Letter from the President & Chair Welcome to another edition of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Business Briefs! In September, we attended the Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM in Regina, SK where all three of our policy resolutions received national support: Support the Canadian Steel Industry and its Supply Chain Clusters, Maximize the Economic Benefit of Recreational Marijuana, and Helping Small Business Scale Up. See page four for details. In October, we partnered with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) to release Fertile Ground: Growing the Competitiveness of Ontario’s Agri-food Sector, which presents a series of recommendations designed to address barriers to the competitiveness of the agri-food sector in the province. Agriculture is the number one or number two economic driver in Ontario, depending on how you measure it and we are committed to working with government and agribusinesses to enhance the competitiveness of this sector.

MATT MARCHAND PRESIDENT & CEO

We continued advocating for Small Business with our Small Business Too Big to Ignore campaign. OCC President & CEO Allan O’Dette met again with the WERCC and members in October where we announced our Small Business Too Big to Ignore report. Our After Business Networking evenings, now in their 34th year, returned on September 22 at Fourteen Restaurant & Sky Lounge. Stay tuned for even more networking! We also celebrated academic excellence with the 17th Annual ATHENA Scholarship Luncheon featuring Janice Kaffer, President & CEO Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, on October 28. Congratulations to the scholarship recipients! We’ve also hosted some special events for our Gold Circle and Pillar members including a luncheon with David MacNaughton, Canada’s Ambassador to the U.S., a Post Election Analysis and Briefing with Rusty Merchant, Partner, McAlvey Merchant and Associates, and a Global Security Briefing for Business Executives from Paul Potter, Partner, MI3.

JEFFREY MACKINNON

Coming up for the Chamber is our Policy Series Distinguished Speaker Luncheon, presented by exclusive sponsor Atlas Tube, featuring the Hon. Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation on November 9. Our Multiple Business Holiday Party takes place December 9 at St. Clair College Centre for the Arts—we do all the work, you have all the fun! Be sure to save the date for the 27th Annual Business Excellence Awards, presented by Windsor Star, on April 19, 2017 at Caesars Windsor. Chamber News

Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber Secures Support for Key Local Issues at Canadian Chamber AGM The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce (WERCC) secured national support for three key local issues: to focus policy efforts for a Canadian steel industry strategy, to safely regulate and maximize the cannabis industry, and to scale up small business. This took place at the Canadian Chamber’s Annual General Meeting, September 17-19, 2016 in Regina, SK

Helping Small Business Scale Up. Canada’s continued growth and prosperity depends on our capacity to innovate and translate these new ideas into real economic gains. To do so, we need to create an environment that lets our most promising firms thrive. However, key barriers are preventing entrepreneurs from continuing to build their business and achieve highgrowth, or “scale up”, in the country.

Support the Canadian Steel Industry and its Supply Chain Clusters. The Canadian steel industry is a cornerstone of our national economy. The instability of the global market economy and unfair market behavior, in large part by China’s steel dumping, has led to the sharp decline in the ability of our steel industry to compete globally. Steel is an important component of the Ontario and Windsor-Essex economy.

The WERCC and its Chamber partners recommend that the federal government:

“China is not a market economy and it is unfair to expect local Canadian steel producers, entrepreneurs and companies to successfully compete in this environment,” said WERCC President & CEO Matt Marchand. The sponsoring Chambers were WERCC, Hamilton, Sault Ste Marie. Maximize the Economic Benefit of Recreational Marijuana. The legalization of recreational marijuana, which has been promised by the current government as part of its 2015 election platform, would create a market worth up to $5 billion.

Create scale up visas/special immigration designations to accelerate the immigration process for international talent recruited by Canadian companies

Work with governments and private sector to identify current gaps in financing

Ensure public programs are aligned to facilitate scaling up

Increase support for businesses seeking to engage in international trade

Designate a percentage of all public procurement budgets to support businesses

Work with provincial/territorial governments, sector associations, and other relevant organizations to collect and publicize data, enabling accurate measurement of the scale up challenge and monitor the success of public policy responses.

In the event that the Government of Canada passes legislation to legalize recreational marijuana use, the WERCC, Abbottsford and the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce recommend that the government implement a regulatory framework that will allow competition and consumer choice while also protecting consumers, the public, and youth.

