PRESIDENT’S REPORT CEO’S REPORT

Dear Members

Dear Members

I would like to congratulate all my fellow board members for being elected unopposed, which is a great show of support and endorsement from the members. I look forward to working with you over the next two (2) years. The faith entrusted in us by Members is valued and we will continue to deliver on some of the biggest changes in the club’s history. Our Master Plan will see $90 million invested in to the club over the next few years. The scope of the work includes necessary major infrastructural improvements, the introduction of new offerings and the expansion and diversification of existing facilities. These enhancements will sustainably ensure that Wenty Leagues’ Members will be able to enjoy the club for the long-term.

I ask our Members to join us, as we undertake this next stage of growth for the community and for the future. The development is planned to be strategically staged and carefully delivered to minimise disruption to club trade and operations during this time. I invite you to follow the progress of our Master Plan via the in-club display or our club website or Facebook page.

Ian McCann President

The Master Plan is an exciting prospect for the club and due to recent years of steady growth and profitability, the club is positioned favourably for the redevelopment works. I look forward to working closely with the management team and staff to deliver the Board’s vision for the future of Wenty Leagues. Members will be spoilt for choice with new menus being launched club-wide this June. Lawsons Bistro, Lucido Italian Restaurant and Wenty Café will all be offering new dishes for you to indulge, some of which are featured in this Journal. Full menus are available on our club website. We will be hosting our annual Magpies Family Fun Day on Sunday 30 July.

Entry is free with three games of footy, rides, a petting zoo and food for the whole family to enjoy. It is always a wonderful day out and I encourage you to come along to cheer on the Magpies. A spectacular line-up of worldclass international acts, including hit tributes to Willie Nelson, John Denver and Johnny Cash and homegrown Aussie talent, including Marina Prior, David Hobson and Glenn Shorrock will be in the Starlight Room during June and July. I look forward to seeing you around the club.

COMMUNITY

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES The team from Wenty Leagues was thrilled to be able to help out at Ronald McDonald House earlier this month, when they cooked and served dinner to the children and families staying at the house. Chefs Jarod and Luke cooked up a delicious Wenty special of Butter Chicken and Butter vegetables that was a hit with everyone. Marketing Manager, Gina Skinner who also attended, said she and her co-workers were humbled by the experience. “These families are going through an emotionally tough time, so being able to make their stay at the house a little easier was really rewarding.”

HELPING THE NEEDY – PARRAMATTA MISSION On Friday 10 March our ‘Community Crew’ prepared, cooked and served meals to over 130 people in need through Parramatta Mission’s Meals Plus outreach program. While our volunteer work that day helped many, there are still a countless number who suffer from hunger, homelessness and mental illness. For more information about volunteering with Parramatta Mission visit www.parramattamission.org.au/volunteer.

Wenty Leagues looks to contribute to the local community through more than just cash donations and so actively seeks out opportunities to make a real difference. The Meals from the Heart program at Ronald McDonald House is one of those special opportunities, where the club can contribute through what they do best – great food and a friendly smile.

SPONSORSHIP OF SYDNEY METRO BLUES Wenty Leagues is proud to be a sponsor for more than 15 years of the Sydney Metro Blues. Our sponsorship of $20,000 will help fund training facilities, assist players with their registration and also their transport and logistics of attending games all over Australia.

Sub Clubs GOLF CLUB Our Summer Ambrose was won by the team of Mark O’Brien, Bernie Ambrose, Glen (General) Grant and Graham Kenyon, with runner’s up being Gary Waghorne, Billy Hilder, Rob Willis and Lisa Jade. We then played the Memorial Cup in grades with A Grade being won by Gary Waghorne from Jim Clarke, B Grade winner Glen (General) Grant from Rei Reihana with C Grade won by Rob Willis from Brian Thow. One of our Jackpot holes was won at Leura by Ray Hoole with a shot of 84cm which netted him a cool $936. Rob Willis, one of the Club’s Directors, has indicated to anyone who will listen that his handicap will be down to 20 by the end of the year, (currently 26). I will keep you informed and has said he will buy me a beer if he doesn’t achieve this (but if he does, I’ll buy him the beer). All the golfers this year have had no air swings so far which is most disappointing. Come on, try harder! Our stableford championships are on with one round remaining sees Frank Soballa leading A Grade easily with B Grade being fought out by Rei Reihana and Danny Chaiban while in C Grade, Billy Hilder leads from Graham Kenyon. INDOOR BOWLS We have started this month off on a bit of a low, not enough of our players registered for our Mixed Threes’ competition, so it had to be cancelled. Hope things look up from now on. Hope our pairs to be played on June 18 will be better represented. Our AGM in April was well attended. All except two members were returned to the Committee. Carmen and Robert Jones have retired after serving for about fifteen years. The two new members are Joan Ryles and Mary Zammit. Happy Bowling Fay Peter Publicity Officer

LADIES BOWLS What a great start to this year’s competitions. Everyone seems to be getting right into the swing of things and I am sure there is much more to come. The Major Singles have been played. It was a very exciting game to watch. Congratulations to Sonia Baitieri, Winner and Betty Hammond, Runner Up. Sonia will now go on to play The Champion of Champions on the 27 June. We all wish you well Sonia. If anyone would like to go along to support Sonia and be able to watch a great display of bowling, please put your name down on the board. Congratulations to all our Pennant Teams on a great effort this year. The weather was not very kind to us as there were many washed out games and unfinished games that had to be finished at the end. This always makes it very hard. Well done ladies.

