Letter from the President & Chair Welcome to the Fall edition of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Business Briefs! We’d like to formally welcome our new Chair of the Board for the 2016-2017 Chamber year: Jeffrey MacKinnon, Partner, McTague Law Firm LLP. Check out page 4 to meet the rest of our Board. In July, we partnered with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) to call on Premier Kathleen Wynne to commit dedicated provincial infrastructure funds to developing and expanding broadband internet access in remote and rural areas of the province. We were excited to see our advocacy efforts noticed the following week when the governments of Canada and Ontario announced a $180 million investment to bring high-speed internet to more than 300 rural communities in Southwestern Ontario.

Kathryn Sullivan, OCC Policy Analyst, and Matt Marchand went on a tour of agriculture businesses in Essex County in advance of a major agriculture strategy to be released soon. This report will lay out a province-wide strategy with Essex County being a key part. The WERCC was busy advocating for Small Business with our Small Business Too Big to Ignore campaign. OCC President & CEO Allan O’Dette met with the WERCC and members in August to discuss obstacles small businesses face. Marchand spoke on the WERCC’s concerns about the TPP at a Town Hall Meeting with Essex MP Tracey Ramsey on August 6. Marchand also spoke at the WERCC Emerging Leaders Lunch & Learn on Chamber 101. In September, we’ll be in Regina, SK at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM advocating with other Canadian Chambers on key issues such as urging the Canadian government to increase policy efforts for a Canadian steel strategy and to safely regulate and maximize the economic benefit of the cannabis industry. Coming up for the Chamber is the 17th Annual ATHENA Scholarship Luncheon on Friday, October 28 with guest speaker Janice Kaffer, President & CEO of Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital. Our Tech Show takes place Tuesday, November 8, and we have our Multiple Business Holiday Party on Friday, December 9 at St. Clair College Centre for the Arts.

Call for Nominations for the 27th Annual Business Excellence Awards Since 1991, the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce has recognized excellence in the business community with the Business Excellence Awards, now in their 27th year. Over 300 awards have been presented to local businesses and individuals. Now is the time to nominate! Nominations for the prestigious awards are open until Oct. 3, 2016. This annual business event, the Chamber’s largest, brings together business, government and industry leaders from all over the region to join in celebrating the Chamber’s and business community’s achievements. Every BEA event is an elaborate production. It has extraordinary exposure and prestige attached to it, and has become a must attend, sell-out event. The evening’s program holds an unprecedented reputation and explodes with excitement from approximately 1,000 guests as they gather to pay tribute to the award recipients. This year 10 awards will be presented and award winners will be announced on April 19, 2017 at the Business Excellence Awards at Caesars Windsor. Also included in the awards ceremony
are the recipients of the Believe Windsor Essex and ATHENA Awards. Additionally, the Business Excellence Awards Committee is currently looking for Judges and Sponsors to assist with this year’s event. Judges will be required to read and evaluate all submissions in the categories they are judging. A review meeting with all judges is mandatory as well as three site inspections of nominees are required. Judging will take place between November and mid December. The Chamber looks forward to seeing WindsorEssex businesses grow even further for the 27th Annual Business Excellence Awards this year. Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce Calls on Provincial Government to Push Broadband Strategy into High Speed The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) called on Premier Kathleen Wynne to commit dedicated provincial infrastructure funds to developing and expanding broadband internet access in remote and rural areas of the province. While the WERCC and the OCC acknowledge broadband investments made by the Government of Canada in the recent federal budget, internet access continues to be an issue in parts of Ontario. The letter to the Premier identifies three key recommendations that the Ontario government should address in the coming term to ensure all communities in the province are able to compete in the global economy: 1. Develop a robust broadband investment strategy that acknowledges that broadband is an essential infrastructure investment, and creates space for continued private-sector investment. 2. Build partnerships across all levels of government in order to leverage funding and respond to local need.
In April 2016, the WERCC along with the Ontario Chamber Network called on the federal government to address broadband access and quality. “This is not just a rural or remote issue. Suburban companies report similar issues with connectivity. The WERCC would like to see broadband infrastructure, something that Warden Tom Bain of Essex County has been advocating for through SWIFT (Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology), be realized sooner rather than later as it plays a vital role in economic development for our colleagues in the county,” said WERCC President & CEO Matt Marchand. With government services increasingly shifting to online platforms, universal access to high speed internet is becoming more important than ever. By working with the Windsor-Essex community and the Ontario business community, government can develop broadband policy that is responsive to existing needs while not dissuading private sector investment. Congratulations to K+S Windsor Salt Ltd. on the $60 million expansion of its Ojibway mine on Morton Dr., securing jobs and allowing the mine to operate until 2063. The project is in the final stages of engineering and design. Infrastructure changes required for the expansion will start in 2017. A production rampup is scheduled for 2018.

