Dear Members As we approach the back end of the year the excitement in the club is growing. Premium car parking spaces will soon be operational directly in front of the club and once opened, will offer improved pedestrian access to a new foyer. Aside from the modern and spacious design, the foyer will be the central hub which will conveniently connect patrons to various club facilities. This year the master plan also brought to life The Plaza, our multi-outlet casual dining precinct. Catering to a broad audience, each outlet has been designed to give members a variety of menu options from the Chefs Grill, Pizza Mama, Red Panda Noodles and Crave Desserts. Moving forward, our sights are now set on the construction of our much-anticipated, premium dining restaurant, CHAR. Providing an elevated dining experience through an a la carte service, CHAR will offer a premium selection of steak and seafood with an emphasis on seasonal fresh produce and quality ingredients. CHAR will have a 200-seat capacity along with a private dining area which is set to open later this year adjacent to the Starlight Room. I
I am pleased to report on the numerous initiatives Wenty Leagues has continued to support throughout the local community. Previously, I mentioned our involvement with ClubGRANTS which saw Wenty Leagues and 7 other clubs come together to distribute a total of $1,202,897 in funding to community projects in the Cumberland area. Wenty Leagues distributed $186,882 in funding to some great organisations such as Hilltop Road Public School, Youth Off The Streets, The Shepherd Centre for Deaf Children and St John Ambulance Australia to name a few. You can read more about how these projects improve the lives of people in the local community on page 4. Please note that applications for funding will once again open in April 2020. Following on from our support of ClubGRANTS, I am also happy to share that Wenty Leagues got behind some great community initiatives over the last few months. Wenty Leagues proudly supported Jeans for Genes Day helping to raise awareness to find cures for children’s genetic diseases and the Think Pink High Tea raised money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Our continued involvement with Parramatta Mission saw a team of over 10 staff members
prepare and serve meals to those struggling with homelessness in our local community. Despite being amid a huge redevelopment project, the club continues to maintain a strong and active community focus. Starting in November until Christmas, the Community Giving Tree will be open where you can donate new toys for seriously-ill children at Ronald McDonald House, Westmead. As mentioned to members at the AGM, a committee has been formed by the Board to review the club’s constitution. First printed in April 2001, the constitution has not had a major review for legislative compliance in that time. Once the committee has finished the review, they will present it to the Board before the Board present the recommendations to the members for debate. In closing, while we continue to move through this period of growth and expansion, on behalf of the Board, I thank all our members and visitors for their patience and continued patronage.
Dear Members I’d like to start by thanking all our patrons for their continued support and patience during the master plan redevelopment. Despite the ongoing construction, we aim to provide all our members and guests with the best hospitality experience. The coming months is no exception with many offers, promotions, entertainment and special events scheduled to round out the year. A very exciting time at Wenty Leagues is always the Spring racing season and ‘the race that stops a nation.’ The club is gearing up for race-day celebrations and I invite all members and visitors to join us on Melbourne Cup Day to watch the race. Along with the live telecast, there will be a special event in the Starlight Room which includes a delicious 2 course luncheon (alternate serve), live entertainment and lucky door prizes. To avoid disappointment, make sure you get your tickets early as this event will sell out fast. The Oceans Adventures promotion has been
very popular, and I extend big congratulations to our cruise winners so far. There are still 4 more draws in October so don’t miss out on a chance to win a cruise to some incredible Pacific Island paradises - see page 6 for details on how to enter. There are some great offers in The Plaza starting with Chefs Grill lunch and dinner offers available throughout the week and at Red Panda Noodles try experimenting with different flavours by creating your own Asianinspired rice or noodle dish. Pizza Mama is introducing a pizza and salad lunch offer and now with the cold weather behind us, it’s time to try some of the cooler items at Crave Desserts such as the signature shakes, spiders and gelatos. Along with our exciting lineup of weekly entertainment, some highlighted shows in October include direct from the USA, Elvis An American Trilogy, staring Vic Trevino Jnr, Ben Thompson and Justin Shandor, 3 of the world’s greatest Elvis performers and The Great Gig In The Sky, a Celebration of Pink Floyd. Late November will feature Australia’s most loved and successful country groups, The McClymonts returning to Wenty Leagues to play their #1 hits. Fans can enjoy Brooke, Sam and Mollie’s stunning sibling harmonies and award-winning songwriting skills in an intimate acoustic setting.
