The 26th Annual Business Excellence Awards are taking place April 20 at Caesars Windsor and will be here before we know it! Tickets are on sale online. You don’t want to miss one of the biggest events of the year and the chance to celebrate business excellence in Windsor-Essex. MATT MARCHAND PRESIDENT & CEO

Later that month, we partnered again with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce to release a report in response to the government’s decision to implement a province-wide cap and trade system by 2020, demonstrating our desire to take action in addressing climate change while ensuring our cost structure remains competitive. The report, Clean Profits, is available on our website at www.windsoressexchamber.org. The Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal was signed in October and the Chamber has been busy advocating on the region’s behalf with Canadian Chamber of Commerce staff on the ground in Atlanta providing regular updates to our members. Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce Requests More Details and Express Concerns about Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce is requesting all documents including side agreements with respect to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) be released. The TPP has been agreed to, but not ratified by the 12 participating nations. “There is still some differing commentary and perspectives with respect to the TPP and its impact on the auto sector,” said Matt Marchand, President & CEO of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce. “With our local economy being engaged heavily in the automotive sector, the documents are necessary for the membership and the community.”

TPP would create arguably the world’s largest free-trade zone, quite possibly the largest trade deal Canada has ever negotiated. Marchand also wants to see what rules on potential currency manipulation were agreed to by the signatories. “Reviewing the full documents and details of the TPP agreement and the related materials will help determine the impact of the TPP and help position our members and the region accordingly,” Marchand stated. For more information, visit www.windsoressexchamber.org.

“We want to make sure that any trade deal improves our competitive position,” Marchand added.

Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce Emerging Leaders Formed in 2014, The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce Emerging Leaders has been successful in bringing together the future generation of leaders in Windsor-Essex. Creators Jennifer Charron (DirectorRecruitment Services, Lucas Professional Search Group), Vanessa Burns (Director-Business Development, LucasWorks/Lucas Professional Search Group), and Paul Schlosser (Customer Success Manager, Pareto Business Group) developed the group of more than 80 members with the intention of providing future leaders with the guidance, network and mentorship to be successful in their careers. The group hosts casual events in partnership with the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce where Emerging Leaders can network with fellow young professionals. The group also offers free educational seminars with expert keynote speakers. “Windsor is full of talented, knowledgeable, and driven young business professionals who are making a difference in the community. Emerging Leaders gives young professionals the opportunity to create connections as we build our futures here in Windsor-Essex,” stated Burns. “We are all at a similar career level and it will be exciting to see where these connections will take us in ten or twenty years.”

Each Emerging Leader brings something different to the group. Many of the members come from different industries, professional positions and stages in their career, however everyone has the same goal - supporting their fellow Emerging Leaders. “Through our Lunch & Learns and Chamber events we are learning and connecting with one another and growing our professional networks,” said Charron. The group has received positive feedback not just from its members but from local community leaders, many asking how they can get involved. Schlosser says, “It is great to have received such wonderful support and interest in our group from local seasoned professionals. Many have come out to speak at our events and are invested in Windsor’s future leaders.” For more information on The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce Emerging Leaders and how you can get involved, email emergingleaderswindsor@gmail.com.

How to “Get It” - Health & Safety for Your Small Businesses: Let’s Make This Easier

You’ll find helpful links and downloads in the WSPS Roadmap for Small Business (look for it on www.wsps.ca/smallbusiness) for the basic documents that form the foundation of the Occupational Health & Safety Act:

The bedrock on which an organization’s efficiency and innovation stands is healthy and safe employees. If your workers are physically or mentally hurt or ill, they can’t focus on being productive and providing good customer service to help grow your business, however much they might like to.

• Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)

“Workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities fall into the arena of preventable risk,” says Paul Mansfield, Account Manager with our trusted partner, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS). “One critical incident can wipe out an entire business. That’s risk on a grand scale. Small businesses need to see health and safety as an investment in productivity, sustainability and profits, as well as in their reputation and corporate image.” WSPS has laid out the basics for small businesses in six critical steps to an effective health and safety program. The first in the series addresses how to “get it.” What is the “it” you need to get? It is a straightforward, practical to-do item, a basic first task you must complete to start you on your way, and one that acknowledges that safety is part of human nature. We look out for workers in the same way we look out for family members: it’s our collective responsibility as fellow human beings.

Get the basic first task behind you The first thing you need to do on your way to a health and safety program is post mandatory documents where Ministry of Labour (MOL) inspectors expect to find them. Why is this so important? Because it’s the law, for one thing. The OHSA requires you to post specific items on a bulletin board where everyone can see them, such as the entrance hallway or the lunch room. “Your health and safety board is often the first stop an inspector will make, regardless of industry,” says Mansfield. “If your board isn’t up-to-date, it sends a signal - much like a poor overall health and safety record - that bigger issues are lurking just out of sight. The completeness of your board goes a long way toward demonstrating goodwill and due diligence.” Another reason updating your board is important is because it’s one giant, simple, feel-good tick mark that will nudge you into the slipstream of steps two to six.

Target Building Materials

Life's Beat

Target Building Materials was a dream come true for founder Moe Drouillard in 1967. Target laid down roots as a specialty house for construction and building materials. In 1974 Greg Drouillard accepted the opportunity to begin what has been an amazing trek through Target’s evolution, which is approaching its 50th anniversary in 2017. Today, Target is an all-encompassing distribution business serving a wide demographic. It proudly serves all construction and building contractors and has positioned itself to serve the consumer market with a host of products that solve an array of homeowner challenges. Architectural and engineering firms that create specifications for the buildings they design oftentimes rely on the specialty knowledge of the highly trained staff that Greg assembled. Technical Training and Customer Care training are continually prioritized and contribute to Target’s longevity and success. Greg serves on numerous boards and associations: as a Director and President of the Specialty Tools and Fasteners Association, along with TORBSA, a Canadian Buying Group (current President), Associated Construction Distributors International, and has served as President of the LBMAO (Lumber and Building Materials Association). Additionally, Greg has volunteered for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, served as President of the LaSalle Youth Centre and is current Chairman for the Kingsville Community Policing Committee. Target has always provided funds for a wide range of Charities which are important in our community. The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce is an important ingredient in the success of Target Building Materials as witnessed by its 48 year tenure as a member.
