DEAR WESLEYAN FAMILY AND FRIENDS,

At the start of this school year, Greg Lisson, director of Christian life, introduced our Christian life theme for the year: Revive. In August, Greg wrote the following:

“The prefix ‘re’ simply means again. The Macmillan dictionary adds that it could mean ‘again in a different way’ or ‘back to how something was before.’ In our case, I hope it means both. As life returns to ‘normal,’ we hope many things will be restored to how they were before, while others will be refined and renewed so they return in a different way. And through it all we are reminded that we serve a God of redemption, reconciliation, and resurrection. A God whose steadfast love and faithfulness means He gives us grace again and again and again.”

Greg’s words could not have been a more accurate description of what we have experienced this fall. Our community has fulfilled a seemingly insatiable desire to simply be together. We have seen tremendous turnout for traditional events like divisional parent nights, all-school chapel, the Wolf Tracker Kick-Off and opening home football game, Hoedown, and many more. There has been a noticeable and renewed appreciation for the things we once took for granted and for the opportunity to simply be together as a school community.

However, what I have witnessed is more powerful than the simple desire to be in community with one another. When faced with extended frustration and loss for more than 20 months, it is human nature to do one of two things: either turn inward to find answers to impossible questions and circumstances, or turn to the only source of truth that is immovable and unshakable, the Bible. In short, once we get to the end of ourselves, that is when God can begin His work in us.

We have leaned heavily on the truths of God’s word over the last two and half years, and when I see the students, parents, grandparents, faculty, and staff of our community together at events on campus, there is so much more than the happiness of community. There is a palpable joy that comes from being a member of a community that I hope reflects the body of Jesus Christ.

I have preached many of these Biblical truths to myself during the long and difficult months since March of 2020, and I hope we as a community will continue to do so in spite of the good or bad circumstances we face.

As we look ahead to the start of a new year, I encourage you to consider these comforting words:

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever.”

HEBREWS 13:8

In spite of the chaos and confusion of our world, Jesus never changes. He is our rock. And by His very nature, nothing we encounter is a surprise to Him. Nothing catches Him off guard.

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

ROMANS 8:37-39

No set of circumstances, no struggle, no challenge is greater than the love God has for us. There is literally nothing that can separate us from Him. It is an irrefutable fact. This is part of the very nature and character of God. If He is who we believe He is, it is impossible for Him to be separated from us.

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

JOHN 16:33

As much as we would hope to avoid it, life will inevitably bring us hardship and pain. However, our comfort and hope are placed in the confidence that Jesus has assured us, that through His death on the cross, He has overcome everything and anything we could encounter.

As a community, we have weathered an incredibly difficult storm, and yet as followers of Jesus Christ, we can be assured that God was not surprised by what we faced, He never left our side, and He overcame all that we faced. The peace, hope, and confidence that can only come from Jesus is what I see and feel as our community once again gathers together.

Enjoy this edition of the Wesleyan magazine, and may we all know and live with the full joy of the greatest gift God gave the world: His beloved son, Jesus Christ.

The air outside is the sort of warm that early August brings. The middle school faculty is gathering in the pleasantly air-conditioned indoors, surrounded by photos of every middle school student temporarily taped to the walls. Teachers have prayed individually for these students throughout the summer, but on this day, they gather to pray collectively as a faculty for the children soon to be in their care. Each child. Each name. Each sweet face preparing to embark on a new school year.

Several months later, deep into autumn, Austin Chapel is lowly lit, and soft voices from all over the room form a low, communal mumble. Small groups of teachers, staff, and administrators are gathered throughout the pews, their heads bent and voices low in quiet, reverent prayer. Thanksgiving for a successful start to the school year and healed loved ones blend with prayers for student success, pleas for God’s hand to remain on Wesleyan, and personal requests not shared beyond the small prayer groups. It is the first Wednesday of the month, and all faculty, staff, and administrators have gathered for worship and prayer.

These touching and quiet scenes are not unusual on Wesleyan’s campus.

and encouraged in faith communities. Private prayer, sometimes described as conversation with God, brings the praying individual into close communion with God, but these times of group prayer are different.

Corporate prayer expands the one-on-one conversation into a group discussion. Personal thoughts, worries, and dreams become known beyond the individual and are spoken aloud for other fellow believers to hear, absorb, and lift up in prayer.

Corporate prayer — those moments when others are invited to collectively participate in our conversing with God — provides an opportunity to engage with God in a different way.

“Prayer is one of the greatest acts of intentional obedience,” describes GREG LISSON, director of Christian life. “As individuals and as a body of believers, our number one reason for prayer should be because we are instructed to do so. Throughout scripture, we are commanded repeatedly to pray — to praise, confess our sins, express gratitude, and bring our requests to God.

6 WESLEYAN MAGAZINE • fall 2022

we pray in groups, we get to see God from a new perspective. We get to know Him from a different point of view, as if we are learning about a good friend from a mutual friend or acquaintance. That other friend may value an aspect of God’s character that we haven’t noticed or fully appreciated before. When that happens in corporate prayer, it can deepen not only our relationship with God, but also our growing understanding of His character.”

Whether praying individually, in small groups, or in large gatherings, the spiritual discipline of prayer deepens our reliance on the Lord for His provision and protection. It is also a practice that challenges us to align our own will to the will of God.

“When we consider prayer as an act of obedience, it places us in a posture of trust,” explains Lisson. “We are trusting there is a reason God gave us that instruction and that He, as our good Father, knows that it is good for our soul.”

As the depth of our trust grows, we are transformed into people completely reliant — and accepting — of what the Lord provides. Even when it looks very different from what we envisioned.

“A common misunderstanding of prayer is that it is some sort of cosmic slot machine,” Lisson reflects. “We can all be tempted to believe that by ‘inserting’ a prayer, we get back out what we want. That is almost never the model of prayer in the Bible. Instead, prayer is a conversation with God that transforms our posture toward Him and conforms our will to His.”

fall 2022 • WESLEYAN MAGAZINE 7

When we pray together with the aim of aligning our posture and our will to God’s, the impact is powerful. Oftentimes we encourage one another to trust the Lord rather than ourselves. Total group reliance on the will and provision of the Lord is a reminder of who we are in relation to God. Truths of God’s character are reaffirmed to one another in those prayer circles: God is a loving Father; He is ever-present, all-knowing, and all-powerful; His will is better than ours; and He loves us more deeply than we can imagine.

