President’s Report Dear Members It’s great to see everyone enjoying our new casual dining precinct, The Plaza. In the coming months we’ll unveil the last outlet as part of the Plaza, Red Panda Noodles and a premium dining offering and cocktail lounge adjacent to the Starlight Room. As the Masterplan re-development continues, look forward to Stage B delivering premium car parking spaces, improved pedestrian access and a new grand entrance foyer by the end of the year. Stay up to date with the Master Plan by visiting our website and social media pages regularly to see the latest progress. I’m pleased to report that Wenty Leagues have renewed sponsorship of $20,000 in funding towards a 2-bedroom apartment in Ronald McDonald House, Westmead. Wenty Leagues sponsored room 204 which includes facilities such as, spacious hallways and bathrooms for easy wheelchair access, laundry facilities, dining and kitchen space and a private balcony overlooking quiet bushland. Each year, the Ronald McDonald House, Westmead help support over 1,360 families with seriously ill children. The

funding from Wenty Leagues gives the club the opportunity to connect and engage directly with the house and families whilst providing much-needed financial support. I wish to commend the efforts of our Staff as they continue to do some amazing work supporting the Parramatta Mission Meals Plus Outreach Program and the Ronald McDonald House Meals from the Heart Program. Led by CEO, Glenn Kovacs, volunteers from all departments lend their time by helping prepare and serve hot meals to sick children and their families and to over 200 homeless and/or disadvantaged people in need. It has always been a firm value of mine to always give back and advocate through action, a strong commitment to the community. Applications for the 2019 ClubGrants Category 1 have now closed and I would like to wish all who applied the best of luck. Notification on the outcomes of each application will be released in July. On this note, I’m proud to share that the Board, Management and Staff take pride in being able to service the needs of the local

community through numerous initiatives that support not-for-profit organisations. Finally, on behalf of the board I would like to thank those who attended the 61st Annual General Meeting in May to hear about the strong results over the last year despite the extensive redevelopment the Club is undergoing. This is a testament to the efforts of the board and staff at Wenty Leagues throughout 2018 and could not have been achieved without the ongoing support of all our members. I look forward to seeing you all at the Club. Ian McCann President
The grand opening of The Plaza signified the end of Stage A of the Master Plan and as we set our sights towards Stage B, the excitement and anticipation continues to grow. With that said, I’d like to begin my report by conveying my gratitude to all our patrons for the support they’ve shown during this period. I’d also like to give a special thank you to our staff for their amazing efforts in reaching this milestone. As with many large projects, challenges can arise along the way, and I believe our team has handled the pressure with absolute professionalism and continued to ensure we deliver exceptional hospitality. The response has been amazing as each dining outlet in The Plaza has introduced new flavours which have impressed and delighted tastebuds. Moreover, the style and décor has created a vibrant atmosphere which truly encompasses our theme of ‘a home away from home.’ As we now approach the colder months, look forward to Chefs Grill bringing
you some off-menu hearty favourites and Crave Desserts to deliver sweet baked pies and pastries designed to warm you up for winter. I’d also like to introduce you to our talented team of pastry and dessert chefs who will be creating these freshly baked delights from scratch in our in-house bakery. You can read more about the team on page 10. Following on from the success of the White Rabbit High Tea during Easter, this time we will be hosting another inspired by Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. A fun family activity for the school holidays, treat the kids to a selection of finger sandwiches, miniature cakes and sweet treats. Tickets are limited so I encourage you to book early to avoid disappointment. Entertainment has always been a core focus at Wenty Leagues, and we pride ourselves on providing our members and guests with the best entertainment experience. As a testament to that commitment, I’m excited to announce that we have been recognised as a finalist/winner in the large venue category for the ‘Club Award for Excellence & Commitment to Entertainment.’ This award takes into consideration the level and quality of entertainment provided throughout the year. Continuing this commitment, there is a spectacular line-up of entertainment to look forward to in the coming months – see page 18 for more details.

picking up second place, congratulations to all players.
