Welcome to BARNTON A warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Barnton to Brookburn Road for today’s game.
A review of the last weeks matches Since our last home game which resulted in an exciting 4-1 win on a barmy Tuesday night against Runcorn Town, we suffered another defeat away to 1874 Northwich. Steve was forced into four changes from the team against Runcorn Town, which wasn’t the best news to try to reverse a string of defeats we have had against Northwich, they really are our bogy team! This match perfectly summed up the challenge of the NWCFL Premier Division where it looked like we were slightly off the pace but still in the game at 1-1 on 80 minutes, unfortunately a strong final 10 minutes saw Northwich score three goals to run out worthy winners. However, the disappointment of that was quickly forgotten with another goal fest on Tuesday night with a 7-2 away victory against Cammell Laird 1907, making us the Divisions top scorers! (due to print deadlines) details of this match will be in our next programme, the highlight of the evening was one of our young players Ben Webb score his first hat-trick for the club. West fans, are certainly enjoy the sight of goals rippling the net so far this season, and long may it continue!.
Welcome to Barnton It is with pleasure that we welcome Barnton, for what is their first visit to Brookburn Road. At the time of print they currently sit 18th in the league with two wins, a draw and six losses from their first nine games. Scoring goals has been a problem for them this year. We hope all their fans enjoy the match and wish them a safe journey back after the game.
Youth team call up’s Three of our new members of the Youth team have been called up to the Manchester County FA Under 18’s representative squad for their forthcoming matches in the FA Youth League competition. The three players selected are Martin McDermott, Tim Hanbury and Emmanuel Olaluy and everyone at the club wishes them well in the matches which will be held over the next couple of months.
Dates for your diary One of the key aims of the Clubs Committee this year is to ensure that we enhance the use of the pitches and clubhouse on match day. By doing so, we hope to both increase our presence in the Community and raise additional revenue. As such, the Youth Section of the club are organising an event in October, details of which will be in the next home games programme and advertised in the club house, we hope you will be able to support these events. We would also like to give advance notice that our annual Bonfire party will actually fall on November 5th this year after our planned home game against Winsford.
Volunteering with the club As we continue to compete at the top end of the NWCFL, at the same time as offering football opportunities from Under 6’s to Adults the pressure on our volunteers continues to grow. As such, if you are regular at the Matches or live locally and have a couple of hours to spare to help the club to continue to progress, please have a word with anyone behind the bar.

Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for this afternoons NWCFL Premier Division fixture against last year’s Division One playoff winners Barnton. We hope that their officials, players and fans enjoy the afternoon and we wish them a successful season after today! Barnton have had a mixed start to the season with heavy defeats against New Mills, Nelson and Runcorn Linnets mixed in with wins against Ashton Athletic and Cammell Lairds. Last week they enjoyed a good win in the Vase and I’m sure Steve will have his players up for today’s game ensuring that we will have to be at our best to get 3 points. The lads come in to the game in 3rd place in the league as we continue our good start to the campaign. Last Saturday we turned up at Northwich missing Pottsy and Botchey, add to that the fact that Mark Rogers was playing 50% fit with his Achilles injury and Scott Mason arriving at the ground at 2.54pm it didn’t make for brilliant preparation! That being said we are developing a culture where we don’t look for excuses and I was still confident that we had more than enough to cause them problems. Northwich have a big budget and Ian Street has signed some good players and in the end their pressure told in the second half. With 10 minutes to go with the score 1-1 we were still looking to make attacking substitutions with the aim of winning the game but fatigue set in and we conceded 3 late goals to flatter them. Whilst it’s obviously disappointing we didn’t want the lads to dwell on the result as we had the opportunity to put things right on Tuesday away at Cammell Lairds. On Tuesday we brought Jordan Poole into the team to play at centre half and welcomed Socha and Botchey back at fullbacks. I’ve been stressing to the lads that this season will require a squad if we are to achieve our goals
and on Tuesday we needed to show that we have the strength in depth to be able to cope with the demands of the league. In the end we won 7-2 in what was a clinical display of attacking football. At half-time we were 3-0 to the good without really getting out of 2nd gear! I was delighted for Ben Woods to get his first hat-trick for the club. Ben has filled in for us at left-back during his relatively short time with us which shows his versatility as a player but there is no doubt that his quality going forward is something we will look to this year as he is able to contribute with goals and assists! Today’s game is particularly important as we don’t play again in the league until October. By taking 22 points from 10 games we would be well set to progress in the Vase, League Cup and County Cup in the coming weeks! I’d also like to say a big thanks tour ever growing supporters, the lads really appreciate your encouragement in the games and we are looking forward to giving you lots to cheer about this season!! History of BARNTON Barnton AFC was founded in 1946 and in 1948 became a founder member of the MidCheshire League. They played in that league (renamed the Cheshire Association Football League in 2007) until 2014, and at that time were one of only two clubs to have been in the league throughout its 66-year history, the other being Knutsford. Barnton won the league on eleven occasions, including seven consecutive league titles between 1996–97 and 2002–03. The pinnacle of the club's success came with winning the National League Systems Cup while representing the Mid-Cheshire League in the inaugural competition of 2003–04. They beat West Cheshire, Liverpool Combination and South Western League opposition along the way before defeating the Cambridgeshire County League 2–0 on their home soil in the final. As a result of this they went on to represent England in the UEFA Regions Cup in Slovenia and Bosnia where they won four, drew one and lost one of their games, narrowly failing to reach the final stages of the competition. The club also participated in the FA Cup on two occasions (1948–49 and 1949–50) and the FA Vase in 1985–86, although they failed to progress further than the extra preliminary round on each occasion. The club submitted an application to join the North West Counties Football League for the
start of the 2014–15 season. They were successful in their application and their place in the newly formed Division One was confirmed on 29 May. A few days later, Andy Burgess was appointed as the club's new manager, with Ian Ross stepping down to concentrate on his role as chairman. However, Burgess left the club by mutual consent in November and forward Colin Quirk was placed in temporary charge. Within a week Allan Glover was appointed as the new manager, but he was succeeded by Leon Knight in March 2015. The club finished seventh in their inaugural season in the North West Counties Football League, just outside the Division One Play-Off places. During Barnton’s second season in the First Division, the club accepted Leon Knight’s resignation as manager in early March, and appointed Danny Meadowcroft as interim manager until the end of the season. The team then went on to lift the Reusch First Division Cup and also gained promotion to the North West Counties League Premier Division by beating Bacup Borough in the Division One Play-Off Final. The club then said goodbye to Ian Ross who stepped down as Barnton chairman after four years, and the management team also moved on to pastures new. In May 2016, Steve Lloyd and Mike Alcock took over as the new management team of Barnton FC, and Tim Burton took over as the new chairman. Record Attendance: 554 vs Bacup Borough 14th May 2016

Glasses, bottles, gas canisters, knives, darts, tools, flag poles or any other articles likely to cause injury are not permitted into the ground. Alcohol may be purchased and consumed in the bar area only. Children are not allowed in the Club House unless accompanied by an adult. Encroachment onto the playing area is forbidden at all times. Standing is not allowed in front of the seated areas. All forms of transport on the clubs car park is at the owners’ risk.

West 4 Runcorn Town 1 match report‌ Tuesday 6th September West moved into second place in the table with an impressive 4-1 win at home to high flying Runcorn Town.

West manager Steve Settle was able to name an unchanged side to the one that had won 6-0 at league leaders Irlam on Friday night but was boosted by the returns of Mark Rogers and Ben Steer to the bench. Runcorn Town were entering the game on the back of a 1-0 win away to New Mills at the weekend which had lifted them above West in the table.
West didn't ease off and the half came to a close after some terrific West passing saw Gleave lay off a pass inside to Scott Mason but he could only hit the side netting as he drove into the box.
West started brightly and after just three minutes were almost ahead when Lee Gavin won the ball in midfield, his through pass playing in Woods on the left and his low cross was almost turned in by Rick Gleave only to be denied by a superb block from the Runcorn Town centre back. Five minutes later Gavin was involved in the action again as he collected the ball at the edge of the penalty area but despite being taken down from behind was still able to force the Runcorn goalkeeper Ciaran D'Loughlin into a smart save low to his left. West continued to press as Richmond Botchey found Matty Kay at the edge of the area after a run through the middle, Kay almost played in Shaw with his first time pass but Kay recovered to force a strong save from D'Loughlin from the edge of the area. West continued to press as Jonny Poizer forced a great save from D'Loughlin low down to his right from a driven free kick from 30 yards out after 23 minutes. A minute later Runcorn demonstrated their attacking capabilities as they broke down the right, the ball was cut inside to Craig Cairns whose layoff found Thelwell but the Town forward shot over first time. The deadlock was broken on 31 minutes after a fine passing move ended with Botchey back heeling inside the Runcorn penalty area to release Matty Kay whose first time cross found Rick Gleave at the far post to fire home for his third goal of the season. Two minutes later it was 2-0 as Ash Woods drilled a long range

