President’s Report Dear Members The festive season is upon us and there have been many exciting developments since my last report. I’m proud to announce that a few more major milestones of the Club’s 50+ year history will be reached by the end of this year. The first will be the opening of premium car parking spaces directly in front of the club which will provide access to a new, modern and spacious entry foyer. Second will be the launch of our much-anticipated, premium steak and seafood restaurant, CHAR. Providing an elevated dining experience through an a la carte service, CHAR will have a 200-seat capacity offering a premium selection of steak and seafood. It will also feature a private dining area where customers can enjoy a specialised menu prepared by our newly recruited Chef de Cuisine, Serkan Tamcelik. Serkan has honed these skills working in some of Australia’s top kitchens with some of Australia’s best chefs and you can read more about him on page 7.
Once again, to reiterate our positive impact in the community, especially during this time of year, our Christmas Gift Donation Box is now in the club collecting generous donations from our patrons. These donations will go to deserving families at Ronald McDonald House to help ensure they have a wonderful festive season. In addition, we are extending our efforts to support people in need on Christmas Day. Sadly, the busiest day of the year for Parramatta Mission’s Lifeline service is Christmas Day as it emphasises the struggle many homeless people deal with in relation to social isolation and loneliness. At Wenty Leagues we’re encouraging everyone to help by ‘Buying a Plate for a Mate.’ Located at any of our point of sale outlets, you can donate $25 that will translate into a meal. By buying them a plate it will help alleviate their struggles by ensuring that they have a place to meet, socialize and enjoy a special meal on Christmas Day.
For more information turn to page 9. On behalf of the Board, I would like to wish all members and their families a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year. I thank you all for your patience and continued patronage. Ian McCann President
Leagues Club Australia Service Awards At the Annual Leagues Club Australia Conference, Director Adam Cromack and CEO Glenn Kovacs were recognised for their 15+ years of service to the association and Wenty Leagues. Adam took his place on the Board of Wenty Leagues at the age of 28, serving in both Director and Vice-President positions for the past 15 years. Adam is an active member of Wenty Leagues and is regularly seen at Ringrose Oval during the footy season cheering on the teams and he often attends weekly roll ups with the bowlers. Congratulations to Adam. Glenn’s journey is rare and incredibly inspirational. Glenn commenced his employment at Wenty Leagues back in 1996 (23 years ago). Glenn started as a Floor Attendant and has worked his way to Chief Executive Officer. Glenn is highly regarded at the Club by our staff, patrons and external club community. It is not uncommon for Glenn to make time to say hello to his fellow colleagues and customers. Glenn also regularly volunteers at Ronald McDonald House and Parramatta Mission, leading by example with giving back to the community. Congratulations Glenn.

CEO’s Report Dear Members Welcome to the Christmas edition of your Wenty Journal. As the Master Plan continues to achieve some exciting milestones, what has always remained at the heart of Wenty Leagues is to be a strong contributor in the local community. To reiterate our positive impact, especially during this time of year, our Christmas Gift Donation Box is now in the club collecting generous donations from our patrons. These donations will go towards helping families with seriously-ill children at Ronald McDonald House to help ensure they have a wonderful festive season. A special event which has become an exciting feature at the end of each year is Carols on Ringrose. Taking place on Tuesday 17 December, join us for an evening of Christmas cheer on Ringrose Oval featuring live entertainment, rides, food trucks and a spectacular fireworks display. Along with being an entertaining family event, funds are also raised for Youth Off The Streets to support their ongoing community initiatives. I look forward to seeing the whole community
coming out and getting into the Christmas spirit. Starting in December, Santa will be making his appearance at the club every week until Christmas Eve. Join us for photos, storytime and candy canes along with Mrs Claus and Santa’s Little Helper. As a special treat for the kids, we’re also throwing two Santa’s Wonderland Christmas parties in the Starlight Room. The highlight of the parties will be a huge toy raffle with $6,000 worth of toys to be won on each night. Speaking of raffles, you’ll also have a chance to win a Christmas roast during our weekly Thursday and Sunday raffles. See page 10 and 11 for dates and details. There’s no better celebration than New Year’s Eve and Wenty Leagues is bringing a night packed with the biggest hits from two of the best decades. New Year’s Eve, 70s vs 80s will be a retro themed party that will make you feel like you’re reliving some of the best eras in history. Tickets are selling fast so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment. Also included is a three-course meal, drinks package, a 6-piece band, video DJ and countdown the fireworks on the big screen. See page 13 for more information.
