LETTER FROM THE CHAIR & PRESIDENT
Welcome to spring - a time of rebirth, renewal, and growth. We are celebrating our own “spring” at the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce and you will notice many exciting opportunities in the coming months. It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to the Chamber’s new President, Matt Marchand. Matt has been a long time Chamber champion and is now moving into the top seat. He has stepped aside as a board member and is now taking the reins to continue to lead this great Chamber. This was no easy task and we conducted an extensive and exhaustive search to fill this role. Matt is replacing Past President Linda Smith who served as our leader and oversaw many initiatives during her tenure. “I am excited at being able to build upon what has already been created,” said Marchand. “We have such a dynamic and talented staff and I look forward to working with them to create increased member advocacy, enhanced membership benefits, and top level programs and events” added Marchand. “It is such an exciting time in Windsor-Essex and I am very eager to work along with our fellow civic leaders to promote this region and continue to grow our economic base.” I would like to take this opportunity to give very special thanks to Interim President Don Marsh. Don has provided exemplary service to the Chamber and has been an outstanding leader over the past six months. Don served as a Chair of the Chamber in 2004/2005 and has been a part of the movement during his entire professional career. His passion and dedication has been simply unrivalled and we are very grateful for his leadership. Finally, I would like to offer sincere thanks to our Presidential Search committee. Under the leadership of director Janice Forsyth, the committee spent several months on this important task. Joining Janice were fellow directors Carolyn Brown, Dr. Alfie Morgan, and Chair-Elect Ed Miles. We have an exciting few months ahead of us as we continue to celebrate 135 years of serving the business community and providing a voice to our members. Stay tuned! One of our biggest events of the year, the 22nd Annual Business Excellence Awards, is quickly approaching. This year’s theme is Windsor-Essex 2.0 “Re-versioned. Upgraded. Available Now” and will be held at the Ciociaro Club on April 25. This year, the BEA Committee is presenting a few new awards, including Taste of Windsor-Essex, Go Green, and Rising Star. I hope to see you there! On behalf of the board and staff, thank you for being part of our Chamber, the voice of business in Windsor-Essex. Warmest regards, Jennifer Jones
WELCOME NEW PRESIDENt Matt Marchand, a Windsor native, joined the Chamber’s Board of Directors in June 2010. He has served as the Chair of the Government Relations Committee where he spearheaded the Chamber’s election strategy, including the debates, and led the initiative to bring the policy chairs together. Additionally, Marchand oversaw the Chamber’s policy and advocacy programs, developed and communicated Chamber positions, and advocated for business-friendly legislation at the municipal, provincial, and federal government levels. At his most recent position, Marchand was the Director of Government Affairs for a new rail infrastructure project in Windsor-Detroit at Continental Rail Gateway—a partnership between OMERS, The Windsor Port Authority, and Canadian Pacific. A proven business builder, Marchand was instrumental in successfully building broad-based community support for the rail tunnel project. Prior to that, Marchand held the position of Policy Assistant at the Office of the Mayor for the City of Windsor for 12 years. “I’m humbled by the Board’s decision and appreciate the confidence expressed by the Board. I look forward to the challenges ahead of me and feel lucky to be leaving one great team for another great team at the Chamber,” said Marchand. BUDGET.GREEN SUN
Chamber approves resolution on city of windsor budget policies The industrial and commercial tax burden for businesses operating in the City of Windsor is far above the average for Ontario. In 2010 the City of Windsor adopted Council Resolution CR170/2010 as part of its tax policy, acknowledging the disparity in residential vs. non-residential tax allocation. The resolution was not fully implemented.
According to the Chamber, the issue of assessment class tax ratios between residential and non-residential tax payers should be incorporated into its annual budget deliberation process before analyzing its annual budget. The Chamber also calls on the City of Windsor to adopt a policy and plan with annual targets for addressing the non-residential tax issues.
These findings are a subject of a Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce resolution approved in January 2012. The resolution contains both an action plan for the Chamber and a set of recommendations for the City of Windsor. The goal is to lower the tax burden for business property taxpayers over time.
The resolution opens an opportunity for the Chamber to approach subsequent City of Windsor and other municipal budgets in the region with a better defined set of policies. The policy will be followed by an advocacy effort that will include both administration and City of Windsor Council members. Lower and fairer
business property taxation will improve the business climate in the City of Windsor and the Windsor-Essex region. The finance department of the City of Windsor has indicated its willingness to discuss these issues with the Finance and Taxation Committee that put forward the resolution and its recommendations. The resolution and recommendations can be found at the Chamber website at www.windsorchamber.org/policy.

A GREAT SUCCESS
Following a lengthy hiatus, the Membership Services and Development Committee re-introduced an early morning networking session, Wake Up Windsor-Essex. On Tuesday, January 24, 2012—following a delicious breakfast provided by our gracious host (and Chamber Member) Grill 55 - well over 40 attendees had the opportunity to stand in front of a sold-out room to discuss the offerings of their respective business in a brief “infomercial” style format. Time was also allotted both before and after the main program for Open Networking. The Membership Services and Development Committee was overwhelmed by the positive feedback from attending Chamber of Commerce members.
The next Wake Up Windsor-Essex Networking Event will take place Tuesday, May 15, 2012 (venue TBD). Leveraging Social Media to Grow Your Business (Lunch and Learn) will take place Wednesday, May 2, 2012 (venue TBD).
CONGRATULATIONS
To Courtney Sterns for participating in the 2011 Johnson Insurance “Get a Quote” contest and winning the iPad
The Wake Up Windsor-Essex networking event was the first in a full schedule of Member-focused opportunities planned for the coming year. The Membership Services and Development Committee is working hard to offer Chamber Members varied opportunities for networking and education. On behalf of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce Membership Services and Development Committee, we would like to thank Grill 55 for being such wonderful hosts, and we would also like to thank all attendees for making it such a successful event, and providing valuable feedback for future events. NEW MEMBER Smoke & Spice Southern BBQ Tina Odette – VP/Treasurer
Bringing Windsor delicious and authentic southern barbeque since September 2008, Smoke & Spice serves up slow, wood-smoked ribs, pulled pork, beef brisket, chicken, deep fried pickles, homemade macaroni and cheese, and much more, all in a comfortable, family atmosphere. Also featured are a good variety of Pop Shoppe sodas and Ontario Craft Brewers’ selections of Lagers and Ales. Smoke & Spice has been enjoying their new location, now open at 7470 Tecumseh Rd. E., offering more seats and space for their customer base. The restaurant’s previous location at 1515 Ottawa St. will be opening soon as something completely different. Smoke & Spice offers a unique culinary treat for Windsorites - authentic southern barbeque right here in the Great White North! While still running their previous restaurant, Mamo Bistro, Ryan Odette decided to open a restaurant that was more accessible to average person, and southern barbeque was the cuisine he ran with. Owners Tina and Ryan Odette travelled to Nolensville, Tennessee to study the cooking stylings of Patrick Martin, owner of Martin’s BBQ Joint, to ensure their new venture would provide Windsor with excellent southern barbeque treats. Smoke & Spice was voted “People’s Choice Best Ribs” in the 2011 Windsor Ribfest and has won the “Best Restaurant in Windsor” title from WindsorEats.com for the past two years.
