Construction on Stage B to deliver premium car parking spaces, improved pedestrian access and a new grand entrance foyer has already passed the halfway mark. As you can see from the aerial photos, the concrete pour is complete and underneath, the majority of the formwork and propping has been stripped out and the installation of lights, sprinklers and stormwater is underway. Patrons will soon be able to utilise this parking area over the coming months. Red Panda Noodles is now officially open in our multi-outlet casual dining precinct, The Plaza. Following on will be the construction of our new premium dining offering, Char, and cocktail lounge, Envy which makes up Stage C of the Master Plan. During construction, hoarding will be set up to minimise

the disruption. We encourage patrons to use the other entry point to the Starlight Room located on the right-hand side of the Wenty Lounge Bar. Other areas of the club will have limited accessibility however we will keep you informed of any changes to our weekly activities. Additionally, you can stay-up-to-date with the planned changes of by visiting www.wentyleagues.com.au/ masterplan or our social media pages. As we continue to improve our facilities, we appreciate your patience and are working hard to minimise disruption.

THE JOURNAL

President’s Report Dear Members I’d like to congratulate all my fellow Board members for being returned to the board by the members in the May elections. I am humbled by the great show of support and endorsement from our members and look forward to working with the team again over the next 2 years. Congratulations also goes to Trevor Simpson O.A.M. on being elected as Vice President. Trever has been on the Board since 1999 and his contributions to numerous Club initiatives have been invaluable. I look forward to working with him in this new role. Adam Cromack will continue to serve as Director and I sincerely thank him for his hard work and dedication during his tenure as Vice President. This continuity reflects the belief our members have in the Board and Management team to strengthen and solidify Wenty Leagues’ status as the community’s venue of choice for exceptional hospitality. The opening of Red Panda Noodles marks the official conclusion to Stage A of the Master Plan as the final outlet of our casual

dining precinct, The Plaza. Red Panda Noodles offers wok-tossed dishes inspired by your favourite Asian recipes. The Master Plan focus will move to the completion of Stage B; the delivery of premium car parking spaces, improved pedestrian access and a new grand entrance foyer which will follow closely and is on track to be delivered prior to Christmas. At this time, we will also be delivering part of Stage C, the a la carte steak and seafood restaurant named Char and cocktail lounge named Envy. As these works progress, we appreciate your patience and assure you that we are working hard to minimise disruption. On another note, for a second year in a row, Wenty Leagues have been announced as finalists in multiple categories in the Clubs & Community Awards. Our many community projects over the previous year were recognised as having a significant positive impact in the local community. Named in the categories of Disability, Welfare & Social Inclusion, Clubs in Collaboration and Arts & Culture is a testament to Wenty Leagues’ dedication toward improving the lives of everyone in our community. Following on from our Highly Commended Award last year, we hope to be announced as category winners at the ceremony this coming November. However, regardless of the results, we continue our outstanding efforts through our partnership with a

variety of local community organisations. This year, approximately $114,181 in cash and in-kind funding has already been committed to support various community initiatives and further funds will be dedicated to more projects covering safety, health and wellbeing, youth, social cohesion, education and employment and sustainability under the ClubGRANTS program. We look forward to announcing the supported organisations in the next Journal. On behalf of the Board I wish all our Dads a Happy Father’s Day and I look forward to seeing you at the Club. THE JOURNAL

CEO’s Report Dear Members Welcome to the latest edition of your Wenty Journal. As you’ve no doubt seen the Master Plan redevelopment has passed the halfway point and we’re excited to unveil a brand-new outlet in The Plaza, Red Panda Noodles. Now officially complete, look forward to The Plaza bringing a variety of meals with tastes to suit everyone’s palate. Our talented team of chefs will be adding some delicious new items to the menu at Chefs Grill, Pizza Mama and Crave Desserts. Simply visit www. theplaza. wentyleagues.com.au to download the full menus or see page 8 for some highlighted dishes. As we continue to strengthen our commitment to the community, I’m pleased to report that last month’s sponsorship of an exclusive VIP Vmax Red Carpet premiere screening of Toy Story 4, was a great success. In partnership with Ronald McDonald Charities, Greater Western Sydney, the event gave seriously ill children and their families a chance to relax and enjoy a special night away

