Karin Bloemen is a singer and cabaret performer who has been attracting attention with her distinctive appearance, beautiful songs, and dazzling performances and theater shows from as early as 1983. In her show ‘Kameleon’, she said that she would end up in the gutter in fifteen years – and those fifteen years have passed by now. Does she really have a problem with alcohol? Will she follow in the footsteps of stars like Janis Joplin and Amy Winehouse? And how unrestrained does Karin actually get when she’s had a glass too many? Is there anyone who can escape her sharp tongue in these cases? You will get the answers to these pinching questions in ‘Witte Nar’, the show that Bloemen is currently performing in theaters; cloaked in a lavish show like you’ve come to expect from her, and accompanied by her equally amazing band.

Architecture on Amsterdam’s Java Island THE MOMENT THE TIP OF THE JAVA ISLAND BECAME AVAILABLE TO BUILD A HOTEL, WESTCORD HOTELS IMMEDIATELY TOOK THEIR OPPORTUNITY. TOGETHER WITH THE ARCHITECTS OF SEARCH, A WONDERFUL PLAN WAS DEVISED, WHICH IS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION. DISCOVER OUR NEW HOTEL JAKARTA!
The Netherlands is a water country and it is not surprising that WestCord Hotels is fascinated by water! The sea is in our genes and in our legs. Whereas the group started out on the island of Vlieland, it has grown into a large chain including the ss Rotterdam and Hotel New York.
The latter of the two makes this new hotel exceptionally unique. Where people formerly departed for New York from the Rotterdam docks, they left the Java and KNSM Island to travel to ‘the East’. Hotel Jakarta will be built exactly on that spot. Hotel Jakarta will be a wedge-shaped constructi-

the Tropenmuseum. This museum is familiar with the centuries-old relationship between the Netherlands and Asia and has some great ideas on how to bring this back to life.
The Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam has also played a major role in the development, because the atrium of the hotel will include a real Java Garden. As a result, a tranquil atmosphere is created, which is not only beautiful to look at, but also a nice contrast to the hectic pace of the city. In addition, with © SeARCH
its many plants, this garden can enrich the hotel’s kitchen and food. It also contributes to the sustainable nature of the hotel. Furthermore, the Hortus has connections with the Dutch East Indies past. The Hortus has been around since 1638 and at the time it was an inspiration for all Amsterdam merchants. The captains of the VOC ships discovered many interesting plants during their voyages. They returned with their findings from five continents, which were planted in the botanical garden. The garden became an appealing place for pharmacists, physicians, and surgeons. Later it became a tourist attraction (which it still is today).

guests from home, abroad, and local residents are also welcomed. Whether you’re a tourist or in Amsterdam for business – everyone is welcome! In addition to the hotel rooms, there is also a restaurant, café, and bar in the Java Garden. All with a contemporary Asian style and a subtropical atmosphere.
Hotel Jakarta will be the living room for the curious world traveler who is looking for new cultures and challenges. In this way, it promises to be a multicultural melting pot and a vibrant part of the city of Amsterdam. One can also discover various world cuisines; from Javanese a la carte to Indian warong and from the international coffeehouse to the oyster bar and the sky bar on the top floor ... There will also be room for small, flexible catering concepts, both inside and in the immediate vicinity of the hotel, resulting in a wide variety of cuisines.
In addition to the broad cultural offerings, there will also be local and international facilities in the areas of wellness, shopping, culture, and entertainment. Guests can get acquainted with and tasPicture Bastiaan van Musscher

RESTAURANT COMES FROM RESTORATION: RESTORING HEALTH. IT’S ONE OF THE MANY WISDOMS THAT ROB BAAN (59), OWNER OF KOPPERT CRESS, SHARES WITH US. WITH HIS SUSTAINABLE AND – ABOVE ALL – LEADING COMPANY, HE GROWS MICRO VEGETABLES THAT ADD FLAVOR, INNOVATION, COLOR, WELCOMING SCENTS, AND DECORATION TO THE BEST KITCHENS IN THE WORLD. KOPPERT CRESS GROWS MICRO VEGETABLES. WHAT ARE THESE? ‘The things we grow can be best compared with a particular type of garden cress – everyone knows it. We found these in a lot of flavors all over the world. These plants are very small. Because they have to defend themselves to the big bad world outside, they produce a lot of antioxidants. As a result, these plants are extra healthy.’
DO YOU CREATE THESE FLAVORS YOURSELF? ‘No, the flavors are already in the plants, and the type of flavor differs per plant. Our products are natural; no genetic modification techniques are involved. The flavors are pure and come straight from nature, which is the only place where we look for new products. Recently, for example, I was in Brazil, where you can find all kinds of plants in the jungle that Indians eat. And if they can eat them, so can we. So it’s a matter of bringing the plant to the Netherlands, figure out how we can grow it, and prepare it in such a way that the chef is happy.’
WHICH OF THE MICRO VEGETABLES (CRESSES) THAT YOU’RE GROWING PRODUCES YOUR FAVORITE FLAVOR? ‘Ha ha, that’s like asking someone which child is his favorite. To me, every flavor comes with a story, knowledge, and a history. So no, I can’t say that I have a favorite.’
ROB BAAN
The man behind Koppert Cress #70
DO YOU HAVE ANY FLAVORS IN MIND THAT YOU WOULD STILL LIKE TO FIND? ‘Yes! Sweet, salty, sour, and bitter are, of course, the basic flavors. I would absolutely love it if I could get people to like bitter, like chicory bitter. So I’d like to find a tasty version of bitter.’
ARE YOU THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD DOING THIS? ‘We are very unique. We are the ones who developed this, but many people copy us. And that’s not surprising; we germinate
seeds, which is – in a manner of speaking – the oldest profession in the world. Everyone can do this; there’s nothing secret there. What is our secret? It’s the manner in which we find and offer products and the attention we devote to the safety and quality of food in the process – year round.’
WHAT’S THE DESTINATION OF YOUR PRODUCTS? ‘Ten percent stay in the Netherlands, and our other

The rise and downfall of the VOC

world.
The Batavia
The original Batavia was built in 1628 by order of the Dutch East India Company on the Peper Docks in Amsterdam. It was a return ship, specially designed to make the long journey to and from the Indies. On June 4, 1629, the ship, including the 332 crew members on board, sank off the coast of Western Australia (on its first trip to Java). Later, the ship was rebuilt to its original state. was maintained, was banned. The trade shifted from expensive luxury goods to cheaper bulk goods. Profit margins declined considerably. However, the final blow was the increasing influence of the English and French East India Companies. January 1, 1800, was the end of the VOC.
NAVAL HERO Today, more than two centuries later, the story of the VOC period is still often told. For example, the film ‘Michiel de Ruyter’ became a huge hit in cinemas. De Ruyter is widely regarded as the greatest admiral of his time and played a crucial role during grand naval wars. It comes as no surprise that he was a naval hero to many. How often do you still hear of that title..? Michiel de

Dutch quickly learned when they arrived in Asia. In fact, there was little interest in European goods in trade countries such as Mokka, Persia, Guljarat, Malabar, Ceylon, the Coromandel, Bengal, Ayutthaya, Cambodia, Burma, Vietnam, Formosa, China, Japan, Java, and the Moluccas. Smart as our ancestors were, they decided to create their own currency to trade with: the VOC penny.

Trading with other countries wasn’t that easy. Not all countries were waiting for those strange white people who were suddenly very interested in their goods. Furthermore, the Dutch were not the only country at sea; the Portuguese were just as eager to get their share of the profits. Thus, the Dutch decided to deploy an army where necessary. By 1700, half of the VOC workforce consisted of soldiers.