“I confess that there are some Wednesdays when I arrive at faculty worship and am distracted by the busyness of everyday life and my own plans,” says CAMERON ALEXANDER, high school English teacher “But sitting down with my colleagues and friends to pray after worshipping together continues to bless me time and time again.”

Alexander continues, “It refocuses my heart and reminds me of all of the ways God is moving on and off campus. I’m always encouraged to continue to seek God’s will in all things and to approach life with a Kingdom-mindset. This time of group prayer has deepened my own prayer life, faith, and relationships over the years, and I look forward to it every month.”

Modeled for us in scripture, in prayer we are called to:

ADORATION — Praising God for who He is correctly orients us in relation to God.

CONFESSION — Acknowledging our sinful nature highlights the beauty of the gift of salvation.

THANKSGIVING — Expressing gratitude for the ways God meets and exceeds our needs gives perspective to our blessings.

SUPPLICATION Presenting our requests to God refines our heart as we ask humbly, while acknowledging His wisdom in how and when He provides.

The habit of corporate prayer is transformative — not just for the individuals who are praying, but also for the organizations in which they serve and do life. As prayer becomes the heartbeat of the daily habits and routines of groups, both large and small, collectively the people who make up organizations become more deeply centered on the Lord, focused on His will, reliant on His provision, and deeply grateful for His blessings that far outpace what could be asked for or imagined.

Let it continue to be so at Wesleyan School and in the lives of the families and communities we serve.

8 WESLEYAN MAGAZINE • fall 2022

In addition to moments of faculty prayer, parent groups gather throughout the year to pray for our community, students, faculty, and staff. A group of dads meets on the center court of Yancey Gym at 7 a.m. every Monday morning. Moms in Prayer meets weekly on Mondays in Shropshire at 8:10 a.m. Football moms hold a prayer walk at Henderson Stadium the morning of every varsity football game.

The list could go on and on. Groups of parents, co-workers, and friends join together throughout Wesleyan’s campus — indoors and outdoors — to lift their voices to God. One almost can’t help but wonder if the early families who built Wesleyan School anticipated, as they met to pray over the campus when it was dirt and a single road, that these spaces would be used as forums for conversations with God that transform lives and the community.

ACTS 1:14

Winston Churchill, Toni Morrison, Augustine of Hippo, and Albert Einstein are brilliant minds for different reasons, yet they share a common experience. Each, at a young age, studied Latin or Greek during their schooling.

the depth hy of language learning

In fact, until the middle of the 20th century, Latin played an integral role in both public and private school education across the globe. For thousands of years, humanity has recognized and embraced the value of learning another language. And yet, today, only 20% of Americans study a foreign language at the K-12 level, according to a 2019 study.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION FURTHERS WESLEYAN’S MISSION

In an age of information, technology, and Google Translate, why are students in the 21st century still taking foreign language classes? Will our students ever speak fluently in French or Spanish? Not to mention that no one speaks Latin anymore.

SUZANNE RAGAINS , modern and classical languages (MCL) department chair, explains, “When you learn a foreign language, you learn more than the mechanics of a language. You learn more than simply the vocabulary, the syntax, and the grammar of the language. You learn to understand the people who use that language in their daily lives.”

Ragains continues, “You appreciate, empathize, and connect with people who are in different communities, or, in the case of a classical language, who lived in a different time. We are delivering our Christian mission as a school when we help children understand that all God’s people are different, and all are loved.”

As we cultivate compassion through exposure and immersion, our students will develop a greater sense of empathy and will find a mutual understanding with people of different cultures.

10 WESLEYAN MAGAZINE • fall 2022

FOREIGN LANGUAGE ACQUISITION SHARPENS MINDS

Though the linguistic nuts and bolts of a foreign language might not appear especially flashy, they certainly equip the learner with a toolkit full of skills.

Ragains explains, “When you can function cognitively in multiple languages, you are making your brain more flexible. You are increasing your ability to code-switch, your ability to move from one task to another more fluidly, or even to potentially think about more than one thing at the same time…to cognitively multi-task.”

MAGGIE SMITH ‘11 , high school French teacher, further explains this superpower: “[Language is] pattern identification. It’s essentially a formula that you’re learning how to modify and adapt. You learn how to sub out different variables, so you end up using a new combination of mathematics, critical thinking, pattern identification, and problem-solving skills.”

Students must connect both familiar and unfamiliar pieces of the puzzle. They must infer, analyze, and pull together ideas using prior knowledge. That almost sounds like a math-English-STEM-foreign language class all wrapped up into one, doesn’t it?

Students at Wesleyan begin learning Spanish in kindergarten, as “humans are wired to acquire language more rapidly during our younger, formative years,” explains REBEKAH MARTIN-FONG , lower school Spanish teacher.

In the same vein, Ragains explains, “Babies are born with the ability to produce every sound that exists in the world. As they’re trying all the different sounds, their parents are giving input to help them figure out what sounds they actually need. At some point developmentally, they lose the ability to make the sounds that don’t exist in their first language.

“So phonetically speaking, the younger we can expose children to a new language, the more able they’ll be to produce native-like sounds to the target language. In other words, the earlier you encourage people to perform and practice those cognitively flexible tasks, the easier it’s going to be for them in the long run.”

From a missional standpoint, Ragains explains that the sooner we teach the diversity of God’s creation, the easier it will be for children to understand that loving all kinds of people is part of what it means to be a Christian.

She adds, “If from the moment that you are five years old you are exposed to people of different cultures who speak different languages from different communities and maybe even with different belief systems, you will be more ready to recognize that every human being has equal dignity in the eyes of the Lord.”

In fifth and sixth grade, Wesleyan students take Latin, French, and Spanish courses in nine-week segments. By the end of sixth grade, they choose a language on which to focus. In high school, students must take three years of the same language.

SEMINAR CLASSES BUILD ON STRONG FOUNDATION

By the time students reach their high school MCL classes, they are resting on a sturdy foundation of lower and middle school instruction. Language is comprised of building blocks, and each block is essential. The development and expansion of grammar and syntax allow conversations and cultural assignments to become more nuanced and sophisticated.

So, in students’ third or fourth year of high school, they can continue Latin, French, or Spanish by taking advanced placement or seminar classes. JOSEPH COOPER, high school Latin teacher, comments on the uniqueness of seminar classes: “For Latin, the seminar classes are great opportunities for students to apply what they’ve learned in a non-grammar format. It’s not simply translating. Instead, you have a chance to stop and breathe. You can slow down and appreciate the beauty of how we interpret language.”

