THE JOURNAL
President’s Report Dear Members
Entering the midst of the festive season, Christmas and the new year are fast approaching and there has been many exciting developments since my last report. The improvements the club has delivered throughout the year has put Wenty Leagues in a position to continue to grow and thrive. As we near the completion of a phase of our master plan, a major milestone is the opening of our sixlevel multi-storey carpark. For your convenience, Wenty Leagues now has 780 new carparking spaces, of which 650 will be covered from the elements. Along with secure parking, the carpark also provides patrons with better access to the club. Our multi-outlet casual dining precinct, The Plaza continues to track on schedule and as you can see from the extended covers on this Journal, introduces 4 new dining outlets and a bigger and better kids play area. To reiterate our positive impact on the community, especially during this time of year, our Christmas Giving Tree stands tall in the club collecting generous donations from our patrons. These donations which will go to deserving families at Ronald McDonald House to help ensure they have a wonderful festive season. In addition to the Giving Tree, we are extending our efforts to support people in need on Christmas Day. Sadly, the busiest day of the year for Parramatta Mission’s Lifeline service is Christmas Day as it emphasises the struggle many homeless people deal with in relation to social isolation and loneliness. At Wenty Leagues we’re encouraging
THE JOURNAL
CEO’s Report everyone to help by ‘Buying a Plate for a Mate.’ Located at any of our dining point of sale outlets, you can purchase a special paper plate for $25 that will translate into a meal for a person who may be experiencing homelesness on Christmas Day. By buying a plate it will help alleviate their struggles by ensuring that they have a place to meet, socialize and enjoy a special meal on Christmas Day. For more information turn to page 7. Finally, I am pleased to announce that at this year’s Clubs & Community Awards, Wenty Leagues earned a Highly Commended entry for our Disability, Welfare & Social Inclusion initiative - Transforming Lives with Parramatta Mission. Thanks to the amazing group at Parramatta Mission and our staff for their commitment and true passion to serve others in the community. It is our combined efforts that made this commendation possible. On behalf of the Board, I would like to wish all members and their families a very Merry Christmas and happy and safe new year. I thank you all for your patience and continued support as we continue to build our master plan and work toward creating a Wenty Leagues that will support our members and community for many years to come.
Dear Members Welcome to the Christmas edition of your Wenty Journal. The master plan continues to move forward, but what has always remained at the heart of Wenty Leagues, is to be a strong contributor in the local community. This is proven time and time again by our staff’s continued efforts preparing meals for those in need for Ronald McDonald House and Parramatta Mission. In addition to these regular initiatives, Wenty Leagues partnered with The Black Dog Institute for a fifth consecutive year, to host the Calcutta Charity Dinner. Held on Monday 5 November, this event raised funds up to $50,000 to support people dealing with mental illness. Another special event back by popular demand is Carols on Ringrose. Taking place on Tuesday 18 December, join us for an evening of Christmas cheer on Ringrose Oval featuring live entertainment, rides, food trucks and a spectacular fireworks display. Bring a blanket and sing along to your favourite Christmas Carols. This event raises funds for Youth Off The Streets and I look forward to seeing the whole community coming out and getting into the Christmas spirit.
As a special treat for the kids, we’re throwing two Toy Wonderland Christmas parties filled with games, face painting and a special visit from Santa. The highlight of the parties will be a huge toy raffle with $12,000 worth of toys to be won over the two nights. Speaking of raffles, you’ll also have a chance to win over 50 mixed hampers, hams, pork and turkey roasts during our weekly Thursday and Sunday raffles. See page 8 and 9 for dates and details. It’s also time to get your appetites ready for some mouth-watering specials brought to you by our popular dining outlets. Lawsons Bistro brings us a dish in tune with the festive season offering up a Christmas Plate filled with chilled seafood delicacies from around the country. Then, following on in January is a delicious combination of beef and scampi. For the adventurous, Demolish takes us on a more unconventional culinary journey with a Turducken Burger and banana caramel pizza in December. There’s no better celebration than New Year’s Eve and Wenty Leagues is bringing the Spirit of the Islands to the Starlight Room with a hot tropical party. Tickets are selling fast so make sure you book your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Island drum beats, hula dancers and a themed three-course
meal will make you feel like you’re living it up in the South Pacific. See page 11 for more information. Lastly, the execution of the master plan is by far the biggest and most ambitious project undertaken and what lies ahead will certainly usher in a new era and continue the great legacy of Wenty Leagues. I would like to thank members and visitors for your continued patronage and patience as these works continue and I look forward to greeting you at the Club. Glenn Kovacs Chief Executive Officer

