EDITORIAL
MUSIC MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND! Recently, we were at the “List, Shaffy and Piaf” concert premiere. Renée van Wegberg sings the works of these famous artists. In 2018, Renée already played the lead role in the musical about the life of Liesbeth List. We were there too. Astonishing how Renée had crept into Liesbeth’s skin and managed to approach her specific voice exactly. Goosebumps. Liesbeth List grew up on the island of Vlieland as a foster daughter of the lighthouse keepers couple Jaap and Marie List. Harry went to school with Liesbeth and we have maintained a warm relationship with her for years.
Terschelling also has its own celebrities: Hessel van der Kooij and his daughter Tess. Hessel has the Groene Weide Café in the village Hoorn on Terschelling and he has been performing there since 1972. We have been there often. In 1985 Hessel broke through with his song “Back to Terschelling” and in 1991 Photo Amy van Leiden
his first major concert was in Ahoy Rotterdam. On March 14, 2020, Hessel returns to Rotterdam with his daughter Tess. Together they will give a grand concert in Ahoy. In this magazine you’ll read an interview with these two great artists!
Speaking of Rotterdam, in 2020 they will host the Eurovision Songfestival! We have had a new phenomenon since May of this year: Duncan Laurence. When we first heard his song we had our doubts, but he has been the favorite for the final victory from the start. It remained incredibly nerve-wracking, but Duncan kept singing “Arcade” flawlessly and put down an impressive performance. Then the race started for the many interested cities that wanted to organize the Songfestival in the Netherlands. Also the cities where our hotels are located participated. Leeuwarden soon fell out and even Amsterdam. We still had Rotterdam in the race and it has become the rightful winner. A great international promotion for the Netherlands and we fully trust Rotterdam as the host for this amazing event. The city of pride, guts and glory.
We are very proud of the interview with singer Maan. She won “The Voice of Holland” in 2016 and was awarded as Best Singer of the Year at the 100% NL Awards in February of this year. Her song “Zo kan het dus ook” was climbing the charts this summer! This is about her relationship with Tony Junior, a famous Dutch DJ. They were recently in the Beau van Erven Dorens late night show and that became a disarming and nice conversation.
By the way, when we talk about DJs, we can be extremely proud of our number one export product in the Netherlands. Martin Garrix has been at the top of the Top 100 list of best DJs for three years and Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, Don Diablo and Afrojack are in the top 10. Amazing, right!
In this HARRY! many more celebrities. Read the column by radio host Giel Beelen and Ruben from The Partysquad launched his clothing line at Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam. On the cover our two own musical celebrities: Mark and Henriëtte.
In short, a lot to read in our newest edition of HARRY! magazine. Enjoy reading!
Warm regards, Harry en Jennifer Westers

SHE’S JUST 22, BUT THE ENERGETIC MAAN DE STEENWINKEL LOVES GIVING INTERVIEWS TO TALK ABOUT HER WORLD OF MUSIC. GROWING UP IN BERGEN, MAAN WAS ALREADY PERFORMING AS AN ENTERTAINER AT HOME, SINGING INTO A MICROPHONE WHILE HER FATHER RECORDED. SHE DEBUTED AT ‘THE VOICE OF HOLLAND’ WITH HER SINGLE ‘THE POWER OF LOVE’. SINCE THEN, HER LIFE HAS BEEN A ROLLER-COASTER OF EXPERIENCES, MEETING NEW PEOPLE. SHE IS STILL DRIVEN BY A PASSION FOR TOUCHING PEOPLE’S HEARTS. ‘GIVE ME A STAGE AND I’LL GIVE IT MY ALL.’