Seminar classes are semester-long courses, and their topics vary. In Latin seminar, students are translating ancient texts and debating how translators could have arrived at two distinct English translations from the same passage. In a French seminar course, students will dive into fine arts-related topics and consider movements in history, specifically European art history. They will analyze why the Impressionists are considered the first wave of modern artists and will watch a mini-series about the era.

Cooper continues, “These classes broaden the students’ horizons because they are not just learning the roots of our language, but the roots of our culture. Why do you wear a wedding dress or a wedding ring? That’s Roman culture. Why do we know the difference between a comparative adverb and adjective? The Latin language. America’s Founding Fathers read Cicero’s seminal discussion on the three branches of government and the superior qualities of democracy, executive branch, and legislative branch. Ovid, a Roman poet, inspired Shakespeare. Direct lines from Roman culture seep blatantly into modern society.”

As students consider these higher-level topics, rich discussions unfold naturally. Cooper expounds, “There is enough difficult language that you need to be able to know what you’re talking about and access that prior knowledge, but that’s not the point. The point is to be able to discuss cool things.”

While seminar students are reading primary sources, writing argumentative essays, and yes, still tackling tricky grammar, they are also attending festivals and dining at local restaurants. They are listening to podcasts or watching the news in the target language.

JOE LAURITE ‘23 currently takes “Spanish Seminar: Contemporary Life.” He states, “Recently, we attended a Hispanic Heritage Festival in Norcross where we were able to try foods from different Latino countries. Trying the food is one thing, but being able to speak Spanish as we conversed with people and ordered food allowed us to communicate. Soon, we will visit an Argentinian restaurant and speak Spanish there as well.”

The class will learn why this particular restaurant offers multiple pasta dishes on their menu. Spoiler alert: Argentina has a significant amount of Italian influence from the post-war era in the 20th century!

In their study of another language and in all they pursue, Wesleyan students aim for excellence. They have dreams and plans for their future. They want to travel and play a part in this world.

Smith says, “Exposing our students to different communities and cultures better prepares them to interact with their surrounding world. Whether in the workforce, in college, or in social settings, they will undoubtedly encounter people who are different than they are. Our world is becoming increasingly connected, and it would be a disservice not to familiarize them with that.”

As Wesleyan students graduate with many years of language study and application already under their belts, they enter the world equipped with grit, unphased by a puzzle, adaptable when needed, and most importantly, empathetic towards their neighbors. But, just as translating a line of Vergil’s “Aeneid” is quite difficult, so is summarizing the value of learning a foreign language in a single sentence. To understand the impact, you will just have to try it for yourself.

NAMING GRATITUDE

Whether annually, monthly, weekly, or daily, the practice of pausing to celebrate gratitude is powerful and transformative.

What do dogs, planets, volleyball, and a Ugandan children’s choir have in common? Sixth grade scientists expressed their gratitude for each of these topics as they brainstormed on a “thankful Thursday” in September. Their class-wide gratitude list also included Family Night, friends, air, and opening night of the Wolf Jr. Players’ performance of “The Elevator Family.”

Every Thursday, shortly after the bell rings to start sixth grade science, these silly and insightful adolescents pause from the hustle and bustle of full hallways to specifically name what they are grateful for. Not only are the students practicing habits of gratitude, but they are also learning to reflect, listen, share, and celebrate what God is doing in their own lives and in the lives of their classmates.

Just across Scott Patio in Cleghorn Hall, high school students in AP United States Government fill pages of notebook paper with lists and doodles. Every single day in class, MARY BLALOCK ‘04 , high school dean of student life and social sciences teacher, leads her students in three to five minutes of reflective gratitude journaling.

“Using the money the Wesleyan Parents Club (WPC) gives each teacher at the beginning of the school year, I purchase basic composition notebooks for each of my students,” explains Blalock. “We use the notebooks at the beginning of every class, which also reminds me to be grateful for the support of the WPC.”

After the guided journaling time, a few students volunteer to share:

• “I’m grateful that it’s Friday and that I get to visit my brother this weekend.”

• “I’m grateful that my family and I hosted friends last night, and we played Uno and foosball.”

• “I’m grateful for late arrival days when I can sleep in a little extra.”

NAMING GRATITUDE

As students identify their own opportunities for gratitude, Blalock also sees windows to deepen relationships with students.

“When students share their moments of thanksgiving, I am learning about what they care about and what motivates them,” describes Blalock. “I can connect with them on a more personal level, like ‘Hey, I’m glad the Braves are playing well, too,’ and then I know to give that student a high five on days after big Braves wins.”

“Thankful Thursdays” and gratitude journaling are habits and disciplines of thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is woven into each day or each week for many Wesleyan students who learn to recognize the gifts they have been given.

In addition to daily or weekly practices of gratitude, Wesleyan also acknowledges annual celebrations of thanksgiving on our campus and around the world. John Wesley Day began in 2011 and is an opportunity for all current students to reflect on gratitude and write a thank you note to a Wesleyan Fund donor.

“Our hope is that our students realize the many gifts they have been given as Wesleyan students, and we also hope that our donors see how their generosity has a daily impact on campus,” explains CHAD MCDANIEL , director of development.

25 years of CLEGHORN HALL

Cleghorn Hall, named for Wesleyan’s first high school principal, Gwen Cleghorn, opened its doors on Sept. 7, 1997, and celebrates its 25th birthday this fall. The three-story, 47,000 square foot building serves students in kindergarten through twelfth grade by being home to Austin Chapel, high school classrooms, the college advising suite, and academic and administrative offices.

As we celebrate this anniversary, we also honor Gwen Cleghorn and those who gave generously to build this facility. In the spring of 2015, ZACH YOUNG, headmaster emeritus, explained that “Wesleyan’s success in its early years was directly attributable to Gwen. I begged her to take the job [as high school principal],” Young continued.

“When she consented, I knew Wesleyan had a real chance for success. When we named the high school building for her, we really were acting for all the schools and families that she touched in her career.”

The biennial lower school Thanksgiving program describes global practices of gratitude, including the traditional, American Thanksgiving. In 2015, the program expanded to include African, Asian, and European celebrations of gratitude. Like American Thanksgiving traditions, the Ghanaian tradition of Homowo celebrates a fruitful harvest and the many hands that contribute to this abundance. Chinese and German communities celebrate gratitude during the Mid-Autumn Festival and Erntedank, respectively.

“Historically and today, the common thread between all of these celebrations is that people pause their regular routines to express thanksgiving,” explains LISA MCNEARNEY , lower school music teacher.

Whether annually, monthly, weekly, or daily, the practice of pausing to celebrate gratitude is a powerful and transformative one, and ideally it will become a subconscious part of their being.