WELCOMING THE MULTI-STOREY CAR PARK PLAN YOUR VISIT
The opening of the carpark is just weeks away and it cannot come at a better time with the heat of summer upon us. Returning to a hot car will no longer be an issue as our new multi-storey carpark will not only keep your car shaded from the elements but will also be a shorter walk to the club entrance.
Are you ready to start your journey?
As we continue the construction of our Master Plan, there will be external areas of the club covered with hoarding. For guidance on how to access club facilities, please refer to signage for direction or contact our friendly Reception team on (02) 8868 9200.
Along with delivering 780 new spaces, two passenger lifts will connect all levels for added convenience. The building is extremely well lit and is monitored by CCTV to ensure the safety and security for all our members and visitors. If you’ve driven along the Great Western Highway recently, you’ve no doubt seen the exciting spectacle that is a large multi-storey magpie that features on the corner of the structure.
Building of the first part of our multi-outlet casual dining precinct, The Plaza continues to remain on schedule. The framework for the roof line has been installed which will form level 1 of the building and will connect into the new main foyer and porte-cochere. Construction for this section will be completed in 2019. For more information on the dining outlets that will make up the Plaza, please refer to the booklet attached.
Other significant features of the car park include:
We thank you for your continued patience and understanding. Please be assured that we are working tirelessly to ensure you continue to enjoy your Wenty Leagues experience. For regular updates, progress signage has been placed at the entrance of the Club or you can visit www.wentyleagues.com.au/master-plan
• Six levels of parking • Generous line distances for spaces • Significant turning room • Better traffic flow to scan for empty spaces • Undercover walkway to club entrance (to be built in 2019)

Sub Clubs CRICKET CLUB The Cricket Club is fielding 7 senior teams with 2 A grade teams (first time ever that we can remember fielding 2 teams in the top grade), B1, B3, B5, B7 and B12. Our season has started fairly well with most teams around the middle of the ladder with a couple of games having been washed out, there is plenty of time for teams to make their way up the ladder. A couple of great batting performances from James Pettitt (109 & 116), Afaan Shakeeb (110), Donald Redol (114), and Brinth Baskaran (110). Great bowling performances by Vivek Padaliya 5/39, Kartheepan Ratnadivel 5/23, Ravi Barot 3/18, and Pankaj Sachdeva 2/8. Our 13 junior teams are also mostly around the middle of the table, but there has been some spectacular bowling by Agnik Podder (5/24), Aadhav Pandidurai (4/0), Hrehan Shah (4/2), Bhavnis Jain (3/2), Aarav Bhandari, Ashane Jayapragash and Kopegann Indratheepan 2/1. While some good batting performances from Raveen Ganesh (88), Sai Dhanvi Vemulapalli (57), Shanuk Karandeniya (54) Woolworths Junior blast has also started with great enthusiasm by all participants, and excellent parental assistance and committee members running the program. We are looking to hold our 60th reunion on the 15th February at Wenty Leagues, any former players that may be interested in attending please contact the club or look at our website/Facebook site for more information to come. We will also be hosting a Pink Stumps day on 2 February 2019 at Monty Bennett, this is a scheduled 1-day match against our 2 A Grade teams, come along for a great cause.

Any player lucky enough to win eight or more games in a row on any night also receives a small prize. On the social side there are two dinners per year.
Congratulations to all our darts teams who recently finished the 2018 Winter Competition. Our Monday nights Men’s Division 1 Teams finished 1st and 3rd while our Wednesday nights Mixed Teams finished 1st and 4th. Unfortunately, Roz Atkins Monday Night Team was beaten in the Finals Playoffs as was Raewyn’s Team in the Wednesday Mixed Comp. Our Monday Night Grand Finalists, led by John Rook and Steve Gumbleton, not only won the Division one title but went to win a hard-fought Grand Final against Carousel Inn 6 to 5. A great result as the Carousel players has won this comp for several years in a row. Our Wednesday Nights mixed team went down 6 – 5 in the Grand Final but great effort to get that far. Congratulations to all Club Players for an outstanding effort this year. WENTYLEAGUES.COM.AU