Claim to fame
If there has been one artist who has grown a lot in recent years, it’s Maan. Just three years after winning ‘The Voice of Holland’, the singer has built a career full of golden and platinum records. In 2018 she won two Buma NL Awards for ‘Blijf Bij Mij’, and she won the singer of the year award at the 100%NL Awards. And that’s not all: the multi-disciplinary artist also works with the label 8Ball, has her own clothing line Moonlight, collaborations with Kris Kross Amsterdam, Bizzey and Tabitha, John Fraser, Ronnie Flex to name a few, and a golden album for ‘Waar ga je heen’.

loyal audience, but the director hoped to appeal to a younger audience as well. In order to change that, the Concertgebouw organised the Robeco Zomerconcerten and Zondagochtendconcerten. Those series have started a revolution in the audiences that the Concertgebouw is attracting. They’ve also managed to get occasional visitors in the doors: the Zomerconcerten draw a 100,000 visitors, while the Zondagochtendconcerten sell 50,000 tickets. That gives young, promising musicians a chance and lets the Concertgebouw get with the times. The broader audience was also achieved by scheduling world music concerts, jazz concerts (The Concertgebouw has its own jazz orchestra), and youth concerts. Over 55,000 young people from the Netherlands visited the Concertgebouw through educational projects, children’s concerts, school outings, and using special discounts.

SPRINTING TO THE CONCERTGEBOUW The notion that only posh old-age pensioners with a passion for classical music visit the Concertgebouw is far from the current reality. In fact, it’s kids, parents, jazz enthusiasts, and André Hazes or Ilse de Lange fans who now flock to this magical place, to name but a few. Young people like to experience everything, to get a taste. Are you under 30, and do you love great experiences? Like a concert in the Concertgebouw? Preferably

From rib-eye to radish and from salmon fillet to sweet potato; our spotlights were aimed at food. After all, a picture says more than a thousand words, doesn’t it? Our food photographer visited all WestCord Hotels to capture the most delicious meals from their best angles.
SEPTEMBER = HEALTHY MONTH Why wait for the new year to make healthy resolutions when you can start today? This year WestCord Hotels pronounced September to be Healthy Month. What that means? A month full of healthy activities, challenges, and food. Our colleagues from all over the country took on the challenge and wouldn’t quit. Except when it came to smoking, as even a special seminar on quitting smoking was held. Way to go!
IS THERE ANY CHAMPAGNE LEFT? The champagne corks keep popping and cake after cake is being cut; there is much to celebrate! After WestCord Hotels’ anniversary, three hotels are taking the spotlight to celebrate their anniversary this year. WTC Hotel Leeuwarden opened its doors ten years ago, as did Fashion Hotel Amsterdam. Hotel Schylge on Terschelling is even blowing out 25 candles! In order to celebrate that properly, the hotels were going all out. The WTC hotel, for instance, introduced its own beer and a ‘wheel of adventure’, Hotel Schylge had its own festive cocktail launch.
PRE JAZZ FESTIVAL
Delft and music go hand in hand, and jazz in particular. On 22 August, the Jazz Festival returned to the city. WestCord Hotel Delft offered a taste to get people in the mood. Before the festival, they had planned the Pre Jazz Festival with the excellent jazz sounds of the Daniel Clason Sextet. They played a mix between contemporary jazz and cool jazz.
FROM THE TROPENMUSEUM’S TREASURE ROOM
In order to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam, guests can marvel at the new exhibition from the Tropenmuseum’s national collection. It features a selection of Yogya and Riau silver’. In the 1930s, a lot of silverware was being made in Yogyakarta on Java, mostly for Europeans living in Indonesia. The silverware was richly decorated with images of lotus flowers and peacocks. After Indonesia gained its independence in 1945, the production of Yogya silver started to shrink, until it got a new boost in the ‘70s as a result of tourism. The former sultanate of Riau on Sumutra, strategically situated on the trade route running through the strait of Malakka, was known for its silver trinkets that were made from silver coins.

The decor of the Maiden Voyage Gala 2019 was entirely in the spirit of that first journey. Even the menu, the waiters, and the personal attention echoed the 1950s aboard a grand ship.
CLEANERS ASSEMBLE! Armed with litter pickers and refuse sacks, Hotel New York’s team went out into the street in April. The goal was to pick up all the litter in the area surrounding the hotel. By challenging as many employees and other businesses to join the effort, we can keep the Wilhelminapier clean! Nowadays these wonderful people do this every two weeks, and other WestCord Hotels have followed suit. Both Art Hotel Amsterdam and WTC Hotel Leeuwarden have grabbed their pickers to keep their neighbourhoods spick and span.

