The Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is one of the oldest botanic gardens in the world. The garden was founded in 1638 as a medicinal herb garden, and in four centuries developed into an unique botanic garden with a blooming collection. Nowadays, the garden is an oasis of tranquility in the midst of the bustling citylife of Amsterdam. De garden offers a beautiful setting to stroll through, outdoors and indoors. From waving palm trees to dry deserts, a visit to the Hortus is like a small trip around the world. De Hortus is open every day from 10 am to 5 pm.

EDITORIAL
EDITORIAL It’s really getting on now. Our new Hotel Jakarta on Java island in Amsterdam.
It all started eight years ago, when we were in talks with the council of Amsterdam regarding the license for building a new hotel on this beautiful location – Java island. That lasted a few years, until the Amsterdam city council announced that they would license the construction via a tendering procedure. That was in 2014. The requirements were strict and the council had high sustainability goals in mind for this hotel development plan.
Photo Amy van Leiden
We sent in our concept plan together with architect Bjarne Mastenbroek of SeARCH and Jacco Paauw of engineering company DGMR. We finished in the top three in the first round and moved on to the next. We energetically and ambitiously detailed our plans even more. The final result was a beautiful transparent building with two hundred rooms with a balcony, a subtropical indoor garden in the atrium, and all desired facilities such as a restaurant, skybar, swimming pool, wellness centre, meeting rooms, bakery, coffee bar and parking garage. With the solar panels, heat and cold storage, triple glazing, extra balcony panels and many other energy saving doodads, we surpassed the council’s stringent sustainability requirements. Additionally, we sought out collaborations with professional partners such as the Hortus Botanicus and the Tropenmuseum. And we won! It was really great. During the various meetings that we had with the residents of Java island, we learned that they were happy with a Dutch family company like WestCord Hotels winning the contest. We were welcomed with open arms from day one.
The name Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam was chosen specifically as an ode to the special history of this location. In the olden days, this exact location was home to one of the offices of the Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland (Dutch Steam Shipping Company). From 1910 to 1970, ships would depart from here to head for the Dutch East Indies. Throughout those years they had transported millions of tons of goods and hundreds of thousands of passengers. Do you see the similarities to Hotel New York in Rotterdam? There, people headed ‘West’ and from the Java island people headed ‘East’.
If you’re building a Hotel Jakarta, you have to have visited the city at the very least. That’s why we travelled to Jakarta in June of 2015. A beautiful and busy metropolis, with many faces. Over the course of our journey, we met very special people and visited beautiful places. It was unforgettable, finding an oasis of Dutch colonial heritage, in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Jakarta. Very disconcerting to see that in a city on the other side of the world. The governor’s house, the Kunstkring, and Café Batavia, where you can get ordinary traditional Dutch food! It was a wonderful trip. And now we’re here, at the opening of Hotel Jakarta. An energy neutral hotel where we aim for high(er) levels of sustainability in other ways. THE INTERIOR OF Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam
WESTCORD’S INTERIOR DESIGNER ETHIEN DUY PHAM HAS RECENTLY BECOME RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OVERALL DESIGN OF WESTCORD HOTELS. HIS STYLE? HE CALLS IT ‘MINIMAL CHIC WITH ASIAN INFLUENCES’ AND THAT SUITS THE NEW ENERGY NEUTRAL HOTEL JAKARTA, LOCATED ON THE JAVA ISLAND IN AMSTERDAM. THE CONSTRUCTION OF WOOD, STEEL AND ALUMINIUM IS SUPPOSED TO GIVE THE HOTEL A SUSTAINABLE-INDUSTRIAL CHARACTER. ADDITIONALLY THERE’S A LOT OF GLASS, ENSURING A LOT OF TRANSPARENCY, LIGHT AND VIEWS.

