Letter from the President & Chair

MATT MARCHAND PRESIDENT & CEO

JEFFREY MACKINNON

Happy New Year and welcome to the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber’s Business Briefs! We have been hard at work advocating for business in the Windsor-Essex region. This includes calling for a deferral of the Provincial Government’s Cap and Trade program scheduled to be implemented January 1, 2017. The average Ontario greenhouse vegetable farmer with 13 acres is bracing for an $80,000 hit starting January 1, 2017. This cost is estimated to rise to $220,000 by 2022. Since 2004, electricity prices have increased dramatically by 383%. We partnered with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) to release a new report: Closing the Tourism Gap: Creating a Long-Term Advantage for Ontario. The report contains new data that reveals a significant tourism gap when compared to international growth rates. Ontario has foregone nearly $16 billion in visitor spending between 2006 and 2012 by not keeping up with global growth trends. Chambers are calling for a province-wide strategic plan to close the gap. In other news, WERCC President & CEO Matt Marchand and Tracey Ramsey MP Essex were the keynote speakers at the Labour Appreciation Night, featuring the presentation of the Charles E. Brooks Labour Community Service Award, on November 18. This was the first time a WERCC President & CEO was a keynote for the event. We celebrated our landmark 140th Annual General Meeting in November with special guest speaker Dwight Duncan, Interim Chairperson of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority. Duncan gave our Members an update on the Gordie Howe Bridge. The WERCC put on our Tech Show in November, focusing on giving small businesses ideas to implement immediately as part of our Small Business Too Big to Ignore campaign. We also hosted a special Breakfast with the Board for our Gold Circle, Pillar, and Community Builder members. These members were able to sit and talk directly with the WERCC’s Board of Directors. If you are interested in these membership levels, please contact Sherri Gowman at sgowman@windsoressexchamber.org. The 27th Annual Business Excellence Awards, presented by Windsor Star, will be here before you know it! Taking place on April 19 at Caesars Windsor, Augustus Ballroom, the 27th Annual Business Excellence Awards is the premier business event of year, recognizing professional individuals and companies who have set standards and demonstrated achievements that have contributed to the prosperity and business development in Windsor and Essex County. Visit www.windsoressexchamber.org for all the up-to-date news and events.

Chamber News

The Success of Small Business Will Determine the Success of Ontario’s Economy The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) in partnership with the WindsorEssex Regional Chamber of Commerce (WERCC) released the report Obstacles and Opportunities for Small Business in Ontario. The report highlights the contributions of small businesses to the provincial economy, while also identifying, and offering solutions to, the most pressing challenges that small business owners face. The report’s recommendations are the result of detailed consultations over the course of six months held by 25 chambers of commerce and boards of trade with hundreds of small business owners throughout the province as part of the OCC’s Small Business Too Big To Ignore campaign. The consultation with Windsor-Essex small business occurred August 9 at the WERCC.

1. Ensure affordable energy use for small business

“In Windsor-Essex, certainly the key issue for small business is the rising cost of doing business in Ontario,” said WERCC President & CEO Matt Marchand. “This report speaks directly to that key concern and offers recommendations,” added Marchand.

3. Develop a single access point for all government-funded workforce, training, and employment services

The report also highlights that businesses with fewer than 100 employees make up 98 percent of total Ontario businesses and two-thirds of private sector employment in Ontario. They contribute approximately 28 percent to the provincial GDP and created 87.7 percent of the new jobs nationally from 2005 to 2012. Given the significance of small businesses, the OCC and the WERCC urges the government to take immediate action to implement the following recommendations in the near term:

2. Work with all levels of government to establish a regulatory concierge service to assist small businesses in understanding, navigating, and achieving compliance with relevant regulatory requirements

4. Conduct a publicly available cost of doing business analysis in Ontario These recommendations will feature prominently in the WERCC’s and OCC’s work leading up to the 2018 provincial election.

