WELCOME
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO Welcome to another issue of the Chamber’s Business Briefs. We’ve had a busy few months with even more exciting events and policy/advocacy issues on the horizon. In September I attended the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting in Kelowna, BC where I presented the Windsor-Essex MATT Chamber’s proposed resolution on MARCHAND allowing provinces to decide on Single PRESIDENT & CEO Sports Betting. I’m pleased to report that we received national support from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce membership to have Senate pass Bill C-290, Single Sports Betting. The resolution also called for Bill C-290 to come into force before the end of 2013. Community involvement is important to the Chamber. I was the guest speaker at the New Canadians’ Centre of Excellence Inc.’s Employer Appreciation Luncheon where I spoke on the importance of diversity and the Chamber’s work on our Immigrant Investor project. I was also a speaker at The National Pensioners and Senior Citizens Federation Convention and The Probus Club of Windsor-Essex.

I attended the Speech from the Throne in Ottawa in October as a guest of Jeff Watson, MP Essex. I was happy to see help with apprenticeship training to address the skills gap and renewed commitments to the Beyond the Border trade agreement as well as the Auto Innovation Fund. As for events, our second annual Windsor-Essex Tech Show was a great success. We saw many incredible exhibitors from WindsorEssex’s growing and vibrant tech sector and we heard from leading industry corporations such as Google and Blackberry. We also had numerous key speakers address our membership including Leader of Ontario’s NDP Andrea Horwath, Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara, and Dr. Deborah Kane at a Go For Health Luncheon. We have lots of great events coming up over the next few months. Our 137th Annual General Meeting and Luncheon is coming up on Thursday, November 21 and features guest speaker Richard Peddie, former President and CEO of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, speaking on “My Dream for Windsor-Essex”. All members are invited to attend. I hope you join us at the Multiple Business Holiday Party on Friday, December 6. This event gives small and medium sized companies an opportunity to celebrate with their staff, while at the same time networking and mingling with other businesses. We do all the work, you have all the fun!

WINDSOR-ESSEX CHAMBER SUCCESSFUL IN GETTING CANADIAN CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE SUPPORT TO PASS BILL C-290, SINGLE SPORTS BETTING The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce was successful in receiving national support from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce membership to have Senate pass Bill C-290, Single Sports Betting. The resolution also called for Bill C-290 to come into force before the end of 2013. Matt Marchand, Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce President & CEO, was in Kelowna, BC from September 28-30, 2013 for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting, where he presented the Chamber’s proposed resolution on allowing provinces to decide on Single Sports Betting. The resolution was co-sponsored by the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce, the Niagara Falls Chamber of Commerce, the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, La Fédération des chambres de commerce du Québec, the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce, and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. “We are elated that Chambers across the country are in support of the Senate passing Bill C-290,” said Marchand. “We hope that the senate will listen to the Chamber’s vast network and do what is right for jobs and our economy—pass Bill C-290. The economic
and social benefits of passing Bill C-290 are significant—including job creation, an increase in tourism, and a legal alternative to single event betting.” Bill C-290 An Act to amend the Criminal Code (Sports Betting) received all-party support in the House of Commons in March 2012 and has been stalled in the Senate since then. Bill C-290 would delete the specific provisions of the Criminal Code that make it illegal to bet on “any race or fight, or on a single sports event or athletic contest.” The provinces, under whose jurisdiction gaming has exclusively resided since 1985, would then have the policy lever to decide whether or not, and under what conditions, wagering on single sporting events will be permitted to occur. The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce thanks its resolution co-sponsors as well as local MPs Brian Masse and Joe Comartin, and the labour community including CLC President Ken Georgetti and Windsor and District Labour Council President Dino Chiodo. SIX TIPS FOR IDENTIFYING YOUR WORKPLACE HAZARDS According to the Ministry of Labour, a hazard is anything in the workplace that could hurt someone: it can be a practice, behaviour, tool or equipment, substance, condition, or combination of these. Here are six tips to consider when identifying hazards: 1. Know why the hazard assessment is needed. Employers and supervisors have obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act to inform workers of hazards so that the workers can perform their duties safely. Employers and supervisors can’t meet these obligations without conducting hazard assessments, and eliminating or controlling the risks 2. Form an assessment team of at least two people (two will notice more than one). Include a manager or supervisor; they are required by law to know what the hazards are. Also include a fresh pair of eyes on the team—perhaps an employee from another work area, a colleague from another company, or an outside consultant. People familiar with the work often stop seeing hazards over time. Fresh eyes may catch something you miss, or bring complementary experience to the process. 3. Determine an approach. Will you identify hazards by season, work area, steps within the work flow, or equipment? What makes the most sense for your organization? Look for all types of hazards: musculoskeletal, slips, trips and falls, contact with machinery, driving, violence, chemical, cuts, burns, and psychological. 4. Do plenty of homework. Prepare for the assessment by collecting and reviewing existing information. Start by touring your workplace and talking with staff. Look for activities, equipment, tools, materials, chemicals and situations that could potentially result in an injury. Ask yourself “what if” for 4 | WINDSORCHAMBER.ORG
each situation. If you have records of hazardous materials, previous inspections, hazard or injury reports, review them as well. 5. Keep an open mind. Don’t assume any task, procedure or process is safe, just because no one has been injured yet. 6. Involve your workers. Ask staff for input on hazards and how they may be controlled. As they walk you through tasks step by step, ask questions like, “What’s happened in the past? What could potentially happen? If someone wasn’t trained, what could go wrong? If I were doing it, what could hurt me, and how badly could I be hurt?” Reducing risks serves the well-being of everyone in the organization, including owners and employers. Involving staff and taking visible action to protect their health and safety shows you care and will win their buy-in and support. For more information Look for simple, easy-to-use resources to help you assess your workplace hazards, provided at no cost by our trusted health and safety advisor, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS). Search on “hazards” at www.wsps.ca, and click on each tab for a full spectrum of support. Also, stay informed with timely information about occupational health and safety by connecting with WSPS on Twitter at www. twitter.com/wsps_news.