‘SMILING IS FREE TODAY’ In order to focus fully on his job as General Manager at The Market Hotel in Groningen, Niek Strous left the beautiful island of Vlieland behind. His old colleagues from the ZeeVaert weren’t going to let him leave empty handed, of course, and presented him with a unique gift: the one and only ZeeVaert trumpet. The nostalgic instrument, on which Niek played the Dutch anthem many, many nights, has been engraved with his motto: Smiling is Free Today!
ON THE JOB WestCord Fashion Hotel Amsterdam partnered with the ROC of Amsterdam for their House of Hospitality project. In three years’ time, 18 students will train at the hotel to become hospitality professionals. With this collaboration, the Fashion Hotel hopes to contribute to House of Hospitality’s goal to make Amsterdam the most tourist-friendly region in Europe. General Manager Patrick Wolffenbuttel: ‘It’s a great challenge to train students at our hotel!’
BEE AWARE The roof of WestCord City Centre Hotel Amsterdam has recently started accommodating some very special guests: bees! Without bees, we wouldn’t have fruits, vegetables, clothing, animal products, nuts, or bio fuels. That’s why we do our very best to make our hotels as green and sustainable as possible. And home-made honey for breakfast, who can say no to that?
HARRY HAS THIS ROUND Full of ambiance, flavour, and informal fun: that’s Harry’s Borrel. 19 June saw the first edition of this event, organised by WestCord for its business relations in Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam. Art Hotel Amsterdam hosted the second edition on 10 October. A fine drink, delicious snacks, and lovely company... What more could a person want?
EMBARK YOUR ADVENTURE In the last ‘HARRY!’ we introduced our readers to Joan, our very own Hospitality Trainer. These days she travels all over the country to share her hospitality industry experience at our hotels. It marks the start of our ‘Embark on Your Adventure’ training, aimed at orienting new colleagues within WestCord Hotels!
NEW HEIGHTS IN GRUNN The highest point of The Market Hotel and that of our neighbours in Groningen, Merckt, has been reached! That needed to be celebrated. An actual bridge was built for the occasion. It let guests cross between the buildings in spectacular fashion during the festivities. Talk about ‘high points’!

WESTCORD’S BEST NATURALLY, ALL OF THE PEOPLE WE EMPLOY AT WESTCORD ARE THE BEST, BUT SOME OF THEM ARE ALSO VERY GOOD MUSICIANS. DESPITE THEIR BUSY SCHEDULE, THEY ALWAYS MANAGE TO GET ON STAGE AND DO THEIR THING. MARK VAN DER MEULEN
DO YOU STILL HAVE A LOT OF RELATIVES AND FRIENDS ON AMELAND? ‘Definitely, many of my friends live there. My parents aren’t originally from the island, but they’ve been living there for 30 years. My oldest brother still lives there too. I try to visit at least once a month, usually when a performance is scheduled. When I know one is coming up, I’ll plan a weekend around it. I don’t spend as much time there as I’d like, but the travel is okay. It’s fun to keep playing this way and being a part of it. This autumn there are lots of village celebrations on the island. Our band is always a part of those.’
WHAT’S YOUR BEST ANECDOTE? ‘Our band always plays at SAIL Amsterdam. Four years ago, we played standing on an old lifeboat owned by one of our members. We had expected that the IJ would be full of boats with bands, but that wasn’t the

band. Whenever they have a big show, I’ll be there.’
WHAT IS YOUR CONNECTION TO MUSIC? ‘I’m from the island of Ameland, and that’s my connection to the most northern marching band in the Netherlands; the Hollumer Gromkes. I play the drums. It’s not formal at all. It really is a band for parties and celebrations. We’re 18 guys in total, and four of us are drummers. I live in Utrecht and work in Amsterdam, so I usually have to skip weekly practice, but I’m always at performances that were planned well in advance. We mostly perform on Ameland, but in other places too. During the carnival season, we sometimes head south, for instance.’
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PLAYING THE DRUMS? ‘I’ve been playing the drums since I was eight. When all my friends started playing football, I felt that wasn’t really for me – I wanted to make music. That’s when I started playing the drums. When I was about ten years old, I was already playing in a band. A few years later I joined the marching band and I’ve been playing there now for about ten years. I was fourteen when I started there, so my parents kept a close eye on me to make sure I stayed away from the beer, ha ha!’

