Welcome to Squires Gate A warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Squires Gate to Brookburn Road for tonight’s game.

A review of the last weeks matches The games are coming thick and fast at the moment. Last Tuesday night we enjoyed our first visit to Radcliffe Borough of the Evo-Stik League where we recorded an impressive 2-1 victory. We then entertained Barnoldswick Town in the Macron Cup here on Saturday, where we didn’t impose ourselves in the way we have many times this season going down to a 3-1 defeat. Our cause wasn’t helped by gifting Barlick two goals and not making the most of our chances particularly in the second half which we largely controlled, although it’s fair to say Barlick edged the first.

Welcome to Squires Gate It is with pleasure that we welcome Squires Gate back this time in the League for what will be a tough encounter at Brookburn Road. Their first visit in August saw them inflict a 3-2 defeat on us to proceed to next round of the Emirates FA Cup. This game gives us the chance to put that disappointment behind as we look to maintain our good league form in the league. Squires Gate’s current form has dipped following their great start to the season, they currently sit 14th in the league with four wins, one draw and five defeats from their first ten games. Scoring 24 goals and conceding 28 goals and have 13 points on the board. We hope all their fans enjoy the match and wish them a safe journey back after the game.

Youth team call up’s Three of our new members of the Youth team have been called up to the Manchester County FA Under 18’s representative squad for their forthcoming matches in the FA Youth League competition. The three players selected are Martin McDermott, Tim Hanbury and Emmanuel Olaluy and everyone at the club wishes them well in the matches which will be held over the next couple of months.

Dates for your diary One of the key aims of the Clubs Committee this year is to ensure that we enhance the use of the pitches and clubhouse on match day. By doing so, we hope to both increase our presence in the Community and raise additional revenue. As such, the Youth Section of the club are organising a Quiz Night in October, details of which are in this programme and advertised in the club house, we hope you will be able to support these events. We would also like to give advance notice that our annual Bonfire party will actually fall on November 5th this year after our planned home game against Winsford.

Volunteering with the club As we continue to compete at the top end of the NWCFL, at the same time as offering football opportunities from Under 6’s to Adults the pressure on our volunteers continues to grow. As such, if you are regular at the Matches or live locally and have a couple of hours to spare to help the club to continue to progress, please have a word with anyone behind the bar.

Who’s up next? Friday 7th October – Irlam FC (h) 7.45pm ko Tuesday 11th October – Ashton Athletic (a) 7.45pm ko Saturday 15th October – 1874 Northwich (h) 3.00pm ko

Enjoy the game, and a safe journey home to all after the game. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Steve Settle’s Notes Hello and welcome to tonight’s Premier Division game against Squires Gate. This is their second visit to Brookburn Road this season and we are hoping for a better result than when we played each other in the Emirates FA Cup in August. A game we dominated only to be thwarted by some excellent goalkeeping on the day from their No.1. In fact we haven’t performed well in Cup competitions this season. We were equally disappointed to lose in the Buildbase FA Vase a week last Saturday at Penistone Church after extra time. We hadn’t got going when we fell behind just after the hour mark but we managed to turn it round thanks to goals from Matty Kay and a superb Rob Black strike. However we couldn’t hold on and conceded with a sucker punch of a goal in stoppage time. In extra time we were all but forced into playing with 10 as Matty did his best to play on despite a back injury and looked the more likely as the home side resorted to using the wind to kick it into touch for goal kicks. However we failed to take our chances and were punished for a defensive mistake at the death. We’re obviously gutted about the result as we felt we could make significant progress in the competition but we cannot dwell and let it distract us from our overall ambitions as a club. Luckily in this league an opportunity to prove yourself is never too far away and we certainly proved that at Radcliffe Borough in the Manchester Premier Cup last Tuesday night. It was a good chance to test some of the players on the fringes and give them their chance to push their claim for a spot in the starting line-up. Rick Ainsclough and Mo Noor made their first starts since joining the club, Rick is a recent addition having returned from Canada where he was playing for the Oakville Blue Devils, and they both impressed in the midfield. Dan Clarke did well stepping up from the reserves whilst Georgi Whyment did well off the bench to score his first senior goal. It was a good chance for us to blood some youngsters and I was delighted to hand Carlos Mendes Gomes from the youth team his senior debut and he made an instant impact having a hand in both goals.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