When Wesleyan students move from fourth grade to fifth grade, they may say that they are starting middle school, but logistically, they also understand that instead of spending their days in Warren Hall, they will now be in Wesley Hall. Similarly, most classes for ninth through 12th grade students are not in “the high school,” but rather Cleghorn Hall.

“Gwen’s immeasurable legacy as an educator, leader, and friend motivated generous giving from those she impacted. Their trust in Gwen undergirded their belief that Wesleyan could fulfill its mission to be a Christian school of academic excellence,” explains CHAD MCDANIEL, director of development.

Thanks to the foundation laid by Gwen Cleghorn and generous early donors, Cleghorn Hall sets the scene for Christian teachers and staff to help students grow in mind, body, and spirit on a daily basis.

THE PRACTICE OF PAUSING TO CELEBRATE GRATITUDE IS A POWERFUL AND TRANSFORMATIVE ONE.

Every building on campus is named in honor of significant contributors to Wesleyan. Some facilities, like Wesley Hall, are named for leaders of the Christian faith, John and Charles Wesley, and others, like Cleghorn Hall, are named for key institutional leaders, including Gwen Cleghorn, Wesleyan’s first high school principal.

Still other facilities, like Yancey Gymnasium or Gaebelein Baseball Field, are named for individuals who shaped and poured into families who then gave generously to Wesleyan.

Since the completion of the Hoyt Family Athletic Complex in 2020, the current capital campaign, the Campaign for Students, has progressed to the second phase called the Legacy Phase. During the Legacy Phase, the fine arts building is being named Cole Hall in honor of Sharon and Matt Cole, retired executive headmaster for major gifts and planned giving.

As middle and high school students engage in fine arts classes or after school activities, they will no longer go to “the fine arts building,” but rather, those classes and activities will take place in Cole Hall. By identifying the facility this way, Wesleyan expresses profound gratitude to the Coles.

Similarly, we look forward to building Young Hall, the future STEM building, named in honor of Studie and Zach Young, Wesleyan’s headmaster emeritus who served as headmaster for 18 years.

All across campus and in every division, Wesleyan hopes to model and encourage practices of thanksgiving, and this community celebrates the many forms that gratitude can take. Through journaling, prayer, conversation, singing, dancing, feasting, and even simply using the specific names for buildings, Wesleyan rejoices in how abundantly the Lord has blessed this school.

Expressions of gratitude — both conscious and subconscious — are reminders that we are called to give thanks to God because “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above,” (James 1:17) and to Him be the glory!

22 WESLEYAN MAGAZINE • fall 2022 Why College Representatives Choose Wesleyan: THE TWO-WAY STREET OF BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN STUDENTS AND COLLEGES

Some college representatives take a quick trip up I-85 to visit with Wesleyan students, and others travel more than 4,000 miles to greet and engage with students. Whether visiting from across the ocean, across the nation, or across the county, college representatives want to get to know Wesleyan students, and they want Wesleyan students to have a better understanding of their college or university.

This fall, more than 75 different colleges and universities visited campus to recruit Wesleyan students. Students in 11th and 12th grades sign up to meet with the representatives, and the small group — or even one-on-one conversation — becomes a two-way street for the student and college to get to know one another.

“I value meeting with college representatives because they provide insights into the culture and academic programs offered by their respective universities,” shares ALEXANDER GLOVER ‘23 , who chose to visit with numerous college representatives.

From the perspective of the college representative, these visits allow them to share more about their school. “High school visits are a great way for us to bring a little bit of Baylor to Atlanta,” explains HUNTER HASTON, Baylor University’s assistant director of admissions counseling. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to get an inside look into a university without having to commit to traveling to a campus to meet with someone from that institution.”

While the student is getting to know the college, the college is also getting to know the student.

“The visits provide the college with an opportunity to not only see our beautiful campus, but also see first-hand how articulate and poised our students are,” says KEN CONNOR, director of college advising.

on

“Colleges are interested in recruiting well-prepared students, which is hard to discern on paper but much easier in person,” continues Connor.

Because of the Wesleyan culture, which emphasizes the importance of “yes ma’am, no sir,” eye contact with adults, and a thoughtful, curious desire to learn, Wesleyan students are well-prepared with the “soft skills” required to engage meaningfully with college representatives.

To help students put their best foot forward when visiting with college representatives, Connor and the college advising team encourage students to plan ahead and prepare a few questions that are not easily answered via the university’s website. This advance research not only equips the student to play an active role in the conversation, but it also demonstrates their specific interest in the university.

College and university admissions offices value that demonstrated interest, and it can benefit students tremendously as they become applicants at those schools. “Often the representative is the one who will be advocating for our students during admission committee meetings where students are being discussed, so the specific, face-to-face conversations of the campus visit are a definite plus,” explains Connor.

FALL 2022 COLLEGE REPS TRAVELED FROM...

In addition to learning more about individual students, college representatives also learn more about Wesleyan in general. “College advisors meet with representatives, and we have the opportunity to explain how rigorous our curriculum is and the level of involvement that we ask of our students. We are providing them with a more specific and clearer understanding of Wesleyan that helps them contextualize our students’ applications,” says Connor.

This contextualization is part of why many representatives return to campus each year. During their time on campus, college representatives get to know individual students and our school community.

“Year after year we see students make the jump from Wesleyan to Baylor and end up as active members of the Baylor and Waco community, excel in the classroom, and leave Baylor to make an impact on the world for a greater purpose,” explains Haston.

As college representatives make repeated visits to Wesleyan, the college advising team can establish invaluable rapport with the college’s admissions office. “The college advising team enjoys deep relationships with representatives — some dating back 20 years, so when we have questions or concerns, they know who we are and that we have the best interests of our students in mind,” explains Connor.

As Wesleyan seniors discern their next steps after graduation, visits from college representatives help students gather the information needed to make wise choices about which school is the best fit. Paired with prayer and in partnership with their parents, students can draw upon their connections with colleges to select a school that will foster the continued pursuit of their passions.

HIGH SCHOOL LEADERS BRING ENTHUSIASM AND SPORTSMANSHIP TO COMMUNITY CLINICS

The scoreboard in Henderson Stadium still glows with the final score of the football game as high school students funnel out of the stands and into their cars. Too soon after crawling into their beds, the buzzing red numbers of the scoreboard are quickly replaced with a buzzing alarm: time to coach some flag football and cheerleading.