“MY WORK IS MY PASSION AND WE WANT TO MAKE TO MAKE A VERY BEAUTIFUL HOTEL, THAT REALLY WOWS THE HOTEL GUESTS!”
Ethien says: “The rooms at Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam will be modern with a timeless character. The chosen furniture are made of wood with an industrial style and they give the hotel its contemporary look. The public area will be beautiful, of course, with a lot of light and a subtropical garden in the middle of the hotel. I’m responsible for the overall design of all WestCord Hotels. That means in this case that I work on the designing and the concept of all rooms, but also the public areas and the furniture in the hotel. Using visualisation, we can make Hotel Jakarta very accessible and with the combination of light and the subtropical garden, we can offer hotel guests a unique experience. It’s an opportunity for me to be involved in the design from the very beginning, that way I can shape everything according to my vision. From design sketches to the custom furniture and the room styling – everything fits together. It doesn’t end there either. I’m also a part of the communication between suppliers, the architect, the installers, the contractors and the hotel managers. I guard the budget, and I am responsible for quality and checking the furniture. My biggest challenge is to make a design that will be stylish and timeless ten years from now, and I want to give the building a soul, of course. The furniture has to fit with the hotel’s image and its style has to match the architecture and transparency of the building. It’s an interesting challenge, and it’s a lot of fun to me. I do everything in terms of design and styling together with Harry and Jennifer Westers. My work is my passion and we want to make a very beautiful hotel, that really wows the hotel guests!”

HOTEL JAKARTA AMSTERDAM HOTEL JAKARTA IS STARTING TO TAKE ITS FINAL SHAPE. BUILDING IS GOING SMOOTHLY, DESPITE IT BEING NO EASY TASK. BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER CONSTRUCTION, SOME IMPORTANT ASPECTS MUST BE KEPT IN MIND. TO WORK AS SUSTAINABLY AS POSSIBLE, WE’RE WORKING ACCORDANCE WITH BREEAM PRINCIPLES. WHAT ARE THOSE? WE’LL EXPLAIN.

That’s why the entire outside of the hotel is fitted with solar panels. The roof of the atrium consists of four hundred square metres of custom made and insulated solar panels. A special trait of these panels is that they let

WestCord Times IN THE NEWS Two Escape Rooms on the ss Rotterdam · Sleeping with a robot in Hotel Delft · Facades chosen for the new Hotel Groningen
ESCAPE ROOM ON THE SS ROTTERDAM THE NETHERLANDS’ BEST BEACH PAVILION!
Not even three months had passed since the grand (re)opening of the completely re-done Badhuys on Vlieland, when it was awarded the ‘Best Beach Pavilion of the Netherlands’ award! The selection was based on ‘mystery visits’ and a vote. The jury gave compliments on the interior with its industrial elements, sustainable character, eye for a clean environment and great service. There isn’t a possible better reward for hard work than this!
At the end of August the time had finally come: after months of preparation and testing, the Escape Room has been opened. The Escape Room’s story is based on the captains mysterious secrets. The story takes place in the nineties; in the era when the Premier Cruises shipping company took over the ship from the Holland America Line and the ship was rechristened ss Rembrandt. The Escape Room consists of two identical rooms that used to be cooling cells and are located on the D-Deck, in the bottom of the ship. Participants have an hour to discover all of the captain’s secrets. You do the Escape Room with a minimum of four people and a maximum of eight each time. If you have a large friend group, you can make teams and race to see who can escape first!

FUTURE PLANS: HOTEL GRONINGEN Have you heard? WestCord is opening a new hotel – in Groningen! In the Oostwand on the Grote Markt, in the middle of the city centre. The facade designs were presented in November of last year to the city residents. They were allowed to give their opinions on the plans drawn by German architect Thomas Müller. A choice has been made; they’re going to be historic stepped gables with straight walls. The impressions are certainly impressive – we just need to wait with building. We’re expected to start in late 2018.
NICE TO MEET YOU! We would like to introduce: Joris van Velzen, Food & Beverage Manager at Hotel de Veluwe. He lived in Haarlem all his life until he moved to the other side of the country for love. “It’s a big change, with all the calmness and space this new place gives me, but you get used to it pretty quickly,” says Joris. The fact that Hotel de Veluwe ‘gives just a little extra’ is the reason why it’s different to other hotels, is what the newcomer believes. He continues: “It’s precisely the personal approach that we offer guests that make this a nice place to work, which makes me feel right at home!”
NEW AT ART HOTEL AMSTERDAM The Art Hotel Amsterdam has recently gained two new permanent residents. The two supermen have retired, so it was high time for something new and that something is two cows. Meet Batman and Robin! They will now guard the hotel guests and West Amsterdam. We are happy to welcome them.
FASHION’S HANGOUT
Only recently, the Fashion Hotel in Amsterdam got a proper lounge: the Fashion’s Hangout. Located on the first floor, just above the bar. Guests can work and relax here. There are a number of places where you can work in peace and you can play with the various gaming consoles, chill out on the couches and enjoy snacks and drinks. Access to the lounge costs a little more but you get your money’s worth!