O’Connor, Beryl Taylor (11).
After a promising start to the season and with good results mid-season, the weather unfortunately played a large part in dashing our hopes for multiple premierships in both the Junior and Senior competitions. At the time of the semi-finals there were four Senior and four Junior teams in contention for the finals, but just like last year the wet weather in the days prior to the weekend meant that many pitches were too wet to play or the outfield was underwater. As a result, the enforced draw meant that most of our teams’ statistics weren’t good enough to ensure they won by points. This was disappointing as many matches that were labelled as ‘draws’ due to weather, could have been very close and our teams may have prevailed against teams we had beaten throughout the season. Next season we may have to ask the weather Gods to hold the rain until after the Grand Finals!
Our Friday social events are going from strength to strength with several new players now playing not only on a Friday social, but also representing our club in the Western Districts Completions. Come and join us in the Magpie Bar on Friday nights for a fun night. David Harrison
Congratulations to the following who managed the excellent feat of winning 8 or more games in a row: Judy Byrnes (13/3), Hertha Roedl (27/3). The first aggregate for 2019 was won by Jolly Judy Byrnes with 60 points. The runner up was the master of unorthodoxy, Dennis the menace Williams on 58 points.

Mick Prestipino is back playing after his stroke, welcome back Mick. I wonder if his stroke has affected his reneging ability. I am sure everyone is sorry that Mick has lost most of his voice. The decibels are way down.
We did have two Junior teams win their Grand Finals, the U16/1 and U12/1 – well done boys, and congratulations on a great season with consistent results. Excellent performances in the U16/1 with the bats by Aidan Caine (35), Ravin Ganesh (50) and Shanuk Karandeniya (47) putting us in a great position of 7/171. Good bowling by Imaadh Nafeel 2/10 off 6, an amazing 4/12 off 11 by Shanuk Karandeniya, 1/2 off 4 by Aidan Caine plus tight bowling by the rest of the bowlers restricted the Hills Barbarians to just 71 runs – a brilliant victory.
The Dominoes Club Championships have commenced so we wish all players the best of luck in the upcoming competitions. Winners of the February competition are as follows, J Van Eekeres, P Jolly, K Stagg and T Toomey. Our March winners consisted of R Chaperon, A Alderman, J Moncreiff, C Vella, S Caine, R.Garden, B Casey and R Chaperon.
Our U12/1 team also performed brilliantly on the day. Baulkham Hills batted first, but Aiden Johnpillai’s 2/5 off 5, Hrehan Shah’s 2/8 off 7, Viren Garg’s 2/7 off 4, Sandeep Ravishankar’s 2/12 off 4 and Ashaan Jayapragash’s 1/5 off 4 saw them all out for 71. Our boys then took to the bat and Aditiya Tiwari’s strong 26 and Viren Garg’s 18 n.o. saw our boys victorious with 3/73. Congratulations boys on a fantastic victory.
Game 3 Wed 10 July
A huge thank you to the Coaches, Managers and Scorers of all teams. Without your valuable assistance our teams could not function and would not have as much fun. Your love of cricket and your desire to see your sons and daughters do well in this great game is wonderful to see, and we greatly appreciate your involvement. We are now getting ready for Junior and Senior Presentations to be held in May and are looking forward to a quieter couple of months before it all starts again with registrations in July!