from the hospital. I’m exceedingly proud of how the team at Wenty Leagues relishes the opportunity to give back and provide relief to families who are going through difficult times. Thanks to all the organisers for making this a memorable night. You can read more about Wenty Leagues’ recent community efforts on the following pages. Our final High Tea for the year will be in September and we’re taking on a ‘Think Pink’ floral theme. A great school holiday activity, the popularity of this event continues to grow. If you’re yet to experience a high tea there’s no better place to start. There will be a selection of finger sandwiches, miniature cakes and sweet treats on offer so make sure to book early to avoid disappointment. Father’s Day is also a special day at Wenty Leagues, and I invite all the Dads to celebrate here at the Club. Among the activities planned will be some great meal offers at Chefs Grill along with free live music in the Wenty Lounge and a Father’s Day raffle with up to $3,000 worth of prizes up for grabs. Over the coming weeks our Ocean Adventures Promotion will begin and we’re giving you a chance to win a cruise to some breathtaking Pacific Island paradises. There will be one Royal Caribbean Cruise to giveaway each week onboard the luxurious ‘Voyager of the Seas’ vessel. In total we have 10 to be won during the entire promotional period - see page 6 for entry details.

series to see which team will be crowned the 2019 Premiers. At this point it’s tough to predict a winner but you can watch all the drama unfold on the big screens in the Magpie Bar. Finally, I’d like to give my congratulations to the Board of Directors for being re-elected and to all our members who attended the AGM. Thank you all for your continued support and patronage and I look forward to seeing you at the Club. Glenn Kovacs Chief Executive Officer

Sub Clubs CRICKET CLUB We have recently completed the cricket season for 2018/19 and are already starting to commence registrations for next season. If you are interested in playing in 2019/20 you will need to register on our website. Our Junior Presentation held in May was attended by over 350 kids and parents and we had the pleasure of Cricket NSW players Baxter Holt and Harry Conway in attendance. Three new life members were honoured at the presentation: Kathy Pettitt, Chad Radford and Danny Munro who between them have given over 70 years of service to the cricket club. The Senior Presentation took place that same evening and again the new life members were feted. Our AGM was held on 27 May and was well attended. The following office bearers were elected unopposed: Justin Isaacs – President, Rob Willis – Vice President, Juanita Di Angelo – Secretary, Kathy Pettitt – Treasurer, Chad Radford – Senior Grades Secretary, Gavin Caine – Junior Grades Secretary and the following were elected as ordinary committee members: Dave Shaw, Ganesh Mylvaganam, Giri Shanmuganathan, Jayaratnam Jayapragash, John Kennedy, Karthik Ramaprasad, Athavan Natkuna. DART CLUB Congratulations to all our teams who have just completed the Western Sydney Darts League Summer competition. Our Monday night teams finished first and third in division one. Our number two team led by John Rook won the minor premiership, but went down in a hard fought grand final. Our Division three team also went down in the grand final after running second in the competition. Better result though from our Wednesday night mixed teams as they went on to be minor premiers and also took out the Grand Final. Also congratulations to Wenty Darts players as Marlou Sarabie beat Dennis Sario in the Western Sydney Darts Leagues A Grade singles, Pam Gardner beat Andrea Hendly in the Ladies B Grade finals and Andriy Chirnysh and Greg Hislop won the mens A grade doubles. Well done to all our Wenty players. In our club competitions the results were: Ken Darke Trophy: Winners: Michele Blommestien and Stephan Woolly. Runners up: Andriy Chirnysh and Con Genares Dennis Cromack open singles: Mens Winner: Con Genares, Runner up Kim Anderson Ladies Winner Andrea Hendly, Runner up Kim Rousell. Join us any Friday in the Magpie Bar for a fun night of darts. David Harrison President

DOMINOES The Dominoes Club plays each Thursday at 7.30 pm in the Magpie area. It costs $3 to play and registration is required by 7.15 pm as it takes 15 minutes to organize the game. There is a draw for partners each night. The games are played over 5 sets and the set is completed when one team has won 5 games. WENTYLEAGUES.COM.AU

