PRESIDENT’S REPORT CEO’S REPORT charities and organisations. Funded by local clubs and administered by Cumberland Council, the ClubGRANTS scheme is designed to assist and promote the local community priorities, namely community welfare and social services, community development, health services and employment assistance activities.

Dear Members It’s very exciting to see that the first stage of our redevelopment has commenced. You may have noticed the progress made in the construction of our undercover bowling green, which will feature a woven synthetic surface and a structural steel and membrane roof – providing ample playing space for all weather conditions. The Smith Street exit driveway has now been closed to accommodate these works, with traffic redirected through Mack Street. While these changes may take some time to get used to, we hope our members can appreciate the careful efforts made to minimise disruption while we work at continuing to provide members and guest parking and access to the club, as well as creating a community-focused venue. Applications for the 2017 ClubGRANTS scheme open this month and we welcome proposals for funding from all local notfor-profit community groups,

In 2016, Wenty Leagues was the largest contributor in Holroyd with well over $1 million donated to community projects – we’re very excited to see what initiatives we can assist in 2017. If you require assistance with your application, you are welcome to attend the workshops held at Wenty Leagues on the 12th and 19th April. I would like to remind all Members that the 2017 AGM will be held in the Starlight Room on Sunday 28th May. We look forward to updating you on the future development plans for the Club and delivering the strong 2016 financial results. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow board members for all their hard work and support over the last two years. Without their combined efforts, this result and the ongoing works would not be possible. I look forward to working with them all well into the future. On behalf of the Board I wish everyone a Happy Easter, and to all of our Mums, a Happy Mother’s Day.

Ian McCann President

Dear Members It has been great to see the Club vibrant and lively with activity this early in the year. Congratulations to the winners of our first major promotion of 2017 - the Cash and Car Bonanza. There were many entries into the final draw, and I hope the members who took home the Toyota 86GTS, Toyota Rav4 GXL2WD and shares in $21,000 cash are enjoying their prizes. A big thanks to everyone who joined the 2GB Continuous Call Team live broadcast from the Magpie Bar in February. The whole 2GB team noted it as one of their best outdoor broadcasts, with a very lively and entertaining crowd. The Magpie Bar will be showing NRL games live all season. Each Friday night, members also have the chance to win corporate box tickets to an Eels home game, so make sure you swipe at the kiosk and place your ticket in the barrel on the bar to go into the draw.

Easter is, once again, set to be a great celebration at Wenty Leagues. With a jumbo Easter egg raffle, a fresh seafood raffle and plenty of opportunities to meet the Easter bunny – there’s sure to be something for everyone. Much like Easter, Mother’s Day at the Club will provide our members with a variety of ways to celebrate Mum. Lawsons Bistro will offer a full buffet breakfast, the Wenty Café menu includes an indulgent breakfast platter for two, the Jasmine Restaurant will offer a set banquet menu and Lucido Italian Restaurant will host our Jack Sharp Magic Shows. I’d like to wish everyone a happy and safe Easter, and a very Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums.

Even though I write the journal copy the dreaded air swing club claimed its final victim for 2016, namely myself after members complained they didn’t see my name in last journal.

Winner: Barbara Hill

Our C.O.W. Final was played in December with Frank Soballa defeating Mark O’Brien on the 19th hole which is now 2 years in a row, seems like Frank loves match play. Doug Hall Memorial Day was played at Penrith with great prizes donated by Gary Waghorne, Bernie Ambrose and Mavis Hall, with the winner being Joe Cannon. Good to see Lisa Jade once again winning the Guzzlers Cup at Springwood, it would be nice to see more females playing Golf with us - check website for more details.