EUCHRE The Euchre Club plays each Wednesday near the TAB whilst the renovations are in progress commencing 7.30 p.m. Sixteen games are played, with a break after 8 games and cash prizes and club vouchers for those placing first, second and third. It costs $3 to play each night plus a $3 annual membership fee. There are prizes for the best aggregate each seven weeks with six aggregates per year. There is also a prize for the best annual aggregate over forty-two weeks. Any player lucky enough to win eight or more games in a row on any night also receives a small prize. On the social side there are two dinners per year. New players are always welcome. You do not need to be an expert player to participate and you will find there is a range of ability amongst the players. You start with a partner and change partners after each game. Changing partners is fun and like any endeavour, ability improves with practice. Lessons can be arranged for those unsure of how to play or who wish to improve. If you have never played, we can teach you. If it has been some time since you played, we can also arrange a refresher session. Results since the last journal are as follows (winning games in brackets); 20/2 1st Hertha Roedl (12) 2nd Charlie Grech, Terry Scott (11) 27/2 1st Joe Brassaud (12)2nd Fran Boxall, Ray Gorbatenko, John Long, Dennis Williams (10) 6/3 1st Ray Gorbatenko, Col Levingston, Hertha Roedl (11) 13/3 1st Judy Byrnes (14) 2nd Caroline Arona, Norm Towells, Dennis Williams (11) 20/3 1st Christel Brassaud (13)2nd Mitch Paterson (12), 3rd Les Bowerman, Judy Byrnes, Ray Gorbatenko, Tony Irvine, Betty Kay, Dorothy Lawton, Col Levingston, Bill Seinor, Dennis Williams (9) 27/3 1st Joe Brassaud, Hertha Roedl (12) 3rd Caroline Arona, Ray Gorbatenko, Bill Seinor (11) 3/4 1st Fran Boxall (12) 2nd Bill Seinor (11), 3rd Ron Betteridge, Charlie Grech, Joe Brassaaud (10) 10/4 1st Col Levingston (12) 2nd Judy Bowerman, Hertha Roedl (11) 17/4 1st Bill Seinor (12) 2nd Ray

Sadly, we have lost another member. Our favourite pommie, Dennis Williams has moved to Goulburn to be a full-time career for his wife. Hopefully the love Dennis has for his wife will make her burden easier to bear. We will miss the way Dennis plays each card, his slightly unorthodox play, his big smile and his sense of humour. Dennis will be missed at Wenty, Merrylands and Cabramatta. Hopefully he will turn up for a game if he happens to be in Sydney and will be welcome. Colin Manton Secretary
FISHING Since the last report we have had three deep sea fishing trips scheduled. Unfortunately, one was cancelled by the boat skipper due to poor conditions and in the interests of safety. The second fishing trip went ahead in March, as well as the first of the 2019 ‘Small Boats Competition,’ which took place in April at Greenwell point, just south of Nowra. The first deep sea fishing trip in March saw a very windy day, the current was strong which made it difficult for our fishermen to hold bottom. Even with our mandatory one-pound sinkers the lines constantly drifted off, making it very challenging to catch fish. Despite the rough conditions and a lousy days catch, a good day was had by all and we reeled in 1 Morwong, 2 Snapper, 8 Flathead and 1 Pig Fish. The biggest bag went to Greg Scott with 46.3 points and the biggest fish also went to Greg with a Pearl Perch, weighing in at 1.50kg. Those who attended the second trip in mid-March also had poor weather conditions to contend with. Rough winds and a large swell forced a strong current which made it hard to hold bottom. This time of year is notorious for strong currents. Nevertheless, the fishermen were still keen get out amongst it. The eagerness was evident with all on board expecting a decent catch and a story to tell when they get back home. Overall it was a good day, but unfortunately the fishing was poor and the catch consisted of 6 Morwong, 6 Snapper, 7 Pigfish and 5 Sergeant Baker. Other fish were caught however due to size restrictions they were thrown back. The biggest bag went to Joe Romcek with 3.160kg and the biggest fish went to George Schembri with a Sergeant Baker weighing in at 1.365kg. The first Small Boats competition for the year saw attendees travelling down to Greenwell Point. Fishermen stayed at the Coral Tree Lodge Tourist Park and spent the day on the water, either over the bar where you can fish as deep as your boat will allow or in the river where it is much calmer. Some fishermen head out 10 kilometres from land where supposedly the big fish are located. On the first day the fishing was poor however, it picked up on day two and good catches were made by all attendees. While the tally for this trip is not yet in, the biggest fish caught was a Flathead which weighed in at

0.8kgs. Once again the weather was poor, it was rather windy with a large 3 metre swell and deceiving currents that looked calm on the surface but had our lines swaying below. This did not stop our eager fishermen. The trip back into calmer waters was quite turbulent and as we came in over the bar all boat captains had to be on alert so we made it back safely. All did!