New Year. I also take this opportunity to thank the Board, Management and staff for their ongoing support and efforts throughout 2019. I look forward to greeting you at the Club. Glenn Kovacs Chief Executive Officer

CHAR - CHEFS PROFILE
Meet the Chef
Introducing our new Chef de Cuisine who will soon be taking you on an elevated dining experience in CHAR
Chef, Serkan Tamcelik has the gift for preparing delicious meals with the simplest ingredients. However, what sets him apart from his peers, is that he pours his heart and soul into every aspect of the cooking process. His jovial nature and level of enthusiasm can be seen in every dish he creates. Essentially, Serkan’s cooking comes from a place of love, dedication and passion for food. Being of Turkish origin, Serkan is a master of blending Mediterranean flavours to create dishes which appeal to a wide audience. While quality product sourced from top suppliers plays a crucial role, knowing when and how to add a bit of spice or seasoning is the key to elevating the dish and putting it in a league of its own. Serkan has honed these skills working in some of Australia’s top kitchens with some of Australia’s best chefs. Originally beginning his career at Wenty Leagues, Serkan moved on to work in Neil Perry’s Rockpool Bar & Grill followed by the 3 hatted Pier. He has been a stagier at restaurants Attica, Brae and Sixpenny then, through his continued drive and hard work, became a senior chef at the famous Quay Restaurant in Sydney. While there he achieved nationwide recognition by being named in the Appetite for Excellence 2019 Young Chef National Finalist. Now back at Wenty Leagues, the whole food and beverage team is thrilled to collaborate with him again. When asked what Serkan is going to bring to CHAR, Wenty Leagues Executive Chef, Colin Yabsley says, “he’s going to bring a passion for food that is second to none! Serkan has a big heart, and his ultimate satisfaction comes from preparing and sharing food with not only his family and friends, but also his valued customers.” We are excited for Chef Serkan to showcase his talents at CHAR to help bring a dining experience never before seen at Wenty Leagues.

Congratulations to the team at MATE, who were just announced as
the winners of the Wenty Leagues Outstanding Employer of Choice Award. MATE define themselves as the polar opposite of a giant, faceless telecommunications company. In fact, for MATE, family means everything. This strong focus on family has driven MATE’s consistently local, Australian focused, customer service-centred business decisions throughout all their business operations. Congratulations once more to the team at MATE for going beyond industry standards and for winning the Wenty Leagues Outstanding Employer of Choice Award!

and good luck to all teams in the finals.
The season is well underway and many teams are in the top four places with A Grade White leading the charge in first place in their division. Most of the senior teams are well placed with only B3, B8, B12 and B15 outside the top four. Some excellent performances from the first round were:
A great day was had by all at the recent interclub Friendship Day event between Wentworthville Leagues club and Smithfield RSL darts players. Once again, Smithfield RSL was successful, defeating the Wentworthville team by 19 points to 14. There were some great darts and especially finishes to some of the games. Highest ladies score was Sue Whittaker from Wenty who hit a great 158. Highest men’s score was Mark Luckwell from Smithfield with a 159. Highest finishes came from Wenty’s Mabel Elliot with a great 127, while highest peg from Smithfield was an 84 from Henare Jenkins. Looking forward to next year’s event so that Wentworthville can overturn those results.