New players are always welcome. You do not need to be an expert player to participate and you will find there is a range of ability amongst the players. You start with a partner and change partner after each game. Changing partners is fun. Like any endeavour, ability improves with practice. Lessons can be arranged for those unsure of how to play or who wish to improve. If you have never played, we can teach you. If it has been some 28
17/10 1st Christel Brassaud, Judy Byrnes (11), 3rd Judy & Les Bowerman, Wendy Hewitt, Cathy Hill, Col Manton, Bill Seinor (10) 24/10 1st Col Manton (13), 2nd Martin Badger, Rob Fountain, Wendy Hewitt, Herbert Roedl (10) Congratulations to the following who managed the excellent feat of winning 8 or more games in a row: John Chen (8/8), Joe Brassaud (5/9), Col Manton (26/9, 24/10), Tony Irvine (3/10). The fourth aggregate for 22 Aug to 3 Oct was won by life member jolly Judy Byrnes on 64 games, her third win of the year. There were three runners up on 58 games; Ron Betteridge, Col Levingston & Gail Reid. Special Mentions: The almost centenarian, dashing Danny Gaal, achieved the incredible feat of achieving three lone hands in the one game on 24 Oct. His partner, Dennis the menace Williams was just a lucky passenger. Don’t have to be young to be good. It may have been Joe Brassaud’s first win on 5 September, but he did it in style winning the first 12 games before running out of puff. To show it was not a fluke jolly Judy Byrnes once again ordered up with 5 trumps, went alone and got euchred. The girl’s a trier. I await the hat trick. Good to see Terry Scott in full flight after minor heart surgery. He is still his as taciturn as ever. Around the traps: Nothing to report. An interesting aside: It was the evening of 12 September when former friends, jolly Judy Byrnes and sneaky Shirley Keniry came to grips on the king table. The score was 4 all and the tension was high. Jolly dealt. Sneaky passed. Jolly picked it up. Sneaky had the greatest sit in history and absolutely smashed poor Judy who was anything but jolly. Sneaky had a grin as wide as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and smiles bigger than Satchmo’s. All I DECEMBER 18/JANUARY 19

FISHING With all the rain and rough seas of late fishing was restricted to just two trips. Others were scheduled but cancelled due to poor conditions. It was still great to get on the water after the last months cancelled trips due to the weather and rough seas. The first scheduled trip in September went ahead with a full boat. As we headed out the weather was kind, the sea calm and the fishermen were happy and looking forward to a great day of fishing. With already a reasonable catch on board, it didn’t matter that the weather turned bad late morning as we were nearing the end of the trip, but nevertheless a good time was had by all. The fish caught consisted of 22 Morwong, 4 Snapper, 5 Leather Jackets, 3 Pig Fish, 5 Flathead. The biggest bag went to R. Bakker weighing in at 5.345 kg, the biggest fish was a nice size flathead with 1.5 kg caught by A Debattista. The second scheduled September trip was cancelled due to the unsafe conditions, a mid-week trip was planned as a make-up, but it too was cancelled due to the weather. The trip in October was again a full boat, the weather started fine with winds of 18 to 20 knots. It was comfortable, however, we stayed in close where the seas were calmer. Then as the day improved headed out wide where the bigger fish are. Unfortunately, the weather changed so we headed back in close for the remainder of the trip. Overall, a good day fishing with all on board taking fish home. Some caught more than others, so we had some feeling really great with a full bag while others had just a few but that’s fishing! The fish caught consisted of, 16 Morwong, 4 Snapper, 6 Flathead, 1 Leather Jacket and 5 Pig Fish. The biggest fish, a Morwong 1.370 kg was caught by Frank Rapa and the biggest bag went to George Schembri weighing in at 4.195 kg. There are more scheduled trips in November and again in December as we head towards Christmas, and there will be more in 2019, so if you are interested please contact the fishing club representatives. Till next tide, Andrew Harvey Publicity Officer

We played our return challenge against Gosford RSL at Gosford with the bus leaving Wenty at 4.30am this being the 1st day of daylight saving with 13 dedicated golfers making the trip to Gosford. GOSHIN JU-JITSU Our ever-increasing student numbers produced another very successful year. Due to these increases, it was necessary in Term 3 to close our books for new junior student registrations in order to be beneficial to all our students. We look forward to welcoming new students in 2019 when registration reopens. Our lesson times are 6.30 - 7.25pm junior white and junior yellow belts, 7.30 - 8.30pm junior orange to junior blue belts and 8.35 - 9.45pm all senior students. The Ju-Jitsu Committee decided that the new training times allowed more Instructors to be available to teach the new students without disadvantaging our advanced students from achieving their higher belt gradings and allowed higher graded junior instructors to assist on the first mat. The senior training mat has also significantly increased in numbers.
Even more encouraging, a number of our junior students have been training on the senior mat. November saw our senior brown belt instructor, Danny Greenhalgh, attain his black belt in a gruelling and vigorous grading, attaining the rank of Shodan (first dan black belt). Danny was graded by a panel of experienced black belts who were impressed with his knowledge and dedication to learning the art of Ju-Jitsu. We are proud to have him as one of our instructors. Congratulations Danny! We would like to thank our Sensei Rick Cefai and all of the other Instructors including Trevor Simpson, Andrew Seck, Ray Bligh, Danny Greenhalgh, Stephen Lawless, & Paul Gava for volunteering their time to instruct on the mat. Many thanks also to our junior instructors, Benjamin Seck, Abbey Pierce, Rego San Rugmangadan & Jade Cefai, their assistance is greatly appreciated. It is always a difficult balance between family, work and school commitments. Thank you to our hard-working Secretary, Amanda Seck and Treasurer, Deanne Pierce, who tirelessly look after our club off mat. To all of the other Committee members, thank you for your assistance, it is much appreciated. Our very successful Presentation Day was highlighted by the presentation of our two Major Awards, the Junior Black Belt and the Senior Black Belt Trophies. The Award winners will be announced in our next report. In addition, in excess of 60 other awards were presented to very deserving students. Also, many thanks to the Wenty Leagues staff, especially the function staff, chef, catering, bar staff and all of the staff who helped to make our Presentation Day, so very successful. The Ju-Jitsu Club would also like to express our appreciation and gratitude to the Wenty Leagues Club, for their financial support and assistance over the past 51 years. On behalf of the Wenty Leagues Goshin JuJitsu Club, we would like to extend our good wishes to everyone for a very Merry Christmas and a very safe and happy New Year. For all enquiries please email wlcgoshinjujitsu@gmail.com Amanda Seck Secretary

