CEO’s Report
Dear Members
Dear Members
Welcome to 2019 and it’s going to be another exciting and eventful year at Wenty Leagues. As the holiday and festive season officially winds up, I’d like to take a moment to highlight the results of the community initiatives Wenty Leagues launched towards the latter part of the year. Assisting droughtstricken farmers, the Buy a Bale campaign raised funds to purchase 26 large bales of hay to help keep farmer’s livestock alive during the drought. During the Christmas season we launched the Buy a Plate for a Mate initiative, encouraging donations to buy a meal for those experiencing homelessness on Christmas day. The total amount raised was $3,125 which contributed to 125 meals served at a special Christmas lunch at Parramatta Mission. The Wenty Leagues team including CEO, Glenn Kovacs and Director Rob Willis also volunteered their time on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to help with the preparation.
The Wenty Leagues Christmas Giving Tree highlighted the generosity of our members as we saw well over 500 brand new toys collected and donated to families with seriously ill children at Ronald McDonald House. Finally, to close the year on a high note, the second Carols on Ringrose event grew to another level attracting well over 2,000 people who came together to sing Christmas Carols and enjoy a spectacular fireworks display on Ringrose Oval. This event raised a total of $12,500 which went towards supporting Youth Off The Streets initiatives to help at-risk youths in our community. I am happy to report that our six-level multideck carpark, bringing 780 new spaces, is now open. Additionally, February will mark another milestone as we unveil Wenty Leagues’ new food and beverage casual dining and entertainment precinct, The Plaza. With seating for up to 850 people, this area will feature three brand new dining outlets – Chefs Grill, Pizza Mama and Crave Desserts. Furthermore, it will include a new and improved Kids Play Area complete with an air-conditioned, adventure indoor playground with an enormous play structure plus separate movie rooms and two themed party rooms available for hire. Read more about The Plaza from page 6.
Welcome to the new year. It was great to see the Club full of cheer during the holiday season and it was a pleasure to welcome the many families and friends who shared their Christmas time at Wenty Leagues.
Lastly, on behalf of the Board, I would like to thank you all for your generosity and ongoing support of Wenty Leagues’ community initiatives. As the Master Plan continues, I’d also like to thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we work towards creating a bigger and better Wenty Leagues for our members and their guests.
Always the busiest part of the year, we hosted an assortment of events and activities throughout the Club including a special Christmas Dinner to recognise and show appreciation for community volunteers from Parramatta Mission, Youth Off The Streets and Ronald McDonald House. Moreover, As Ian mentioned in his report, the culmination was our Carols on Ringrose event which enjoyed a huge turnout from the local community for an evening of live entertainment, rides, food trucks and a spectacular fireworks display.
We look forward to building on these highlights with the official opening of The Plaza later this month. To see the exciting dishes we have in store and for the latest news and updates, search ‘The Plaza at Wenty Leagues’ on Facebook and Instagram. Wenty Leagues is the destination for great entertainment as we bring you acclaimed performing artists live in the Starlight Room. Headlining in February will be The Robertson Brothers Variety Show and direct from Las Vegas, Manpower Australia. For the kids in March, we’re bringing the world’s most popular children’s entertainment group, The Wiggles and later in the same month renowned soap star, Ronn Moss will stop by on his 2019 Australian Tour. There are plenty more great shows in the line-up – see from page 16 for more details. As we continue onto the next stage of the Master Plan, we have worked hard to ensure there will be minimal disruption on your experience at Wenty Leagues. Due to some areas being covered with hoarding during construction, please consult directional signage for guidance on how to access Club facilities.
Thanks to all our members and visitors for your continued patronage and patience as these works continue and I look forward to greeting you at the Club. Glenn Kovacs Chief Executive Officer

CAROLS ON RINGROSE RAISES MUCH NEEDED FUNDS FOR AT-RISK YOUTH In celebration of the festive season Wenty Leagues invited all to the 2019 Carols on Ringrose event. The evening began with a warm welcome from Youth Off The Streets Ambassador Fr. Chris Riley, followed by an array of talented entertainers including Youth Singers, Christmas Groove, Uptown Funk and Bustamove Dance School. This year the Club was excited to have country music singer/songwriter and Golden Guitar Award Winner Amber Lawrence performing along with Winner of The Voice 2017, Judah Kelly. The rides were exciting, the food was superb and to cap off the night, everyone was treated to a stunning fireworks display. The event raised $12,500 to support Youth Off The Streets. CREATING A BRIGHTER CHRISTMAS FOR FAMILIES WITH SERIOUSLY ILL CHILDREN
A SPECIAL LUNCH FOR THOSE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS ON CHRISTMAS DAY
The Ronald McDonald House in Westmead lends a helping hand to families with seriously ill children in times of hardship by delivering emotional support, assistance and above all, providing a sense of togetherness. At the beginning of the festive season Wenty Leagues reached out to Ronald McDonald House, Westmead to launch the Giving Tree Christmas Initiative.
Christmas is a time of giving and sharing, a time to come together and celebrate over a joyous and festive lunch or dinner. To help bring Christmas cheer, Wenty Leagues partnered with Parramatta Mission for the ‘Buy a Plate for a Mate’ campaign. The initiative reached out to all, encouraging everyone to lend a compassionate helping hand and donate $25 and this would translate to a meal for those experiencing homelessness on Christmas Day. In addition, The Wenty Leagues team including CEO, Glenn Kovacs and Director Rob Willis, volunteered their time on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to help prepare and serve the meals at Parramatta Mission.
The response was astounding, and it is wonderful to think that the Club welcomes such generous and compassionate members. On 18 December the community room at Ronald McDonald House Westmead was transformed into a festive and joyous Christmas Cave. All donated gifts were placed around the room and residents were given the opportunity to select a gift or two to assist in celebrations on Christmas Day.
Wenty Leagues’ Annual Sport Awards evening was held on Sunday, 3 December, an event which recognised the efforts of individuals, teams, clubs and volunteers involved with Wenty Leagues sport. This year’s event was hosted by Anthony Maroon. The special guest speaker of the night was Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist and World Young Player of the Year in Field Hockey 2013, Anna Flanagan. Congratulations to all the winners for 2018:
“It’s wonderful to be able to see exactly how these donations positively impact the lives of people who are struggling with homelessness. Thank you to everyone who donated,”