Busting the Myth: Health and Safety doesn't have to be complicated for small businesses “Too complicated” is a common misconception that Harry Stewart, WSPS’ Director, Small Business, hears when discussing health and safety with member firms, especially small businesses. “Costly, intrusive and inefficient” are others. Stewart understands where the misconceptions come from. Small business owners and managers face multiple demands on their time, have fewer internal resources than many larger businesses, and above all can't afford to spend valuable time hunting for information. The reality is that workplace health and safety doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple safety solutions exist for businesses of all sizes, often at little or no cost. No matter what industry you’re in, WSPS has tools and templates to help you build your health and safety program and know your legal requirements. Visit www.wsps.ca.

Tech Corner: Social Media for Small Business Opening a small business or launching a campaign? Here are some tips on how you can effectively use social media before the grand reveal to gain and retain followers. 1.

Pick your poison: Social media can be incredibly impactful but you want to make sure you pick the right platforms for your business's target markets. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Pinterest, Linkedin, Tumblr, the list goes on, but you don't need to be connected to all networks. Do some research and pick two or three that you feel are fitting for your specific business.

2.

Once upon a time‌: Social media is a fantastic medium to communicate your business's story. When connecting with your followers on social media, be honest about your entrepreneurial journey through photos, videos, and links. People appreciate passion, transparency, and visuals.

3.

3.5. Even the small things matter: When telling your business's story, share your milestones. Even the simplest information like getting your business license or buying an open sign can connect you further to building a relationship with your audience. 4

Consistency is key: If you are going to be on social media, make sure you're committed and consistent. Decide on how often you can realistically post and stick to it. If you feel that you can't keep up, hire a professional or use a program like Buffer or HootSuite to help you manage your accounts. These programs allow you to schedule everything from links, videos, and photos.

5

Have Fun: Some folks are intimidated by the social media world but I promise it's not scary. Only do what you think is best for your company. Take pictures, make silly videos and most of all have fun. People want to follow you to support you and your business.

Cierra Bray, President and Founder of CGal Media, www.cgalmedia.com.

Check, check, check: Create a brief timeline for your business that shares major events that need to be completed before your grand opening or launch date. Sometimes deadlines get pushed back and things come up. If you have a timeline with no confirmed dates, you are able to get your followers excited, constantly having them checkin on your social media pages. Windsor's Rock Gym recently did a fantastic job at this. They were able to get the community so excited for the launch of their business even though no one knew exactly when they were opening. You have to be creative and remember: transparency is key.

Community Builder

Enwin

MEDA Limited

ENWIN is the local electricity distribution company and water system operator responsible for the delivery of electricity and water to homes and businesses in our community. We distribute electricity to 83,000 customers in Windsor and operate the Windsor Utilities Commission’s water distribution system, delivering water to 73,000 customers in Windsor, Tecumseh and LaSalle.

Founded in 1970, MEDA Limited is a second generation engineering and professional and technical recruiting firm.

ENWIN employees serve and support the community by ensuring the safe and reliable delivery of these essential services at some of the most competitive rates in Ontario.

Our civil engineers work with municipalities and corporations on wideranging projects while undertaking research work with universities and various entities on the development of innovative construction products and applications.

As the cost of electricity increases across Ontario, ENWIN’s local role takes on even greater significance. We recognize that, while a local distributor cannot control provincial energy costs, we can and must, understand our customers and strive for the best possible level of service within our means. To accomplish this, ENWIN draws on a tradition of technology, innovation and sound management, with a focus on delivering value to all its customers. In 2015, we invested more than $40 million in electricity and water infrastructure and technology, and assisted customers in accessing conservation programs that have injected more than $30 million into Windsor’s economy since 2011. These programs are critical for local businesses, in particular large manufacturers, who must continue to prove to multinational shareholders that they can operate competitively in Ontario, despite rising provincial energy costs.

With over 40 years in the manufacturing and automotive industry, MEDA’s mechanical and industrial engineers will provide turnkey solutions or work as an extension of your team.

MEDA’s professional and technical recruiting team will work closely with your company, taking the time to fully understand your business needs and company culture to ensure the best possible fit. MEDA offers direct placement, contract, and contract to direct solutions. In 2006 MEDA formed Modern Staffing, a stand-alone entity driven to continually raise the level of service for both client and employee within the temporary staffing industry. With offices in Windsor, Mississauga, Michigan, and Texas, MEDA Limited is a local company providing global solutions. Integrity and respect are the foundation of everything we do. For more information visit www.medagroup.com.

It is vital that ENWIN understand the needs of the local business community in all sectors. Our membership in the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce provides one mechanism for connecting with the businesses we serve. For more information visit www.enwin.com.
