CAROLS ON RINGROSE RAISES MUCH NEEDED FUNDS FOR STRUGGLING YOUTH To celebrate the festive season, Wenty Leagues invited the community to the 2019 Carols on Ringrose event. The evening began with a warm welcome from Youth Off The Streets Ambassador, Father Chris Riley, followed by an array of talented entertainers including; Sharnielle Hartley and Dancers, Bustamove Dance School, Christmas Groove Band, Tina’s Choir, Adam Scicluna and our headlining artist, Paulini Curuenavuli who all gave unforgettable performances. The rides were exciting, the food was superb and to cap off the night, everyone was treated to a stunning fireworks display. Most importantly, the event raised an impressive $10,000 for Youth Off The Streets.

A BRIGHTER CHRISTMAS FOR FAMILIES WITH SERIOUSLY-ILL CHILDREN Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our Wenty Leagues members, the Christmas Gift Donation Box overflowed with over 500 brand new toys. All these gifts were donated to families with seriously-ill children at Ronald McDonald House, Greater Western Sydney.

A SPECIAL LUNCH FOR THOSE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS ON CHRISTMAS DAY Wenty Leagues partnered with Parramatta Mission for the ‘Buy a Plate for a Mate’ campaign. The initiative reached out to all our members and guests to donate $25 at any one of our food and beverage outlets which translated into a meal for those experiencing homelessness on Christmas Day. More than 100 meals were donated to this wonderful cause. In addition to supporting this initiative, Wenty Leagues also donated 500 jelly cups, 500 chocolate mousses and 100kgs of garden salad. The Mission served over 1000 people on Christmas Day.

THE JOURNAL

President’s Report Dear Members Welcome to another exciting and eventful year at Wenty Leagues. I would like to begin this report by thanking you all for your generosity and support of Wenty Leagues’ community initiatives over the festive season. Once again, the Christmas Toy Drive received an overwhelming response as well over 500 brand new toys were collected and donated to families with seriously-ill children at Ronald McDonald House, Greater Western Sydney. The Parramatta Mission, ‘Buy a Plate for a Mate’ initiative, was also a success raising much needed funds to provide meals for those experiencing homelessness on Christmas day. Carols on Ringrose grew to another level attracting well over 2,000 people who came together to sing Christmas Carols and enjoy a spectacular fireworks display on Ringrose Oval. This event raised a total of $10,000 which went towards supporting Youth Off The

Streets initiatives to help at-risk youths in our community. Looking ahead, 2020 is shaping up to be another milestone year as more projects in our Master Plan are due for completion. A great highlight so far was last month’s grand opening of CHAR, Steak and Seafood Restaurant. Providing an elevated dining experience through an a la carte service, CHAR offers a 200-seat capacity and premium selection of steak and seafood. I’d like to commend all the hard work by our builders, management team and staff for the successful launch of this new restaurant and invite all patrons to sample the delicious menu. I’m excited to announce that still to come will be a multi-space event centre and an elegant and sophisticated cocktail bar named ENVY set to open in the coming months. In closing, I have some very sad news to report as Wenty Leagues Director, George Mumford sadly passed away late last year. Over his

many years serving on the Board, George’s contributions have helped guide Wenty Leagues towards a strong and positive future and he will be greatly missed. Our deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to his family. On behalf of the Board, I thank you all for your continued patronage and look forward to seeing you around the club. Ian McCann President

THE JOURNAL

CEO’s Report Dear Members It was great to see the club full of cheer during the holiday season and it was a pleasure to welcome the many families and friends who shared their Christmas time at Wenty Leagues. Always the busiest part of the year, we hosted an assortment of events and activities including a special Christmas Dinner to recognise and show appreciation for community volunteers from Parramatta Mission, Youth Off The Streets and Ronald McDonald House. Moreover, as Ian mentioned in his report, the culmination was our Carols on Ringrose event which enjoyed a huge turnout from the local community for an evening of live entertainment, rides, food trucks and a spectacular fireworks display. The excitement remains high with our new a la carte steak and seafood restaurant, CHAR now open. A premium dining experience, it’s the perfect setting to celebrate Valentine’s Day with that special someone. In The Plaza, weekly member offers will continue at Chefs Grill plus there will be some exciting dishes

to try at Pizza Mama, Crave Desserts and Red Panda Noodles which are available for a limited time only. Senior’s Week will introduce exclusive food specials in the Chefs Grill and a special morning tea and performance by two of Australia’s most talented artists, David Bond and Paula Watt in the Starlight Room. Speaking of entertainment, acclaimed live ticketed acts, Roy Orbison Reborn starring Dean Bourne and The Robertson Bothers Variety Show will headline this month’s line up. There will also be a variety of free entertainment every week in the Wenty Lounge and Outdoor Alfresco Dining Area in The Plaza. There are great promotions to look forward to including a chance to win a trip for two to the amazing, Las Vegas. Winning Wheel of Cash is set to begin again this month and we are also giving away family passes to one of Sydney’s most popular events, the Royal Easter Show. Rugby League will be ramping up for another spectacular season and the Magpie Sports Bar is the best place to watch all the action every week.