Puri - A grade - 229 Furkhan Wahqb - B2 - 63no Siva Prasad - B11 – 120 Sutharshan S - B12 - 102 Of our junior teams, U14/1 White and U13/1 White are placed in the top four, but it is early in the season and teams are still finding their way regarding batting, bowling and working together as a coherent unit. Some good performances from the first round were: Dhurv - U16 - 89 Hrehan Shah - U13 - 58 On 7 October, we had our Junior 7 a side club day which was a great success. Lots of photos and more information can be found on our Faceboook page (Wenty Leagues Cricket Club). And, as a further move into the world of technology and keeping members and players updated with the latest news, Louise has begun a newsletter on Teamapp called the Magpie News. Thanks Louise The Junior Blast has been well attended with over 100 children taking part for the last two weeks. Junior Blast is a great program run by Cricket NSW teaching children from the age of 5 the basics of batting, bowling, catching and fielding in a fun environment. Thanks to the committee members who are able to attend and assist the next generation of young cricketers. We are currently gearing up for our Pink Stumps Day on November 23 to raise money for the McGrath Foundation, a fantastic charity supporting breast cancer sufferers. Obviously Wenty Leagues is the club everyone wants to be part of, because nearly 3 months after closing our registrations, we are still fielding calls from parents wanting to place their children in a team. Unfortunately, our 20 junior teams (including U10s) are completely full and the massive growth in junior teams has meant Gavin is working almost a second full time job keeping everything under control! Great work Gavin. Good luck to all our teams for the next few months. Juanita Di Angelo Club Secretary
DART CLUB Congratulations to all our teams, who have performed very well once again in the Sydney Western Suburbs winter darts competition. Our No 2 team won the Division 1 competition and are headed for the final playoffs over the next weeks as is our Wednesday nights Mixed team who also won their division. Our Monday night division 2 team also qualified for the playoffs with a third place in their division while our other mixed team in division 2 missed the qualifying stage. Great effort from all players WENTYLEAGUES.COM.AU
Our recent Club Championship mixed doubles event attracted a good field of players. Winners were Michele Blommestein and Andrew Milne who beat runners up Josephine Nobbs and Andriy Chirnysh. Friday night social darts are going from strength to strength so why not come down to the Magpie bar for a game. All players, no matter what experience you may have at darts are welcome. Names in by 8.00pm, entry only four dollars David Harrison President
DOMINOES The Dominoes Club plays each Thursday at 7.30pm in the Magpie area. It costs $3 to play and registration is required by 7.15pm as it takes 15 minutes to organize the game. There is a draw for partners each night. The games are played over 5 sets and the set is completed when one team has won 5 games. Whoever wins the most games on the night is the winner. In the case of ties the winner is whoever lost the least games. If still no outright winner there is a countback from the fifth set. There are annual championships and the Dominoes Club puts on a dinner for the presentation to the various championship winners. There are championships for men’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles, men’s singles and women’s singles. The game is block dominoes and is easy to play but there is strategy and skill involved. Any member of the Leagues Club is eligible to play. Come along and have a game. It is very easy to learn the basics. Prizes each night are $20 first, $10 second and $5 third. Most games involve two pairs competing against each other. If the total number of players is odd, and there are a lot of odd players, there may be a singles game. There will be a lot of dabba dabba dos as Winston Tattersall is back from Pommieland. In the last journal we reported of the passing of Alan Alderman. We received the following lovely card from Alan’s wife and family – “Dear members of the Dominos club. Alan was a source of great joy in our lives and we will miss his fun-loving nature and keen sense of humour. Thank you for honouring him in such a sincere & heart felt manner. We greatly appreciate your loving tribute. With warmest regards Denise and family” 29
