EDITORIAL
THIS YEAR WE ARE GOING TO CELEBRATE! This is the tenth copy of the WestCord Lifestyle Magazine. Reason to celebrate! It has been five years since we launched the first edition. The first one is not that difficult, but how do you keep it interesting?! Well, we seem to have succeeded. We have published nine more editions and we continue to receive positive responses to the magazine.
This festive edition includes the announcement that we are changing the name of the magazine. After all, we have to keep on surprising you. From now on the WestCord Lifestyle Magazine will be called: HARRY! by WestCord. Well, we do not have to explain how we came up with this name. We always say: the name has to cover the content. This is how we always work when we have to come up with names for our hotels, bars and so much more. Over time we have come up with a great many names. So, giving the magazine the name that radiates WestCord, the name of the founder of our wonderful family business, Photo Bastiaan van Musscher
is the obvious thing to do.
We have a lot more to celebrate this year. On April 19, we finally started the construction of Hotel Jakarta on Java Island. After two years of preparation, the first pile has entered the ground. We sailed to the construction site over the IJ river on the ‘Prins van Oranje’. From the water you truly realize the fantastic location Hotel Jakarta will have in Amsterdam. On April 27, the opening of the totally renewed ‘ZeeVaert Bar & Rotisserie’ took place. The former ‘bruine café’ (traditional Dutch pub) of Hotel de Wadden on Vlieland has now turned into a cozy bar, where you can also enjoy a casual bite to eat. Hotel New York has also planned for some amazing parties. In June, at the Wilhelminapier, the newest flagship of the Holland America Line will be baptized: the ms Koningsdam. Naturally, Hotel New York, the former head office of HAL, will play an important role in this. In October, something magnificent lies in store for Hotel New York, though we are still keeping that a secret for now...
In this magazine you can enjoy great interviews, interesting reports, and beautiful stories. The report about the Friesian horse is extraordinary; the Lippizan horse of the low countries! We are particularly proud of the interview with Gordon. He has been in the business for 25 years. Gordon was present at the opening of the Fashion Hotel Amsterdam in 2009, for recordings of ‘Glitter Glamour Gordon’. Well, that certainly did not go unnoticed! We laughed a great deal together and he is really kind. We are also very proud of the interview with Pieter van den Hoogenband. What an incredible sportsman and a really sympathetic guy! He often visits the beautiful island of Vlieland. Our oldest son competed nationally in swimming during his youth, so Pieter is more or less a hero for our family.

HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT THE PLANTS IN THE GARDEN LITERALLY REMAIN WITHIN THE BORDERS? ‘Creating an indoor garden is a complex project, but maintaining it is equally difficult. Plants are natural living organisms in which insects live. You do not want those in a hotel. If we do not treat roses properly, lice will appear. That’s why we use organic pesticides that are not harmful or poisonous to humans, though at the same time are specifically harmful to such insects. And also: trees grow, but they shouldn’t grow through the roof. So, we will not be done when the hotel opens – that’s when it all starts! That is why inspections have to be done by a professional gardner. He will be able to determine if plants have to be pruned or he can determine how much water the plants need.’
AND LOGISTICALLY: HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DO THE WORK? ‘Preferably, we would like to plant everything when the building is completely finished and the indoor climate is good and completely tested. But as a few really big specimens will be planted in the garden, a few of the trees will have to be planted before the facade of the building is finalized. That is a quite significant challenge, which we will have to coordinate well with the builders of the hotel.’
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PROJECT? ‘I think it is special that a hotel chain has chosen to distinguish itself through sustainability and being green. And their vision of sustainability connects with ours. This way plants grow towards the light and as we want the plants to grow upwards, lamps need to be placed in the ceiling. Therefore, we are taking an energy policy measure. We had never thought that we would use our knowledge in this area and it seems that we possess knowledge which we can actually use outside of our own gardens!’

Ameland Horse rescue boat It really is an experience to see a rescue boat being towed ashore by robust horses, straight through the surf. And this tradition also shows that rescuing people from drowning, and helping boats in distress, goes back a long way. Because throughout the years a lot of boats have sunken or have gotten into trouble right off the coast of Ameland. To save the people from drowning, islanders went out to sea, putting their lives at risk, and this is how on February 6, 1825, the first successful rescue took place. In order to transport the heavy rescue boats to the beach, the horse rescue boat was established. Ten horses pulled the rescue boat from Hollum to the beach. Then they went through the surf in a trot, in order to launch the rescue boat. But in August 1979 something went terribly wrong. Due to a combination of circumstances, the horses couldn’t be disconnected from the boat during the launch and they were dragged out to sea and drowned. After this, new horses were trained to do the job and ultimately the horse rescue boat was active until 1988. Today, approximately twelve times a year a demonstration of the horse rescue boat is given. The launches take place at the beach, south west of Hollum, at the end of the Tjettepad. VVVAMELAND.NL

When the asparagus have come to a boil, turn the heat off and let the asparagus stand in the hot liquid. Boil the eggs, peel them and slice in half. Cook the cleaned baby potatoes in their skin in salted water and a bay leaf, remove them from the water and add some melted butter and chopped parsley. Heat the ham briefly in a little bouillon.