Ladies, you should be proud. We need to say a big thank you to our committee for all their great organisation and hard work.
At last report the team were moving into the 1st Round of the Semi Finals Series playing the well performed St Marys. After staring slowly at the half time break St Marys led 12-4 but circumstances changed in the second half with Wenty running in 22 unanswered points to win clearly 26-12.

We will have Appreciation Day on 15 November, and 22 November we have a combined Pink Day, Friendship Day and Andy’s Trophy Day all together as we are still under renovations. Nathan Cayless has accepted a position with the Warriors NRL Club and Wenty appreciate his involvement over the past 2 ½ years and wish him all the best in his future endeavours. WDRLFC have been advised by Parramatta that as from season 2020 they will reclaim the ISP team and play under the Parramatta brand. The Agreement for 2019 will be honoured making 12 years of the Joint Venture, but unless our Club can come to an agreement with another NRL Club

A week off didn’t appear to help with the continuity of the good football being played and the next opponents in in the Preliminary Final were to be the ever-improving Glebe Burwood. Although starting well and building up a 16-0 lead Glebe hit back and were in front and looking likely winners at 22-18 inside the last 2 minutes before Blake Cook dived over from dummy half to score adjacent to the uprights and with the conversion Wenty secured a somewhat fortunate win and were going to the Grand Final. The GF against St Marys was setting up as an intriguing and expectantly tough game. The 1st 20 minutes was hard fought with scoring hard to come by, but as the game went on Wenty started to assume control and in a standout, performance won 38-4 thus defending the title won last season giving Wenty our 6th Massey Cup title in the last 10 years. A truly great performance. Congratulations to Brett Cook and his marvellous tea. We now look to season 2019 and a defence again of the Premiership. HARVEY NORMAN WOMEN’S LEAGUE The venture into the Women’s League was always going to be a learning curve and a tough season. Coach Mark Wildman is looking forward to the challenge of the second year and with lessons gained from season 2018 is building the playing squad and is expecting big improvements. We wish mark all the best. PRESENTATION NIGHT The WDRLFC Presentation Night was held on the 27th September 2018 with the largest attendance ever. A good night was had by all. Wenty home games and a Wenty cap which in itself is great value. After 12 Rounds Brett Cook’s team was sitting on top of the ladder 3 points clear of the 2nd placed team. The good run of form continued in Round 13 with a (40-6) win over Cabramatta, (26-6) win over Guildford and a (64-10) demolition of Penrith Brothers taking the winning streak to 11 on the trot. The winning run faltered slightly with a 12 all draw against a strong Mounties side and Round 18 saw a return to the winner’s circle with a (28-10) win against Asquith. A slight hiccup in Round 19 when the team suffered a loss to Blacktown (30-28) in a high-class game. In a tight contest a (25-10) win against BurwoodGlebe closed off the Competition rounds with a Minor Premiership 3 points clear of the nearest rival. The weekend of 1 September saw the commencement of the Semi Finals Series. Wenty are drawn to play a very good St Marys team in what should be a quality game of Rugby League. Brett Cook will be driving his team to continue the recent form and continuing the momentum for the remainder of the season. Results of Final Series next issue.
HARVEY NORMAN WOMEN’S LEAGUE The venture into the Women’s League was always going to be a learning curve and a tough season was expected with most of the girls lacking the experience of the more established Clubs. Although failing to win a game, the girls never gave up and have enjoyed the involvement and have played the game with great spirit. They would have learnt valuable lessons as they came up against players that were Jillaroos and NSW Representative players which has been a valuable experience. Coach, Mark Wildman is looking forward to the challenge of the second year and with lessons gained from this season is expecting big improvements.