celebrations will begin with a Monster Seafood Raffle and a chance for kids to build and decorate their own gingerbread house centrepiece for the Christmas table. There’s plenty more happening, see page 22 for more information. Once again, I would like to thank you for your continued patronage and I look forward to greeting you at the Club. Glenn Kovacs Chief Executive Officer
Finally, while most of us will be winding down the year and starting to plan for Christmas holidays, Wenty Leagues will be winding up and into a busy festive season. Christmas

GLINYS MCCABE 40 YEARS OF SERVICE AT WENTY LEAGUES Glinys McCabe celebrated 40 years of service with Wenty Leagues and to commemorate this incredible milestone, a special morning tea was held in her honour. With Glinys’ family also in attendance, the Wenty Leagues Board, Management Team and Staff acknowledged her dedication to providing exceptional customer service. Glinys is always a warm welcoming presence when greeting members and guests at reception and while the attendees enjoyed a beautiful assortment of fruit platters and freshly baked in-house pastries, Glinys shared some of her most memorable moments at Wenty Leagues. ELVIS – AN AMERICAN TRILOGY
THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY – PINK FLOYD CELEBRATION
ELVIS An American Trilogy, direct from the USA, stars Vic Trevino Jnr, Ben Thompson and Justin Shandor, 3 of the world’s greatest Elvis performers. The show begins with Vic Trevino Jnr as he captures the rockabilly sound and dance moves of the young Elvis. Ben Thompson, 2018 winner of the Ultimate Elvis Tribute artist contest worldwide, effortlessly recreates the movie years & the 68 comeback special, from army uniform to black leather. Justin Shandor, named by Graceland as “Worlds Ultimate Elvis” transcends the word tribute as he recreates the Aloha in Hawaii experience with the voice, the moves and the shy but charming banter. Don’t miss this ultimate Elvis experience.
The Great Gig In The Sky Pink Floyd celebration, comes to Wenty Leagues for the first time to perform classic Pink Floyd gems from The Wall, Wish You Were Here and Dark Side Of The Moon. The superb 11-piece band led by guitarist Joseph Calderazzo and featuring vocalists Hugh Wilson (Lenny Kravitz Band) Frank Lakoudis & Spencer Jones (The Voice) have forged a reputation for breathtaking moments and stunning interpretations. Sub Clubs CRICKET CLUB Registrations were open for the month of July and we were overwhelmed with the response! Over 200 juniors registered and we are still fielding calls from parents wanting to enrol their kids despite all our teams being completely full. We have 10 senior teams, with 3 teams coming from other clubs, a sure sign that we are doing something right. The senior teams have begun training despite games not scheduled to start until September, and good numbers are turning up. With this level of enthusiasm, hopefully we will win at least a couple of premierships. We have 23 junior teams who have been graded so players are put into teams where their skills are able to be developed and built on. However, we are still looking for a couple of coaches for some of the teams but hopefully all teams will be fully sorted before games start in September. Our Woolworths In2Cricket will start in October and at the time of writing we have not yet opened registrations for that. The committee graciously give their time to teach 6-9 year olds necessary skills of fielding, batting and bowling in these sessions and kids gain confidence and learn the elements of regular cricket before they progress to under 10 teams. Thank you to the committee for their time and hard work to get so many registrations sorted so efficiently. Until next time, enjoy the cricket! Juanita Di Angelo Club Secretary
DART CLUB The Sydney western suburbs winter comp is well underway with Wenty teams performing very well in all divisions. Our Monday Night men’s division 1 team is leading their competition as is one of our Wednesday night mixed teams who are also leading their division. Our Monday night division two team is also going well sitting in third spot on the table. Our Friday night social events are also going well, regularly attracting over 20 players. You can join us any Friday night in the Magpie Bar. It doesn’t matter of you haven’t played before, there are many players happy to provide advice and help new players to enjoy not only the game of darts but the social aspects too. Our Club championships results are as follows: Darts Club Handicap Singles. Winner was Mick Carthy. Runner up was Andriy Chernysh Club Championship Singles. Men’s winner was Mick Carthy. Runner up was Steve Gumbleton. Ladies Winner was Donna Carthy and runner up was Michele Blommestein Club Championship Doubles. Men’s winners were Steve Gumbleton and Malcom Fleming. WENTYLEAGUES.COM.AU
Runners up were Andriy Chernysh and Tony Warne.