The day went well and thanks to all those who made the day a success. Aero Bowls Demonstration is to be held on Friday 19 May. Losses in Rounds 5 to Mounties 18-14 and Round 6 to Wyong 30-12 had coach Cayless looking for answers. He found those answers and commenced a 3-match winning run. Round 7 V Bulldogs 18-12, Round 8 V Penrith 13-12 and Round 9 against a strong Newtown side 20-12 which moved us into the top eight for the first time this season. The team is starting to show what it is capable of. Bureta Faraimo has been chosen in the NSW Residents side, and Marata Niukore Cook Islands. These games are to be played on the Representative weekend. RMC A loss in the first Round was followed by another loss to Blacktown Workers 30-16. In a disjointed Competition, we then had two byes in a row which had Chris Yates and his players all fired up for the round 5 game against Wests Magpies. In a return to the form this team is capable of Wests were clearly outplayed with the Wenty Magpies winning 32-6.

2nd Robert Fletcher and Jan Hornery with 8 games/29

The good form continued with wins in Round 6 V Auburn Warriors 28-12, the strong Mounties side 22-6 and Round 8 V Cabramatta 34-12 making it four on the trot. Unfortunately, another Bye in Round 9. Round 10 we came up against a very competitive Guildford side and although never looking likely to lose, in a tough match, were able to come out on top 18-16. At this stage of the Competition we are now well placed in the top four.

3rd Colin Levingston and Betty Rigby with 8 games/24

QUINLAN SHIELD

The cricket season has come to an end with some mixed emotions!

Still no news as to Quinlan Shield being held again. I will report if any news comes to hand.

We initially had 3 Senior teams and 7 Junior teams that made it through to the Semi Finals. This was a great effort to have 10 out of our 18 teams get through to the Semi Finals. Unfortunately, with all the rain we had in early March, it saw the Semi Finals washed out and only 2 teams went through to the Finals.

State Indoor Bowls

Congratulations to B3 and 11/1 Grey for both making it into the Finals.

Ladies Triples Barbara Hill and Monika Korn were winners.

The Finals were also in doubt all week, but finally went ahead. 11/1 Grey played Baulkham Hills in a hard and exciting game, but unfortunately, they weren’t able to come away with a win. All the boys should be very proud of way they played.

International Test Match Against New Zealand

After finishing Minor Premiers, B3 went on to win their Final against Western Wolves, even after the mix up of grounds and a last minute dash across town to another ground, the boys still held it together to play a fantastic game of cricket. Even though cricket season has finished, there are still a lot of things happening with some of the Junior teams playing Winter Cricket. We wish those teams and players the best of luck. For the players having a break from cricket, don’t worry, it won’t be long and you will be back in your whites for the 2017/18 season! Yours in Cricket, Louise Frendo Cricket Co-ordinator

SWIMMING On Sunday 9 April, we held our presentation Day with Tim Miller winning the biggest swag of trophies – too many to list in this report. Other recipients for awards were Howard Ambler for 30 metres Freestyle Annual Points Score, Kate Eagles and Graham Harvey for the Brace Relay. Darby McLachlan picked up the 30 metres Breast Stroke and recorded a “spot-on” time. Tony Miller won the 25 metres Freestyle and also had a “spot-on”. Trevor Simpson rolled back the years to win the Open Handicap Trophy. Congratulations to all award winners and a big pat on the back to the people who officiated in various positions and to the swimmers who turn up each Sunday morning during our season. Our AGM was held on Sunday 23 April with most of the committee being returned. Michelle Oliver becomes Social Secretary, replacing long serving Margaret Fairbrother who stepped down and is now our Joint Patron with Trevor Simpson. David Finch is our new Vice Captain. At this meeting, there was a proposal to appoint Margaret Fairbrother along with Howard Ambler as Life Members of the Swimming Club. With both these members easily fitting the required criteria, it was unanimously voted in favour of this honour being granted to them. Our next scheduled swim is the Walla Ross on 9 July. Best wishes to Shirley Ambler for her upcoming shoulder operation. Don’t press the clocks so hard! John McCann Publicity Officer

This October, we will be celebrating our 50th year anniversary of the ASPLEY visit; this began in 1968 and is still going strong all these years later. Because of this, we would like anyone who has any ASPLEY memorabilia of their experience of ASPLEY can they contact Sam Gambin on 0410 660 494. The items collected will be on display at our Anniversary Dinner to be held on the 30 September 2017 at the Toongabbie Bowling Club (further information to follow). Our Club has over 40 teams competing in the Parramatta District and NSWRL competitions in 2017. We also have a Junior and Senior TRYTIME team this season, with over 40 players competing in our Special Needs group of players who are having a great time playing Rugby League. We are very grateful to Gillian Webster who has donated a magnificent Silver Cup as a trophy for the Best and Fairest Senior player in TRYTIME. We are also grateful to Trevor and Marie Simpson who have also donated a similar trophy to the winner of the Beat and Fairest Junior TRYTIME player. We would like to thank you all for your wonderful donation for these very special players in our club. Allan McGowan Club Secretary
