PRESIDENT’S REPORT CEO’S REPORT

Dear Members Welcome to the June/July issue of your Wenty Journal. It’s hard to believe that we’re already midway through the year and as you’ve no doubt seen, our Master Plan has kicked into gear. The multistorey carpark has begun to rise and will provide an additional 780 car spaces. The clearance of the bowling green has made way for building to begin on our new multi-outlet casual dining precinct which will feature four new outlets with seating for over 850 people. The kids play area is also undergoing a facelift as we upgrade to bigger and modern facilities for kids of all ages to enjoy. With so much happening, stay up to date by visiting our website and social media pages regularly to see the latest progress. Applications for the 2018 ClubGrants Category 1 have now closed and I would like to wish all who applied the best of luck. Notification on the outcomes of each application will be released in July. On this note, I’m proud to share that the Board, Management and Staff take pride in being able to service the needs of the local community through numerous initiatives that support not-for-profit organisations. Most recently, Wenty Leagues supported the Parramatta Referees Association

by donating $12,000 to help implement better communication technology while on the field. Additionally, Wenty Leagues also took an active approach towards fighting children’s obesity by partnering with Minifit to help improve the growth and development of children by promoting the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle. Run by NRL football great Anthony Minichiello, Wenty Leagues was the first to support the Minifit Clinic at Ringrose Oval and so far, there have been three clinics with the next one scheduled for Wednesday 18th July. It’s great to see kids getting active and setting up healthy habits early which will last the rest of their lives. More information on this inspiring initiative is on page 5. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank those who attended the Annual General Meeting in May to hear about the record profit for 2017 and detailed budget updates on the Master Plan. Your continued support is essential to helping the Club grow and prosper and solidifying our position as the community’s venue of choice for exceptional hospitality and leading entertainment. We trust that you will continue to be active in enjoying the facilities and services that your Club offers. Ian McCann President

McDonald House Meals from the Heart Program. Numerous times throughout the year, volunteers from all departments of the Club lend their time by helping prepare and serve hot meals to sick children and their families and to over 200 homeless and/or disadvantaged people in need.

Dear Members I would like to begin by conveying my gratitude to all our members for the patience and support provided as we proceed with construction on our Master Plan. We are working tirelessly to minimise the disruption and to ensure you continue to enjoy your Wenty Leagues experience. In saying this, I’m excited to introduce two new dining outlets which are now open while the building works continue – Easy Eats 2145 and Demolish. For these outlets, the food and beverage team has designed an exciting menu to satisfy every palette. Demolish will push the limits of your beliefs towards what goes into burgers and pizzas whilst Easy Eats 2145 brings back our appreciation for the old favourites. Not to be outdone, Lawsons Bistro has also created some hearty specials to keep you warm this winter and opening early and closing late, Wenty Café has extended trading hours to cater for breakfast or a late-night meal. Read more about all our unique dining offerings from page 6. Our staff continue to do some amazing work throughout the community by supporting the Parramatta Mission Meals Plus Outreach Program and the Ronald

Wenty Leagues will be putting support behind ‘Do Something Day,’ which is an initiative to recognise and encourage the extraordinary contributions made by everyday Australians. In line with this, I encourage you to donate gently used or new sports equipment which we will pass onto Youth Off the Streets, Wentworthville. Sport, physical health and physical education are very important parts of their programs and it gives kids joy to be able to play with a variety of new equipment. Look out for the donation box which is in front of the Swipe Terminal as you enter the Club. On Wednesday 25 July, to commemorate the initiative and raise further funds, I will be challenging Parramatta Eels greats Nathan Hindmarsh and Nathan Cayless and Youth off the Streets Program Manager, Josh Te Tai in an exhibition game of darts inside the Magpie Bar. I invite you to watch and join the fun as we raise money for this great cause. More details see page 5. In closing, I would like to thank you all for your continued patronage and I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

MASTER PL AN

UP D AT E

CONTINUED PROGRESS ON IMPROVING YOUR WENTY LEAGUES Construction is well underway on the next stage of the Master Plan and we’re getting closer to achieving our goal to transform Wenty Leagues into a better hospitality, entertainment and function venue for the community. From these photos you can see the second level of the multi-storey car park is now complete and if dry weather continues, the whole structure will be on track for completion in late 2018. The parking area is a significant upgrade to the Club’s facilities and will offer 780 car spaces, two lifts connecting all levels, CCTV security and for added convenience, a counter at the entrance advising patrons of available spaces. The clearance of the bowling green to make way for our new multi-outlet casual dining precinct has made significant progress. At the time of writing, the foundation has been poured and set for construction of level 2 and beyond to begin. Delivery for this area is scheduled for

early 2019 at which point our four new specialist dining outlets will be unveiled. Thanks to those who attended the Kids Reno Party in May as we farewelled the old kids play area to start construction on creating a larger and modern kids entertainment space. This new area is set to include a movie room, dedicated toddler area, indoor/outdoor temperature control, two party rooms and a parents’ room. Once again, we thank you for your continued patience and understanding during this construction period. For regular updates, progress signage has been placed at the entrance of the Club or you can visit www.wentyleagues.com.au/master-plan