“I am so impressed with our high school coaches,” says SEAN NESTOR, middle school counselor and flag football coordinator. “They show up early each and every Saturday morning, and they are always ready to roll — even after a late night traveling to support the varsity football team.”

While some of their classmates may be sleeping in until noon, these high school students spend their Saturday morning coaching Wesleyan’s community clinics: flag football and cheerleading in the fall, basketball in the winter, and tennis in the spring.

Community clinics are open to children in kindergarten through sixth grade regardless of where they attend school. Participants learn the fundamentals of sports in a fun, safe, and encouraging environment, and nearly 100 children participated in this fall’s flag football and cheerleading clinics.

FOLLOW @WESLEYANSUMMER FOR MORE INSIGHTS INTO COMMUNITY CLINICS, SUMMER CAMPS, BEFORE AND AFTER CARE, AND ENRICHMENT CLASSES.

Since formalizing the community clinic program in 2016, the program has exploded with popularity. “The growth in the clinics has been tremendous!” exclaims KELLY WEATHERLY, director of auxiliary programs. “What started as scattered programs with fluctuating participation is now an exciting celebration of our community.”

Weatherly goes on to say that community clinics are a “win-win-win-win.” The players work on skill development and teamwork; parents of participants have reliable and exciting Saturday morning plans; metro-Atlanta families continue to be introduced to Wesleyan; and high school coaches practice important leadership skills including encouragement, patience, communication, and responsibility.

“The high school coaches really deserve a lot of credit,” says Weatherly. “They go all in.”

FROM FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS TO SATURDAY MORNING STARS

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CARDINALS AND THE JETS, 2022 FLAG FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS! THE CARDINALS WERE COACHED BY ANDREW DRAYER ’25 AND ALEMANIA AYALA ’24, AND THE JETS WERE COACHED BY NICK SCHALLER ‘23 AND LUKE MADISON ‘25.

Championship Saturday is perhaps the best example of just how “all in” the high school coaches can be. After a few weekends of practices and regular season games, the age-specific playoffs narrow teams down into consolation games and championship games.

As Championship Saturday approaches, good-natured smack talk begins to bubble among the high school coaches. “It is fun to be competitive with the other coaches,” smiles THOMAS CHIPMAN ‘23 , who coached his third season of flag football this fall. “After most clinics, a lot of the coaches go across the street for bagels, and we start to break down the games and brainstorm how to better coach our players next week.”

Their commitment to the players also extends to the school week. “I love seeing my players in the hallway and saying hi,” says WILL BRAMMER ‘24.

“The high school coaches are excellent role models, and the players think their coaches or ‘the big kids’ can do no wrong,” reflects Nestor.

Nestor recalls chatting with a fourth grade player and his parent after a disappointing game. Despite dropping a few passes, the fourth grader nodded with determination. “Coach Thomas and Coach Will told me to keep my head up and keep doing my job,” he concluded.

The player’s persistence confirms the importance of the coaches’ encouragement. Coaches also commit to praising humility, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Each week, the younger teams celebrate a “teammate of the week” — someone who maintains a positive attitude and work ethic.

A season of hard work concludes on Championship Saturday when the energy of Friday Night Lights in Henderson Stadium is replicated in the Hoyt Family Athletic Complex. The lower school choristers sing the national anthem, and flag football players run through banners designed and painted by the cheerleaders. The cheerleaders chant, jump, dance, and tumble on the sidelines, and during their halftime performance, their coaches remind them of key motions and shout encouragement.

Dressed in team-embroidered button downs and donning fake headsets, the football coaches call the most effective plays from their laminated playbooks. As the young players heave touchdown passes, dash for first downs, and leap to grab interceptions, their coaches continue to praise their effort and identify teachable moments.

When the clock winds down, one team from each age division celebrates and jumps for joy. But long after the cheers quiet and the victory is forgotten, the players will cherish their coaches and “big kid” role models.

And the coaches? Well, they just might be eating bagels across the street, already brainstorming for next season.

FROM FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS TO SATURDAY MORNING STARS

T h e w h e e l s on the bus go round and round

Before dawn each morning, the Warren Hall parking lot buzzes with anticipation. The sound of bus engines firing to life fills the air as 12 drivers greet one another, coffee typically in hand. In just a few short minutes, they disperse across north Atlanta to pick up and transport students back to school.

In shopping centers and MARTA parking lots throughout the area, families gather to meet the buses. Excited students with eager smiles and a few yawns greet the bus drivers as they arrive. Chatter on the ride to campus is cheery, often revolving around what is scheduled for the day ahead. The volume almost always gets louder as the bus draws closer to school.

“The bus program has continued to grow year after year,” says TODD ASHLEY, transportation coordinator. “Every morning we have 12 buses pulling out between 6:15 and 6:30 a.m. on their way to collect 144 students for their morning ride to school. Each afternoon, 10 buses head out after 3 p.m. and take 116 students to meet their parents at seven different locations in the area.”

As if bookending the day, students are equally excited as they gather to board the afternoon buses to go home. Middle school students, released slightly earlier than other divisions, eagerly socialize with one another on the sidewalk by the buses along Zach Young Parkway. Students share snacks from the Spirit Shop as they catch up on their days. High school riders trickle down as lower schoolers arrive together escorted by Coach Damm each day.

“One of the special things about the bus program are the relationships that are formed among the riders and between the riders and their regular driver,” says Ashley. “When you are a part of the beginning of a child’s morning routine and the end of their school day, there is a unique bond that is formed. Drivers get to know a student’s regular morning — like what they like to have for breakfast or which sibling is slower to wake up — and they get to know what students are like at the end of the school day — who is excited to do their homework on the ride home, who needs to sit quietly listening to music, and who is going to take a nap. It is a sweet routine every day, and those drivers are just one more adult getting to know our students in a way that we hope makes every child feel known, loved, and seen.”

and all over town

Because bus riders represent every division of the school, there are some interactions that would not happen if not for the buses. It is not uncommon for high school students to sit near lower school students, and for the younger of the pair to be a bit more talkative at the end of the day.

“Our drivers have a front row seat — quite literally — to sweet conversations between older and younger children,” Ashley goes on to say. “Riders across grade levels compare homework and share snacks. Several of our high school riders are so kind and encouraging to the younger students, and whether they know it or not, they are heroes in the eyes of the younger students.”

This school year has also brought about a multi-generational bus, the first in Wesleyan bus history. KEN HONEYMAN, grandfather to Kinley ‘29 and Addie ‘31 McCalla, drives the Brookhaven bus every morning and afternoon. It is no coincidence that he’s driving this route because Kinley and Addie are riding the bus.