George was indeed an inspiration to us all and he will be truly missed. In closing, thanks to all our members and visitors for your continued patronage and patience as our Master Plan works continue. 2020 is shaping up to be another exceptional year and I look forward to greeting you at the club. Glenn Kovacs Chief Executive Officer

Our deepest and heartfelt condolences go to the Mumford family during this difficult time.

Sub Clubs CRICKET CLUB Mid way through the season most of our senior teams are doing well and are well poised for the run to the finals. Of our 11 senior teams, 2 are top of the ladder (B1 and B4), and another 5 teams are in the top 4 (A White, A Grey, B2, B12 and B15). With some good play and hard work, there is the possibility of all the above teams making the semi-finals and hopefully then, the Grand Finals. Some great batting performances: Mark Lockyer 113 (A White round 4), Jamal Khan 105 (B2 round 7), Brad Jackson 108 no (B8 round 7) and Isidor Orland 125 (B11 round 4). Great bowling from Rahulan Jegatheeswaran 5/24 (A Grey round 5), Geer than Kumaran 6/21 (B1 round 8), Sagar Patel 6/50 and 5/16 (B4 round 7), and Khaja Pasha 5/15 (B4 round 8). Our overseas player, Russell White, has proved to be a devastating bowler, taking 8 wickets in two different matches. In round 4, Russell took 8 wickets for 15 runs in 6.5 overs, and in round 6, in 8 overs he took 8 wickets for 58 runs. This included a hat trick! Well done Russell! Our junior teams are doing well, with 5 of the 11 teams in the top four. These teams are U12/2 Grey, U12/1, U13/1 Grey, U14/1 White and U16/1. Some teams have struggled with dropouts and team members away on holidays and we have had to fill in teams with some talented youngsters from the Masterblaster program. Hopefully next season, players will commit to the full season when signing up to register at the star t of the season.

Our own Club Player of the Year was Betty Kay. Betty is a regular at all our social and club competition events and although has retired from playing, is always there to organize and control the games for us. Well done Betty. Ellis Fletcher was also awarded Life Membership because of her dedication to the Dar ts Club. Ellis represented the club in various western district competitions for over twenty years and even though Ellis does not play in any of our representative competitions anymore, Ellis is also there helping out at all our social and club events. Congratulations to Ellis. Congratulations also to Andria Hendly (Secretaries’ Award) and Ray Swan who won our Social Award.

presentation to the various championship winners. There are championships for men’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles, open doubles, men’s singles and women’s singles. The game is block dominoes and is easy to play, but there is a strateg y and skill involved. Any member of the Leagues Club is eligible to play. Come along and have a game. It is ver y easy to learn the basics. Prizes each night are $20 first, $10 second and $5 third. Most games involve two pairs competing against each other. If the total number of players is odd, and there are a lot of odd players, there may be a singles game. The dabba dabba have been ringing out once again with the return of the ladies favourite player, Winston Tattersall.

The results of our competitions are Dan Cross Money Challenge: (2 Winners) Ellis Fletcher and Steve Gumbleton, with Lisa Cobb and Lenny Norris as Runners Up.

DOMINOES The Dominoes Club plays each Thursday at 7.30pm in the Magpie area. It costs $3 to play and registration is required by 7.15pm as it takes 15 minutes to organize the game. There is a draw for par tners each night. The games are played over 5 sets and the set is completed when one team has won 5 games. Whoever wins the most games on the night is the winner. In the case of ties, the winner is whoever lost the least amount of games. If there’s still no outright winner, there is a countback from the fifth set. There are annual championships and the Dominoes Club holds a dinner and there’s a 28

Toomey The presentation night was held on 21 November in The Pavilion. Ever yone was dressed to the nines and enjoyed the food. It was good to see Marilyn Reilly there looking a million dollars after her recent treatment and we hope to see her back playing in the new year. There was a lot of laughter and it was pleasing to see ever yone enjoying themselves. There are cer tainly a lot of avid oyster and prawn lovers! Theresa Toomey cleaned up most of the prize money and had a big smile for some time. Unfor tunately, in the week after the dinner, Theresa suffered a hear t attack and has had to move into a nursing home. Dorothy Lawton still has Ray Gorbatenko’s measure. Despite playing with champion player Ken Stagg, Ray could only achieve a nineteen all draw with Dorothy and Gil Chaperon on 5 December. On the same night, Shirley Kenir y took great delight in telling all, Pat Jolly was caught with six dominoes. The ladies favourite player, Winston Tattersall was born on Christmas day. Josie Moncrieff made a bir thday cake and a fruit cake. Josie is not good at maths, as she only had two candles on the cake (perhaps Winston is two hundred years old)! The cake was delicious. We hope to see ever yone returning in Januar y fully rested. Colin Manton Committe e Member