Carlos was a hero for the youth two weeks ago helping the under 18s to their first ever FA Youth Cup win against Nantwich Town. Here’s hoping he’s the first of many from Nik Storey’s squad who will make the step up. We can enjoy the Manchester Premier Cup draw now and hope we can draw one of the big guns such as FC United, Salford City or Curzon Ashton to give the club another night to remember. Last Saturday, was another game two bad defensive mistakes cost us two goals in the Macron Cup match against Barnoldswick Town. The game failed to ignite for long periods, particularly in the first half for us. However our second half performance had more about it and just after we hit the bar which could have made it 2-2, we fell to another sucker punch to lose 3-1. We wish Barlick the best of luck in the next round. I’d like to finish off today with a massive thank you to both our supporters and our volunteers. Both our committee and our volunteer base work tirelessly to ensure that our football club runs as smoothly as possible and without them we’d be nowhere. Likewise our supporters who’ve stepped in to help out as well helping out behind the bar, with social media and even helping out on the gate. It’s great to see so many people down on match days and it gives everyone a real boost.

Enjoy the game, Setts

History of Squires Gate Blackpool & District Amateur League: 1958 to 1961 Squires Gate were formed in 1948 as Squires Gate British Legion FC and competed in the Blackpool & District Amateur League. They won the leagues Rawling Shield in their first season. The name of the club was changed to Squires Gate FC in 1953. They won the leagues First Division in 1955–56 and 1956–57; also the Blackwell Cup in 1958–59 and 1959–60. They spent the 1960–61 in the Fylde District League, winning the Fylde Cup and losing finalists in the Bannister Cup. West Lancashire League: 1961 to 1991 The following season they moved up to the West Lancashire League where they spent the next thirty years. From 1961 until 1980 they were in Division Two and were promoted in 1981 as champions. In the 1986–87 season they won the Richardson Cup. North West Counties League: 1991 onward They were elected into the North West Counties Football League for the 1991–92 season, joining Division Two for the 1991–92 season. Squires Gate won the leagues Fair Play Award for the 1993–94 season and were losing finalists in the 1997–98 Division Two Trophy. They won the 2001–02 season Division Two Trophy and then the following season they missed the runner-up spot on goal difference but were still promoted to Division One following the demise of Stand Athletic who had originally been promoted as Division Two champions. They reached their highest league placing in the 2005–06 season also reaching the quarter finals of the FA Vase then last season, under the Management of Andy Clarkson, Gate improved still further on their

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

best ever placing, finishing sixth in what is now the Premier Division. On 10 March 2007 Squires Gate played a home match against FC United of Manchester at Curzon Ashton F.C.s ground. The club had approached Blackpool F.C. about playing the game at Bloomfield Road but the ground was not available. And so they played the match in Ashton-under-Lyne, as it was felt that FCUM fans were more likely to attend with the match being staged in the Greater Manchester area. A crowd of 1,650 saw Squires Gate lose 0-1 and Squires Gate earned about £7,000. To cap a very impressive 2007-08 season, Squires Gate were delighted that no less than nine of their members were honoured with long service awards: Albert Hamer, George Diggle, Roy Westhead, Brian Hugill and Brian Addison all collected Football Association Order of Merit mementos for 50 years service; and Steve Bellamy, Mick Farrer, John Maguire and Tony Hornby received 30 years awards from the Lancashire FA. All these stalwarts are still active in the service of their Club. Groundsman Brian Addison was judged the best at our level in the Northern Region, and a magnificent third nationally at the FA Groundsman of the Year presentations in London last September, and his pitch is clear evidence of his commitment. As Chairman Stuart Hopwood said, " We believe in a sure and steady programme of improvement of our facilities, and we now feel that with an award winning pitch, dressing rooms which are amongst the best in the League, and a pleasant, air-conditioned Clubhouse, we have a lot to be proud of, and the future looks good for Squires Gate FC. Dave McCann was appointed manager towards the end of the 2012/13 season and has endured premier survival since taking charge. He is assisted by Richard Thomas. Season 20014/15 was the most successful in the NWCFL finishing in 6th place with a record number of points.

Radcliffe Borough 1 West 2 match report…Tuesday 27 Sept. West registered their first ever win in the Frank Hannah Manchester Premier Cup with a 2-1 win away to Evo-Stik League side Radcliffe Borough. Following their weekend FA Vase exit at the weekend manager Steve Settle made seven changes to the starting line-up handing full debuts to Rick Ainsclough and Mohammed Noor whilst there were starts for Paul Socha, Jonny Poizer, Rob Black, Dan Clarke with teenager Georgi Whyment restored to the bench. Last week’s FA Youth Cup hero Carlos Mendes Gomes was promoted to the bench for the first time. The game started at a high tempo that refused to relent throughout out the entire game and it was West who created the game’s first chance on four minutes when Jordan Poole chested down a cleared West corner and volleying just over from 20 yards out. Two minutes later a superbly weighted through ball from Rob Black released Noor one-on-one but the Radcliffe goalkeeper Johnson was quick off his line to smother the danger. Radcliffe’s first chance came on 8 minutes as Nalatche Lassana latched onto a superb cross field pass racing to the by-line and pulling his cross back to Yousef Yousef but the Radcliffe striker fired just over. The home side had the early impetus but West hit them on the break on 16 minutes as Jonny Poizer latched onto a cleared ball by the West defence but fired into the side netting at the near post. Dean Williams in the West goal was called into action for the first time on 32 minutes as he was forced to save a hard deflected effort from Abou Sanogo at the edge of the West penalty area. A minute later West almost led as superb cross from Ben Woods found Poizer unmarked in the middle but the West striker dragged his shot wide of the post with the keeper beaten. Radcliffe responded with a miss of their own as McCabe’s low cross from

