Dear Members,
As we step into October and embrace the warmer weather, I would love to share some highlights we have experienced over the past months.

I want to express my gratitude to each and every one of you for your ongoing support. Your dedication and loyalty are the foundation of our club's success, and together, we will continue to thrive and make a positive impact in our community.

Dear Members,
Heading into the warmer month of October, I am delighted to bring you some exciting updates from your club. It's been an eventful quarter, and we have some great news to share.
First and foremost, we have decided to transition our journal from a bi-monthly publication to a quarterly magazine. This shift allows us to deliver more comprehensive and in-depth content, ensuring that you receive the most value from each issue. We believe that this change will better serve your interests and keep you well-informed about all the latest
Now, with preparations underway for Spring Carnival, we eagerly anticipate welcoming our members to the club to witness the race that stops the nation, Melbourne Cup, along with all your live racing action showing in Magpie Bar, your home of sports. It's a time when our community comes together to celebrate tradition, camaraderie, and the excitement of horse racing. Read up on everything you can expect on Melbourne Cup Day on page 22.
If horse racing isn’t your cup of tea, there’s still something for every sporting taste bud. Bathurst Car Racing, one of the most
adrenaline-charged motorsport events in the world, is on the horizon. Cricket fans can gear up for an extravaganza of boundaries, wickets, and breathtaking catches as teams from across the globe battle it out for cricketing supremacy in the ICC Cricket World Cup. Or for those who follow American sports, the NFL and basketball will be hitting our screens.
Our entertainment lineup for the month is also looking to add even more excitement to your calendar. Get ready to laugh out loud as we welcome the hilarious comedian, Lawrence Mooney, to our stage. With his sharp wit and comedic genius, Lawrence is sure to leave you in stitches and create unforgettable memories. Shortly after, we're turning up the volume with The Vallies, an all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza featuring a sensational vocal group and rounding out the month we have Jeremy Spoke, the Pearl Jam Tribute Show. Find out more about our entertainment lineup on pages 18 & 19.
The team and I are looking forward to the final months of the year, as we head into the festive season and look forward to welcoming you on your next visit. See you at Wenty!

Nurturing the Families of Premature Newborns
MIRACLE BABIES
Miracle Babies is a phenomenal organisation that offers support to families during one of the most challenging times in their lives. For parents who have a premature or sick newborn, the support given to them by Miracle Babies can be a life changer.
Wenty Leagues is honoured to support Miracle Babies and their NurtureGroup program, a free support group for families that have had a baby born prematurely or suffering from a form of illness, facilitated at Westmead Hospital.
In August, some of our team were able to hear firsthand the experiences that families have had with the program during a supporter ‘thank you’ morning tea. One point that was highlighted during the event was the importance of the NurtureGroup, in not only offering support, but also building connections and networks with other families who are facing the same difficulties.

VARIETY BASH
Variety’s B to B Bash is an incredible celebration of one years worth of fundraising with all proceeds going to Variety, the Children’s Charity.
Wenty Leagues was proud to support Roy and his team, Car #20, in the Variety B to B Bash. The participants made their way from Bathurst in New South Wales all the way to Batavia Coast in Geraldton, Western Australia, in a trip that took them over 4 states and 6,000km!
The participants of the Bash made 11 stops along the way – including stops to local schools, where they provided much needed donations and also got to see firsthand the amazing impact their fundraising efforts have had.
Creating Better Access with the Installation of AED's
HEART OF THE NATION & CUMBERLAND CITY COUNCIL
Greg Page is famously known as being the original yellow wiggle. After collapsing during a Wiggles show in 2020 at Castle Hill RSL and suffering a cardiac arrest, Greg’s life was able to be saved through the quick actions of the people around him, combined with the use of an onsite Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). After this incident, Greg Page founded ‘Heart of the Nation’, becoming an advocate for AEDs and ensuring that all members of the community have access to an AED in the case of a cardiac arrest. Having access to the devices, in the instance of a cardiac arrest, can increase the rate of survival from 10% to 70%. Heart of the Nation also provides FREE training courses to members of the community to ensure as many people as possible are aware of and can operate the units.
Wenty Leagues was thrilled to collaborate with Heart of the Nation and Cumberland City Council to install two AEDs in local community locations of Wentworthville Community Centre and Roberta Street Park, Greystanes.
With these latest two installed units, there are now 24 units installed in community spaces in the Cumberland LGA.
Wenty Leagues contributes over $600,000 to the local community
In 2023, Wenty Leagues has contributed cash and in-kind donations to ClubGRANTS category 1 recipients totalling over $600,000. We are delighted to support organisations that complete projects with positive impacts for members of our local community. The following organisations have been funded in 2023.
Wenty Leagues is proud to continue to support organisations in 2023 as part of the ClubGRANTS scheme. In total for category 1 & 2, Wenty Leagues has contributed $2.4m in funding to local organisations, charities, schools, and sporting organisations to assist these groups with providing much needed support and programs to many individuals and groups within our community.
The funded organisations provide programs to the community in the category of welfare and social services, community development, community health services, education, employment, and domestic and family violence. These programs are necessary for many members of our community in supporting them and improving daily life.
Thank you for your generosity and for joining Learning Links’ mission to provide children and young people who have difficulties learning with the skills, services and family support that will enable them to realise their potential.