Whoever wins the most games on the night is the winner. In the case of ties the winner is whoever lost the least games. If still no outright winner there is a countback from the fifth set. There are annual championships and the Dominoes puts on a dinner for the presentation to the various championship winners. There are championships for men’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles, men’s singles and women’s singles. The game is block dominoes and is easy to play but there is strategy and skill involved. Any member of the Wenty Leagues is eligible to play. Come along and have a game. It is very easy to learn the basics. Prizes each night are $20 first, $10 second and $5 third. Most games involve two pairs competing against each other. If the total number of players is odd, and there are a lot of odd players, there may be a singles game. There is often a lot of dabba dabba dos. The results of the 2019 AGM elections shown in the last journal were incorrect. The correct results are as follows: Patrons

EUCHRE The Euchre Club plays each Wednesday near the TAB whilst the renovations are in progress commencing 7.30 p.m. Sixteen games are played, with a break after 8 games and cash prizes & club vouchers for first, second and third. It costs $3 to play each night plus a $3 annual membership fee. There are prizes for the best aggregate each seven weeks with six aggregates per year. There is also a prize for the best annual aggregate over forty-two weeks. Any player lucky enough to win eight or more games in a row on any night also receives a small prize. On the social side there will be a Christmas dinner. New players are always welcome. You do not need to be an expert player to participate and you will find there is a range of ability amongst the players. You start with a partner and change partner after each game. Changing partners is fun. Like any endeavour, ability improves with practice. Lessons can be arranged for those unsure of how to play or who wish to improve. If you have never played, we can teach you. If it has been some time since you played we can arrange a refresher session. Results since the last journal are as follows (winning games in brackets); 24/4 1st Ron Betteridge (12), 2nd Judy Bowerman, Judy Byrnes, Terry Scott, Bill Seinor (11) 1/5 1st Caroline Arona, Joe Brassaud, Col Levingston, Terry Scott (11)

The second aggregate for 2019 was won by Bill Seinor with 62 points and runner up was Pommie Ron Betteridge on 58 points. The interclub team, after 30 May, is running seventh with three wins and six losses. Sadly we have lost another member. Unfortunately, long time member John Long lost his battle with cancer. There will be no more Johnny Specials. John will be missed by his euchre comrades. Vale John Long. It has been sad year so far as Bruce Skeen, Marion Green and now John Long have all gone to god. One of our past members is suffering from cancer. We hope his treatment is successful. John Chen turns up after some months and has an excellent score of 14 to win easily after a third the previous week. Give us a chance John and stick to bowls. To update you regarding Mick Prestipino, I can tell you his stroke definitely has not affected his reneging ability. There’s been a couple of miracles since the last report. The Surly Canary (aka Shirley Keniry) had a win on May 8, the first in my time. Shirley also took great joy in mocking me because I was stuck on a table for a long time. Some new players have joined the club. Husband and wife Richard and Doris Pocock played a couple of times and then informed us they will return in a few months after their round the world trip. FISHING Since the last report we have two trips scheduled one late April and one in May. The scheduled trip for May was cancelled by the boat skipper due to very poor weather and rough seas. So, for the safety of all who were booked to go; it did not proceed, safety first always. The late April trip did go ahead as planned and the seas while not perfect were acceptable for fishing especially when you talk to the mad keen fishermen who were book to go! The morning started out with rough seas and strong winds with a chop that the skipper plotted our way through. The weather improved by 10am with the wind calming and the current not too bad as the fishermen could hold bottom. Fishing was in 40 metres, not too deep on the way down but winding back in, it felt more like a 100 metres by the end of the trip. The boat moved with the swell, the skipper had everything under control, and we were able to continue fishing up to 1:00pm when lines up was the call. The deck hand then got busy gutting the fish and the skipper took count of what was caught so that fish limits were not exceeded. All undersize fish were

