the celebrations with a spectacular gala dinner full of laughter and memories shared. Similarly, the Netball Club also hosted a delightful dinner event, which saw members gathering to honour the rich history of the club. In June, your Board of Directors held an intensive full day strategic planning session, where presentations showcased further areas of the club and our facilities that could be further developed for the betterment of our growing membership. We look forward to sharing some of those results and takeaways with members in the not-too-distant future. Stay tuned.
Dear Members,
Heading into the second half of the year, we are transitioning into the exciting months of August and September. Before we delve into the details of what lies ahead, I would love to look back briefly at some key events that took place at our club during June and July.
We had the pleasure of hosting various events, including the remarkable 60th anniversaries of our Netball and Bowling clubs. The Bowling Club celebrated with a weeklong celebration, with 132 teams participating in tournament play and ending
Despite the challenges posed by external factors, I am delighted to share that we continue to move forward with a positive outlook with our financial landscape. Whilst we find ourselves slightly behind the record results achieved in 2022, we are firmly on track to achieve our current year target and another strong performance for Wenty Leagues. Our club’s dedicated staff, loyal members, and supportive community have played a pivotal role in driving our continuing progress and ongoing success.
We know that our staff are a key part of what makes Wenty the hospitality venue of choice for so many, which is why we were so

pleased to apply the Fair Work Commission pay increase to our incredible team. With the continual rising of cost of living expenses, we are happy to further support our Wenty Family.
I would also like to congratulate our entire team for their selfless efforts in supporting local community organisations. In July, we put the call out to staff for donations of pre-loved blankets, warm clothing or winter items for our Parramatta Mission Winter Appeal. We received an amazing response and the donations will make a huge difference to so many vulnerable members of the community.
Once again, our culinary team has crafted an incredible menu of specials to enjoy over the coming months. Whether you are looking for somewhere to celebrate Father’s Day, or looking for your next catch-up location with friends, I invite you to take the opportunity to come in and enjoy an outstanding meal, while you enjoy a relaxing time.
We look forward to seeing yourself, your family and friends in August and September. Hoping your visit will be filled with joy, laughter and cherished moments created right here at Wenty Leagues.