BOWLS
In the picturesque sport of lawn bowls, we have witnessed a thrilling start to the season in the NSW Women's Pennant, Grades 1, 3, 4, and the fiercely contested Mitchell Plate. With victories, finals, and remarkable accomplishments galore, let's dive into the highlights of this season and the tales of triumph from the bowling greens.
Grade 3: Mitchell District Flag Winners
The 2023 season kicked off with a bang, and the spotlight fell on Grade 3, who emerged as the Mitchell District flag winners. Their journey was filled with skill, teamwork, and determination, which led them to this coveted title.
But their quest for glory is far from over. Grade 3 now gears up for a thrilling showdown against Denistone Sports in the Region 16 playoffs. Expect nothing less than a display of precision and sportsmanship from these talented bowlers. Unfortunately, the result of this match will be in the next journal unless you are keeping abreast of our news via the Facebook page.
Women's Major Pairs: A Nail-Biting Semi-Final
The excitement doesn't end with the Pennant games. On Sunday, the 10th of September, spectators will be treated to a nail-biting Women's Major Pairs Semi-Final. Two matches have already gone to an extra end. So far, our semi-finalist’s are: - Sonia Baitieri & Sandy Desiatnik vs Dorothy Cragg & Marie Farmer. Along with, Lyn Palo & Robyn Eagles vs Joy Loh & Elizabeth Varecka. Good luck to all in your upcoming matches. While the date of the Final is yet to be announced, anticipation is already building. Fans can expect intense competition as the best pairs battle it out on the greens. The stage is set for an exhilarating climax to a season filled with promise.
State Rookies Qualifying: Rising Stars Opportunity to Shine
The future of bowls looks brighter than ever with the State Rookies Qualifying event on Saturday, 9th, and Sunday, 10th September. Four outstanding contenders—Sue Cunningham, Les O'Reilly, Dave Crelly, and Les Bate—will proudly represent Wenty at Guildford Bowling Club. Keep an eye on these rising stars as they aim to make their mark on the state level, displaying their talent and determination on the greens.
Champions Crowned in Major Singles Championships
In a thrilling showcase of skill and determination, Lyn Hickey emerged victorious in the Ladies Major Singles Championship. She defeated Sheryn Batcheldor with a score of 25-18 in a captivating final, claiming the title.
Meanwhile, in the Open Major Singles Final, the ever-consistent Franklin Fong faced off against young-gun recruit Emmett McLeod. In an edgeof-the-seat affair, Emmett showed nerves of steel, winning 25-20 to secure the coveted blue-ribbon championship.
Zone 10 State Triples: Wenty's Resilience
Wenty Leagues Bowls Club showcased its resilience and talent in the Zone 10 State Triples. Two sides reached the semi-finals but faced formidable opponents. David Hearns, Shane Clarke, and Cameron Curtis, as well as Alex Tonkin, Nick Redcliffe, and Emmett McLeod, put up a strong fight, though the victory eluded them this time. However, Wenty Leagues experienced tremendous success in the State Senior Triples, with an exhilarating final match featuring Emu's side of Mohan Lal and Dallas Palm, who led for most of the game but were
narrowly overtaken by defending champions Kevin Fitzpatrick, Jeff Gallagher, and Dale Maitland. We wish this trio well again at the State Championship finals to be held at Dubbo next March 2024.
Zone 10 Presentation Night: Club of the Year
In a moment of great pride, Wenty Leagues was named joint Club of the Year for the 2022-23 season. This prestigious recognition is a testament to the club's commitment to excellence and its dedication to the sport of bowls. Additionally, Warwick Weekley and John Champion shared the Reserve Bowler of the Year award, adding to the club's growing list of accolades.
Rising Junior Stars and Family Traditions Continue
The future of Wenty Leagues Bowls Club looks promising with the emergence of young talent. Isabella and Nicholas Swan were selected to represent Zone 10 in the NSW Junior 7-a-Side Championship in Dubbo, showcasing the club's commitment to nurturing young talent. Moreover, keep an eye out for Ryker Jenkins-Ruhe, the son of Danny and Tyneal, who has joined the club and is diligently practicing, promising to carry forward the family's legacy of competitiveness and high achievement.

