an exciting and inclusive atmosphere.

The tournament successfully raised a substantial amount, with all proceeds directed towards the Cancer Council: Do it for Cancer and the Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre. The organising committee expressed their appreciation for the community’s enthusiastic participation in this important cause and to all sponsors who made it all possible.

As we wrapped up 2024 and celebrate the year’s achievements, we’re deeply grateful for the support of our members, partners, and the entire community. We look forward to even more success and growth ahead!

We’ll carry this momentum into 2025 and finish even stronger!

Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership & Ron Massey Cup

Happy New Year everyone. After the break the Ron Massey squad returned to training in Monday 13 January which was quite a welcome back and ‘trying’ training session especially for those who may have gained a kilo or two over the Christmas period.

The Ron Massey has 2 trials booked in thus far for Friday 21 February v St Marys at 7.30pm and Saturday 1 March v Cabramatta at 4.00pm with both games scheduled for Ringrose Park.

Round 1 for 2025 sees our Ron Massey playing at home against Ryde Eastwood on Saturday 15 March with a 4.00pm kick off, and the Sydney Shield at 2.00pm so if you need your fix of rugby league Ringrose is the place to be. The HNWP will once again have a later start to their season, to coincide with the NRLW, with their round 1 game set for Monday 7 July at NSWRL COE with a 7.00pm kick off. The game will be live streamed via NSWRL.

Once the full season draw for Ron Massey Cup and Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership becomes available via NSWRL it will be published on our website and Facebook page, and will be displayed in the Magpie Bar near the trophy cabinets.

We wish both our HNWP and RMC teams the best of luck this season and hopefully come home with 2 premierships.

All information relating to the WDRLFC including complete draws for the Harvey Norman Women’s and Ron Massey Cup teams can be found on our website wentymagpies.com.au