We will make sure you get a game
On the day Steve Gumbleton also threw a 180.
You may get a game with Ray
Ladies Winners were Andrea Hendley and Kim Rousell. Runners up were Lisa Cobb and Linda Swan. Congratulations to all those players, especially Donna and Mick who took out both the women’s and men’s singles titles. Upcoming events include our second Dan Cross Money Competition which will be held on Sunday October 20. Entry fee is Ten Dollars. This popular event is played as a drawn doubles, highest to lowest handicap under social darts rules so anyone can win. It’s a great fun event. Our Memorial Day event will be held on Sunday November ten. The Darts Club Presentation night will be held on Saturday 30th November. Please see Roz for tickets. David Harrison President
DOMINOES Some very sad news for this report. One of nature’s gentlemen, Alan Alderman has passed away. It seems only a few weeks ago that I was playing with Alan. Alan lost a battle with brain cancer that appeared to be sudden. The high regard that Alan had was evidenced by a packed church at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church Wentworthville on 17 July. From everyone at the Dominoes Club deepest sympathy to his family. Alan will be missed. The Dominoes Club plays each Thursday at 7.30pm in the Magpie area. It costs $3 to play and registration is required by 7.15pm as it takes 15 minutes to organize the game. There is a draw for partners each night. The games are played over 5 sets and the set is completed when one team has won 5 games. Whoever wins the most games on the night is the winner. In the case of ties the winner is whoever lost the least games. If still no outright winner there is a countback from the fifth set. There are annual championships and the Dominoes Club puts on a dinner for the presentation to the various championship winners. There are championships for men’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles, men’s singles and women’s singles. The game is block dominoes and is easy to play but there is strategy and skill involved. Any member of the Leagues Club is eligible to play. Come along and have a game. It is very easy to learn the basics. Prizes each night are $20 first, $10 second and $5 third. Most games involve two pairs competing against each other. If the total number of players is odd, and there are a lot of odd players, there may be a singles game. There is often a lot of dabba dabba dos. Not at the moment as Winston Tattersall is in Pommieland for several months. Come along and give us your name 28

EUCHRE The Euchre Club plays each Wednesday near the TAB whilst the renovations are in progress commencing 7.30pm. Sixteen games are played, with a break after 8 games and cash prizes & club vouchers for first, second and third. It costs $3 to play each night plus a $3 annual membership fee. There are prizes for the best aggregate each seven weeks with six aggregates per year. There is also a prize for the best annual aggregate over forty-two weeks. Any player lucky enough to win eight or more games in a row on any night also receives a small prize. On the social side there is a Christmas dinner. New players are always welcome. You do not need to be an expert player to participate and you will find there is a range of ability amongst the players. You start with a partner and change partner after each game. Changing partners is fun. Like any endeavour, ability improves with practice. OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 19
Lessons can be arranged for those unsure of how to play or who wish to improve. If you have never played, we can teach you. The third aggregate for 2019 was won by Jolly Judy Byrnes with 66 points and runner up was the reticent Col Levingston on 61 points.
SUB CLUBS PROMOTION
For the months of May to early August only one club trip occurred and the members were not happy, but that’s the inclement weather effect. The June trip went ahead with a full boat of eager fishing enthusiasts. The weather was kind for June even though the seas were a little rough as we headed out of Kiama Harbour, we reached our first drop site about 20 fathoms deep. By this time the seas became calmer with the boat just moving with a little swell, which meant the fishermen were able to hold bottom. Moving out to 65 fathoms as our next drop point, the weather was still good. We were able to catch some decent fish but unfortunately the number of keepers was low. Still a good day out with a small but reasonable catch this consisted of: •
10 Morwong
•
2 Snapper
•
3 Flathead
•
12 Pig Fish
The biggest bag went to Joe Romcek with 5.1 kg and the biggest fish went to Richard Jodko with a Morwong weighing in at 1.98 kg, a good size. With the trips for July and August cancelled this only left the friendly Fish-off with Blacktown Workers Club in July. It was Blacktown Workers Club turn to host; we went in their charter boat the Putney Star. Here we fielded our top five fishermen based on point scored during the year and there availability, they were: Frank Rapa, Charlie Harb, Joe Romcek, George Schembri and Michael Nash. The catch consisted of: 33 Morwong •
1 Snapper
•
2 Flathead
•
3 Leather jacket
Jolly Judy Byrnes almost had a clean sweep on July 31 winning 15 games. Boy that girl can play.
