THE JOURNAL

President’s Report Dear Members

It is pleasing to be able to report that construction on the Wenty Leagues Master Plan is progressing exceptionally well. In the previous undercroft carpark area, adjacent to the main foyer, new administration, staff and back-of-house amenities have been successfully delivered. This will become significant to our members, as the original administration area occupies prime real estate on the rooftop level. In 2019, the existing administration and staff areas will be demolished, to make way for a large Function Centre, to cater for all types of social and business functions. It is also fantastic to see our six-level multideck carpark nearing completion. The carpark is expected to be delivered prior to Christmas and will deliver 780 new carparking spaces, of which 650 will be covered from the elements. Further to the good news, ADCO are on track to deliver Stage A of their building program in the first quarter of 2019. At this time, we will open the first part of our casual dining precinct, The Plaza. Features for this area will include, internal and alfresco dining options with seating for up to 850, pizza, grill, noodle bar and dessert bar outlets, a main bar, a multiuse function room (with bar) and a larger, improved kids play area. As we come to the end of the year, I am pleased to report on the numerous initiatives Wenty Leagues has continued to support throughout the local community. In my previous report, I mentioned our involvement

with ClubGRANTS which saw Wenty Leagues and 7 other clubs come together to distribute a total of $1,035,643 in funding to community projects in the Cumberland area. From the various organisations supported through this scheme, Wenty Leagues was proud to present much-needed funding to Holroyd High School, Youth Off The Streets, Royal Life Saving Society, Greystanes High School, Holroyd Youth Services, The Humour Foundation, Parramatta Mission and the Salvation Army. Wenty Leagues distributed a total of $74,646 in funding to these great organisations. You can read more about how these projects improve the lives of people in the local community on page 5. Please note that applications for funding will once again open in April 2019. In recent months a drought has been affecting many regions in Australia and our farmers have been doing it tough. Australian farmers are the backbone of our country and now they need our support to keep their cattle alive. Wenty Leagues is helping affected rural communities by supporting Buy a Bale of Hay which provides hay and other essential items to farmers who have no feed left for their cattle. By donating to this organisation, they will ensure that our farmers receive the fodder they need and the support to get them through this tough time. You can help by making a donation at any of the boxes located throughout the club or you can donate online by visiting www.wentyleagues.com.au/ our-club/community/support-ourfarmers-buy-a-bale. In closing, while we move through this period of growth and expansion, on behalf of the Board, I once again thank all our members and visitors for their patience and continued patronage. THE JOURNAL

CEO’s Report Dear Members It’s been an exciting and eventful time at Wenty Leagues and I am happy to share that our staff got behind some great community initiatives over the last few months. In addition to preparing and serving hot meals, our continued support towards Ronald McDonald House extended to gathering much-needed grocery supplies for seriously ill children and their families. The team also came together to attend sponsorship galas held by Youth Off The Streets and Parramatta Mission and it was great to hear about the strides they’ve made over the years. I was especially honoured to address the audience at Parramatta Mission’s Raising Hope Gala and help raise support and bring light towards the effects of homelessness in the community. I thank the efforts of all those involved and congratulate all the charities who held successful events and raised needed funds for their organisation. Once again, this year’s Magpies Family Fun day was a great success. Despite the windy weather, this event brought together the local community for some exciting matches of rugby league along with free rides, a jumping castle and petting zoo for the kids. We look forward to celebrating again next year. It was also great to see many families come together to celebrate Father’s Day at the club.

Looking ahead we have many other activities planned leading into the holiday season. All the information is within this Journal so make sure you pencil the dates into your calendars. While most of us will be winding down the year and starting to plan for Christmas holidays, Wenty Leagues will be winding up and into a busy festive season. The final Winning Wheel of Cash promotion will be held on Wednesday 14 November and we’re looking forward to some famous homegrown talents such as Diesel, Shannon Noll and Damien Leith take the stage in the Starlight room. Oktoberfest is also taking place this month and there’s still some last-minute tickets remaining. Book now to enjoy a German inspired 3-course set menu and dance the night away as the Starlight Room becomes our very own German Beer Hall. As you’ve no doubt seen, the decorations in the club have marked the beginning of the Spring Carnival Racing season. I invite all members and visitors to join us on Melbourne Cup Day to watch the race that stops the nation. The event includes a glass of sparkling wine on arrival, a delicious 2 course luncheon (alternate serve) and live cabaret entertainment performing the best of Michael Buble and Natalie Cole. To avoid disappointment, make sure you get your tickets early for this event as they will sell out fast.