June and July were bustling months at our club, with an influx of school children joining us for school holiday fun. We are delighted to have had the opportunity to host these young minds and create memorable experiences for them. Looking ahead to September, we are eager to continue creating memories, as we have planned a fantastic lineup of activities,
including Cupcake Decorating, Kids Bingo, Face Painting, and more. We can’t wait to see the joy on their faces as they engage in these fun-filled events. Learn more on pages 18 & 19.
Sports enthusiasts and families have been flocking to our venue to cheer on the Matilda’s in their quest for glory at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. We have enjoyed witnessing the team’s progress and are excited to see just how far they can go. Footy finals will also be getting underway in the coming months and we look forward to being the go-to venue to cheer on your team, as we head towards seeing who will take out the premiership for 2023. It’s moments like these that truly unite us as a community, and we are proud to provide a space where such moments can be shared and celebrated.
We will also be bringing an abundance of laughter to our Wenty community as we bring the Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase and renowned comedian Jimeoin to our Starlight stage. Along with other talented performers, who will undoubtedly leave our audience in stitches, there are lots of laughs to be had. You can read more about our Starlight shows on pages 24 through to 27.
Our culinary team continues to impress with their creations. This month, our food specials showcase a wide range of cuisines that bring sensational flavours to life. Among the highlights is our Lamb Shank pie, a mouthwatering delicacy that not only tastes incredible but also presents itself as a work of art on your plate. Make sure you don’t miss out on this culinary masterpiece. Take a look at all the specials you will be seeing in the coming months from page 12.
We eagerly anticipate the arrival of Father’s Day, a time to celebrate the special men in our lives. At The Plaza, we will be offering Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, providing families with the perfect setting to create cherished memories while indulging in delicious meals. Additionally, we will have live entertainment throughout the day, along with a special Father’s Day raffle, including a host of exciting prizes up for grabs. Giving young people the keys to independence
YOUTH OFF THE STREETS
Youth unemployment is of significant concern in NSW. In 2021, Western Sydney was home to 39% of NSW’s unemployed young people, according to Youth Action’s ‘Bearing the Brunt’ report. Due to this, Youth of the Streets works to empower at-risk young people to seek work, continue their education, and build life-skills at its independent high schools.
With our support, The Next Steps Transition program and the Mentoring program are essential services that Youth Off The Streets are able to deliver. These programs allow young people to shift smoothly to work and further training, and with Youth Off The Streets’ status as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), it means they can provide a mix of accredited and non-accredited workshops, in disciplines ranging from construction to hospitality.
“It gives young people practice for the skills they’d need to succeed in employment,” says Mikaela, former RTO Manager. “I have a lot of ‘proud mum’ moments when our students score an interview or get a new job.”
Last year, 15 young people embarked on the Next Steps program, with the outcomes highlighting their commitment to improving their lives and breaking away from the cycle of disadvantage. Meanwhile, the Mentoring program matches disadvantaged young people with adult role models, as a 2014 report, entitled ‘The Mentoring Effect’, found those with the guidance of a mentor are more likely to set higher educational goals and demonstrate better community engagement.
While employment skills are vital to personal development, they aren’t the only key skills needed in the path towards personal freedom. For many, attaining a driver’s license is another key step in their journey. This is where the iDrive program comes into play, as the program helps young people accumulate driving hours with a volunteer mentor. So far, 16 young people have participated since the program began in September 2022.
Our contribution also enables Youth Off The Streets to offer young people the Safe Driver Course, as well as financial assistance for driving lessons and licence tests. Chris, an iDrive mentor of four years, has seen first-hand the program’s benefits.
“One young person couldn’t take on a shop-manager role because she couldn’t drive,” he says. “Once she got her licence, she could put her hand up to manage multiple outlets. Her success really put a smile on her face.”
For Chris, the experience is more than just a chance to accumulate driving hours.
“It’s an outlet for the young person to get things off their chest. If they want to open up about issues they’re facing, I’m there for them – to listen without judgement.”
Staff Winter Appeal PARRAMATTA MISSION
With the temperature dropping this winter, the staff rallied together to support one of our long-standing community partners, Parramatta Mission, in their Winter Appeal.
Our staff did not disappoint, blankets and warm clothing were gathered, as staff generously gave away pre-loved items they had cherished for years, alongside brand-new ones. The donation box overflowed with an array of items to help those vulnerable members of our community.
band together and make a difference. The impact of their collective effort has reverberated far beyond the confines of Wenty Leagues, reaching the lives of those most in need.
But the spirit of giving didn’t end there, as non-perishable food items also found their way into the hands of the caring staff. These provisions will help to provide sustenance to those who need it during this winter period and beyond.
The overwhelming response showcased the genuine care and compassion of the Wenty staff. Their unwavering support proved that, even in times of hardship, the community could