7.30pm. Congratulations to the following executive committee members for 2019: Rick Cefai as Sensei, Ray Bligh as President, Amanda Seck as Secretary and Deanne Pierce as Treasurer. I would like to further congratulate our off-mat committee Doug Rapp, Caroline Karachristos, Karen Hilton, Renee Forbes and all instructors as well as patrons Trevor and Marie Simpson.
For those with a boat who are looking for a weekend away with people with similar fishing interests, please contact a member of the Fishing Committee. Dates regarding the next Deep-Sea fishing trip and Small Boats trips can be found on the notice board in the gaming area at the club.
A further congratulations to the following students who were recently graded:

GOLF The Golf Club Stableford Championships have been completed with Jim Clarke coming in as the A Grade Winner on 146 points, closely followed by Ryan Payne on 143 points. Nathan Cook became the winner of B Grade on 134 points, from Kel (Soups) Fangupo on 130 points. The winner of C Grade was Charlie Ghaleb with 133 points, followed by Lisa Jade on 125 points. These results see our 2019 Clubman of the year Nathan Cook, leading on 57 points, from Kel Fangupo on 37 points. On the 10th of March 18 players ventured to Nelson Bay for the Golf Club weekend away. The weather was hot and some great golf was played with Jim Clarke taking the lead on 73 points, closely followed by Leon Plotkans in second place on 72 points. Rob Willis and Alan Thompson both came in as equal 3rd on 71 points. The following weekend we were due to play Gosford Leagues Club at Penrith however, due to heavy rain the game was cancelled. Our Summer Ambrose was played with once again the winning team being Ryan Payne, Nathan Cook, Dominic Scali and Alan Thompson on a score of 52. Jim Clarke, Leon Plotkans and Frank Soballa came in as runners up with a score of 56. This tournament also saw Rob Trent winning one of our Jackpot Holes with a shot of 36cm, which was worth $270. Our Memorial Trophy was played in grades with Ryan Payne taking first place in A Grade, followed by Leon Plotkans. B Grade was won by Glen (General) Grant from Rob Willis, whilst Lisa Jade took first place in C Grade, with Troy (Parra) Tyson coming in second. This tournament also saw Troy becoming the first player in 2019 to join the Air Swing club with Tosca Lipovic also joining the following week. Another notable result in our knockout C.O.W was the win of Lisa Jade defeating Ryan Payne our Club Champion, off handicap, well done Lisa. We regret to inform that former Golf Club member, Frank Martin has sadly passed away. Frank was one of the most respected and honest players this club has had and he will be sadly missed. The Golf Club is always looking for new members and females are most welcome, for more information please visit the Golf Club website. Alan Thompson President

In the state competition, the Men’s Triples saw John Chen play lead in the winning team. In the ladies Triples winners were Barbara Hill and Monika Korn. MENS BOWLS Hi Wenty Leagues Club members this is the latest Club Journal report prepared for your information regarding the Men’s Bowling Club. nominate as he has since moved up to the beautiful Tea Gardens area near Port Stephens). After a 12 months sabbatical, Jeff Gallagher has returned to the Bowls Secretary’s role and will work closely with our Bowls Coordinator Cameron Curtis, to make sure all things run professionally and smoothly in that area. The ‘Judge’ Graeme Roberts has moved from Secretary to the vacant Vice President’s role and the remaining Committee spots were filled by Ken Ashton, Steve Baldwin and John ‘Emu’ Stephenson, who have already hit the ground running and are doing a great job in assisting where required. We thank the outgoing Committee member sincerely who did a wonderful job during their tenure and were only too happy to continue in the role too. Our Minor Fours Championship was completed recently with Peter Bird, Steve Bain, Greg Benson and Chris Hainey coming in as winners. Bob