Finally, after listening to your feedback we’re excited to announce a new menu at Easy Eats 2145 which includes all-time favourites such as Smokey Pork Ribs, Sydney Rock Oysters and Beef and Ale Pot Pie. Demolish is presenting us with some interesting and creative pizzas which are sure to challenge the tastebuds. Read more about these new offerings from page 8. Once again, I would like to thank you for your continued patronage and I look forward to greeting you at the Club. Glenn Kovacs Chief Executive Officer

MASTER PLAN

UP D AT E

SURPASSING THE HALFWAY MARK As we lean into the warmer months of the year, every day sees new features added to both sites as the final structure continues to take shape. Hard work, good planning and consistent dry weather, has provided the opportunity for construction to pass well beyond the halfway point. The excitement is building as we get closer to officially unveiling the culmination of months of work.

650 will be covered from the elements. Two passenger lifts will connect all levels for convenience and at time of print, the cladding is being installed for the front faรงade. This faรงade will be an exciting spectacle as a large multistorey magpie will feature on the corner of the Great Western Highway entry driveway and be illuminated by signage proudly displaying the Wenty Leagues logo on multiple sides of the building.

In what was previously the undercroft carpark area adjacent to the main foyer, new administration, staff and back of house facilities have been successfully delivered. This will become significant to our members, as the original administration area currently occupies prime real estate on the rooftop level which in 2019 is scheduled for demolition. This will allow us to make way for a large function centre that will cater for all types of business and social events. This function space will contain two interconnecting rooms that can cater for 150 people or can open to cater for 300. There will be another two rooms which can cater for smaller groups of 50 people but can also open up to cater for 100. Along with state-of-the-art AV facilities, guests will be able to mingle in a pre-function lounge that will be located in the atrium space directly above the new main foyer.

Further to the good news, ADCO are on track to deliver Stage A of their building program in the first quarter of 2019. At this time, we will open the first part of our multioutlet casual dining precinct, The Plaza. This area will include numerous internal and alfresco dining options and seating for up to 850 people. An exciting feature currently being built is a unique roof line which will form level 1 of the building and connect into the new main foyer and porte-cochere. Construction for this section will be completed in 2019.

The six-level multideck carpark is also nearing completion. The carpark is expected to be finalised prior to Christmas and will deliver 780 new spaces, of which

YOUTH OFF THE STREETS

LAUGHTER CAN BE THE BEST MEDICINE - THE HUMOUR FOUNDATION

Supporting our young people can take many forms. In some situations, there is a need for case workers, a warm meal and place to stay; in others we need to give young people the tools and ability to flourish and grow. The ongoing support provided by Wenty Leagues has given Youth Off The Streets opportunities to develop programs that reach out and make a difference to the lives of young people in crisis situations.

One of the largest regular programs in Australia, the Clown Doctors at the Children’s Hospital, Westmead help treat children in hospital with medicine of a different kind – doses of fun and laughter! Imagine being a child in hospital, away from the comfort of your home and all that is familiar, feeling sad, anxious, frightened, lonely or in pain. This is where Clown Doctors can help. By parodying the hospital routine, they help children feel less traumatised by medical procedures. They divert children during painful procedures, help calm distressed children in emergency and encourage children in physiotherapy. For a moment, children can forget about their illness.

One such program is the Youth Advisory Squad, an initiative that helps local youth in reaching their potential in education, employment and community life. The Youth Advisory Squad is comprised of local young people who have shown excellent leadership qualities and dedication to community projects. Part of the projects the squad is undertaking is a sleep-out for homelessness, White Ribbon Day, sports events at local schools and the “Together 4 Hope” community walk. A major highlight in the program is a leadership camp at Point Wolstoncroft where youth spend time learning life skills in teamwork and building confidence.

Operating 4 days per week, delivering over 24,000 tailored humour therapy engagements with sick kids, their families and hospital staff, Wenty Leagues’ partnership with the Clown Doctor program will go towards providing ongoing support and professional development to ensure they are able to perform to the best of their ability.

Youth Off The Streets is dedicated to helping young people grow as best they can, and with the continued support of Wenty Leagues are able to achieve great things!

EVENTS

MAGPIES FAMILY FUN DAY Our Magpies Family Fun Day was held in August with lots of families enjoying a great afternoon of footy, food and free family fun. Despite the windy weather, it was a great atmosphere as the kids were treated to free carnival rides including a giant slide, jumping castle and petting zoo. There was also a visit from the Parramatta Eels players, Poppy the Possum and Macca the Magpie. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the day and we look forward to doing it all again next year.

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE The Wenty Leagues’ team continued their efforts in preparing preparing and serving hot meals for seriously ill children and their families at Ronald McDonald House. In addition, our staff gathered donations of muchneeded grocery items to keep the kitchen supplied throughout the coming months.

DOMINOES

A new season is upon us and we’re excited to be fielding 7 senior teams and 16 junior teams. Additionally, registrations are open for the Junior Blast starting in October which offers youngsters an introduction to cricket skills (this program was formerly called Milo Cricket). If last year’s numbers are anything to go by, we should have strong attendance for this great introductory program which helps young children develop the skills of batting, bowling and fielding which are essential for a good grounding in cricket. To keep up to date with scores, results and performances, keep an eye on our website.