We are very appreciative for receiving the card and Alan’s family’s loss is felt by members of the Wenty Dominoes club. Again, he will be missed. The Dominoes club would be richer if we had more members like Alan. Runners up were Guy Autrey and Sylvio Adrian. The Women’s Doubles Championship was won by Sharon Caine and Theresa Toomey (opposite ends of the age spectrum here). Runners up were Gloria Bugden and Joan Lowery (wrong end of the age spectrum here). The Men’s Singles was won by Robbie Chaperon and the runner up was Robert Garden. Sub Clubs best annual aggregate over forty-two weeks. Any player lucky enough to win eight or more games in a row on any night also receives a small prize. On the social side there is a Christmas dinner. New players are always welcome. You do not need to be an expert player to participate and you will find there is a range of ability amongst the players. You start with a partner and change partner after each game. Changing partners is fun. Like any endeavour, ability improves with practice. Lessons can be arranged for those unsure of how to play or who wish to improve. If you have never played, we can teach you. If it has been some time since you played we can arrange a refresher session. The fifth aggregate for 2019 was won by Ron Betteridge and Fran Boxall who tied on 57 points. Welcome back Alex Gyori who played 18 September for the first time this year. Christel and Joe Brasaud returned 2 October from overseas. Welcome to new players Chris and Paul Farrugia on 25 September. Let’s hope husband and wife enjoy playing euchre at Wenty. Steve Knapik also played for the first time on 25 September. Welcome Steve and hope we are not too fast for you. Danny Gaal took ill on 2 October and was taken to hospital. He has since been discharged and hope to see him back playing cards. The interclub team had a disappointing competition losing 10 out of 18 matches and finishing in seventh position. FISHING We were able to reschedule one of our cancelled trips to mid-week in late August. As always excited and eager fishermen all biting at the bit to get among the big fish and bring home a decent
WENTYLEAGUES.COM.AU
bag full. It wasn’t to disappoint a huge haul was achieved, consisted of: 80 Morwong and a few other species, flathead and pig fish. The biggest fish a Morwong weighing in at 1.75kg, caught by a new member of the club Manny Buhagiar, well done Manny, wasn’t he excited. As a mid-week trip there were no points allocated for the catch other than the excitement itself and self-pride. The weather was perfect, calm seas with a low to almost non-existent swell. The boat captain, Rodney, was able to take us to an area where it was expected the fish would be this time of year, he was spot on! The next scheduled trip in September went ahead. Again, the weather was kind, a little swell and the wind picked up but not before a reasonable catch was made, consisting of: •
19 Morwong
•
17 Snapper
•
6 Leather jacket
•
7 Pig Fish
We were able fish in 45 to 60 fathoms which definitely assisted in the catch. The biggest bag went to George Schembri with 9.1 kg and the biggest fish also went to George Schembri with a Snapper weighing in at 1.65 kg, a good eating fish and one that puts up a reasonable fight, well done George. Trips are scheduled for October through to the end of the year. We also have our second small boats weekend scheduled in November. A list of the pending fishing trips is in the gaming area for all to see. Trips for next year are being planned now with bookings and confirmation of dates to be available soon and they will be posted in the gaming area. If you are interested in joining the fishing club or would just like to know more please contact a committee member. Monthly meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month commencing 6:30pm. Till next tide Phil Nash Publicity Officer
GOLF Our Clubman of the Year looks like it’s between 2 players namely Nathan Cook Leading on 178pts from Ryan Payne on 175pts with daylight 3rd and only 10 weeks to go. The C.O.W. semi-finals were played which is an open event off handicap with Jim Clarke beating Lisa Jade 4 and 3 while Frank Soballa defeated Rei Reihana 2 up, with the final to be played at Liverpool on the 22/12/2019. The over 50’s golf cup was won by Frank Soballa who had to produce his license to prove he was over 50. Good to see new members Charlie Vella, Matt Simmonds, Rob Lavery, Dan Pulo playing golf with the Golf club. Guzzler cup winners lately have been Jim Clarke, Frank Soballa, Tosca Lipovic, Brian Thow, Nathan Cook, and Ryan Payne. Tosca has enjoyed the highs and lows of golf lately with the high being 48 stableford pts and the low being joining the air swing club. GOSHIN JU-JITSU Our ever-increasing student numbers produced another very successful year. Due to these increases, it was necessary to close our books for new junior student registrations