Congratulations to The Windsor Symphony Orchestra who will benefit from a $300,000 grant courtesy of the Government of Canada. The funding matches a $300,000 donation the WSO received in 2015. It’s the result of the WSO and the WindsorEssex Community Foundation successfully applying for a matching grant from the Canada Cultural Investment Fund, overseen by the Department of Canadian Heritage. The funding will be used to support the symphony’s artistic work in the community.

12 Ways to Engage Workers in Slip, Trip, and Fall Prevention Slips, trips and falls are a primary concern for all workplaces since they comprise 20% of all lost-time injury claims in Ontario, says WSPS’s Jennifer MacFarlane, a key account manager. The direct cost of an average WSIB claim is $11,771. Factoring in lost productivity and staff replacement, the running total is $59,000.
Make sure the fundamentals are in place Use the following checklist to ensure you have these essentials in place: 1. A company policy that clearly outlines the rules for housekeeping, lighting, and inspections. 2. Personal protective equipment (footwear, handrails, fall arrest equipment) and other equipment (ladders, lifting devices) that are in good repair and used properly. 3. Training on how to clean up spills, the proper use of fall protection equipment, the use of proper guardrails, covers over holes, etc. 4. Continuous follow-up to make sure rules are being followed and to identify what can be improved. 5. An incident investigation process that looks at root causes and how to eliminate them.
Take another look Set up a task force to initiate or support any or all of the activities below. Rotate people through the task force to engage as many people as possible and minimize individual time commitments.
Tech Corner: What is your Social Media Strategy? There are many tools to choose from when it comes to a Social Media Strategy. Where do you begin or how do you adjust your current strategy? How do you decide which channels to use? Define your goals such as your target audience, your message, what do you want your brand to be known as? What is your message? LinkedIn is the tool for building your professional network. It allows you to connect with your clients, potential clients, suppliers, referral sources, and advocates for your business. LinkedIn is an excellent source to recruit candidates to consider for your team. Twitter is ideal to send out timely messages to your audience. What is happening now in your industry, what is going on in your company, what events are you participating in or supporting; these are some of the things you can share. Facebook is a good tool if you are targeting a younger audience. Having a company page on Facebook can show others the people behind your brand

1. Review the workplace’s injury history with respect to slips, trips and falls. Where have you had near misses? What does this information tell you about where accidents are occurring, and which jobs carry the greatest risks? Share the results with all employees. 2. Conduct new risk assessments. Get the joint health and safety committee involved. Have supervisors start conversations with workers. Encourage people to come forward with specific concerns and solutions. 3. Link identified risks to policies and practices dealing with housekeeping, uneven surfaces, wet or slippery surfaces, obstructed vision, and protective clothing and devices. Adjust as required. 4. Raise awareness. Use posters, payroll stuffers, safety talks, demonstrations, and more to keep slips, trips and falls safety top of mind. 5. Clearly communicate the hazard reporting process. Encourage reporting and take immediate action to correct the problem. 6. Identify causes of unsafe behaviours (rushing down stairs, distractions, overreaching from fatigue). 7. Recognize people who actively contribute to slip, trip and fall prevention. Post their contribution on the safety board, add it to meeting agendas or special presentations, and publish it in company newsletters. For more information, visit www.wsps.ca.

As an owner/CEO/President you should consider blogging. You are the brand of your company. People feel closer and they feel like they know you. If you want to present yourself as the expert on the subject matter, you can achieve this with your blog. There are many other tools such as YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest and so forth that you can consider as well. Building your social media strategy starts with the basics of audience and message. Other tips: Timelines are important to ensure regular communications. Adding pictures to your messages will help increase the number of views. Balance your content with business messages, personal touch, expert advice, and remember to avoid selling to your audience.