...

“This is a special way for me to spend some time with my grandchildren, get to know some of their friends and serve their school community,” says Honeyman. “When my grandchildren enrolled at Wesleyan, my daughter contacted me and told me there was a need for bus drivers. I’m semi-retired and thought this would be a great way to serve the school. It works out well because my granddaughters don’t come home after school on the bus due to after school activities, so by the time I come back to the school, they’re done, and I can drive them home in the car and find out about their day!”

“I always tell people that working at Wesleyan is the most fun job I’ve ever had,” says JOE ALBRIGHT, bus driver. “Everyone works hand-in-hand to make each day a great experience.”

“We started the bus program in the fall of 2015 as a pilot program with only one 15-passenger bus to Brookhaven in the mornings,” recalls CHRIS CLEVELAND, head of school. “We were candid with our families that this was just a pilot, and it may not work out. Little did we know what we had started. Hundreds of riders and a growing fleet of buses later, the bus program has become a significant way for us to support families, meeting the transportation needs of our parents. More importantly, the bus program has enabled us to further the reach of the school and allowed more families and children to experience the Wesleyan mission to be a Christian school of academic excellence.”

summer sabbaticals

Wesleyan’s Summer Sabbatical Grant exists to challenge faculty members to pursue a lifetime of learning. The grant is intended to enrich teachers professionally by equipping them to further the mission of Wesleyan School through study, volunteer work, Christian missions, research, or other scholarly activities.

The grant was designed as a strategy to support and serve excellent faculty who have demonstrated service and loyalty to the Wesleyan community.

Summer sabbaticals give teachers an opportunity to explore their passions, while immersing themselves in a professional growth experience that is unique to them as an individual.

Summer sabbaticals also benefit students and enhance the overall classroom experience. “Upon returning from summer sabbaticals, teachers enjoy sharing their experiences wi th colleagues and students who benefit from hearing firsthand how the recipients of the grants have stepped outside of their comfort zone to challenge themselves to grow personally, professionally, and spiritually,” explains RAMONA BLANKENSHIP, associate head of school . “The lessons learned during the summer sabbatical are often integrated into the teachers’ lessons, which enriches the overall experience in the classroom.”

During the summer of 2022, three faculty members, Meagan Brooker, Laura Jensen, and Ashley Stainback, embarked on trips after receiving a Summer Sabbatical Grant.

Meagan Brooker

During June, ME AGAN BROOKER, high school visual arts teacher, spent 14 days touring and studying plein air painting, or painting on site, in Italy, France, and Spain.

Brooker immersed herself in European culture while learning more about her craft. She took a painting class in Florence focused on landscapes, a

“I filled a sketchbook with lesson ideas, helpful advice, and small moments that may turn out to be quite impactful in how I see the world, art, and culture. I feel renewed in my perspective and approach to art, which I hope in turn to impart to my students,” Brooker shared upon her return.

She stated that the sabbatical left

Laura Jensen

Another Summer Sabbatical Grant recipient, LAURA JENSEN , pre -firs t teacher, spent her summer climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

Jensen partnered with Beyond Adventures, a travel company committed to “taking you to the crossroads of adventure and rest — where distractions fade, time slows, and you feel most alive.”

Before beginning the climb, Jensen went on a safari to Tarangire National Park. “In pre-first we explore countries by learning about the animals, geography, people, and culture,” explained Jensen after returning from her trip. “We kick off the year with Tanzania. Now, my understanding and perspective is so much richer. I can share my personal experiences with my class, instead of just relying on books and the experiences of others.”

After arriving in Arusha, Tanzania, Jensen’s climb began at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro at the Machame Gate, 6,000 feet above sea level. After six days of climbing, the adventure culminated in what is coined “the longest day,” a day of nearly 4,000 feet of elevation change capped with a sunrise ascent to Uhuru Peak, 19,341 feet above sea level.

“I knew that an experience like this would change me forever,” shared Jensen. “I will always be able to confidently tell my students that when we rely on God’s strength and the community around us, we can do hard things.”

Ashley Stainback

Another grant recipient, ASHLEY STAINBACK , high school math teacher, deepened her love for math through an 11-day European highlights tour.

The tour allowed Stainback’s appreciation for math to grow as she studied the architectural design of buildings created by early architects, whom Stainback believes were also mathematicians and artists.

“Where my husband saw the design from a structural perspective, I saw it from a mathematical perspective. I wanted to create the equations that represent an arch or a circle. I wanted to model the spoked road design in terms of angles and potentially the unit circle,” Stainback explained while reflecting on her tour.

Stainback returned from her trip feeling excited to tell her students about her experience and inspired to continue encouraging them to see the beauty of math in the world around them.

“I cannot wait to take some time and research the dimensions of many of the buildings, arches, etc. that we saw and begin the process of working them into my curriculum,” shared Stainback. “Maybe some of my students will see the brilliance in the designs and be inspired.”

BECKY CARDWELL

SEPTEMBER 20, 1960 - JUNE 24, 2022

On June 24, 2022, the Wesleyan School community lost a friend, fan, colleague, and warm face many new families met when they first arrived on campus. Becky Cardwell served in many roles over the years in both the high school office and in Gillfillan Hall. For the last eight of her 16 years on campus, she served as the executive assistant to the head of school, greeting guests and families alike with warmth that demonstrated both her love for people and for Wesleyan School.

“I am hard-pressed to identify anyone who loved Wesleyan more than Becky Cardwell,” remembers Chris Cleveland, head of school. “In an email to me from 2015, Becky wrote, ‘I am truly humbled to be able to work and serve at Wesleyan. There quite simply is no place like it.’”

Cleveland went on to recall, “Following Becky’s tragic and untimely passing, I received many notes, cards, and emails, all describing her in a similar fashion: sweet, warm, faithful, Godly, joyful, an encourager, and a bright light.”

A devoted cheerleader of both her beloved Wolves and her colleagues, those who worked with Becky recall how she made a point of finding ways to encourage those around her in the day-to-day work of the school.

“Becky’s desk at Wesleyan was a couple buildings away from mine, but I would find excuses to walk over there because I knew she’d find a way to lift me up, either with a smile and a kind word or with a Trader Joe’s dark chocolate peanut butter cup,” shared Greg Lisson, director of Christian life. “I told her those were my favorite, and every now and then an entire bag would mysteriously find its way into my office or box at school.”

From her desk in Gillfillan, Becky had a unique viewpoint as she saw the full breadth of the Wesleyan community and both the opportunities and challenges that come with managing an independent school. She had a knack for knowing just when someone needed encouragement or perspective, and she was not shy about sharing either.