Their tenacity and dedication served as inspiration for the club’s aspiring bowlers!!
State Pennant Playoffs | Grade 4 Quarter-finalists
Wenty Leagues’ Grade 4 team delivered a commendable performance in the State Pennant Playoffs, reaching the quarterfinals. While they were eventually defeated by Wingham BC, it is worth noting that Wenty Leagues 4s was the only club to triumph over the eventual State Champions, St Johns Park. This outstanding achievement is a testament to the club’s determination and competitive spirit, which also saw our Grade 1s win their way to Forster and also Grade 6 that competed at Warilla on the South Coast.
Women’s Consistency Singles Championship
The Women’s Consistency Singles Championship witnessed an unforgettable final showdown. Sue Cunningham and Di Worthington engaged in a gripping battle that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. In a nail-biting finish, Sue Cunningham emerged as the winner, edging past Di Worthington with a slender score of 120 to 119. The skill and sportsmanship displayed by both players earned the admiration of their peers.
Women’s Single Gender State Pennants
As August approaches, anticipation grows for the commencement of the Women’s Single Gender State Pennants. Bowlers from Wenty Leagues are gearing up to showcase their prowess and compete against some of the best talent in the state. With their experience and camaraderie, they are ready to take on this challenge head-on in Grades 1, 3 and 4.
Celebrating the Champions of 2022-23 Bowling Season
In early June, Wenty Leagues held its prestigious bowls presentation luncheon to recognise and honour the champions of the 2022-23 season. The respective men’s and women’s Bowlers of the Year’ accolades were bestowed upon Matty Swan and Chrissy Cadman, recognising their consistent excellence and remarkable performances. The club also celebrated the tremendous progress made by John Champion and Sue Cunningham, acknowledging them as the ‘Most Improved Bowlers’ for the year. These exceptional bowlers serve as a source of inspiration for the entire Wenty Leagues community.
Wenty Leagues 60th Anniversary Week of Bowls
A significant milestone for the club, the Wenty Leagues 60th Anniversary Week of Bowls, was a grand celebration of the sport’s rich heritage and the club’s enduring legacy. A whopping 132 teams participated in various competitions throughout the entire week of tournament play, fostering a true sense of community and camaraderie among members and
visitors. Twenty-thousand dollars in prize money was shared over the week. The festivities culminated in a spectacular gala dinner attended by 200 people. The evening was filled with laughter, shared memories, and an overwhelming sense of pride for the club’s accomplishments over the six decades.
Embracing the New Season
As the new season unfolds, the excitement is palpable at Wenty Leagues Bowls Club. The Major Singles Championship for both men and women promises to deliver thrilling encounters and fierce competition. Additionally, the Women’s District Championships, Men’s Zone 10 State Championships, and the Zone 10 Open Midweek Pennant are all set to kick off soon, adding more excitement to the bowls calendar.
In conclusion, Wenty Leagues Bowls Club has once again proven itself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of lawn bowls. The club is well-positioned to create more memorable moments in the 23-24 season. So let the games begin, and may the spirit of sportsmanship, fellowship, and competitive excellence continue to thrive at Wenty Leagues Bowling Club!
Cameron Curtis, Bowls Co-ordinatorCRICKET
Cricket club registrations have just opened, and initial numbers are quite healthy, hopefully we should have around the same number of teams.
We will look to run our popular ‘Cricket Blast’ program for our 6-10 years olds. We had some of our kids attend a training session with Sydney Thunder player Chris Green, which was well received and a fabulous opportunity for the players.
We have 2 changes to our committee with the retirement of Rob Willis, Aaron Martin (VP) and Hubert Jesuratnam (Treasurer). Wish to thank Rob for his efforts for many years at the Cricket Club.
We have been informed that one of our long term senior teams have been filming about the diversity of the Cricket team and how Wenty Leagues have assisted with this, it’s a 5 part series and Kayo and Fox Sports have agreed to play this as part of the upcoming summer Cricket season. Congratulations to all involved and keep an eye out for Park Cricket on your TV’s.
DARTS
It’s been a big couple of months for the Dart Club. Our Division 1 men’s team won the Sydney Western, Monday night competition and our Division 1 Mixed team came runner up in the Wednesday night competition.
Karl Korzuch has played for Wenty for many years and plays in both the men’s and the mixed teams. He has now hit 300 “180’s” in Sydney Western Competitions. Karl is the only player ever to do so.
Andrea Hendley darts have been fantastic of late, and she has just been named to represent New South Wales in the National Championships next month, we wish her well.
Dave Shaw was nominated and accepted as a life member of the Darts Club.