me to really do something with it. She’s a DJ and producer. She inspired me to take singing lessons at the studio where she worked back then. That’s where I met Sacha Vee, real name Sacha van Beek – she was a contestant on “The Voice of Holland” in 2011. She became my coach and trained me for five years. I really wanted to learn to sing jazz. I could do it, but my ears weren’t fine-tuned enough yet for me to know what I was doing. When I learned, it opened up a whole new world to me. That’s when I knew: this is the music I want to make and the music I want people to hear. I think jazz is undervalued in the music industry, while jazz is exactly what we need. Jazz is like a food you need, “food for thought”. Especially in the Netherlands, jazz isn’t really big. The older generation likes it, but you sense that young people find it difficult to get into because they prefer pop and hip-hop. That’s great too, but not real music to me. I respect artists who are successful within the hip-hop and pop scenes, but what happened to other genres? They also deserve a lot of the love, but have simply been forgotten.’
DO YOU HAVE IDOLS YOU LOOK UP TO? ‘I really look up to Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder, Sade, and Michael Jackson. I’d listen to their music all day if I could.’

On the other side of the hotel, the Nieuwe Markt, we’re also creating a cosy terrace for about 50 guests. The development of the Nieuwe Markt makes this a very enjoyable place. Our roof terrace offers fun sitting nooks, lounge sofas, and a bar.

TREND EXPERT WOUTER VERKERK: ‘I’D RECOMMEND ANY BUSINESS TO INVEST IN A GOOD PLAYLIST, SOMETHING THAT SUITS THEIR CONCEPT AND SUITS WHAT THEY’RE TRYING TO COMMUNICATE’ ‘In today’s hospitality industry, it’s about offering a complete experience. Music definitely contributes to that’, according to hospitality expert Wouter Verkerk. Verkerk observed a big shift in the hospitality industry in recent years, based around three important aspects; the product, concept, and staff. In other words: what, how, and who. ‘About 50 years ago, 80 per cent about the “what”; the steak on your plate. As long as that was good, everything was great. The atmosphere or level of service simply wasn’t as important yet.’ According to Verkerk, that percentage today has changed to about three equal parts. The product and the concept have

VA VA VOOM OUTFITS ARTISTS’ MOST EXTRAVAGANT LOOKS? YES, WE OFTEN GET TO SEE THOSE AT THE MET GALA! THIS YEAR WAS NO DIFFERENT, WITH PEOPLE SHOWING OFF MARVELLOUS CREATIONS. THIS EVENT IN NEW YORK CITY IS ALL ABOUT RED CARPET LOOKS. LAST YEAR, THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART ANNOUNCED WHAT THE THEME WOULD BE, ‘CAMP: NOTES ON FASHION’.

ALTHOUGH CÉLINE DION ADMITTED TO E! NEWS THAT SHE DIDN’T COMPLETELY GET THE MET GALA THEME, SHE STILL MANAGED TO SHINE ON THE RED CARPET. CÉLINE DION WAS CALLED THE ‘NEW NIGHT KING’ IN THIS OSCAR DE LA RENTA LOOK 2