COMMUNITY

CREATING A POSITIVE IMPACT IN OUR COMMUNITY Wenty Leagues continues its ongoing partnership with Parramatta Mission to help those in the community who are disadvantaged or in need of essential support services. A team of eight from Wenty Leagues which included members of staff, the management team and CEO, Glenn Kovacs, spent the day preparing food, cooking, setting tables and serving hot meals to over 200 people in need through the Parramatta Mission Meals Plus Outreach Program. Meals Plus is a day centre that provides the homeless and/or disadvantaged with basic needs such as emergency food assistance, laundry and shower facilities, financial counselling, legal advice and referrals to accommodation services.

WENTY LEAGUES INVESTS IN NEW TECH TO HELP LOCAL REFEREES In a highly competitive rugby league match, a lot of onus is put on the referees to make the right call. With such an important role it’s essential for referees to have the equipment to be able to do this, otherwise things can get controversial.

This ongoing partnership is essential because it aligns with the vision and values the Club encompasses. Wenty Leagues has a proud history of “supporting community groups through volunteering, donating funds and raising awareness. Parramatta Mission is just one of the many charity organisations Wenty Leagues is partnered with to assist those who are disadvantaged” said CEO, Glenn Kovacs. Parramatta Mission Meals Plus Coordinator, Paul Moussa addressed the volunteer group prior to the lunch service to thank Wenty Leagues for their generous collaboration. He went onto say, “Meals Plus is a valued program by people who are facing homelessness, and many are living with a mental illness. This program receives no Government funding and depends upon the generosity of community and corporate sponsors such as Wenty Leagues.” Wenty Leagues staff will again volunteer at Parramatta Mission this month. For more information about Parramatta Mission Meals Plus Outreach Program visit, www.parramattamission.org.au

Earlier this year Wenty Leagues provided support to the Parramatta Referees Association by donating $12,000 to help implement better communication technology for referees to talk to one another during games. The new technology was introduced this season and according to Referee Robert Morey, “the radio equipment really makes our job easier. It’s great to have similar technology as first grade available because it adds to the quality of the game. We really appreciate Wenty’s ongoing support.” As one of the premier hospitality destinations in Western Sydney, Wenty Leagues has strived to continually find opportunities to assist and promote service and development needs that make a difference in the local community. The referees are always looking for new people to join them. If you are interested please visit www.parramattarefs.com for more information.

COMMUNITY

DO SOMETHING DAY Wenty Leagues is inspiring members, guests, staff and subclubs to donate gently used or new sports equipment during the Do Something Day campaign which will run from now until Wednesday 25 July. Do Something Day is an initiative to recognise and encourage the extraordinary contributions made by everyday Australians.

To contribute to this campaign, Wenty Leagues will place a special donation box in front of the Swipe Terminals that we aim to fill with sporting equipment. If you don’t have any old sporting equipment, you are welcome to make a gold coin donation at Reception. At the conclusion of the campaign, all donations will go to Youth Off the Streets, Wentworthville to create a positive and noticeable impact on the lives of young people in the community.

“Whether it be a ball or pair of footy boots, I encourage everyone to go above and beyond during Do Something Day and give their best through acts of kindness. A little bit can go a long way.” Glenn Kovacs, Wenty Leagues CEO.

DINING

Now open As we move forward with our Master Plan to provide the community with a bustling dining, entertainment and function precinct; we are excited to unveil a new food outlet designed to take diners on an adventure of the senses.

Finally, you don’t have to travel all the way to the city to be blown away by creative chefs who can seamlessly bring together dishes that both boggle the mind and excite the tastebuds. Head Chef Colin Yabsley says, “Demolish will push the limits of your beliefs towards what goes into burgers, pizzas and wings. It’s a flavour experience that takes it to the next level.” A great example is the Elvis Pigsley, a tribute to a favourite sandwich of the King himself. The burger is made with pork belly, crunchy peanut butter, streaky maple bacon, fried banana, coleslaw and caramerlised onion peacan jam on a milk bun. This mix of savoury and sweet flavours complement one another beautifully and bring out the best in all the salty, sugary and rich ingredients. Another is the Peking Duck Pizza made with hoi sin sauce, onions, shallots, fried wonton, cucumber, coriander and mozzarella. The mixture of Asian inspired ingredients placed on a pizza dough and baked inside a woodfire oven creates an amazing blend of East meets West flavours. Along with many other offerings available, Wenty Leagues invites you to challenge your tastebuds and be surprised how seemingly contrasting ingredients can work amazingly well together at Demolish. WINTER REDS WITH

WINTER IS COMING

TIME FOR A DARK BEER

The 2017 vintage was excellent, with good yields of above average quality. After a late start to harvest, McLaren Vale was terrific, delivering well-balanced vines, good crop levels of fantastic colour and flavour. The grenache rosé is especially delicious: floral and perfumed. 2017 will be remembered as a great year for both winemakers and grape growers alike, good weights, great wines and even better optimism! Winemaking Notes: Clean ferment using Rhone yeasts (Syrah & Clos) to help promote those savoury characters. Fined after ferment and held cold, filtered to bottle. Tasting Note: Definitive Grenache on the nose, lifted boiled lollies, candied sweet aromas, lots of lovely tartness on the palate of pomegranate and sour cherry. A hint of sugar to complement that acid. Enjoy now to 2 years of age.