CRICKET
We have had a busy last few months with registrations coming for our upcoming 2023/24 Season which is due to commence on Saturday, 16 September.
Again this year we have a good number of teams that will be representing Wenty Leagues in the PDCA competition:
Seniors
• 10 Teams
Juniors
• 20 Mixed Saturday morning teams
• 3 Thunder Girls Saturday afternoon teams
This equates to approximately 400 plus players.
In October we have the commencement of our Cricket Blast Program to be held at Monty Bennett on Tuesday afternoons, this is a great introduction to cricket to learn the basic skills of cricket. All the boys and girls that attend play cricket while meeting new friends and having fun, it’s always great to see the parents getting involved.
Lastly, we would like to thank all the parents and senior players that have volunteered to help this season as either a coach, manager, scoring our junior teams as without them we would not be able to have so many teams represent Wenty Leagues. Volunteers are always welcome!
We wish everyone good luck for the season, enjoy, have fun with friends and play each week in the Spirit of Cricket.
Yours in cricket

FISHING
Our July trip was very slow, lots of under current, the weather was not as predicted. We had a very windy and a heavy drift. We needed to fish in at 56 metres, only a few bites so the boat captain moved in closer without a result, no bites. We moved back out to the 56 metre mark but in a slightly different spot.
The day ended up with a good number of fish caught and the anglers were happy. The catch consisted of 18 Morwong, 3 Snapper, 4 Leather Jackets, 5 Pig Fish, 9 Flathead, 7 Maori Wrasse, 4 Sergeant Baker and 5 Sweep.
The biggest fish a Snapper weighing 0.87 kilos was caught by Charlie Harp and the biggest bag weighing 4.98 kilos was by Anand (Senior)
SUB CLUB Reports
Naidoo. We are very happy with our fishing boat captain as he always ensures we come home with fish.
The annual fish-off with Blacktown Workers finally went ahead on the 23 July. This is where the best five of Wenty Leagues Fishing Club are up against the best five of Blacktown Workers Fishing Club. It was Blacktown Workers Club time to host, meaning we go out on their boat of choice,
The friendly competition between the two clubs has been going on for years, we have a perpetual trophy that is held by the winning club for the year until the next fish-off. This year saw Wenty Leagues have their name added to the trophy and it will be displayed in the trophy cabinet of the Fishing Club.
The Wenty team was George Schembri, Anand Naidoo, Lewis Mangion, Russell Harvey and Steve Sakaluk, they caught a total of 23.82 kilos where the Blacktown team of Jack, Sam, Anthony, Charlie and Noel caught a total of 17.51 kilos. Wenty were the clear winner.
The biggest fish was a Teraglin by Steve Sakaluk weighing 1.80 kilos and the biggest bag went to Blacktown’s Jack with 7.61 kilos.
August’s trip on the 19th was cancelled due to bad weather and moved to Tuesday 22nd. The water was calm and seas flat. Anglers were able to fish at 50 meters initially alas no fish, so we moved to 60 metres, a few bites with seas remaining calm. Fishing was slow, the wind picked up as it often can, while we could we moved our further to 70 metres, the fishing picked up, the fish were on the bite.

GOLF
Welcome from Wenty Leagues Social Golf Club.
Thank goodness we are heading into the warmer weather as I think most players are over the cold morning starts. I know that in a couple of months we will all probably be complaining that it is too hot so I am going to enjoy the balmy weather while I can.
We are playing our annual challenge with Gosford RSL this weekend, so I will update you on the results in the next journal.
The Club’s Singles Matchplay Championship which is played over four consecutive rounds commenced at Penrith on the 6th of August and wrapped up at Studley Park on the 27th of August.