As were all on board as they discussed and retold that monster fish that jumped off just as it was all but in the boat – you saw it they would say. Trips are scheduled for June and for every month to the end of the year. We also have our second small boats weekend scheduled in November. A list of the pending fishing trips is in the gaming area for all to see. If you are interested in joining the fishing club or would just like to know more please contact a committee member. INDOOR BOWLS Since the last report there has been quite a few results. Doreen Anderson skipped a Ladies Team that was defeated in the semi-finals. John Chen was lead in the winning Men’s Fours. Men’s Singles and Ladies Singles will be finalised this Sunday. John Chen in the Men’s Singles and Monika Korn and Barbara Hill in the Ladies Singles. Results will be in the next Journal. The Australia verses New Zealand Test Match held last month in New Zealand were Monika Korn won gold in the Ladies Pairs. Unfortunately, Barbara Hill did not win a medal this time. NSW other representative, Ian Ogilvie who is a member of Wenty Leagues Club, but not a member of the Indoor Bowls Club, won the Men’s Singles and the Six Bowl Mixed Pairs, claiming 2 gold medals. After two and a half days intense competition, it came down to the last bowl on the last end (needing a measure) to decide the test match in New Zealand’s favour. Congratulations to our bowlers on their efforts. Metropolitan Championships were held over the long weekend with the results as follows: Geoff Owen’s Triples – 2nd Barbara Hill Triples – Winner John Chen – 3rd Place – Men’s Singles Doreen Anderson – 3rd – Pairs Monika Korn – 2nd – Pairs The NSW State Team will be announced on the 30 June and will be in the next report. MENS BOWLS It has been a great few months on the bowling greens for Wenty Men’s Bowls with the annual inter-club pennant season heading towards the State Finals. Our Grade 1 boys were the first to punch their ticket into the State Playoffs at Forster. The side finished second after the home and away season in the powerful Sydney Metro competition. Now the top six clubs from Sydney (Engadine, Wenty Leagues, Cabramatta, Mt Lewis, Belrose and

WENTYLEAGUES.COM.AU

Taren Point), join the 10 top clubs from the Country conferences to make up the last 16 in the state. Wenty have drawn Park Beach (Coffs Harbour), Taren Point and East Maitland in their section. The top two sides from each section will then move through to the quarter-finals. The other Wenty men’s pennant side that have had a ‘fairy-tale’ run is the Grade 5 side. With most of the boys backing up from winning Zone 10 Grade 6 title last year, many thought it would be a tough year on the greens having been promoted up a grade this year. The Wenty Grade 5 side didn’t listen to any of that negativity or the arrogance of some of their close neighbouring opponents, who prematurely thought they had the Zone title in the bag! Pressure in sport is a big leveller and our boys proved that the ‘tortoise’ approach of just ‘chipping’ away is the sure road to victory. They had to endure a marathon four full matches over the weekend with each match being sudden-death! Grade 5 now head to The Greens The Entrance Club on the Central Coast where they will do battle against Macksville, Bega and Mt Lewis. Likewise, if the team finishes in the top two after the three sectional matches, they will move through to the knock-out stages. An honourable mention to our Grade 6 side who made the Zone 10 play-offs, going down to eventual champions, Concord Community Club. Similarly, the Grade 6 boys had won the Zone title last year and were promoted up a grade, so they did exceptionally well to make the Zone finals once again. The Wenty Men’s Bowling Club were thrilled to be selected by Zone 10 to again host pennant finals for Grade 2 and 6. The greens, weather and support from the main club were again first-class and allowed us to showcase our magnificent club and facilities to the many visiting players and spectators that were ‘blown’ away by what we have to offer. Again, a big thanks to Kristy Fagan and her Functions team that do a magnificent job for us and all the sub-clubs too! In club championships, we have seen finals of our two major events done and dusted in recent weeks. Our grade 1 players have certainly been showing their dominance when it comes to the major club championships. In the blue-ribbon, Major Singles, it was Grade 1 skip, Trent Whittingham, (formerly Penrith BC), that broke through for his inaugural singles victory. Whittingham defeated long-term member and young-gun, Anthony Breese, 31-25, in a highly entertaining final. Whittingham now goes onto represent Wenty Leagues in the Zone 10 Champion of Champion Singles in late August. It was a big victory for Mark ‘Scruffy’ Barton and Wenty Bowls Coordinator, Cameron Curtis, in the final of the Major Pairs. Lead, Scruffy, had a day out on the greens and laid a great platform for his skip. The boys defeated Jeff Gallagher and Brendan Conway (formerly The Hills), with all these guys being part of the grade 1 side heading to the finals at Forster on the last weekend in July. In the clubs Minor Pairs Championship, we are down to the final and we will be able to report on that result in the next Journal report. It is a bit of a ‘David vs Goliath’ affair, with a couple of our top end Grade 5 players, Graham Richards and Richard Hickey to play 30