in order to be beneficial to all our students. This way, more Instructors were available to teach the newer students without disadvantaging our more advanced students from achieving their higher belt gradings and allowed higher graded junior instructors to assist on the first mat. The senior training mat has also significantly increased in numbers. Even more encouraging, a number of our junior students have been training on the senior mat. We look forward to welcoming new students in 2020 when registration re-opens. This year, we welcomed Shichidan Gary Davis (7th Dan) as one of our instructors. Gary brings with him a wealth of knowledge and a fresh perspective of Ju-Jitsu. In March, our very own Trevor Simpson - OAM attained the rank of Shichidan (7th Dan black belt). Trevor began learning Ju-Jitsu in 1956 and founded our club in 1967. We would like to thank our Sensei Rick Cefai and all of the other instructors including Trevor Simpson, Gary Davis, Andrew Seck, Ray Bligh, Danny Greenhalgh, Peter Thomas, Peter Mead, Stephen Lawless, & Paul Gava for volunteering their time to instruct on the mat. Many thanks also to our junior instructors, Benjamin Seck, Rego San Rugmangadan & Jade Cefai, their assistance is greatly appreciated. It is always a difficult balance between family, work and school commitments. Thank you to our hard-working Secretary, Amanda Seck and Treasurer, Deanne Pierce, who tirelessly look after our club off mat. To all of the other Committee members, thank you for your assistance, it is much appreciated. Our very successful Presentation Day was highlighted by the presentation of our two Major Awards, the Junior Black Belt and the Senior Black Belt Trophies. The Award winners will be announced in our next report. In addition, in excess of 70 other awards were presented to very deserving students. Also, many thanks to the Wenty Leagues staff, especially the function staff, chef, catering, bar staff and all of the staff who helped to make our Presentation Day, so very successful. The Ju-Jitsu Club would also like to express our appreciation and gratitude to the Wenty Leagues Club, for their financial support and assistance over the past 52 years.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to all our teams, coaches, managers and Committee.
In recent months we had several of our members win the Zone titles and go off to the State Championships. We had Jeff Gallagher in the Over 60s Senior Singles, along with the State Senior Pairs, with Mark ‘Scruffy’ Barton. We also, had Mark Barton team up with our own Bowls Coordinator, Cameron Curtis, in the Champion of Champion Pairs at Tamworth. All combinations did exceptionally well winning multiple games in their respective sections, before getting beaten on a count-back. Particularly, for Jeff and Mark in the Senior State Pairs who finished with two wins plus a draw (didn’t lose a game in their section), but lost out on for and against! Wasn’t to be this year, but we are continually knocking on the door for future state title success. Bowls Secretary, Jeff Gallagher, was rewarded for his great year by being selected in the Bowls NSW Senior State side. They will be playing at Ettalong on the Central Coast late October in the National Senior Round Robin. We wish Jeff and all his NSW team mates best wishes for a successful campaign. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS The Clubs is down to the final at the time of writing. Peter McGill, Mohan Lal, Troy Rodgers vs John French, Steve Baldwin, Shane Clarke. Sub Clubs SQUASH CLUB With four rounds to go we have 4 teams in competitive positions to make the semi-finals which will take place on 18 November. 2 more teams are sitting just outside the semi-final positions so a strong finish from these teams could see the number of teams qualifying for the semifinals increase to 6. The junior development program wrapped up on 29 September after a 9 week course that was held at the Northmead squash court complex. The program averaged 7 participants per week and was enjoyed by all the participants who attended. The Executive will review the program at our next meeting. The Australian Masters tournament was recently held on the Gold Coast with a large number of participants from across the county entering into the various age group divisions. Our club champion Peter Bastow won his division and then paired with other NSW players to finish second in the state v state division. Joy Connolly, Rob Spooner and Kate Totaro were undefeated winners in their respective divisions. Overall this was a great result for members of the Wenty Leagues Squash Club. Following the Australian Masters Peter Bastow went to New Zealand