We are about three quarters of the way through our championships and we would like to wish the best of luck to the members still competing. Our presentation will be held towards the end of November.

DART CLUB This year’s Do Something Day on Wednesday 25 July saw the Dart Club coordinate a friendly exhibition match between Nathan Hindmarsh and Joel Fitzhenry against Wenty Leagues’ CEO, Glenn Kovacs and Youth Off The Streets Program Director, Josh Te Tai. The winners of this inaugural challenge were Nathan and Joel who took home a special trophy to commemorate their efforts. We look forward to this event next year and continuing to support Youth Off The Streets initiatives. A big thank you to all who assisted on the day. Results from our recent Doubles Club Championship Day were the following: Men’s Doubles winners were Tony Warne and Steve Gumbleton. Steve hitting a 180 and runners up were Andriy Chernysh and Ian Merry who also hit a 180. The Ladies Doubles was won by Michele Blommestein and Kim Rousell and the runners up were Andrea Hendley and Lisa Cobb. The Mixed Doubles Club Championship went to Lenny Norris and Andrea Hendley with the runners up being Donna Carthy and Tony Warne. No club games are being run during September, but our second Dan Cross Money Challenge will be held on Sunday 21 October. Our Presentation night tickets will soon be available. Please see Ian or Roz and secure your place for a great night. Regular Friday Night Social Darts will continue in the darts area during the temporary construction, so we look forward to seeing all players as usual. David Harrison President

EUCHRE It is with deep sadness that I need to report the passing away of a long-term member Barry Phillips on 28 July 2018. Barry was the previous Vice President of the Euchre Club and a member of the Wentworthville Euchre Interclub Team. Barry was 75, a dear husband, father and grandfather. Barry will be missed by all who loved him. The Euchre Club received a lovely card from Barry’s family thanking those close to him for their friendship, concern and for attending the funeral service. I only knew Barry for about eighteen months but found him to be both a gentleman and a gentle person. He will be missed. The Euchre Club plays each Wednesday at 7pm near the TAB whilst the renovations are in progress. Sixteen games are played, with a break after 8 games and cash prizes & club vouchers for first, second and third. It costs $3 dollars to play each night plus a $3 annual membership fee. There are prizes for the best aggregate each seven weeks with six aggregates per year. There is also a prize for the best annual aggregate over forty-two weeks. Any player lucky enough to win eight or more games in a row on any night also receives a prize. On the social side there are two dinners per year. New players are always welcome. You do not need to be an expert player to participate and you will find there is a range of ability amongst the players. You start with a partner and change partner after each game. Changing partners is fun. Like any endeavour, ability improves with practice. Lessons can be arranged for those unsure of how to play or who wish to improve. If you have never played, we can teach you. If it has been some time since you have played, we can arrange 28

The long-term members are doing well. The third aggregate for 16 May to 27 June was won by life member Jolly Judy Byrnes on 61 games with Lucky Les Bowerman on second with 59 games. The fourth aggregate from 4 July to 15 August was won by, guess who, Les Bowerman with Dashing Danny Gaal the runner-up. For those that don’t know Danny is 90 years young and obviously going strong. I don’t know what Danny is, perhaps an almost centenarian. As far as I know Danny is the most senior euchre player in the various euchre clubs. Keep going Danny! On 4 July we had the biggest turnout of the year with 36 players competing in the TAB area with all enjoying themselves. We all thought Terry Scott was going to set a new record on 29 August when he had won only one game after fourteen games. There were cheers all round when Terry won game fifteen despite frantic efforts to stop him. Terry also won game sixteen. His three wins also match my lowest score and that of a few others.

Around the traps. I was playing euchre at Fairfield RSL in July and on the bye and was lucky enough to watch Domenico (aka Mick) Prestipino playing when Mick astounded all by trumping in on the last trick with the six of hearts. Great mirth all around. Mick is Vice President of the Wenty Fishing Club. Stick to fishing Mick, (however, he does keep winning.) I was also at Club Condell Park in the same month when Jolly Judy Byrnes ordered up with five trumps and went alone and got promptly euchred. Judy thought it was a fantastic feat. Could make a good case study for training.

The result was a little better than the previous trip but with the weather hopefully to improve and with a kind sea, the fishing can only get better.