WILD OATS CHARDONNAY This wine is crafted in a modern style – full bodied yet crisp, with lifted citrus and melon flavours. The oak supports the flavours and does not dominate. WILD OATS SAUVIGNON BLANC The sauvignon blanc is a pale lemon colour. With herbaceous and faint citrus aromas, followed by tropical fruit and passionfruit on the palate. A clean and crisp finished with a hint on lemony acidic essence. WILD OATS CABERNET MERLOT The aim with this blend of two grape varieties was to produce a wine with both structure and personality. Cabernet ’s generous black currant and mulberry red fruit characters jump to the fore, with smooth tannins and gentle French oak influence. Will certainly age ‘will if you wish but drinks very well right now. WILD OATS SHIRAZ Wild Oats Shiraz is a supple, rounded Shiraz with appealing plummy fruits and a touch of spice. DOMINOES Our Presentation Night was held on 15th November and was enjoyed by all who attended. The buffet dinner was excellent.
Saturdays
For the first time ever Wenty Leagues fielded 3 teams in the IDCA Presidents Cup, those being the U15s, U12s and the U10s. Considering it was only a couple of weeks from selecting teams to trials and then games, the teams have done well, drawing on players from other clubs as well as showing great skill and agility.
Sundays
Our teams were competing against previously established teams and as a result it took a while to settle into playing together. However, it was a very rewarding experience and helped advance their cricket skills. Thanks to the Committee members who worked so efficiently to get these teams up and running. We had our second team travel to Sri Lanka to play local Sri Lankan teams and a great time was had by all. The planning process has begun for next year’s tour.

The annual Cricket Gala Day was held on the 20th of December with 3 games being played between U14-16, Seniors and U12-13. Everyone who participated had a great day. We are holding our 60th Anniversary reunion on the 15 February 2019 at the club, it will be great to see many former players in attendance. The 2018 cricket season is starting to wrap up with both senior and junior teams placing in the middle of the table, except for the U13s 1 and 2, and the U12s who are either placing first or second. We hope to be able to report a few premierships in the next journal.

Everyone had a great time and the event was won by Kim Rousell and John Rook, with Donna Carthy and Steve Gumbleton coming in as runners up. The presentation night was also well attended with some great trophies won. I would like to thank the catering staff who did a fantastic job, providing us with great food and service. EUCHRE The Wenty Leagues Euchre Club plays each Wednesday near the TAB whilst the renovations are in progress, commencing at 7pm. Sixteen games are played with a break after the 8th and cash prizes and club vouchers can be won for those placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd. It costs $3 to play each night plus a $3 annual membership fee. There are prizes for the best aggregate each seven weeks with six aggregates per year. There is also a prize for the best annual aggregate over forty-two weeks. Any player lucky enough to win eight or more games in a row on any night also receives a small prize. On the social side there are two dinners per year. New players are always welcome. You do not need to be an expert player to participate and you will find that there is a range of ability amongst all players. You start with a partner and change partners after each game. Changing partners is fun. Like any endeavour, ability improves with practice and lessons can be arranged for those unsure of how to play or who wish to improve. If it has been some time since you have played euchre we can also arrange a refresher session. Results since the last journal are as follows (winning games in brackets): 31/10 1st Judy Byrnes (11) 2nd Martin Badger, Fran Boxall, Charlie Grech, Col Manton (10) 7/11 1st Eliazara Bob (12) 2nd Martin Badger, Fran Boxall (11) 14/11 1st Fran Boxall (15) 2nd Gail Reid (11) 3rd Ron Betteridge, Judy Bowerman, Christel Brassaud, Joe Brassaud, Hertha Roedl, Bill Seinor (10) 21/11 1st Herbert Roedl (13) 2nd Betty Kay, Carol Scott (11) 28/11 1st Judy Bowerman (12) 2nd Judy Byrnes (11) 3rd Les Bowerman, Mitch Paterson (10) 5/12 1st Judy Byrnes, Cathy Hill (11) 3rd Judy Bowerman, Fran Boxall, Tony Irvine, Col Levingston (10) 12/12 1st Betty Kay (12) 2nd Shirley, Keniry, Col Levingston, Gail Reid, Bill Seinor (11) 19/12 1st Ron Betteridge 2nd Maria Cairns, Hertha Roedl (12)