On Friday, 9 March, fifteen of our Club members travelled to Nelson’s Bay to compete in the Annual A.I.F. Championship Carnival. This year attracted 465 swimmers representing 33 Clubs. Southport, as usual, had the largest group, approximately 15% of the total number.

As Maureen started in the water, she was at a disadvantage, but she chased hard to earn her trophy. Well done Maureen and Tom and to all our team who gave their best in the water and just as importantly represented our Club with pride and dignity. Our Club Championships began on Sunday, 18 March and the Presentation Day was Sunday, 15 April. Results etc. in future reports. John McCann Publicity Officer

WOMENS BOWLS As we progress into the new year of bowling it is still very exciting to have won Wenty Leagues Club of the Year award 2017. What a great honour, but it doesn’t stop there; we are also starting a new era of bowling at Wenty Leagues Bowling Club with our new undercover bowling green. This has just opened and everyone is thrilled and can’t wait to start playing on it. The Major Singles have been played and now we are just waiting for the final to be played. Lee Benson and Sharon Walpole will play the final after Pennants has finished, which should be a great game, good luck to both of you. Pennants is already underway and I would like to wish everyone good luck for the rest of the season. As always we have had some of our ladies not feeling the best, I would like to wish them all a speedy recovery. I would like to welcome Betty Hammond and Carmen Jones back to bowls and say a big hello to Geraldine Baldwin - we hope to see you back soon. We have a lot of changes going on at the Club and it might be a little difficult to keep track of things that are coming up. Please check with our Bowls Organisers or the notice board for up to date information. Ladies Bowls are played every Thursday at 9.30 am, if you would like have a game of bowls and meet new people, come along to Wentys at 9am or ring our Bowls Secretary Joyce Rochford on 98635420 prior to the day. You can also contact our Bowls Office on 98963581 after 8.30 am on the day. Diane Martin Publicity Officer

To achieve any success against such a strong opposition is hard but Wenty Leagues came through with two of our team among the “spoils.” President Tom Lamont pulled out a great swim in his heat to qualify for the final of the 30 metres handicap where he finished a touch out WENTYLEAGUES.COM.AU

WDRLFC (NSW & RON MASSEY CUPS) INTRUST SUPER PREMIERSHIP. The season commenced on Sunday, 11 March against last year’s Premiers Penrith Panthers at Penrith. The team consisted of a majority of Wenty contracted players and after starting brilliantly led 24-0 at half time. Penrith staged a comeback in the 2nd half to make it tight but Wenty held on to win 32-24. Our next opponents were Blacktown Sea Eagles at home and another strong showing was expected. However, things did not go to plan and we were comprehensively beaten 46-0. Newcastle Knights were our guests at Ringrose but after leading well into the second half Wenty could not withstand the late challenge and were defeated 24-16. Things did not get any better against wests Magpies and in another disappointing performance lost 44-4. From this point things improved with successive wins against Blacktown 28-12, Penrith 16-14 and Wests magpies 26-6. With points from a bye Wenty has moved into equal second only 2 points from the leaders. Coach Nathan Cayless is working hard to keep the momentum going.

RON MASSEY CUP The competition started on the 8th April with visit to the Hills district. Although the trial form leading up to this match was excellent it did not carry over and although leading clearly at half time were ultimately beaten 24-22. Things turned around next game with good win 32-22 against Cabramatta, but Round 3 versus Guildford at home saw another loss 24-20. Round 4 our opponents were Penrith Brothers at Ringrose and in a game, that reached no heights Wenty were able to scramble to a 18-16 win. Coach Brett Cook has a challenge on his hands to get what is at the moment and under achieving team to play to their ability. HARVEY NORMAN WOMEN’S LEAGUE. Our venture into the Women’s League to date has not yet produced a win with several heavy losses to much more experienced teams. This aside the girls have not given up and have tried to the end of every game. With a new coach recently appointed improvement is noticeable and trust that a victory in the near future will result. All information re WDRLFC draws for 2018 can be found on our website www.wentymagpies. com.au. You can become a WDRLFC member by joining on line or at the can bar on game days. Joining fee is $20 which includes entry to all Wenty home games and a Wenty cap which in itself is great value.