FISHING
The Small Boats weekend 5th, 6th and 7th May at Greenwell Point went ahead, the seas were calm and fishing conditions perfect. All who went enjoyed a great few days catching fish and telling their stories, when they discussed their day over a meal and a drink at the local bowling club.
The trip in May saw a slow day with very high winds out of Kiama. We fished initially at 80 metres with only a few fish being caught due to not being able to hold bottom, even with the regulation one pound sinker. The skipper brought the boat in closer to 50 metres, again only a few fish brought in so we moved to the 40 metre mark. Unfortunately, the conditions were the same, not able to hold bottom, the current was not on the side of the anglers.
We fished until 1:00pm with all bringing home some fish, so overall a good day. The catch consisted of 17 Morwong, 6 Snapper, 6 Leather Jacket, 9 Pig Fish, 1 Maori Wrasse, 5 Sergeant Baker, and 25 Sweep. The biggest fish was a Morwong at 1.06kgs, caught by Fong (Charlie) Looi, the biggest bag went to Anand (Senior) Naidoo with 2.9 kgs, well done boys.
With reduced numbers the June trip still went ahead. The weather was good; the sea was flat and calm meaning we were able to fish at 70 meters. A number of anglers bagged out on Morwongs. This means they caught the maximum allowed of that species.
The catch consisted of 55 Morwong, 24 Snapper, 12 Pig Fish, 2 Flathead, 1 Maori Wrasse, 9 Sergeant Baker and 5 Sweep. A good haul! The biggest fish was a Morwong at 1.15kg caught by Steve Sakaluk and the biggest bag went to Anand (Senior) Naidoo at 10.84kgs.
Fishing is improving with the skipper continuing to take us to all the right drop points where we are all but guaranteed fish. We have a great time on the water, with bait dropped, as we wait anxiously for that bite.
If you are interested or would like to know more about the Wenty Fishing Sub-Club, we meet every second Wednesday at 6pm in the Sports Bar, come along and meet some members.
Till next tide

Welcome once again from the Wenty Leagues Social Golf Club. The weather is getting a bit chilly, but our members are soldiering on and enjoying their golf as usual. Our first COW round was completed at Glenmore Park on 2 April. Sixteen players progressed to the second round which was completed at Penrith on 21 May and we are now down to eight lucky players for our third round, which will take place at Highlands Golf Club in picturesque Mittagong.
Congratulations also to Ryan Payne who won the jackpot hole at Penrith on the third hole. I was in a group with Dominic Scali at Studley Park when a rare event for him occurred, he took a Divot and was over the moon, it was an excellent shot and many more of them to come.
The results for the Leagues Club Cup that was originally scheduled to be played at Camden Lakeside on 30 April, but was rescheduled for Penrith on 21 May due to inclement weather were as follows:
A Grade Winner: Ryan Payne
Runner-up: Charlie Ghaleb
B Grade Winner: Glen Grant
Runner-up: Tim Fuhrmann
C Grade Winner: Troy Tyson
Runner-up: Bernie Ambrose
The Club’s Stableford championship kicked off at Glenmore Park on 4 June and is played over four consecutive rounds. This wrapped up at Studley Park on 25 June with the following results:
A Grade Winner: Charlie Ghaleb
Runner-up: Ryan Payne
B Grade Winner: Danny Chaiban
Runner-up: Tim Fuhrmann
C Grade Winner: Sione Fangupo

SNOOKER & BILLIARDS
The Snooker and Billiards Club (AKA the Snooker Club) has been a Sub-Club of Wenty Leagues Club for many years and we are fortunate to have members from all walks of life.
The Snooker & Billiards Club holds many competitions throughout the year and participates in various competitions with other clubs.
UMPIRING
Blacktown City Netball Association held an 11 week program for beginner umpires. WLNC throughout the program had 7 girls attend. From this program we have had 5 progress into Saturday games. The eagerness of those that attended was great. Each week did consist of learning the game progressively and girls were then able to put this into practise by umpiring our 11 years Development teams.
Elliana Henderson received her Gold badge and Priyanka Murali received her Junior White badge. These accomplishments were done in such little time, well done girls.
Draws and Results can be checked on the PlayHQ website