stop there; she walked the red carpet in three additional outfits. The outfits were by Brandon Maxwell. Lady Gaga wore Tiffany & Co jewellery. Lady Gaga had an entire script in her head to make her entrance as eye catching as possible.
2. CARDI B Cardi B was the red carpet in this dress with its enormous train by Thom Browne. The gown, made of tule and silk, was covered in about 30,000 feathers. Made by hand! Designer Thom Browne explained that 2,000 hours – yes, for real – of work went into the dress, which was made by 35 people. The train of rapper Cardi’s gala dress was about three metres wide, covering the entire width of the stairs to the entrance of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
3. CÉLINE DION Although Céline Dion admitted to E! News that she didn’t completely get the Met Gala theme, she still managed to shine on the red carpet. Céline Dion was called the ‘new Night King’ in this Oscar de la Renta look. The outfit was inspired by the Ziegfeld Follies. The look took 3,000 hours of work from 52 different people. On top of that, the crown weighed nearly ten kilos!

SAY YES TO JAZZ Delft is synonymous with jazz. As is tradition, Delft hosts the Jazz Festival Delft every year in August. It’s a festival of extremes and harmony. It’s a place for mainstream jazz, as well as ‘new’ sounds, influences from other musical genres, cultures, and art forms. Stichting Delfts Jazz believes in the power of music to bring people together, and its goal is to promote jazz music in and around Delft. Jazz Festival Delft aims to offer a broad and colourful programme of jazz in all its many forms. Worth a visit!

WHERE MUSIC IS MADE YOUNG WRITERS AND MUSICIANS ARE COMPETING FOR A SPOT IN ONE OF THE MANY WRITING RETREATS ORGANISED BY FAMOUS ARTISTS. ‘NEW WAVE’ – WHICH INCLUDED LIL’ KLEINE AND RONNIE FLEX – BOTH HAD THEIR BIG BREAK AFTER MEETING AT A WRITING RETREAT. BUT WHAT EXACTLY IS ONE OF THESE CAMPS, AND WHAT DO THE ARTISTS DO?

Writing retreats are unique experiences where people learn a lot. The chosen few who get to be part of a writing retreat work together with other artists. They join forces, sometimes attend extensive workshops ranging from voice classes to management, but mostly they write and practise. Experienced artists share their skills and help talents with writing. In turn the talents provide new insights for the established artists. Some artists organise their own writing retreat, with their band for instance. It allows them to relax in a new environment and focus entirely on making new music.
INSPIRATION IN ROOM 101 Dutch Singer Anouk found what she needed at WestCord Hotels to work on her album. Hotel New York in Rotterdam has strong appeal for Anouk. To her, Hotel New York’s rooms are the perfect place to seclude herself and focus on her music. It’s why her album is actually called Hotel New York. Anouk stayed in room 101 for several weeks in 2004. Almost all songs on the album came in to being there or in the

adjacent room where her fellow composer Bart van Veen was staying. The album’s songs were then recorded in a studio in the city that never sleeps, New York. Anouk’s album came out in December of 2004 and topped the Dutch Album Top 100 for twelve consecutive weeks. The singles ‘Girl’ and ‘Lost’ both reached number two in the Top 40.

READY FOR DEPARTURE Son Mieux, a Dutch pop formation from The Hague, is led by their frontman Camiel Meiresonne. Earlier this year they released their album, for which they had travelled to the Veluwe. During a radio interview, Camiel explained that writing doesn’t always come easy. Everything in his life was going great at the time, what did he have to write about? When his brother suggested the idea to go to the Veluwe, he found that he could write after all. That’s how they did it. Eventually they returned to the Veluwe several times to write more songs for the album.
travelled to Schier to work on a new album. With their sagging trousers and caps drawn down in front of their eyes they rap like never before. Record label Top Notch selected eleven rappers and six producers and sent them to Schiermonnikoog for ten days. There, away from the bustle of the city, the album ‘New Wave’ was created. ‘Album’ is not quite the right word though, as it is more of a project or a movement. It’s a collection of sounds from young, talented rappers contained in 19 songs. After the writing retreat, the rappers each had their big breaks one by one. In addition to Lil’ Kleine and Ronnie Flex, New Wave also made the careers of Bokoesam, Frenna, Idaly, and Lijpe, who were all there.
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT In March Spinnin’ Records brought together international top musicians in Nederhorst ten Berg to inspire each other and create new music. The group included the DJ duo Lucas & Steve, singer Niels Geusebroek, and DJ trio Kris Kross Amsterdam. Kris Kross Amsterdam already wrote a hit once during one of these writing retreats, entitled ‘Are You Sure’. According to them, they made this record with people they would otherwise not have met.

