Director’s Notes Welcome to the Wesleyan Wolf Players production of All Shook Up! We are so excited to share this wonderful story full of big characters, fun songs, loving layers, and a lot of hip shaking. Through the songs of the King of Rock n’ Roll himself—Elvis Presley—we get to sing and dance our way down a journey inspired by Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Not only do we get to watch all of our characters take twists and turns on their excursions to finding that special someone, but we get to—literally—twist and shout our way along their paths of mistaken identities and questionable choices. Without a doubt, my favorite aspect of this show is the relationships that we get to see unfold before us. So many of the characters begin their story thinking they know exactly what they want out of life. Some are quite content to live as they are. Some are seeking love while some have set aside the dream of finding love forever. As new faces come to our dreary town to shake things up a bit, something interesting happens. Our characters begin to fall for each other! They take control of their journey to “Burnin’ Love” as our main character, Chad, puts it. So gripped are they by their passions and aspirations that their affections become misguided and muddled, so watch out! Now, we know good characters have ups and downs. We know that a good story must have trouble and heartbreak. A show would be very boring if we had none of that! Well, buckle up! We have all of that coming your way, however, I encourage you to pay close attention to the moments of surrender. Not just the moments when a character “surrenders to love,” but the moments when they give over their future and trust that it’s going to be ok. In fact, it’s going to be better than ok because it’s going to be completely different than what they originally thought! We all have times in our lives when we’re holding on very tightly to something. Perhaps it is a career goal or a life benchmark or even an expectation of our own journey of loving someone. Speaking from personal experience, I know that the Lord is just waiting in the wings to sovereignly take hold of those journeys for us. When we hold something too close to us and set our minds and hearts on just what we want—especially concerning finding your special someone—we are bound to be disappointed by our human efforts. The truth is, when we invite the Lord on this journey and give the outcome over to Him, He will never disappoint us. In fact, He is excited to receive our trust and can’t wait to bless us abundantly. God comforts Jeremiah by saying, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.’” (Jeremiah 29:11) The Lord knows who we will end up with! The path to finding them can be truly joyful when we wait with hope and patience for God to reveal to us who that person will be. Whatever burden you’re bearing, friend, I encourage you to give it over to the Lord. “Cast all your care upon Him for He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7) After all, He already knows where you’re headed and is happy to carry the load for you. Our life is meant to be spent in peace with Him. He is always patiently waiting for us to say, “Yes, I’m ready. I trust in you, Jesus. I know you got this.” In partnering with our Savior, we will be able to rejoice in the ups and downs, sing through the heartbreaks, and dance to the blessings of His purposeful outcome for us. God’s guidance never fails and is always driven by His love for us. Stephanie Simmons High School Director

Elvis Presley Biography Elvis Aaron Presley, in the humblest of circumstances, was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. He and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1948, and Elvis graduated from Humes High School there in 1953. Elvis’ musical influences were the pop and country music of the time, the gospel music he heard in church and at the all-night gospel sings he frequently attended, and the black R&B he absorbed on historic Beale Street as a Memphis teenager. In 1954, he began his singing career with the legendary Sun Records label in Memphis. In late 1955, his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor. By 1956, he was an international sensation. With a sound and style that uniquely combined his diverse musical influences and blurred and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time, he ushered in a whole new era of American music and popular culture. He starred in 33 successful films, made history with his television appearances and specials, and knew great acclaim through his many, often record-breaking, live concert performances on tour and in Las Vegas. Globally, he has sold over one billion records, more than any other artist. His American sales have earned him gold, platinum or multi-platinum awards for 150 different albums and singles, far more than any other artist. Among his many awards and accolades were 14 Grammy nominations (3 wins) from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, which he received at age 36, and his being named One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 by the United States Jaycees. Without any of the special privileges his celebrity status might have afforded him, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. His talent, good looks, sensuality, charisma, and good humor endeared him to millions, as did the humility and human kindness he demonstrated throughout his life. Known the world over by his first name, he is regarded as one of the most important figures of twentieth century popular culture. Elvis died at his Memphis home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977.

Production Notes It’s so amazing that our show reflects two well-known rock stars who literally shook things up in their own time. The Bard was constantly coming up with new plots and iambic lines while The King introduced to the world to a swagger that it had never seen before. The breakthrough of these two artists is something that we take for granted today, and their legacy is something that we happily celebrate with this production. It has been a ton of fun to discover the world of our musical through both the eyes of the Bard and the King. They have not failed to provide both fun and excitement. Taking a cue from both of them, we are giving a nod to both our inspirations in a couple of different ways. First, you will see that our ensemble, much like a Greek chorus, comments and infuses themselves into the plots of the main characters through song and dance, of course. We want them to stand out by placing them in black and white which is another tip of the hat to the black and white movies of Elvis Presley. Likewise, from them, we have two special characters—our Muses of Love—that represent God’s sovereignty over one’s journey. Shakespeare would have chosen fairies to help move things along. Our Muses help to push and pull our main characters—who are dressed in vibrant colors—towards who they are truly meant to be with by the time our story finishes. Other interesting Shakespearean things to look out for are “two star-crossed lovers” also known as two characters who have families that don’t want them to be together, and a young woman who mistakenly thinks that cross-dressing will help her win the affections of another. Elvis gets a nod with our choreography as it reflects the grip and freedom of the 1950s along with his hip-shakes and rhythmic claps. We have also had fun exploring the nicknames of a good Elvis movie with things like “honey man,” “brother man,” and “little man.” Give it a try. Go on, just let it roll of your tongue! You will see that All Shook Up definitely delivers on the twisted story—thank you Shakespeare. On the singing—thank you Elvis Presley. And on the dancing—thank you 1950s. So, if you feel a little shoulder shake coming on while you’re in your seat…it’s ok. Join in the jive!

Shout Outs Kailey, we are so proud of you, and we love that you are using your gifts and talents to sing, dance, act, and glorify God, all while having a blast! Love, Mom, Dad, and Luca Kathryn, we are all shook up over the amazing young woman you are and so inspired by your fearlessness in going after your pursuits. Have fun and enjoy yourself! We love you! Mom, Dad and Sam To our sweet and talented granddaughter, Kathryn, who continues to be a shining star to family and friends, you make us proud.