Crazy Hair & Sock Day
Social snooker competitions are always held every Tuesday Night with a handicap knockout. Entry is $5.00. We commence the shootout at 7.00pm. Vouchers are awarded to the Winner, Runner up, and semifinalists. We encourage all Wenty Leagues Club members who enjoy snooker to play in our social competition.
We no longer hold our Thursday night shoot out competitions because the A and B Grade teams play in our snooker room on that night.
We had our AGM on Monday 6th February 2023; an election for a new committee was held, some current and some new Committee members are now on the new Committee filling all positions.
The Club had a successful year in 2022 and we are looking forward to any challenge in the coming years.
Monday 12th June 2023, we played in the semi-final of the RSL Competition, winning through to the grand final against Guildford at the Guildford Leagues Club.
Monday 19th June 2023, we played the RSL Snooker Championship; we had a victory by winning 3-2.
Sunday 25th June 2023 we have won the RSL Competition 3-0 against Guildford Club.
Monday 26th June 2023, we held our club Billiards championship. The two finalists were Shawli Masudi and Nick Hanlin, Nick was crowned the 2023 Billiards champion.
The “A” Grade team is running 2nd in the Western District Championship
The “B” Grade team has finished 2nd in the Western District Championship
Third Division was equal 1st in the Western District Championship
Second Division was equal 2nd in the Western District Championship
At present we comprise of fifty four (54) financial member, it is low this year probably due to our regular senior members being unable to participate in the same way they once did, we wish them all the best.
We would like to encourage more women to join in and play during our Tuesday night competition, no experience is required as we have club members who are more than happy to offer their courteous knowledge. Arrangements can be made for mutual time, for one on one free training, to be able to one day represent Wenty in Snooker or Billiards events.

Social Day 3.0
WLSC held its Social Day 3.0 on Sunday 4th June at Northmead Squash Courts with 32 players registered. All players enjoyed the competition on court and the social aspect off the court. The “special” handicap system used for our Social Days meant everyone was competitive, even when there was a big difference in their player ratings. We were thrilled to announce the top 3 Prize Winners for Social Day 3.0 were all women. Go Girl Power!

Thanks to John Bennett
Our President, Mr John Bennett announced at the AGM, that he would not seek re-election for a position on the Executive Committee for 2023/24. It was only fitting that Club Vice-Captain & Life Member Wendy Fox was given the honour to present John with a small token of our appreciation for all he has done for WLSC.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank John Bennett for all his hard work, time, dedication, and effort in guiding our Squash Club for the past 4 years. The Club has been very fortunate to have been led by a man with great experience in sports committees and administration. We would all like to wish John all the very best for the future.
Welcome to your Leadership Team for 2023-2024
With John deciding not to stand for a position on the Executive Committee, there was a minor reshuffle required. I was elected Club President and Rob Spooner was elected Vice President. Danny Hedges and Graeme Mitchell were re-elected as Treasurer & Secretary respectively, thus completing a very experienced Committee.
Club Captains Chris Mitrovich & Wendy Fox and team Selector Gillian Kirby were re-elected with 2 new faces appointed to the Selections Committee in Rob Cole and Dave Seguna.
lead an energetic team committed to working hard during this period to ensure we thrive.

Join our great Wenty Leagues Squash Club
Squash is an exciting fast-paced international game for all ages that is great for improving cardio fitness and racquet and ball skills. The age range of current members extends from 20+ to 80 and we have been part of the Wenty Leagues Club community of sports clubs for almost 60 years.
With the Pennant competition restructure in 2023, there’s no better time to join WLSC. It’s now easier to commit with only 10 rounds played per Pennant, less fees per season, 3 finals series per year with new trophies, and improved & more flexible by-laws. We welcome players of all levels from beginners to advanced players, there’s a grade for everyone.
As there are no Squash Courts at Wenty Leagues Club itself, all home matches and internal competition matches are played at Northmead Squash Centre, 201 Windsor Road, Northmead. If you are interested in joining the Squash Club, please contact the secretary, Graeme Mitchell on 0435 837 675 or gamitchell50@gmail.com.