to represent Australia in the Trans Tasman Masters 3 test series at Timaru. Peter was then staying to participate in the New Zealand Masters tournament the following week. We will let you know how Peter fared in the next journal report. SWIMMING CLUB On Sunday, 13 October we commended our 2019-2020 season at Merrylands Pool which will be our temporary base while Wenty Pool is being refurbished. We had 20 members in attendance on a bleak windy morning. As was to be expected, times were not very fast, but, this will begin to improve as we progress into the new season. It was a pleasant surprise to have our President, Robin Thomson, swimming on the opening day, as she usually waits 2-3 weeks before testing the water. The only problem was trying to get her to leave the heated 27.5-degree pool into the 13-degree wind between races. Any member of Wenty Leagues who enjoys a swim is encouraged to join us on Sunday mornings at 7.45am. We have events for all strokes and levels of ability. We are a happy crowd who would be sure to make newcomers feel most welcome, so come along for a dip with coffee and bickies to follow. John McCann Publicity Officer

Starting with our women’s team in the HNWP competition they completed the season with hard fought and exciting win over Wests Tigers 18 – 10 which qualified them for week 1 of the semifinals, an outstanding effort considering they didn’t win a game last year and an achievement that all players and coaching staff should be extremely proud of. The following weekend they met the West Tigers once again in an elimination semi but unfortunately the girls couldn’t repeat their heroics from the week before going down 28 – 12 but still a great effort from all involved. Continuing from the previous journal and our Canterbury Cup side continued with their up and down season with wins in rounds 16 and 17 over Blacktown and Wests 22 – 16 and 26 – 20. Three straight losses over the next 3 rounds put the boys onto the back foot but they fought back with crucial wins to complete the season proper over Blacktown 46 – 28, the second placed Bulldogs 28 – 20, then the competition leaders Rabbitohs 26 – 16 to qualify for semi-final football in 8th place. Week 1 of the finals and a sudden death assignment against the formidable Panthers, and the Wentworthville Magpies are really starting to show their ability, running out victors in emphatic style 34 – 16. We are now off to Leichhardt for weeks 2 of the semis against a strong Bulldogs outfit but Wenty keep the dream alive with a gutsy 26 – 20 win. It’s preliminary final time versus South Sydney and in a flawless display the mighty magpies ran out convincing winners 35 – 10 to book a spot in the Canterbury Cup grand final against Newtown in a repeat of 2008 where Wenty won a 104 minute thriller 12 – 8. Off to Bankwest we go and in a highly entertaining game of football Wenty were leading 14 – 12 with 2 minutes left in normal time but a controversial penalty against the magpies sent the game into extra time. Wenty struck early with a field goal to Jaeman Salmon but unfortunately history wasn’t about to repeat itself with Newtown scoring a 32
converted try in the dying moments to secure a 20 – 15 victory. A heartbreaking way to lose a grand final but a huge effort from Rip Taylor and his crew to reach the big dance. The Ron Massey crew continue on their march to defending their title with 6 wins and 2 losses in the lead up to the semi-finals. Round 16 was a loss to St.Mary’s but the followed by 6 straight wins over Glebe 52 – 10, Wests 26 – 16, Asquith 21 – 16, Blacktown 30 – 24, Penrith 64 – 4, and finally Guildford 36 – 10. Unfortunately the team suffered a loss in the final round to Mounties but had done enough to finish on top of the competition and secure the minor premiership. Week 1 of the semi-finals and the Ron Massey boys bounced back to form with a convincing 38 – 4 win over the 4th placed Asquith and thus earning this weekend off. Week 3 of the semi finals Wenty are up against Mounties who defeated our Ron Massey boys only 4 weeks earlier but the magpies dug in deep and in a hard and tough encounter ran out victors 22 – 12 to book a place in their 3rd consecutive grand final against last years opponents St.Mary’s. Leichhardt was the scene of last years game as it is again this year and in a very tight and hard fought game of football Wenty were once again crowned premiers 32 – 14. Congratulations to Brett Cook and all his staff and to all the players on winning yet another premiership. With a culmination of the great results from HNWL, Ron Massey, and Canterbury Cup squads Wentworthville won the highly prestigious NSWRL Club Championship for 2019.