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

the left hand side found Sanogo but the French striker put it past the post. 45 minutes of hard work was undone in first half stoppage time when Sanogo went over in the penalty appearing to catch Martyn Andrews in trying to reach the ball and the referee pointed to the spot. Sanogo duly dispatched the penalty dinking it into the bottom right hand corner giving Williams no chance and the home side a half time lead. West came out determined to get themselves back in the game as on 50 minutes Jordan Poole forced Johnson into a save from a free kick after Noor was tripped at the edge of the area. Two minutes later Radcliffe almost made it 2-0 as following a switch in play as a shot went across goal and McDonald turned it over from close range with the goal at his mercy. West levelled on the hour mark when a cross field pass from inside West’s half released Poizer who played in sub Mendes Gomes on the left who beat his man, raced into the box and cut his pass inside to fellow substitute Georgi Whyment who coolly fired past Johnson for his first goal of the season. Radcliffe were far from dissuaded as they rattled the crossbar immediately following the restart. The final 20 minutes produced few clear cut chances as West were forced to play the last 10 with virtually 10 players after Noor was forced to play on with cramp with West having made all three substitutions. As the game looked to be heading to a penalty shoot- out Ben Woods burst down the left, played in Mendes Gomes who for a second time drove into the box, played it to Ben Steer who drilled it into the bottom right hand corner to hand West a memorable first night in the Manchester Premier Cup.

West 1 Barnoldswick Town 3 match report‌Saturday 1 October West crashed out of their second cup competition in the space of eight days with defeat at home to Barnoldswick Town in the 1st round of the Macron Cup. With a place in the round of 32 at stake and a potential final at Fleetwood Town up for grabs manager Steve Settle made three changes from Tuesday's mid-week win at Radcliffe Borough as he recalled Richmond Botchey, Joe Shaw and Ash Woods to the starting eleven. The game failed to ignite early on as both sides were cagey in the opening and it was the visitors who made the early inroads with Mark Threlfall and Harry Thompson both going close in the opening quarter of an hour. Such was the slow start from the home side West's first chance resulted in the goal as Ben Woods raced onto a through ball, beat the keeper to it, coolly rounded him and slotted home for his 5th goal of the season on 27 minutes. West almost doubled their lead on 36 minutes as a through ball by Shaw was deflected into the path of Ash Woods but the West striker dragged his shot wide. Moments later Barnoldswick Town were level as Zack Dale robbed Mohammed Noor of possession at the edge of the area and slotted it into the bottom right hand corner beyond the helpless Dean Williams. That setback sparked West into life and they finished the half strongly as Ben Woods skipped past two Barnoldswick defenders and forced goalkeeper Cross into a strong save at his near post to keep the scores level at half time.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

Whatever Settle said to the players at half time had the galvanising effect it was intended as West created another chance immediately after half time when Ben Woods hard struck goalbound effort was brilliantly deflected wide. On 55 minutes Rob Black released substitute Ben Steer down the right and his early cross found Ash Woods whose shot was just round the post. Two minutes later the same move found Black this time on the right hand side but his low cross was superbly cleared at the near post with Ash Woods again waiting to capitalise. The same move almost opened up Barnoldswick again on 64 minutes as again the Barlick defence was called into action by Ben Steer after a superb cross field pass from Shaw. Barnoldswick Town responded themselves and on 76 minutes Williams was called into action to make a superb block at his near post after a shot on the turn. From the resulting corner the visitors took the lead as the corner was flicked on to the far post and turned home by Mark Threlfall. West responded by throwing players forward and almost levelled in stoppage time when Martyn Andrews clipped the underside of the crossbar with a header from a corner and despite a huge shout for handball on the line Barlick survived. From the clearance they made the game safe as John Beckwith capitalised on a Williams error allowing himself to roll the ball into an empty net.
