You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown
Original Direction for this verion of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” by Michael Mayer Originally produced in New York by Arthur Whitelaw and Gene Persson
Carter, It has truly been a blessing to watch you perform in each of the MS plays and musicals. Just like your character, Schroeder, you are an intelligent and talented young man. We could not be more proud of you! Love, Mom, Dad, and Jordan
Director’s Note One of my fondest memories of my Grandpa Frank was his chuckle when he would read the funny pages. For those of you who are too young to know what the funny pages are, it’s the cartoon strips in the newspaper. I remember sitting at an early morning table with him eating breakfast or—later on—sharing a cup of coffee. He’d get that twinkle in his eye then say, “Stephie, look at this one.” His favorite was Dennis the Menace, but he also loved Peanuts. What was so endearing to him, and now me, about The Peanut Gang, was their innocent outlook on life’s obvious. This always made him chuckle, and it has brought happiness to my life these past few months. A great cartoon writer knows how to state the good and obvious of life in a simple manner. They aren’t going for the laugh, they are just commenting on life in a unique way. Charles M. Schultz did just that. As a result, we have these wonderfully empathetic kids with grown up thoughts. They are funny and sweet because they touch a piece of our soul that makes us say—“Yes, I totally get that!” I get that frustration, friend, confu sion, or happiness. At the top of our story, you will note that our favorite Block Head is very hopeful and optimistic about his day. He says, “I get a very positive feeling about things.” What a great outlook to have! To begin every day in hope is a gift from God. No doubt as Charlie—and we—go about our days, the hope can ebb and flow. However, when we come to the end of it, if we can keep looking up knowing that our hope comes from the Lord, all those ebbs and flows wash away. We wake up again with a renewed hope the next day. In Romans 8:28, Paul writes, “And we know that all things come together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” When we are called to God’s purpose, we know that good is to come. Good is hope and peace and rest. Our love reflecting upward towards Him reminds us that it will all come together for our good. Now, by the time you leave our presence today, you will have heard this phrase, “For happiness is anyone and anything at all, that’s loved by you.” Isn’t that the truth? While that person, place, or thing might not always make us happy, if we truly love it or them, we are filled with happiness. For those of us who acknowledge Jesus Christ as our King, this phrase has a deeper meaning. We know that He loves us and has demonstrated that love to us again and again. In fact, “We love Him because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). So, isn’t it cool that this Gang helps us make the connection that since we love Christ, happiness is just waiting there at the end of the day for us? Ultimate happiness and hope is the One that’s loved by you. Enjoy the Show! Stephanie Simmons Middle School Director