•
1 Pig Fish
•
1 Pearl Perch
The interclub team, after round 14, is running seventh and struggling to make the semis.
The biggest bag went to John Cassar of Blacktown Workers Club with 8.84 kg and the biggest fish again went to John Cassar with a Pearl Perch weighing in at 1.55 kg. Blacktown Workers Club won the day, the first time in a long time. Our fishermen were eager to win the trophy back next year.
The fourth aggregate for 2019 was won by Jolly Judy Byrnes with 66 points and runner up was the quiet Ray Gorbatenko on 59 points.
Around the traps. Our favourite pom (now that Dennis Williams has left) Ron Betteridge achieved the remarkable feat of three successive lone hands to win a game in three hands whilst playing at Merrylands in July. Hard to believe but I even saw him crack a smile. Have you heard: What is the difference between a man arguing with his wife and a man playing Euchre? The man playing euchre has a chance to win. Colin Manton Secretary
FISHING Since the last report we had four trips scheduled as well as the annual friendly Fishoff with Blacktown Workers Fishing Club. Of the four scheduled trips three were cancelled by the boat skipper due to bad weather and rough seas. Like always safety first!
WENTYLEAGUES.COM.AU
Trips are scheduled for September through to the end of the year. We also have our second small boats weekend scheduled in November. A list of the pending fishing trips is in the gaming area for all to see. If you are interested in joining the fishing club or would just like to know more please contact a committee member. Monthly meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month commencing 6:30pm. Till next tide Phil Nash Publicity Officer

GOLF On the 11/08/2019 we had our return challenge against Gosford RSL at Penrith Golf club and in conjunction this day was for the Charity of the Jarrod Lyle Children with Cancer which was organised by one of our own members namely Lisa Jade. On this day Lisa handed out a leaflet to all players showing fines for any indiscretions on the Golf course with fines to be paid on the day. This was a fun day between the clubs with all money raised going to this worthy charity, players could only be fined a maximum of $20 each, also thanks to the many members of the Golf club who donated prizes to our raffle which was drawn at the club after the game, special thanks to Board member Rob Willis who sold the tickets for this raffle and also conducted the draw. Total money raised on this day was $1,000. Lastly the result of the challenge saw Wenty Leagues defeat Gosford RSL by 280pts to 210pts thus winning the shield back. Winners for Wenty Leagues on this day were Jim Clarke, Nathan Cook, Glen (General) Grant, Danny Chaiban, Dominic Scali, and Norm Hindy. Our Clubman of the Year up to now shows Nathan Cook leading on 155pts from Ryan Payne on 144pts with Charlie Ghaleb 3rd with 121pts. Our Winter ambrose was played at Fox Hills with the winners being Ryan Payne, Nathan Cook, Dominic Scali and Alan Thompson with a score of 53 and 5/8 with runner ups being Jim Clarke, Frank Soballa Leon Plotkans and Richard Clarke with a score of 57 and ½. Ron Bell claimed one of our jackpot holes with a great shot of 53cms winning $228. Welcome to new member Charlie Vella. The doubles Matchplay final was won by Ryan Payne and Nathan Cook defeating Mark O’Brien and Rob Trent 3 and 2. Special mention goes to Nathan Cook who achieved every golfers dream of getting a hole in one when he aced the 5th at Cumberland a shot of 153 metres but alas it wasn’t a jackpot hole. times throughout the match with both players fighting hard to win their first ever club singles title. In the end it was, Whittingham, who was slightly more consistent over the last few ends that help clinch the title. Trent now represents the club in the Zone 10 Champion of Champion singles event to be played at Wenty Leagues starting Saturday 31st August. In late July we had the NSW State Pennant Finals across the state for grades 1 to 7. This year, Wenty qualified in two grades, being the blue-ribbon grade 1 and also grade 5. Last year, the 1s missed out by half a point to qualify for the State Playoffs and they were determined to improve this year and make the Metro top 6 to head to State.