David Campbell and Peter Gordon. Campbell and Gordon, from the Grade 7 pennant side, have proven to be the giant-killers thus far, and showed they won’t be any push-over in the final, after defeating Neil ‘Skull’ Cusbert and Steve Baldwin in the semi. Our weekly Friday ‘Power’ Pairs event is going from strength to strength. Now it has been opened up to men’s, ladies or mixed pairs sides, it is close to filling up most weeks. With $200 prize money and often a sizeable jackpot to be won, we are also drawing many visiting pairs to Wenty each Friday and have already gained quite a few new members via this day. A big congratulations to Richard Hickey who has been selected in the NSW Woomeras State Side. The ‘Woomeras’ are bowlers that use an artificial bowlingarm to deliver their bowl after not being physically able to bend down and deliver of their own accord. The bowling-arm has gained a lot more acceptance in the last few years and is helping hundreds of bowlers to prolong their years on the greens. The Woomeras are the best of that competitive bunch of bowlers who still have that burning desire to compete at the highest level. We wish Richard the very best when he heads interstate later this year. Cameron Curtis Bowls Coordinator

Congratulations to Tenia Clark, Montana Fonua, and Aaliyah Fasavalu who represented the successful NSW city team at the national championships with Aaliyah also signing with St George for the upcoming women’s NRL competition and Amelia Mafi who has signed with the Roosters. SWIMMING CLUB We are currently in our winter break for swimming. However, a few of our members travelled to Dubbo over the June long weekend to attend the Queens Legacy Carnival. Acquaintances were renewed on the Saturday evening get together at the Dubbo RSL with members from 13 Clubs attending including Clubs from Southport and Nerang in Queensland. On the Sunday morning we attended the swim at the newly refurbished Pool in the aquatic centre adjoining the RSL Club. There was strong competition with the winners of both the 25-metre event and 50 metre events very close to their time (but unfortunately, they were not from Wentworthville). Thereafter we attended a presentation luncheon with a Pirates of the Caribbean theme with attendees going to great lengths with their costumes. Funds raised over the weekend are donated to Dubbo Legacy who were very grateful. We wish to thank the parent Club for the donation of two vouchers for the Sunday luncheon raffle which was greatly appreciated. On 14 July, 2019 we have members attending a local swim at Blacktown Pool with Blacktown and Seven Hills Clubs. Our Summer season will be commencing on Sunday 13 October, 2019 at the Merrylands Pool located at Burnett Street, Merrylands due to the closure and refurbishment of the Wentworthville Pool. Robin Thomson President

Our Canterbury Cup side are also experiencing an up and down season thus far with 6 wins and 8 losses. Round 7 saw a close loss to Newcastle 24 – 20 but things turned around next game with a dominant 30 – 14 win over Saints at Bankwest stadium. A loss in round 10 to the Bears 34 – 20 was followed by a win over the Panthers 20 – 12. The following 3 games have resulted in consecutive losses to Souths 20 – 14, Newtown 22 – 10, and the Warriors 26 – 16 but round 15 saw a fantastic come from behind win over the more fancied Mounties 38 – 34. The Ron Massey side have continued with their extraordinary form now winning 10 games straight leaving them 4 points clear at the top of the ladder. Wins over Asquith 24 – 16, Blacktown 32 – 12, Penrith 46 – 16, Guildford 24 – 10, Mounties 42 – 0, Cabramatta 15 – 14, and Hills 31 – 6 sees the boys gaining momentum towards the back end of the season and the dream of another premiership. Congratulations to D’Rhys Miller representing Fiji and Nick Kassis representing Lebanon who faced off recently in an international, and Josh Minhinnick who represented the Cook Islands. Nick Kassis along with Piki Rogers also represented a combined NSW Ron Massey team who defeated a combined Queensland side. Good luck to all 3 teams for the remainder of the season and hopefully we will see all 3 sides playing semi – final football. All information relating to the WDRLFC including complete draws for the Harvey Norman Women’s, Ron Massey, and Intrust Super Premiership teams can be found on our website www.wentymagpies.com.au Martin De Bono Secretary