“She was consistently my biggest cheerleader,” Cleveland recalled. “She was eager and excited to tell me positive Wesleyan stories, from a phone call or a conversation, or her favorite line, ‘Guess what I heard today?’ Her endless enthusiasm in sharing these stories was clear evidence of her love for Wesleyan School. She also loved to leave things on my desk when she knew I was out of the office. It might be a snack, a Trader Joe’s peanut butter cup, a Diet Dr. Pepper from QT, or a copy of a devotion she had recently read.”

44 WESLEYAN MAGAZINE • fall 2022 IN MEMORIAM

In addition to being an encourager, Becky was the sort of prayer warrior everyone needs in their lives. Whether she knew of a need or simply felt someone could use God’s encouragement, provision, or protection, she prayed. And she did it faithfully.

“No matter what was going on at work, at home, or any other part of my life, I knew that Becky was praying,” recalls Jennifer Copeland, assistant head of school for external affairs. “She made such a habit over the years of telling me how she’d prayed for me that I just knew she would be praying. A friend like that, one who is diligent and committed to praying for those they love, is hard to replace.”

Becky knew what it was like in the day-to-day trenches of raising a family, and she spoke words of wisdom and encouragement to the working parents who crossed her path. She took the “Gillfillan kids,” her name for the children whose parents work in Gillfillan Hall, under her wing and from time to time kept their favorite candies in her not-so-secret stash for each of them. She asked about their days and encouraged them in their studies.

Even greater than her love for Wesleyan was her love for her family. Her husband Eric, daughter Chelsea ‘07, son Daniel ‘10, and daughter-in-law Cayla brought her great joy. The Wesleyan School family is better because of the time we had Becky on campus. The impact she made is undoubtedly eternal, and her presence is, and will continue to be, missed deeply every day.

SAM BRADSHAW

MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN • 2013 - 2022

After nine years serving on Wesleyan’s facilities team, Sam Bradshaw retires as a beloved and reliable friend to many. The reach of Bradshaw’s warm smile is immeasurable, and he extends kindness to everyone he meets.

“Sam Bradshaw is about as relaxed as they come,” describes Brian Morgan, chief operating officer. “He is also super smart and intuitive. He has a calm, friendly, and pleasant personality and has been a blessing to those on our campus — staff, parents, and students alike.”

When Bradshaw arrived on campus in 2013, he remembers being impressed by the immaculate campus. Second, he noticed how friendly the staff, children, and parents are. Laughing, he recalls “It is the same today.”

As Bradshaw begins his next chapter, he is looking forward to spending more time with his grandchildren.

DIANE ORR

HOUSEKEEPING • 1996 - 2022

Diane Orr’s laughter, joy, and positive attitude will be greatly missed as she retires after serving on the housekeeping team at Wesleyan for many years. Orr’s humble helpfulness is grounded in her deep faith and strong conviction.

“Diane Orr is an invaluable member of our team,” explains Suyapa Bono, operations manager. “She is always ready to bring her best and always willing to lend a hand.”

Spencer Cornett, director of facilities, adds that Orr is “always joyful with a loving heart towards everyone.”

Orr is excited to travel during retirement, and she will continue to bring Christ’s joy wherever she goes.

LINDA SCHUTTE

• 1993 - 2022

After reading a job listing in the classified section of a Dunwoody newspaper, Linda Schutte joined the Wesleyan Day School staff in 1993. Schutte remained with the school as it became Wesleyan School and found a home in Peachtree Corners. “The changes have been many since then,” explains Schutte, “but Wesleyan still has the comfort of a being a small community. We care about each other at Wesleyan, which makes this the perfect place to work.”

“Linda Schutte is a born servant. Her first instinct has always been to help others, and she has the rare ability to make everyone feel special and welcome,” describes Billy Coxhead, chief financial officer.

As a human resource professional, Schutte steps into challenging situations with tender compassion and a focus on serving others. Her gentle relatability comforts everyone around her. “I love knowing people’s stories and sharing my stories with people with care,” says Schutte.

In her next chapter, Schutte is excited to stop setting her alarm clock every morning and to spend more time with family and friends. She is also looking forward to playing more tennis and working in her garden.

ANNUAL REPORT 2021-2022

Thank you for taking the time to review our 2021 – 2022 Annual Report, a summary of the efforts of so many to support Wesleyan financially. In the pages that follow, you can read summaries of the Campaign for Students capital campaign, Wesleyan Fund, Alumni Fund, special gifts, Georgia GOAL, endowments, and the Legacy Society. It is a joy to be able to report to you all of these wonderful accomplishments that aide in furthering our school’s mission of being “a Christian school of academic excellence.”

I hope you will take the time to review the results of all of these efforts and share in my gratitude and humility as you think about the countless lives of children who have been and will forever be impacted through the generosity of Wesleyan families, friends, and graduates.

By almost any metric you choose, the health of our school is strong. However, as wonderful as these results and metrics are, these are not the things that drive us. These are by-products of a school culture driven by consistently asking and answering the following two questions:

1) What can we do to further the Christian mission of our school?

2) How can we make the Wesleyan experience better for our current students and families?

Answering those questions led to our current capital campaign, the Campaign for Students. Having successfully finished Phase I of the campaign by completing all projects at the Hoyt Family Athletic Complex, we are now moving into Phase II of this campaign which we are calling the Legacy Phase. The project we plan to complete in the Legacy Phase is Young Hall. This new, two-story, 42,000 square foot academic building will house middle and high school STEM classrooms, larger high school science labs and classrooms, a college advising suite, office and meeting spaces, and a prayer chapel. The building will be equipped with updated technology and have spaces easily transformed and reconfigured to meet a range of academic offerings and activities. This building will be called Young Hall to honor the significant contributions of Studie and Zach Young. Mr. Young served as headmaster at Wesleyan from the fall of 1996 until the spring of 2014.

We are calling this phase of the capital campaign the Legacy Phase for two reasons. The first is looking back on our history and acknowledging people who have made a significant difference in the life of our school. Families who you never knew and who will never know your children believed so passionately in the mission and vision of this place that they created something truly amazing. These early pioneering families took a chance on a school with no academic reputation, facilities, or traditions, but they believed so deeply in the future of Wesleyan School that they built this campus and paid the debt in full. The second reason for the name Legacy Phase is the opportunity for the current generation of Wesleyan families to create and leave their own legacy. Twenty years from now, what will families say about the legacy that was left for their children? There are new chapters to be written in our story, and I am confident that the God who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, wants to do great things in and through you.