EUCHRE The Euchre Club is playing each Wednesday near the TAB commencing 7.30pm. Sixteen games are played, with a break after 8 games and cash prizes and club vouchers for first, second and third. It costs $3 to play each night, plus a $3 annual membership fee. There are prizes for the best aggregate ever y seven weeks, with six aggregates per year. There is also a prize for the best annual aggregate over for ty-two weeks. Any player lucky enough to win eight or more games in a row on any night also receives a small prize. On the social side, there is a Christmas dinner. New players are always welcome. You do not need to be an exper t player to par ticipate and you will find there is a range of ability amongst the players. You star t with a par tner and change par tner after each game. Changing par tners is fun. Like any endeavour, ability improves with practice. Lessons can be arranged for those unsure of how to play or who wish to improve. If you have never played, we can teach you. If it has been some time since you have played, we can arrange a refresher session. A special mention must go to John Chen who was the Wenty Club Spor tsman of the Year representing the Indoor Bowls Sub Club. Obviously, John plays bowls better than he plays euchre! FISHING We had two fishing trips scheduled for October, but due to poor seas and bad weather one was cancelled. The trip that did go ahead saw eager fishermen excited to be back on the water. Not a great catch, but still, all enjoyed the outing. The catch consisted of: 8 Morwong, 6 Snapper, 2 Flathead, 2 Leather Jacket, 3 Pig fish. The biggest bag went to Mick Preetipino with 2.511kg and the fish also went to Mick with a reasonable Snapper weighting

0.978kg. Mick will enjoy eating that one! A subsequent trip was organised in November, while the details are scratchy, there was a good mix of fish caught. The catch was made up of 11 Morwong, 5 Snapper, 15 Flathead, 27 Leather Jacket, 1 Long Finned Perch. Not all weighed in, so there was no biggest bag awarded. The biggest fish, a Sergeant Baker, was caught by Mick Prestipino coming in at 1.38kg. Sergeant Bakers are not included in the points scoring due to the type of fish it is. Early December, again another trip was arranged, with keen fishermen ready to get amongst the big ones! A good day was had. The weather was kind, the seas calm. Even though there was a slight swell, there was nothing to worry about, especially for the hardened fishermen on board. The catch consisted 9 Morwong, 2 Snapper, 8 Flathead, 88 Leather Jacket (this is not a typo but the actual count!), 5 Pig fish, 4 Long Finned Perch. The biggest bag went to George Schembri with 9.445kg with the biggest fish caught by Joe Romcek, a Snapper 1.905kg. Well done George and Joe. The trips for 2020 have been finalised. There are three small boat trips arranged for February, May and again in November. These are great weekends away at Greenwell Point. If you are interested in joining the Fishing Club or would just like to know more, please contact a committee member. Details are found at the end of the Sub Club Reports section of this Journal. GOLF We have played our club championships over 4 rounds in both scratch and handicap in grades with A Grade winner in both being Jim Clarke beating Frank Soballa who was runner up in both. Jim played very consistent golf over the 4 rounds with his last round being 1 over par on the day. Jim has become our Club Champion again, a feat he has achieved now 7 times, a club record! B Grade was a close affair in both events with 6 players going into the last round with chances to come out on top and the B Grade scratch finished in a tie between Rob Trent and Jeff (mumbles) Munday which required an 18 hole playoff which was won by Rob Trent. B Grade handicap winner was Glen (general) Grant who finished 1 shot in front of Rob Trent and Jeff (mumbles) Munday. C Grade was another close affair with Norm Hindy winning both from Matt Simmonds. 3 players were most unlucky in the Club Championships with Dominic Scali a clear

Both are now okay and back playing golf again - very lucky indeed. Ryan Payne was in A Grade, fighting with Jim and Frank for honours, but diverted back to the crash site to see if his mates needed any assistance. In our Clubman of the Year, Ryan Payne leads on 216pts from Nathan Cook on 204pts, followed by Jim Clarke making a late charge on 193pts, with Dominic Scali on 178pts. Nathan and Dom are most unlucky in our clubman event, as their car crash stopped them playing for 3 weeks. Norm Hindy achieved every golfer’s dream, with a hole in one at the 18th at Glenmore, which also netted him our jackpot of $300 - a nice Christmas present. Jim Clarke also won a jackpot hole, but it was 1 week too late, winning only $50. On the 27th of October we played our return game against Gosford Leagues Club at Gosford and both clubs had 16 players, with the top 10 from each club counting towards the shield, with Wenty proving too strong, with 325pts to 278pts.