Of course, there’s a big difference between performing in our own café De Groene Weide or in Ahoy. Tess: ‘Each time is different, even at our café. We mostly tend to involve the audience, that makes it familiar. A big show is more directed, but we leave room for spontaneity. We’re on a large stage with a fourteen-person orchestra, but we aim for the same atmosphere as in the Groene Weide.’
NORTHWESTERN STORM Terschelling is the place to be for these islanders. To them, it’s about the diversity and the different seasons. Hessel: ‘Every season draws different people, and every night has a unique ambiance. It’s that variety that I love. I really enjoy the changing seasons on Terschelling.’ Tess: ‘I really like how varied it is. In the summer it can be hectic and crowded, while the winters are rugged and quiet. I lived in Amsterdam for a while. I loved it, but Terschelling is my home. For instance, if there’s a northwestern storm, my husband and I go to the beach.
Would you like to experience that island feeling of Terschelling and enjoy authentic music without any ridiculousness? Festivals on the Wadden Islands Lovers of music, art and dance festivals have plenty to choose from in the Netherlands. Especially in summer there are dozens of events being held every weekend. The Wadden Islands also have a number of yearly festivals that are very popular. Please visit the various websites to find out how to get your tickets this winter, as some of them sell out pretty quickly. OEROL FESTIVAL – TERSCHELLING Every year the Oerol Festival is held on Terschelling. In the local dialect, Oerol means ‘everywhere’, and it comes from an old Terschelling tradition. Long ago, when spring came around and the livestock could graze out on the meadows beyond the villages again, the animals were ‘oerol’. Today this happy occasion can be experienced for ten days during the multifaceted Oerol Festival. WWW.OEROL.NL
MADNES FESTIVAL – AMELAND
Photo Tom Roelofs
The MadNes Festival is a music festival that also offers plenty of activities. From surfing to skateboarding to different workshops and more! The festival hosts many (inter)national bands and DJs. The festival was created on the beach Nes thanks to an idea of four lifeguards who were enjoying a sunset while cleaning the beach of litter one evening. WWW.MADNESFESTIVAL.NL
INTO THE GREAT WIDE OPEN – VLIELAND Since 2009 Into The Great Wide Open is organised on Vlieland every September. This unique festival on and around the campsite is a wonderful event with good music, visual arts, film, oysters, and nature in all its beauty. It’s organised by a group of people who know each other from the pop music industry and wanted to make their dream festival a reality on Vlieland. WWW.INTOTHEGREATWIDEOPEN.NL
ROCK & ROLLSTREET – TERSCHELLING The first weekend of September is when the Rock & Rollstreet Festival takes place on Terschelling. The village of Midsland serves as the beating heart for the event and has been given a ‘50s ambiance for the occasion. Rock-’n-roll music, classic cars, Solex mopeds, and ‘50s fashion dominate the island during that weekend. Many volunteers and businesses ensure that there is a lot to see and do.

JAZZ & COCKTAILS
A match made in heaven THE WORLD OF COCKTAILS HAS EVOLVED. TRENDY BARS ARE EVERYWHERE, ALL OFFERING A GREAT TIME AND GREAT DRINKS. ROOFTOP BARS, SECRET ENTRANCES, ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES, AND RARE INGREDIENTS – THERE ARE MORE POSSIBILITIES TODAY THAN EVER, AND THE COCKTAIL SCENE IS ALSO MORE ACCESSIBLE. As cocktails were gaining in popularity, so was the music genre of jazz. Jazz had been around for a while, but its popularity truly soared in the ‘20s. The illicit bars, called speakeasies, played a very important role for the predominantly black jazz musicians. Because the speakeasies were illegal, the artists could get work