Mauro, Dave Campbell, Frod Niko, Bill Massard took the title of runners up. The club Major Pairs is now to the final which will be played in the next few weeks. It is sure to be a beauty with all the finalists from the Grade 1 pennant side. Mark ‘Scruffy’ Barton and Cameron Curtis will be up against Jeff Gallagher and Brendan Conway. The draw for the club Major Singles will be finalised soon and we have a new Open Sets Play Singles Event that has already commenced, and the ladies are already giving the guys some headaches in some of the matches. More results available by the next report. State Pennants commence Saturday in early March this year with Wenty Leagues having six pennant sides in Grades 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7. As we pause for the Easter break now, it has been a very strong start to the season with many of our grades doing well. Our Grade 1 side are currently midway in sixth spot, with the top six sides going to State playoffs in late July. A last round loss to St Johns Park was tough, as a win would have seen them in second spot. Our Grade 2 side were undefeated until their last game going down heavily to NBC Sports. A minor hiccup we hope as a win against Carlingford should solidify a top two spot for the Zone 10 finals to be held at Wenty Leagues on Saturday and Sunday, 25 & 26 May. The Grade 3 have been doing it tough with only one win to date, but a couple of close losses. Many of the clubs in their group are the top grades for that club, so it has been a challenge since being promoted from the 4s last year. Grade 5 are undefeated and are flying at the moment. Six clubs will be in the Zone playoffs at The Hills Club late May, so still a lot to do to make sure they’re on the bus to the Central Coast in July for the State Finals. Grade 6 suffered a shock loss to Toongabbie last round away but are still hanging onto second spot in their section and a Zone finals berth. Chief Grade 6 Selector, Frenchy, has been making plenty of swaps and changes in a bid to get things to click, so we keep our fingers crossed that they find that next gear. Grade 7 have been having a topsy turvy season and although currently second last in their section, a win over Toongabbie in the next round could see them jump multiple places, so close is the ladder currently. In early March we kicked off a new nominated pairs format on Friday mornings. Numbers seem to be solid, but we have room for a few more sides. Please spread the word to your mates from other clubs to ensure we keep the $200 prize money going and the one-end knockout finals system which seems
JUNE/JULY 19
to be popular with most of the members. There are plenty of ways to win a prize with winners, runners up, lucky card and jackpot. We saw Bob Mauro and George Charalambous knock off the $550 jackpot a few weeks ago, so that is always a draw card when the value gets up. Wednesday turnaround triples is still going well. Consistent numbers are the key to whether we have a break for winter or keep powering through; so, make sure you keep getting your names down… both men and women. Now is the time for any Wenty Club members who would like to consider taking up the game of Bowls, remember, free coaching is available with Grade 1 player, Brendan Conway, most Saturday mornings from 9.30am or otherwise our other coaches Barrie Craig and Bowls Coordinator, Cameron Curtis (mb: 0412 089 833) are always available. Many regular club social members and other sporting sub-club members have already been down to try their hand at bowls, so why don’t you come along too!
team. In the men’s pairs John Chen played lead in the winning team and in the mixed pairs Barbara Hill played lead in the team that lost on the final bowl. Congratulations to all of our players. The test match against New Zealand will be played next month in New Zealand. Barbara Hill and Monika Korn will be representing our country in the Australian team. Good luck and good bowling to these ladies. Results of the test match will be in the next journal.