FISHING Finally, we have a few happy fisher men! Due to the poor weather and unkind seas, several scheduled fishing trips were cancelled in the interest of safety. However, we were able to get two trips in over the last couple of months. In mid-July a full boat headed out which promised to be a good trip, but the weather once again played havoc. We were prepared with wet weather gear and determined to stay dry but the winds picked up and the seas became uncomfortable. Nevertheless, it was a reasonable catch with: •

The biggest bag went to R. Baker and the biggest fish a Sergeant Baker to R. Jodko at 1.545kgs. Not a bad effort as we had keen and enthusiastic fishermen just glad to be on the water and drop their lines. Our second trip was in August, again due to postponed and cancelled trips, finally got away and again there were keen and enthusiastic fishermen anxious to make a day of it and come home with a good catch. The morning at this time of the year, as it does, started quite chilly but progressively improved. By mid-morning the weather was fantastic, and a big catch was anticipated. There was little swell making drifting possible and few tangles leading to a reasonable catch with a good variety of fish caught. The biggest fish, a flathead 1.230kg was caught by Frank Rapa and the biggest bag went to Andrew Harvey weighing in at 4.195kg.

GOLF Golf is played in all kinds of weather and because it hasn’t rained during winter, golf courses have suffered with most fairways having no grass. With fairways just dirt, it was a great shock when the doubles match/ play final was played at Wentworth Falls on the 12 August. The temperature was minus 4 degrees with no rain, but we had to contend with snow making this day extremely difficult. The winners in the final saw Lisa Jade and Troy (Parra) Tyson defeat Frank Martin and Alan Thompson 3/1. Congratulations to Troy and Lisa who teamed up and played great golf in this event. Congratulations to Lisa as this was her first championship win. Moving forward, we’d love to encourage more female golfers to be part of the Golf Club. For more information please visit the Wenty Leagues website. The Leagues Club Cup has been played with the results as follows: A Grade winner Ryan Payne from Mark O’Brien B Grade winner Kel Fangupo from Rei Reihana C Grade winner Alan Beckart from Tosca Lipovic. Our American Foursomes was won by Frank Martin and Glen (General) Grant from Alan Beckart and Dominic Scali. The Clubman of the Year after 33 weeks sees Kel Fangupo leading on 133pts from Alan Thompson 120pts then Jim Clarke on 114pts with Dennis Ainsworth and Glen (general) Grant on 112pts. This being our top 5 players. Guzzler Cups winners lately have included Kel Fangupo, Nathan Cook, Rob Trent, Alan Thompson, Norm Hindy, Ryan Payne and Rob Willis. Our Jackpot holes currently stand at $750 and $200 well-worth winning. Our Cock of the Walk competition has reached the semi-finals with the 4 players left to fight in this event being Mark O’Brien, Rob Trent, Danny Chaiban and Glen (general) Grant. No new members for the Airswing Club but Tosca Lipovic obliged again. Alan Thompson President

From these initial Inter-Zone matches, Zone 10 selected their 12-man side to compete in the Bowls NSW State Inter-Zone Championships at Wagga Wagga in mid-September. Steve Harry, Anthony Breese and Cameron Curtis were successful in making that side. ZONE 10 STATE TRIPLES CHAMPIONSHIP The above three bowlers (Harry, Curtis and Breese) were successful in winning the State Triples title for Zone 10 and now venture to Ettalong on the Central Coast for the State Finals in mid-September. In the Zone 10 Reserve Triples (for players graded 5-7), it was an all Wenty Leagues affair. The winners were Michael Brown, Steve Baldwin and Graham Richards defeating Ken Ashton, Fred Nagle and Richard Hickey in a closely contested affair. WENTYLEAGUES.COM.AU

All in all, a terrific season so far on the greens for Wenty Leagues, with the highlight coming from one of the lady bowlers, Lee Benson. Lee won the NSW Champion of Champion Singles Title having to win five matches to win her club singles and another seven rounds to win the State Title. Lee now travels to Hobart in October for a tilt at the Australian Title. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS The Clubs Triples and the Major/Minor Pairs Championship will commence during October, along with the Mixed Pairs and Mixed Triples Championships. Cameron Curtis Bowls Coordinator

Both Barbara and Monika have been selected into the squad of 20 players to trial in January for the test team against New Zealand which will be held in New Zealand in May 2019. WDRLFC (NSW & RON MASSEY CUPS) INTRUST SUPER PREMIERSHIP At last report after 16 Rounds Nathan Cayless’ team had slipped out of contention and were struggling to regain momentum. Further losses to Warriors (30-22) in Round 17, Dragons in Round 18 (40-22) and although losing to Newtown (22-18) it was an encouraging return to form. Round 20 saw the momentum continue and finally got a well-deserved win (18-16) over the Newcastle Knights. The good form continued with a strong win over the well credentialed North Sydney Bears (36-30) with the score only close due to some late tries to the Bears. The next opponents were the highly fancied Mounties at Ringrose on a cold windy day but the good form continued and Wenty had a resounding win (22-16). With teams ahead losing and with 3 straight wins Wenty had moved from near the bottom of the ladder to be equal 8. The final game against a top 4 placed Canterbury Bulldogs resulted in a disappointing loss (22-14) which ended the season out of the top 8.