Thank you for your investment in the spiritual, intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of children, and thank you for furthering the Kingdom through the mission of Wesleyan School. I continue to be grateful to you for your ongoing support of our school and your confidence in us. I am gr ateful to God for His many blessings on our school and pray that He will continue to bless you and Wesleyan School over the course of this next year.

Sincerely,

CAMPAIGN FOR STUDENTS

From the earliest days of Wesleyan School, we have been blessed by incredible generosity with more than $171.6 million being raised to fund six capital campaigns since 1996. These campaigns built our campus and created an endowment that will have an eternal impact on students, faculty, parents, and friends of Wesleyan. We are currently in the second phase of the Campaign for Students, and our desire is to enhance endowment for financial aid and building maintenance and to buil d academic facilities to meet the needs of all students on campus. Wesleyan remains debt free, and the endowment stands at $25.5 million, as of June 30, 2022.

LEARN MORE ABOUT WESLEYAN’S HISTORY OF GIVING

The following benefactors have made capital campaign and endowment commitments to the Campaign for Students, and while we are currently still raising support, total campaign gifts and pledges have exceeded $39 million as of June 30, 2022. We are exceedingly grateful to these donors who are continuing a powerful tradition of philanthropy at Wesleyan School.

64 ANNUAL REPORT: CAMPAIGN FOR STUDENTS

21 22

WESLEYAN FUND

The Wesleyan Fund is the foundation of all Wesleyan fundraising efforts, and each year we ask every family to participate. Wesleyan is a community with a history and heart for philanthropy. For 24 of the past 25 years, we have met or exceeded 90% parent participation in the Wesleyan Fund, and in 20 of those years, we met or exceeded 95% parent participation.

Supporting the Wesleyan Fund allows us to hire and retain the best and brightest teachers, fund need-based financial aid, and remain need-blind in the admissions process. When we find an excellent teacher who also wants to coach a sport, lead in the arts, host a Bible study, and give up his/her spring break to go on a mission trip with our students, we want that person to sign our contract every year and make a career at Wesleyan. Being need-blind in the admissions process allows us to accept students based upon their academic merit, not their parents’ ability to pay. The student experience is enhanced when talented young people, regardless of family income, are a part of our community.

It is truly humbling to think about the generosity of the pioneering families of Wesleyan School from the earliest years in Peachtree Corners. They were so committed to the mission of Wesleyan that they sent their children to school in trailers and ultimately built and paid for what we enjoy today. To honor their legacy and follow the call of Christ, we must continue to push ahead for current and future generations of Wesleyan students.

2022 GEORGIA GOAL

GEORGIA TAX CREDIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Financial aid has become increasingly important to Wesleyan. Since 2008, the state of Georgia has allowed for the redirection of state income tax liability to a qualified student scholarship program for the purpose of need-based financial aid. Wesleyan participates with the qualified student scholarship program known as Georgia GOAL.

Through the GOAL program, Wesleyan has provided aid to students whom we might otherwise not have been able to serve, thus furthering Wesleyan’s ability to fulfill its Christian mission. We would like to thank Wesleyan parents, grandparents, faculty, and friends for their participation and support. The Georgia GOAL participants are listed for the 2022 tax year through September 30, 2022.

OPPORTUNITIES TO LEAVE A legacy

THE ENDOWMENT FUND

The Endowment Fund

For Wesleyan to be a top-tier institution, endowment becomes a pressing need. Endowments are a pool of funds that continue in perpetuity. A designated portion of the return (currently 4 percent) provides a stream of income to support financial aid, faculty, and capital maintenance. We currently have ongoing needs to add to our current endowment of $25.5 million. There are three major components of the Endowment Fund:

Financial Aid

Endowment funds for Financial Aid allow Wesleyan to help current Wesleyan families in need. In addition, financial aid also provides educational opportunities for students with diverse talents, backgrounds, and interests who will enhance Wesleyan’s student body.

Capital Endowment

New buildings have been built, but as they age, they will always require new roofs, new chillers, and major IT improvements. This endowment allows us to enhance these structures.

Legacy Society

Faculty Salaries

Wesleyan’s commitment is to hire only faculty members who exhibit a personal Christian faith. Every faculty member is expected to lead, teach, and mentor our students by example in the way they conduct their own lives. Endowment for faculty salaries enables the school to attract and retain Christian faculty of the highest caliber.

Wesleyan, like all independent schools, exists because someone felt a need for the institution. There are only three ways to fund a school such as Wesleyan — tuition, annual giving, and income from endowment.

Currently, our endowment provides less than 1% of the operating budget — ideally, it needs to provide at least 15%. For Wesleyan to be in the top-tier of schools, we need to dramatically raise our endowment to at least $50 million. One of the best ways to do this is through Legacy Society gifts of life insurance, charitable trusts, will bequests, or retirement plan assets. From our original group of 15 donors, the Legacy Society has grown to over 60, including the entire board of trustees. These people are making a permanent gift that outlasts their tenure as parents and, above that, their service to the school.

Particularly in this area, we are grateful for the small and knowledgeable group of volunteers who work with the Development Office to direct our planned giving efforts.

Bequests

Including Wesleyan School as a beneficiary in one’s will provides a meaningful future gift to the school, as well as savings in estate taxes.

90 ANNUAL REPORT: OPPORTUNITIES TO LEAVE A LEGACY

Life Insurance Policies

A life insurance policy naming Wesleyan School as owner and beneficiary may provide a substantial future gift to the school. The value of the policy, as well as the annual premium payments, may be tax-deductible and will be treated as annual gifts to the school.

Charitable Trusts

Charitable remainder trusts may provide lifetime income, immediate tax savings, and avoidance of capital gains tax while establishing a major gift for Wesleyan as the trust’s ultimate beneficiary.

Wesleyan Fund Campaign

Since tuition does not cover the full cost of a Wesleyan education, taxdeductible gifts to the Annual Fund fulfill a number of needs. These unrestricted contributions supplement the school’s operating budget and provide dollars needed for faculty salaries and financial aid. The entire Wesleyan community is asked to give to the Annual Fund. The Annual Fund begins July 1 and ends June 30, coinciding with our fiscal year.

Capital Campaign

The financial support of this school is dependent upon the support of every family. Capital campaigns exist to fund new buildings, purchase additional land, and grow the endowment for the school.

Restricted & Memorial Gifts

These gifts are designated for specific requests for program and extracurricular activities.
