WELCOME

Letter from the President & CEO

As President & CEO, I’ve been working to communicate with the membership and community more often and more effectively. We are telling our story to get the word out about how amazing the Chamber is. I had my first “Meet the President session at the Rotary Club meeting in April, reached out to the arts community at the ArtsVest workshops, and spoke at our Volunteer Appreciation event to let the Chamber volunteers know just how important they are to our success. In April, the Chamber, in cooperation with Teresa Piruzza, MPP WindsorWest, brought in the Hon. Harinder Takhar, Minister of Government Services, to lead a roundtable discussion about government procurement processes. The event was standing room only with lots of great buzz surrounding it! Our events have been taken to the next level with a sold-out After Business tradeshow at the Windsor International Airport and a spectacular night for the 22nd Annual Business Excellence Awards that still have people in awe. Right around the corner we have some big upcoming events like our Automotive Luncheon on May 24 with featured guest speaker Dennis DesRosiers, our 76th Annual Golf Tournament on June 11, and the Chamber Ball on June 23, where we will pay tribute to the Chamber’s outgoing Chair of the Board Jennifer Jones as well as Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient Sandra Pupatello. Joining the Chamber team in May is Sherri Dulcamaro, our new Manager of Sales, Retention, and Marketing. Dulcamaro, a life-long resident of the Essex County region, brings 20 years of corporate sales, marketing, and director experience to the Chamber. She has also been involved with the Chamber for more than 17 years, assisting the After Business Committee in planning over 100 Chamber events. Next up for the Chamber—I’ll be attending and participating in the Ontario Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting, and the Chamber will be taking on a leadership role to represent the business community in discussions about a potential mega hospital for Windsor. All of these new and exciting initiatives would not be possible if it weren’t for our members, as well as our excellent and efficient Chamber staff. All of us here at the Chamber look forward to continuing to be the voice of business in Windsor-Essex.

WINDSOR CHAMBER LEADERSHIP

Helps Prevent Stringent New York State Regulations From Damaging Region’s Economy The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce played a leadership role in preventing proposed New York State legislation from imposing stringent new requirements for international vessels using the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway system. In 2011, the Chamber issued its Ballast Water and Trade policy and brought forward a resolution calling for a bi-national solution to the problem. The resolution was introduced by the Chamber and adopted by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce at its 2011 AGM. The Chamber has also raised the issue with federal officials.

“We are very pleased with this decision,” said David Cree, member of the Chamber’s Transportation Committee and CEO of the Windsor Port Authority, “and hope it will lead to a bi-national solution to the ballast water issue.” The standards proposed by New York State would have required all ships discharging ballast water in New York State and ships transiting New York State waters to have the ability to clean their ballast water to a standard that is 100 times greater than International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards. According to the Windsor Port Authority, these unattainable ballast water requirements would

Harinder Takhar, Minister of Government Services. The roundtable, which was standing room only, focused on how to make the procurement process more accessible to local businesses, especially for small and medium-sized businesses.

Located at 3838 McGregor Blvd., Ted Farron’s Gourmet Butcher Shop has been serving top grade meat and top notch service to the citizens of Windsor and Essex County for more than 26 years.

The company is celebrating over 20 years of fuelling innovation, boasting an impressive portfolio, and offering a plethora of options in terms of Strategic Planning, Marketing, Communications and Public Relations, and Internet Strategy.

Farron offers great products at his shop, such as Canadian Black Angus Steaks, Fresh Ontario Lamb, Provimi Veal, and select Pork Products, among others. New this year is a line of Natural Beef, which is antibiotic-free, has no growth hormones, and is fed a 100% vegetarian diet.

DMG works hard to streamline their processes, ensuring their account executives, creative and production teams understand the deliverables and adhere to timelines and budgets. Each project undertaken at DMG is executed within a complete guideline. The company prides itself on excellent and continuous communications with their clients, detailed project estimates, tracking and reporting.

Besides working at his Butcher Shop five to six days a week, Farron is the Chairman of Cornerstone for Caring, a fundraising campaign for the new mental health hospital at the Windsor Regional Hospital. “Our goal was to raise $7.5 million, and we’re about there,” he said.

DMG continues to grow and has added three new members to their Online Digital Division. “Our clients are realizing the value of an electronic mix that includes strong social media, mobile-friendly websites, electronic brochures, video production, SEO and email campaigns,” explained Liz Farano, VP Marketing/Creative Director at DMG. DMG’s Online Digital Division is currently offering a 15% discount for members of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce for the development of their mobile website and/or electronic brochures. As for the future of DMG, the company strives to stay ahead of the curve. “We have refreshed our brand and will be launching our new website family this summer,” said Farano.

“We’re going to have a state-of-the-art mental health hospital right here in Windsor, so people won’t have to go visit their loved ones in London anymore. After we complete this at the end of June, they’re going to be breaking ground on a children’s mental health hospital on the same campus on Prince Road,” Farron explained. Farron, who is also a boxing coach, is getting ready to send Mary Spencer to the Olympics to represent Canada. “She’s favoured as one of the athletes to get a medal,” Farron noted. Additionally, Farron will be the incoming Chairman of the Board of Governors for St. Clair College. For more information visit www.farronsbutchershop.com