What is the Office of the Procurement Ombudsman and what can it do for you The world of federal procurement can be filled with unexpected twists and turns, and we understand that. The Office of the Procurement Ombudsman (OPO) is a neutral and independent office committed to helping suppliers experiencing issues in federal contracting. In other words… The Procurement Ombudsman bridges the gap between suppliers and federal organizations by working collaboratively with federal organizations and Canadian businesses. Okay, so how can OPO help you? If you encounter an issue with the federal procurement process, you can file a complaint with OPO. If the complaint falls within the Ombudsman’s mandate, a review is launched. If the complaint is outside the Ombudsman’s mandate, we will do our best to direct you to the appropriate contact. In addition, OPO’s trained mediators can facilitate a dispute resolution session to help resolve contract disputes between suppliers and federal organizations. Our dispute resolution service has been proven to be highly successful, and is offered on a no-fee basis. Our goal is to get everyone talking in the same room. If we can talk it out, we can arrive at solutions, restore business relationships, and avoid costly litigation.

How you can help us help you We rely on feedback from suppliers like you to determine if there are recurring or systemic issues in federal procurement processes. The Procurement Ombudsman uses this information to undertake procurement practice reviews. These reviews provide the Office with an opportunity to look for best practices, identify areas for improvement, and make recommendations to help promote fairness, openness, and transparency in federal procurement. Should I call OPO? OPO wants to hear from you! It’s the best way we can help make federal contracting more fair, open, and transparent for small and medium-sized businesses. If you have a procurement-related question or concern contact 1-866-7345169 or opo-boa@opo-boa.gc.ca.

ERGONOMICS SOLUTIONS Insurance provides the best protection for those bitten by the travel bug

6 low-tech, low-cost ergo solutions for small business When it comes to addressing ergonomic issues, small business employers face three big challenges: cost, time, and resources. WSPS ergonomist Mike Lanigan shares six tactics that can help people work more comfortably and efficiently, and require little "talk, time and resources" to implement. 1. Observe and communicate. Visually observe job tasks and identify potential musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) hazards. Are people hunched over their work? Lifting awkwardly? Reaching above their shoulders? If so, adjust the work surface, racking and working heights, positioning to help workers maintain a neutral posture and reduce reach. 2. Provide a lifting or carrying device. If the work involves a lot of manual material handling (lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying), use a dolly, cart or lift table to move boxes. Implement a two-person lift for slightly heavy or awkward loads.

Each year, thousands of Canadians make a run across the border in search of U.S. bargains on everything from clothes and shoes to electronics and appliances. To prepare, they ready their passports and other identification, pack snacks, portable DVD players for the kids, and a roadside emergency kit. Yet travel insurance — one of the most crucial components of any visit across the border — is often forgotten, which can result in thousands of dollars in medical fees for a traveller should a medical emergency arise. Without proper protection, a quick out-of-province trip to visit the in-laws at their cottage, or a weekend excursion to Buffalo for some cross-border shopping could turn into a financial disaster. Travel insurance can be a complex purchase to consider. To ensure proper, comprehensive coverage, it is important to consider your personal situation before buying a policy that might not meet your requirements.

3. Add ergonomics to decision-making. When modifying or purchasing tools and equipment, for example, take into account the weight, amount of vibration, and grip required, so that people can avoid straining their arm or wrist. Involve management and/or workers who use the equipment.

For example, travellers with a pre-existing medical condition are often surprised to discover medical emergencies for that condition are exempt from their insurance policy. In addition, travel insurance can often come with age limitations, particularly for those over the age of 65 or, in some cases, 76.

4. Train supervisors and the health and safety representative. Recognize, assess and control MSD hazards, and if resources allow train all workers. With a small business you have a smaller workforce, so it wouldn’t take long to train one or two people or even all employees. Have the training focus on the workplace’s primary MSD hazards and common tasks.

MEDOC® travel insurance, offered through Johnson Inc., allows consumers to cover all their bases. Eligible expenses for medical emergencies are covered up to $5 million and the policy allows expenses to be paid directly to medical providers where possible.

5. Provide everyone with basic awareness training on ergonomics. Establish a baseline understanding of the hazards, so that people will feel comfortable identifying MSD hazards and be able to watch out for themselves and each other. 6. Check out products at trade shows. Trade shows are a great hands-on opportunity for testing products and asking questions. Often the shows have low or no entrance fees. Send workers as well as supervisors, who will have a broader sense of how well products or solutions would fit their workplace.

To learn more about the great features and benefits of the MEDOC® Travel Insurance Plan, please contact Johnson Inc. at 1-866-60-MEDOC (1-866606-3362) or visit www.johnson.ca/medoc.