With the influx of five new players, including recently retired Aussie stars, Brett Wilkie and Senior belts Anthony Kiepe from the Gold Coast as the 8.35pm to 9.45pm clubs two allowable ‘marquee’ players, the For all enquiries please email wlcgoshinjujitsu@ Wenty ‘Magpies’ went to another level in the gmail.com initial Metro Cup rounds, claiming second spot and thereby securing a trip to Forster for the Amanda Seck State finals. Having been promoted up from grade 6 after a INDOOR BOWLS Our drawn mixed pairs played on June 12th was great year last year where they made the state finals, the 5s thought it would be very tough won by Barrie Craig and Judith Norgrove and to win the Zone 10 flag once again, with largely the runner’s up were Monika Korn and Frod the same personnel. Amazingly, the 5s held tough and found that extra gear to not only go through the home & away portion of the season undefeated. From there, they then had to endure a full weekend of Zone playoffs against the other five qualifiers. All games were knock-out with no room for any slip-ups. And win they did in a convincing fashion knocking over several more so-called fancied opponents on the way through. That was 14 wins in a row!
Both the 1s & 5s put in good performances at the state playoffs, but both sides were knocked out at the quarter-final stage. Grade 1 knocked over eventual state runners up, Taren Point, convincingly in round 1 by over 20 shots to get off to a great start. Unfortunately, it was eventual champions, Cabramatta, that flexed their muscle against our boys in the quarter-final winning convincingly. Similarly, the 5s went down in the quarters to Batlow who were then narrowly defeated in their respective final. All the players that competed in the state playoffs would like to thank President, John Sunderland, and the Committee for their great personal support at the playoffs. Also, to Wenty Leagues President, Ian McCann, and his fellow Board members, Adam Cromack, Justin Isaacs and Rob Willis who were able to be there to support both grades throughout the weekend, a huge thank you too.

that up in mid-August by claiming the Zone Senior Singles title as well. If all that wasn’t enough, Jeff was selected in the NSW State Senior side to play the nationals later this year. Gallagher has been on the State Selectors radar for over 12 months, but they had to wait until his last birthday, where he ticked over the 60-year mark to qualify for the State Seniors state selected side and associated events. Jeff has hit the ground running, solidifying his spot with these top victories and now gearing up for the NSW State Senior Playoffs for the singles and pairs (with Mark ‘Scruffy’ Barton) to be played at Ettalong BC on the Central Coast. Congratulations also to our Wenty Leagues members, Daniel Baitieri, for making the semi-final of the Zone 10 State Reserve Singles and also Mohan Lal who was defeated by Jeff Gallagher in the semi of the Zone Senior State Singles. In the recent Zone 10 Reserve State Pairs, it was a narrow runner up to Graham Richards and Richard Hickey who went down to a team from North Ryde RSL – a great performance by all. Wenty Leagues recently hosted the Zone 10 finals of the Midweek Pennant covering three grades, A, B and C grade. It was a top day at the club with good crowds there to support our C grade ‘Wenty White’ side who qualified for the semi-finals. The boys won their semi but were then faced with overwhelming favourites, NBC Sports, who after a slow start, proved too good on the day and claimed the C grade midweek pennant title. Wednesday night Twilight Bowls is back on the agenda again after a short break for Origin footy and some colder weather. Wednesday Twilight bowls starts at 5.30pm with names by 5pm. If you’re a social member of Wenty Leagues or someone who is looking to ‘dip their toe’ in the water, then Wednesday nights are a great place to start. It was another top club victory a few Sunday’s ago when 12 of our selected members headed over to Guildford Bowling Club to claim the annual Smith/Townsend trophy. The annual event is a challenge title between four clubs; the other three including Guildford, Merrylands RSL and Merrylands Bowling Clubs. Well done to our boys for wrestling the trophy back into our hands. The Club Triples Championship is also down the final which will be played very soon. We wish the following finalists’ good luck and good bowling in the final: John French, Steve Baldwin, Shane Clarke vs Peter McGill, Mohan Lal, Troy Rodgers.
Long time popular member and Bowls Secretary, Jeff Gallagher, has had a fairy-tale ride on the bowling green in recent months.
In other recently completed club championships, it was a victory to Graham Richards and Richard Hickey in the Minor Pairs Championship over David Campbell and Peter Gordon. In the Major Pairs, it was a win to Mark Barton and Cameron Curtis over Jeff Gallagher and Brendan Conway.
Not only did he win the recent Zone 10 Senior State Pairs with Mark Barton, but he backed

It was in 1981 when Wenty joined Quinlan Shield which involved 4 sports – Snooker, Darts, Table Tennis and Indoor Bowls. Over the years it has slipped from 16 Clubs down to 3. It was not feasible to compete as it was virtually a semi-final every week, so the decision was made to close the Association down as it had not been played since 2016.