On Sunday the 7th of April, we conducted our A.G.M where Tom Lamont stood down from the position of President due to ongoing health problems. This required a ballot which resulted in Robin Thomson being elected as president of the Swimming Club for the 2018-2019 season, and Tony Miller as Vice President. Sadly, Howard and Shirley Ambler also declined to stand for any positions but will be staying in a helping capacity as required. Howard has previously submitted in writing a motion seconded by Tony Miller that Tom Lamont is to be granted lifetime membership of the Swimming Club. It was passed that Tom be awarded this honour with the vote being unanimous in his favour. Congratulations Tom on a well-deserved award. After the A.G.M, some of our members attended an afternoon swim at Castle Hill. Elaine Miller, Jess Seaborn and Tony Miller all gained placings in their events. We held our Presentation Luncheon on Sunday the 14th of April with the bulk of trophies going the usual way of Tim Miller, Jess Seaborn, Howard Ambler and Sean Henly. Rhonda Hill and Graeme Harvey also gained awards. Our thanks go to Kristy and her team for the abundance and quality of the food provided for our lunch. John McCann Publicity Officer
WOMENS BOWLS I can’t believe that we are almost six months into the year, time just seems to be flying by so fast and with the new additions to the Club it makes it so exciting to come in each day not knowing what to expect. The Pennant season is moving along so fast unfortunately we still have a few games to be played and I will have to give you the results in the next issue but keep up the good work ladies and most of all enjoy your games. Good luck to our ladies playing the final of the Major Single. Our first lady into the final is Sue Lemon and she will play either Betty Hammond or Gilly Bird. Upcoming events consist of the June Triples Championships, which will be held on the 6th of June, with the Minor Singles taking place on the 4th of July. The AGM will take place on the 11th of July so please remember to check the notice board for any changes regarding dates. FOLLOW US
SPORT Once again, we have some of our ladies not in the best of health, I would like to wish our secretary Joyce Rochford and Maria Kovac all the best for a speedy recovery, we hope to see you both back at bowls soon. Ladies Bowls are played every Thursday at 9.30am, if you would like to have a great game of bowls and meet new people come along to Wenty Leagues. New players are welcome to turn up on the day, you just need to arrive before 9am or ring our bowls secretary, Joyce Rochford on 98635420. Alternatively; you can call our Bowls office on 98963518 before Thursday morning. Good Luck and good bowling to everyone. Diane Martin Publicity Officer
WDRLFC (NSW & RON MASSEY CUPS) With the 2019 season finally up and running our 3 teams have had a very successful starts to the year. Our women’s team, competing in the Harvey Norman Women’s League, have created their own piece of history in the round 1 clash against Canterbury with their first win in the competition, defeating the Bulldogs 22 – 4. The girl’s next game was against the Bears but unfortunately we went down in a close encounter 20 – 14, but to the girls credit they played with only 15 players. After a bye and two ‘no game’ weekends the ladies sit in fifth position on the ladder. This week they will travel to Newcastle for their round 7 clash. Our Canterbury Cup side has had an up and down start to the season with 3 wins and 3 losses from the first 6 rounds. Round 1 was a close encounter going
down to a strong Penrith outfit 22 – 12, but round 2 saw the boys travel to Belmore and defeat last year’s premiers 24 – 22. Round 3, our first home game of the year, unfortunately saw a heart-breaking defeat 21 – 20 with the North Sydney Bears kicking a 40 metre field goal in the last minute of the game. Round 4 saw the team back in winning form with a 42 – 10 demolition of the Newtown Jets but unfortunately couldn’t keep that winning form in round 5, going down to the Mounties in the national capital 32 – 16. In Round 6 the boys christened the new Bankwest stadium with a hard-fought win over Wests 20 – 14, creating history as the first winning team in the new arena. After 6 rounds the Canterbury Cup team sit in equal 6th position. The boys will travel to Newcastle this week to take on the Knights who are currently sitting in 8th place. Our Ron Massey team have started their 2019 campaign where they left off last year with the defending premiers defeating Cabramatta in the 1st round 22 – 12. Round 2 saw a bit of a hiccup going down to Hills 14 – 10 but the next 3 rounds have seen emphatic wins by the boys defeating last year’s runners up St Marys 40 – 12, Glebe/Burwood 38 – 0, and Wests 20 – 6. After a bye in round 6 the Ron Massey side sit in equal 1st position and this week they travel north to take on the 4th placed Asquith. All information relating to the WDRLFC including complete draws for the Harvey Norman Women’s, Ron Massey, and Intrust Super Premiership teams can be found on our website www.wentymagpies. com.au Martin De Bono Secretary
