WELCOME

Letter from the President Dear Chamber Members,

MATT MARCHAND

Here at the Chamber, we’re dedicated to advocating on behalf of our business community. In the past two months since our last issue, we’ve done some extensive legwork on various issues including single sports betting, food processing regulations, and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce’s Emerging Stronger campaign.

The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce has been working with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce on the Emerging Stronger 2013 campaign, a transformational agenda aimed at accelerating Ontario’s economic growth. It identifies Ontario’s challenges and advantages, and sets out practical and detailed recommendations for government and business. This plan identifies key issues that our community is facing—skills training, R&D, immigration, and much more. To view the full report, visit www.windsorchamber.org. PRESIDENT & CEO

The Windsor-Essex Chamber been involved with the Minister of International Trade, Ed Fast, on a free trade deal with the European Union – Canada’s biggest trade deal ever with 98% of goods to be duty free once the deal is signed. We hosted Steve Baker, President of Union Gas, to speak at our distinguished speaker series in January about how natural gas contributes to our energy mix. Chamber Gold Circle members were invited to hear the Chief Economist of the Federal Reserve speak in Detroit to give his forecast and analysis of the U.S. economy along with a senior economist from TD Bank giving the Canadian outlook.

The Chamber is also in the process of releasing a series of policy papers. The first one on transportation was released in February and papers are lined up on energy and the environment and finance and taxation. This is the first ever undertaking of such a proactive approach to policy. Congratulations to all of the policy chairs and their committees for their work. I also reached a milestone on March 5, 2013, marking my first anniversary as the President & CEO of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce. To celebrate, and to hold myself accountable to our Members, we held an interactive town hall. Members were encouraged to participate and ask questions as I went over what we set out to do, what we’ve accomplished, and outlined what is ahead for this Chamber and its members. As always, exciting events are on the horizon—the 23rd Annual Business Excellence Awards take place Wednesday, April 24 at the Ciociaro Club. We’ll be recognizing business individuals and companies who have set standards and demonstrated achievement that have contributed to prosperity and business development in Windsor-Essex. This year’s celebration features a Cocktail Reception beginning at 5:00 p.m. followed by a spectacular gourmet sit down Dinner and Show at 6:15 p.m. We also have our Annual Economic Outlook Luncheon on Wednesday, March 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Caboto Club, and a Distinguished Speakers Luncheon with the Hon. Teresa Piruzza on Friday, May 10. Although it’s still a few months away, we’re already in high gear for our second annual Windsor-Essex Leaders in Innovation Technology Forum & Tradeshow taking place Tuesday, October 29 at the Caboto Club, so be sure to save the date!

Niagara Falls, Windsor-Essex Chambers Urge Passage of Single Sports Betting Bill in Senate, Citing Missed Opportunity of Super Bowl The Chamber of Commerce Niagara Falls, Canada and the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce urge the Senate to pass Bill C-290, the Single Sports Bill. Bill C-290 has been in the Senate for nearly a year. “It’s a missed opportunity to showcase Caesars Windsor and enhance our competitive position in a tough marketplace, said Matt Marchand, President and CEO, WindsorEssex Regional Chamber of Commerce. “Having single sports betting at Caesars Windsor for Super Bowl weekend would unquestionably add significant economic activity and excitement to our region, added Marchand. “It is hard to believe this has been on the Senate agenda for almost a year with little or no action when it has been supported in the House of Commons by all parties, said Carolyn Bones, President, Chamber of Commerce Niagara Falls, Canada. “Having single sports betting at Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara for Super Bowl weekend would bring visitors to Niagara Falls near summer weekend numbers, added Bones. Bill C-290 has received support from all parties in the House of Commons. The Bill would contribute to the creation of additional jobs at provincially-operated/regulated casinos, attracting U.S. citizens to Canadian casinos, and reducing organized crime associated with single event betting. The Single Sports Betting Bill has already passed the House of Commons with all party support including support from Rob Nicholson, MP – Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and Brian Masse, MP – Windsor West, as well as many other stakeholders including the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.

Ontario Business Confidence Index Shows Businesses Plan to Expand, but are Unsure about Future of Ontario The Ontario Business Confidence Index shows that most Ontario businesses are confident in their own outlook and are planning to expand over the next five years. However, the same businesses are unsure about the overall direction of Ontario’s economy. The index is a survey of 2,386 businesses and was conducted as part of Emerging Stronger 2013, a business-driven economic agenda for Ontario released by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce, along with their research partner, the Mowat Centre at the University of Toronto. Emerging Stronger 2013 is a transformational agenda aimed at accelerating Ontario’s economic growth. It identifies Ontario’s challenges and advantages, and sets out practical and detailed recommendations for government and business.

Great Lakes Part of Current Economic Issues In November 2012 the WindsorEssex Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted an environmental breakfast featuring Lana Pollack, the Chair of the U.S. section of the International Joint Commission which is responsible for the implementation of Canada-U.S. agreements. Lana talked about the new CanadaU.S. Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and her role in its implementation but she also spoke about the ongoing challenges to the lakes, ranging from harmful algae to low water levels and about how public engagement is needed to hold governments accountable. These issues have practical implication for our business community as they affect our quality of life and ultimately our success on business issue such as economic development, recreation and tourism. For more information on our Environment and Energy agenda contact the Chamber at (519) 966-3696 ext. 28.

COMMUNITY & TECH

Tech Corner: WHAT IS ANDROID AND WHY IS IT SO POPULAR? Android is a Linux-based operating system (as is Apple) for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. It’s what makes them work. Google purchased the initial developer of the software, Android Inc., in 2005 and announced in 2007 that they were making the software available to everyone for free as open source. Apple and RIM don’t make their operating systems available to any other phone makers, while Microsoft has heavy licensing fees for theirs. All of a sudden, all the other mobile device makers had an amazing platform to load on their gadgets without having to pay Google (or their own developers) a penny. Overnight this levelled the smartphone playing field and virtually every manufacturer other than RIM and Apple now use Android as their platform of choice. What a huge savings for the device makers, allowing them to concentrate on making great hardware that would run the Android software. Like the other smartphones, you can download Android “Apps” from third party sites or through online stores like the Android Market which is quite different than Apple and RIM who force you to download apps only from them. The International Data Corporation estimates that mobile phone vendors shipped 225 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2012 which represents a 40% year-over-year increase. Of those phones, 68.3% percent were powered by the Android operating system. This year they estimate that 717 million smartphones will be sold. What’s equally important is that Android is showing up in more and more smart devices, like Samsung’s line of Smart TVs and appliances. All of these devices will be able to download Android apps, which is great for software developers developing on the Android platform and great for consumers. With the release of Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean to you power users) last year, Google has fine-tuned its phone and tablet platforms together into one very powerful operating system. There have been improvements to almost every facet of the software that will keep the platform growing at an amazing rate. The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone is expected to continue Android’s success. I believe that Android is the platform to beat, but still question whether or not we really need an Android-powered vacuum cleaner.