John Musumeci, WLSC PresidentSWIMMING
Members attended the Annual King’s Birthday weekend Legacy Swimming Carnival at Dubbo. This is the biggest Carnival on the Swimming Calendar with 10 Clubs competing. The weekend started with a social bowls game on the Saturday afternoon followed by a get together on Saturday night at the local RSL Club. Sunday morning, we ventured to the Aquatic centre at the RSL for the long-awaited Swim. A most successful weekend was had by the Club, with four Members at Wenty -Ted Jolly, Sean Henly, Tony Miller & Didier Balglobin winning the 4 x 50 metre relay, this known at the “Crocodile Cup” and it’s the most prestigious trophy that we can swim for.
We also had placings by Sean Henly in the Men’s Open event, and 3rd placing in 4 x 25 metre medley relay.
We face some interesting challenges over the next few years, especially those surrounding squash participation rates. However, I
The weekend is held to raise funds for Dubbo Legacy, due to the support of the clubs attending, in excesses of $10,000 was raised.
We are enjoying the rest over the winter months, and looking forward
to recommencing to Wentworthville pools the Sunday following the long weekend in October.
John Mccann, Publicity OfficerWDRLFC Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership & Ron Massey Cup
With 2 rounds remaining of normal competition, the Ron Massey team are sitting outright 3rd and assured of a semi final birth for 2023. Results have been slightly indifferent with 3 wins, 2 loses, a draw and a bye since round 9, with last Saturday seeing the club play its last home game for the season. We also celebrated ‘Back to Wenty’ day, which gave us the opportunity to catch up with ex-members from the past, including players, staff and committee members. Although not the result we wanted, a great day was had from all involved and so pleasing to see past and present players mixing together in the dressing room after the game. This will now hopefully become an annual event.
This week the Ron Massey squad travel to Fiji to take on the Silktails which will no doubt be a tough encounter. Although, as mentioned previously, we are destined for semi final football a win will assure us of a top 3 spot.
All information relating to the WDRLFC including complete draws for the Harvey Norman Women’s and Ron Massey Cup please visit:www.wentymagpies.com.au.
Martin De Bono, SecretaryWUJRLFC Junior Rugby League
As we are now mid way in the season, we can report that all our non competition sides have been having a great time learning the skills of Rugby League.
Our under 6s have started the season playing in the tag format while our under 7s have done 6 weeks of tag while learning tackling at training, now they have moved into tackling each week and have been having a great time.
Our under 9 Div 1 side coached by Abdul, were invited to the Paea Cup knockout with the best 32 sides in the state. The knockout was played over 2 days and the final result was our under 9-1 were Paea Cup champions, winning their final 20-12 over Cabramatta, signs are looking good for the future.
Our Competition teams this year have been progressing with the joint competitions with Canterbury. Competition is tough with a lot of close games, as we report we are looking very strong in all age groups with most teams sitting in the top 2 of each comp.
Our female teams are getting stronger and stronger with our under 14s girls sitting in 2nd place while our Open Women are sitting in 1st place, these competitions are based across all of Sydney, with teams from Manly, North Sydney, South Sydney and Penrith Districts.
Our A-grade team have joined up with Manly and North Sydney Districts, due to lack of teams. They have been strong with them sitting in 2nd after their first lost, but they will continue to work hard each week.
Sydney Shield have had a rough start, with getting 4 wins in a row then have been hit with a lot of injuries and players moving up the grades, they sit in 6 position as we report and hopefully can get a couple more players back and get more wins before the finals.