Barbara Mulholland

Captain vs Presidents day was played with President Alan letting Captain Tosca pick his side first, but it still didn’t help as Presidents side proved too strong (now 5 years in a row). Our clubman of the year was won by Gary Waghorne with ‘Professor Mumbles’ Jeff Munday making a late charge for 2nd. At the Sub Committee dinner, Alan Thompson won the Unsung Hero award for 2016. The Guzzler of Guzzlers was played and the winner was popular Director Rob Willis who is now a regular golfer. Our 1st Championship, namely the doubles match play, played off handicap was won by Frank Soballa and Rob Willis beating Gary Waghorne and Rob Trent in the final. No air swings so far for 2017! Come on, for an air swing your name goes in the journal. Our jackpot holes are getting bigger with one standing at over $800, while the other is $300. On the 26/02/17 we played Gosford at Penrith with torrential rain right up to hit-off with low numbers for both clubs: Wenty having 11 and Gosford with 9 players. Wenty retained the shield by 204pts to 202pts, with Gosford still trying to locate shield. Our next Championships is the Stableford championships over 4 rounds starting on the 23/04. INDOOR BOWLS Missed last journal due to illness, so would belatedly like to welcome everyone back for the 2017 season. Our mixed fours was to be played on February 12th, but was cancelled due to lack of players. Hopefully things will be righter for the mixed threes, to be played on March 15th. Results for our overall bowls winners for 2016 are: Mixed Fours Winners: David Campbell, June Davis, Neville Saliba and Robert Jones Runners up: Ronda May, Hermann Mair, Fred Thompson and Jacquie Dummitt Mixed Threes Winners: Barbara Hill, Clare Woodley and John Chen Runners up: Zoe Mauro, Marie O’Brien and Barrie Craig Mixed Pairs Winners: Ronda May and Doreen Anderson Runners up: Davis Campbell and Clare Woodley

LADIES BOWLS With Pennants just underway and the Major Singles almost finished, we all should be getting very excited about the bowling year ahead.

We had a wonderful year, and congratulations to all players. Happy bowling!

We have had some great games during the Major Singles, and now it has come down to Betty and Sonia playing off in the final. What a great game this will be! It will be played after the Pennants has finished, good luck to both of you.

Don’t forget to get your teams together for the Fours Carnival, to be held on the 1st May.

DISTRICT RUGBY LEAGUE The waiting is over and after a torrid preseason, the competitions commenced on 4th March with three homes games at Ringrose Park. Despite constant rain throughout the week which wreaked havoc on training schedules, the playing surface was sensational but unfortunately, the results were not and at the end of the day Wenty had lost all three games. The ISP were opposed to a very strong North Sydney Bears outfit that on the day appeared more committed and out-enthused our combination. Although well behind in the last 10 minutes, Wenty scored a couple of tries. With 2 minutes to go, we were trailing 26-24 but on receiving from the kick off, were unable to gain any advantage turned over on the 6th tackle ultimately allowing Norths to score in the last second to win 32-24. Coach Nathan Cayless has a lot to work with, and when the combinations click this will be a very good team. RMC came up against a much-improved Hills District side that had built up a powerful roster in the off season. Although starting reasonably well and staying in touch with the “Bulls” early in the game, our new combinations were a bit rusty and failed to take the chances that presented and ultimately paid the price, succumbing 18-8. Although disappointed with the loss, Coach Chris Yates is expecting plenty of improvement in upcoming games. All information re WDRLFC draws for 2017 can be found on our website www.wentymagpies.com.au. You can become a WDRLFC member by joining online or at the can bar on game days. Joining fee is $20, which includes entry to all Wenty home games and a Wenty cap - which in itself is great value. Ron Bottle Secretary

New students are accepted weeks 1 & 2 of every term.

Yours in Bowls,

On Sunday 12th February, we hosted the annual Western Metropolitan Carnival and came away with some very pleasing results. Howard Ambler finished a very creditable third place in the over 80 years 30 metres freestyle, Jessie Seaborn came third in the ladies open 30 metres freestyle, and also third in her 30 metres freestyle behind Verity Ambler – who won the event in convincing style. President Tom Lamont teamed up with Howard Ambler in the brace relay to storm home in second place, only 3/100 of a second behind the winners. Wenty then swam well to run second in the 10x50 metres relay. The feature event was the Charles Higgins trophy, raced over a combined team 30 metres/50 metres – and we won it convincingly over the other seven clubs competing. All in all, a very good day, but from our club’s point of view the big winners were the Ambler family. Howard and his two granddaughters Kate and Verity all put in great swims individually and as very important members of our relay squad. Finally, a huge apology to all our swimmers for omitting to report their big win in the 10x50 metres relay at the Castle Hills carnival held in October 2016. Sorry guys! Any more memory lapses and I will hand in my starter’s whistle. John McCann Publicity Officer