After a furious paced first half, the second saw both teams take a little time to find their rhythm but it didn't prevent West from creating early chances as Kay headed a difficult chance wide from a Woods shot turned cross on 48minutes before Kay forced D'Loughlin into a strong parry two minutes later. The third arrived on the hour mark as Matty Kay found himself on the receiving end of a brash challenge at the edge of the area, the West forward kept his composure to stay on his feet but his low rolling effort deceived the goalkeeper allowing it to roll into the bottom left hand corner. Three minutes later it was 4-0 as Woods was brought down thanks to a late challenge by Joseph Holt on Ash Woods on the right hand side. Mason whipped in a perfect cross and it was met with a thunderous header from Joe Shaw that the keeper couldn't prevent from crossing the line. On 72 minutes Runcorn Town pulled a goal back after a long clearance down the middle, the ball evaded Andrews, not helped by a nudge in the back, allowing Cairns to volley home from 20 yards out with Dean Williams in the West goal given no chance. Looking for a way back into the game Runcorn Town went route one with their best chance coming eight minutes from time when they headed wide unmarked from a corner. To their credit the visitors pushed West until the full time whistle however West weren't to be denied and were deservedly clapped off by the West support at the full time whistle.

1874 Northwich 4 West 1 match report‌ Saturday 10th September West slumped to their first away defeat of the season as they were soundly beaten 4-1 by 1874 Northwich. West Manager's pre-match plans were thrown into disarray with the late withdrawal of Richmond Botchey adding to the absence of Anthony Potts and Rick Gleave. Worse still was the traffic meaning that full back Scott Mason only arrived as the team's were heading out. However West were able to welcome the return of Mark Rogers following an Achilles injury as Ben Woods made his first start for West and Ben Steer returned to the starting line-up. West almost fell behind after 60 seconds when a move down the right freed Tom Bailey at the edge of the area but he struck the inside of the post with his first time effort. West started slowly but had a great chance to take the lead on 11 minutes when Ash Woods headed on a Ben Woods cross, reaching his own header but volleyed over from 10 yards out. Two minutes later Lee Gavin found Jonny Poizer with a superb through ball but the West forward could only fire wide at the near post. 1874 took the lead on 29 minutes when Dean Williams kick was sliced to a Northwich player who quickly played in Scott McGowan in arches of space; the forward rounded Williams and slotted home to give the home side the lead. The lead last three minutes as a long ball from Ben Woods found Poizer's head whose flick on was played into the path of Ash Woods; his first touch took the ball past his marker with the West forward quickly turning before firing an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net from the edge of the penalty area. The goal lifted West who had created long range efforts from Gavin and Poizer but

couldn't force 1874 goalkeeper Greg Hall into a save. Five minutes before half time Williams was called into make a great save low to his left, reaching behind him to prevent the ball crossing the line. However the West goalkeeper suffered a shoulder injury and was replaced by Hayden Buckley-Smith as the two sides went into the break level. The second half began as uneventful as the first had been eventful and it took until 70 minutes before either side had a significant effort on goal with Neil Chappell firing just wide from 30 yards for the home side. The injury front would get worse for West as Matty Kay was forced out of the game due to a knee injury; and replaced with Paul Socha. The deadlock was broken on 79 minutes when West conceded possession and a quick interchange of passing released Sam Hind down the left who lifted his shot over BuckleySmith to give the home side the lead. Four minutes later Ben Woods responded and almost levelled as his shot clipped the top of the crossbar from the edge of the area. On 84 minutes Ben Woods was involved again as he played in Steer but the pass was under hit allowing Hall to save at his near post. The points were made safe four minutes from time when Buckley-Smith made a great save from close range but McGowan was on hand to fire home the loose ball on the line. To add insult to injury 1874 made it 4-1 in stoppage time as Bailey stabbed home from close range after a low deflected cross from the right hand side. The result left West 3rd in the table, three points behind leaders Atherton Collieries, having been overtaken by 1874 as a result of the loss.
