Director’s Notes What is love? This is the question that William Shakespeare sought to tackle in his famous play Romeo and Juliet. Nearly everyone is familiar with the play. I personally read it when I was in the 8th grade, and I imagine that most Americans read it at some point during their middle or high school career. I love Romeo and Juliet. It’s my personal favorite of all Shakespeare’s works, ranking above the great tragedies like Hamlet, Othello, and the dreaded “Scottish Play”, whose name I dare not speak in a theater. But I fear that many people misinterpret the true meaning of the play. When people describe a pair of sweethearts as “a modern-day Romeo and Juliet”, I feel ever so slightly irked. Romeo and Juliet is not a story about the beauty of love, despite common belief. If it were, it wouldn’t be classified as a tragedy. Instead, it’s a story about love’s corrupted, bitter twin, lust. Lust often has the appearance of love, but it is most assuredly not. Love is divine, lust is sinful. Are there similarities between love and lust? Sure. Both cause people to behave in ways that they wouldn’t normally. Both cause people to cleave to one another. But love does not cause people to kill out of envy. In the book of 1 Corinthians, we are given a description of what love really is. I’m sure most of the Wesleyan community is familiar with these verses. “Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” To me, that doesn’t sound like it’s describing Romeo and Juliet’s relationship. In fact, it seems to be more of the opposite. Romeo and Juliet head into love impatiently, with no regard for others. Love does not dishonor others, yet five people die in the “starcrossed lovers” passionate endeavor. In directing Romeo and Juliet: A Tale of Two Balconies, I wanted to show the tale of Romeo and Juliet not as a romantic love story that people should aspire to, but rather to remind people of how dangerous the behavior that these Shakespearean characters engage in really is. I found the modern take on the story that the script provides to be comedic, yes, but also offering some true insight into the irrationality of their behavior. Enjoy the show, Davis Olds (12) Director Romeo and Juliet: A Tale of Two Balconies

Director’s Notes Everyone has had the experience of assigned reading. We’ve all been introduced to classics, philosophies, biographies and tortured by impenetrable Shakespearean soliloquies. We read to remember, and we read to learn. But students can’t learn all that much if the only real reading they do is from Spark Notes, and that is the problem Bellum High has run into for the last several years. This playful one act comedy follows the attempts of an enthusiastic theater troop trying to capture and adapt the plot, life lessons, and intricacies of popular novels in a way they believe will capture the attention of the youths. Though their objective seems simple enough, they soon run into challenges that teach them that the nuances of a four-hundred-page epic cannot easily be translated into a two-minute play. As life speeds by and attention spans dwindle, we gravitate towards an easier way out. We rarely find time to see things—such as long novels—through. We want the lesson without the learning, the moral without the story. But what I’ve learned through the process of directing this show is that the things that matter take time. Through vision boarding, brainstorming, and character work, we were able to make this script our own, create something we’re proud of, and grow from the experience. There’s always the choice to cut corners, but we often don’t realize what we sacrifice in doing so. I am proud of what the cast and I have accomplished together. We hope you enjoy our production of Every Novel You’ve Read in High School in 25 Minutes or Less. Enjoy the show, Brenna McConnell (12) Director Every Novel You’ve Read in High School in 25 Minutes or Less