Well done to everyone who participated. Our COW is up to the 4th round which took place at Cumberland on the 3rd of September. The two players left to fight it out at the final at Springwood are Dominic Scali and Leon Plotkans. Good luck to you both.

The Snooker and Billiards Club (AKA the Snooker Club) has been a Sub-Club of Wenty Leagues Clubs for many years and we currently have seventy members from a diverse cultures and all walks of life. We hold a competition every Tuesday night commences at 7.00pm with prizes given on the night, to the Winner, Runner up and the two semifinalists. All members are welcome.
SUB CLUB Reports
The Western Districts Spring competition has now started and our teams are doing well.
In Division 1 our team is running fourth in a field of seven teams. In Division 2 our team is running second, with only one point between the top two teams.
In Division 3 Wenty #1 and Wenty #2 teams are running first and second. Wenty Club will host the Campbelltown Challenge held on 17 September.
Our aim is to maintain our support for our members and the community by keeping the men and women socially active and avoid social isolation, especially that some or our members are seniors.
Please come and visit our snooker room every Tuesday night from 6.30pm onward.
We would like to encourage more women to participate in our Tuesday nights competition even if they have little or no experience. We have members who would be too happy and able to provide their knowledge of the game free of charge.

We welcome players of all levels from beginners to advanced players, there’s a grade for everyone.

With a place in the finals locked in with two rounds remaining, the RMC side travelled to Fiji to take on the Kaiviti Silktails in Round 17. With a dominant home record and the Silktails needing to win to secure their place in the finals, this was always going to be a tough challenge. In one of our grittiest performances of the year - played in extreme humiditythe boys outlasted a very physical opposition 18-16 to become just the second side to return from Fiji with the two points.
Having secured a Top 3 spot finish with the win in Fiji, we took on the last placed Canterbury Bulldogs away from home on a cold friday night with a significantly depleted side. Reduced to twelve men following a first half send-off, the bounce of the ball favoured the young Bulldogs side throughout the night, resulting in an upset defeat and a wake up call for our boys leading into the finals.
Our week one Qualifying final pitted us against the Glebe Dirty Reds, who had beaten us in both matches throughout the year. From the kick off, Wenty dominated our larger opponents through the middle third of the field to establish a commanding lead that was never threatened. The eventual score line of 32-6 was a real statement and confidence boost heading into the Semi-Final against the undefeated St Mary's Saints.
Again, the boys started strongly and eventually got on top of our more fancied opponents, playing with great energy and intensity. With less than ten minutes remaining, the Saints scored a converted try to cut our lead to 6 points, setting up a thrilling finish. However, Wenty defended strongly to inflict the fist loss of the season on the Saints, with the final score of 18-12 earning our boys the first spot in the Grand Final and the following week off.
Following a resounding 52-0 win over Glebe in the Preliminary final, the Saints set up a rematch in the Grand Final and were out for redemption. With a return to form the previous week, Saints were on the front foot from the kick off, racking up early points at the end of their first set. Whilst we managed to get on the board soon after, the tide of possession went with St Marys and they established a strong first half
lead. Despite a stronger second half showing, we were unable to close the margin, with the Saints securing their first RMC premiership with a 40-12 scoreline. Congrats to the playing squad, coach Brett Cook and his staff on a wonderful season.
Our congratulations also go out to Wenty's Open Aged A Grade side - who featured several of our Harvey Norman Women's players - on securing the premiership on the same day. Great job girls!
Rod Pritchard, PresidentWUJRLFC Junior Rugby League
We are very proud of the club’s achievements this season as we have won 6 Premierships overall. Teams that were successful in winning their respective competitions are:
9-1 Coached by Abdul
11-2 Coached by Ben
12-1 Coached by Gavin
15-2 Coached by Ace
Open Women’s Coached by Judy-May
Trytime Squad Coached by Jared
Another 3 teams were also in Grand final and were very unlucky on the day. (14 Girls, 12-2 & 10-1).
Special mention to our Open Men’s Gold making the major Semi Final in a tough Manly competition with 12 players under the age of 21, Outstanding effort by the Coaching staff and Team.
The Board extends their Congratulations to all team officials having worked tirelessly to ensure that all respective teams were competitive and ready to give their best.
Thank you to our Club Sponsors who have added to the success of our Club and we look forward to continuing our relationship into the future. We are so fortunate to have so many loyal and faithful people that work with us to assist the Club.