DOKTER DEEN CHAMPIONS IN ROTTERDAM
From the 20th until the 27th of august, the Dutch Women’s volleyball team played for a ticket to the world champions in Japan 2018, in Rotterdam. During this week the entire Dutch team and their staff stayed at Hotel New York. It was quite an experience for the volleyball players and they were definitely pampered with dinners at NY Basement, a ride with the water taxi to training and breakfasts’ in the big restaurant. The result? They made it to the world championships and we have twenty-three new ambassadors for Hotel New York!
SWEET DREAMS IN DELFT
Sleeping with a robot... that sounds very strange. Four ambitious engineers from TU Delft had the bright idea to develop a robot that can help people with sleeping issues sleep better. Somnox is your sleeping partner who will take you to bed and assist you. How does it work? It’s a huggable robot that can, for example, stimulate your breathing to make you fall asleep quicker, and sleep deeper. Also, the robot makes sounds that make you sleepy. At the moment, there is only a Somnox prototype and it’s available for pre-orders. However: Hotel Delft organised a collaboration with the developers and now Somnox can be tested by hotel guests. If you want to test the robot, go to westcordhotels.nl/somnox.

The recordings for the latest season of ‘Dokter Deen’ were done in June and July. Naturally, these took place on Vlieland! Fun fact: the cast and crew slept at Strandhotel Seeduyn.
JUST LIKE IN THE MOVIE A few years ago, the ss Rotterdam was the decor for the movie ‘Bobby en de Geestenjagers’ (Bobby and the Ghost Hunters) and last summer there were new recordings being done on the ship. This time it was for the new movie ‘K3 Love Cruise’. The girls from K3 go on a cruise as special guests – like Nicolette van Dam, Winston Post and Tim Douwsma. The movie will be airing in cinemas in December 2017.

SPA DAY WORK HARD, PLAY HARD. WHAT’S BETTER AFTER A HARD DAY’S WORK, SITTING IN MEETINGS OR WANDERING THROUGH THE CITY, THAN TO RELAX IN A SAUNA OR A POOL? OR HOW ABOUT A MASSAGE? YOU CAN DO ALL OF THAT AT THE HOTEL JAKARTA AMSTERDAM.
#50
The wellness part of Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam is located at the back. It’s a centre of peace on Java island with a direct view on the IJ from the pool and the treatment rooms. Doing laps in the pool is far from a chore. After swimming, you can have a seat in one of the relaxation chairs, read a book or simply watch the boats go by. The treatment rooms have a modern decor with Indonesian influences to really feel the relaxing vibes. Here, you can enjoy a massage, a facial, get waxed, or have a pedicure or manicure. In the fitness area, you can get your daily dose of exercise. Modern fitness equipment is available for use for a workout with a view over the IJ.
Hotel guests can enjoy the facilities, of course, but guests from outside are also welcome. The wellness centre has its own entrance on the street side, next to the bakery. From the luxurious foyer you take the stairs up to one of the five treatment rooms. We’ll see you soon, right?
SUSTAINABLE BEAUTY When entering the spa of Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam, you definitely will see the amenities of Comfort Zone. The products of the Italian skin care brand will give optimal results for every skin type and condition and an overall sense of wellbeing for body and mind. The exclusive “Science-based Conscious Formulas™” ensures the products’ maximum performance and safety for face and body. Rich in natural-origin ingredients (up to 99 per cent), they are free from silicones, parabens and animal derivatives. To strive for sustainable beauty is not only our mission, but also our responsibility to the world we live in.

CULTURE During your trip to Indonesia you will notice that certain things in Indonesia are different to what we do in Europe. Indonesians care about personal hygiene. They bathe at least twice a day. Indonesian bathing (‘mandi’) is different than in the West. While modern houses and many hotels now have showers thanks to western influences, you will sometimes encounter a traditional mandi-tub. Don’t get into the big tub of water in the bathroom (‘kamar mandi’) but take a small bucket and throw the water over your body.
MANNERS Indonesians are generally very friendly and open. Wherever you go in this country, you will often be greeted with ‘hello mister’ by children and even some adults (even if you are a woman). Asking all sorts of personal questions about age, salary, religion and other things is normal in Indonesian cultures. The only negative to all the cheerful chatter is that Indonesians occasionally lose track of time and are late to appointments on a regular basis.