PROMOTION SUB CLUBS
3rd of October was won by the jolly life member Judy Byrnes on 64 games, her third win of the year. There were three runners up on 58 games; Ron Betteridge, Col Levingston and Gail Reid. The sixth aggregate from the 10th of October to the 21st of November was shared by Judy Byrnes and another life member Fran Boxall, with 60 games. It was no surprise that Judy Byrnes won the annual aggregate, making her the Euchre Club player of the year. Judy won three aggregates outright, was equal first in one and finished second in another. We may not see Judy for a while because with all of her winnings she will probably take a round the world trip. Congratulations Judy and well deserved. Judy has a fantastic record in the annual aggregates. Examination of the trophy on which the aggregate winner’s name are etched reveals that Judy has won on sixteen occasions since 1992. I am sure all members will agree that we should give Judy a handicap so the rest of us mere mortals have a winning chance. Our end of year Christmas dinner was held on the 19th of December in Easy Eats. A two-course meal was enjoyed by all without a single complaint. Our president Caroline Arona presented Judy with her trophy and cheque for winning the annual aggregate. The interclub competition resumes on the 7th of February. Colin Manton Secretary
FISHING There were two scheduled trips organised for October however, due to rough conditions one was rescheduled for early November. The October trip that did go ahead was with a full boat of excited and expectant fishermen, looking to bring back the catch of the day. The charter boat departed at 6am starting out wide in 40 fathoms as the weather permitted, however by 9am increased winds created a swell of approximately 2 metres, forcing us to head in closer to around 35 fathoms. Despite all, we continued fishing and pulled up lines at 1pm, just before heading back into the harbour to weigh the catch. A reasonable haul was brought in, consisting of 16 Morwong, 4 Snapper, 1 Leather Jacket, 1 Pig Fish and 6 Flathead. The biggest fish, a Morwong (1.370 kg) was caught by Frank Rapa and the biggest bag went to George Schembri, weighing in at 6.005 kg. The rescheduled trip went ahead in the first week of November; again, our captain took a full boat out wide to start with. We were fishing in about 45 fathoms with initially calm seas. However, changes in the weather forced us in to about 30 fathoms. The catch consisted of 25 Morwong, 9 Snapper, 1 Long-fin Perch, 5 Pig Fish and 4 Flathead. The biggest fish was a Morwong, weighing in at 1.14 kg and was caught by Michael Ohlson. The biggest bag went to Charlie Harb, weighing in at 6.895 kg. An early December trip was scheduled but it was moved to mid-week due to weather conditions. We headed out on Wednesday, the weather was perfect, the seas calm, the swell modest and anxious fishermen on board all expecting a great

days fishing. We motored out for an hour to get to the fishing grounds planned by the boat skipper, he took us to 150 meters and with the drift this equated to 200 meters out of line. It was a long and tiring wind in just to check your bait but this is what fishing is all about, getting out on the water and dropping a line. The fish caught was the best of the three outings and consisted of 11 Morwong, 3 Snapper, 33 Leather Jackets, 2 Pig Fish, 14 Flathead, 12 Long fin Perch and 1 Pearl perch. The Pearl Perch was a rare catch that far south, this particular breed of fish is normally found further north of the Central Coast; a very surprised fisherman when he brought it in. The biggest bag went to Frank Rapa, weighting in at 88 points and the biggest fish reeled in was a flathead caught by Andrew Harvey, weighing in at 1.2 kg. At this time of the year we have the second of our Small Boat weekends, this is where those that own a boat or can arrange to be with someone who has a boat, go to Greenwell Point near Nowra and stay at the local Coral Tree Lodge Tourist Park which is located on the river. From there you can head out over the bar and fish or stay in the river and fish the estuary. The weekend trip in November had only half a dozen boats; usually there are an excess of 20. The two scheduled weekends in 2019 are in April and November and we expect to be back to normal with 20 or so boats. These Small Boat weekends are great to get to know other boaties and to spin a few yarns over a beer or two at the local bowling club. The trips in 2019 have been finalised and will be placed on the notice board in the Wenty Leagues sports area. If you are interested in fishing or just want to have a chat please contact the fishing club representatives. Till next tide, Andrew Harvey Publicity Officer

After recovering from an injury, I returned to the Pool on Sunday the 16th of December, so results from our visits to Castle Hill and the Four Way Swim at Bondi cannot be reported on. However, it was good to get back into the water and celebrate with Tony Miller who recorded a “spot on” time for the 30-metre freestyle. Because of vacations our numbers were down slightly but those in attendance had an enjoyable morning.