TECH CORNER: THREE CORPORATE MOBILE DEVICE MUST HAVES FOR 2014 Mobility is the key to success in today’s business world. They have been for some time. But how does your business truly get a handle on the mobile devices attached to your business? Today, there are three emerging trends that will give you greater control over your business’ mobile device environment–and each is available through AlphaKOR’s partnership with N-Able technologies. Insight: Gone are the days of employees selecting their own mobile devices, and the corporation only paying the initial fees and monthly bills. Today, you can gain a deeper understanding of mobile device usage across your company with comprehensive reports ranging from Battery and Disk Usage, Device Composition, Model Composition, and more. Once you gain better knowledge of how your business utilizes their mobile devices, you’ll have the opportunity to streamline processes and procedures, and utilization protocols across the board. Protection: Critical and sensitive business data is literally walking around all over the place now that employees are taking your information everywhere they go. It is important to realize that when your businesses close for the evening and you lock the doors, your sensitive information is no longer locked away for the night. Consider this: 113 cell phones are lost or stolen every minute in the United States* *SOURCE: wwww.micro-trax.com/statistics If your corporate device is lost or stolen, AlphaKOR can find 10 | WINDSORCHAMBER.ORG
the device’s location, send it a message, lock the screen down, selectively wipe corporate data or wipe the entire phone! How do you currently enforce corporate security policies? AlphaKOR will apply a common set of policies that may include passcode requirements, lock down of the device’s camera or social apps, or purchasing through iTunes. Management: Corporate mobile device planning has never been so easy to manage! Standardize and pre-configure devices for fast and easy deployment. Set up profiles including Exchange, passcode, restrictions, VPN, and WiFi. I recommend every business with one mobile device consider Mobile Device Management. Mobile devices are being used in extremely innovative ways and are storing confidential corporate data and intellectual property. One mobile device ending up in the wrong hands could cause you and your business tremendous grief. A perpetrator could utilize your mobile device by sending out messages or malicious content to individuals in your contact list, access critical business infrastructure and information and retrieve personal material such as texts and calendar appointments. When you choose AlphaKOR for mobile device management, we will wipe or lock down your device within minutes of you contacting us. Let us manage your mobile devices today.
