Welcome to Atherton Collieries A warm welcome to Brookburn Road for today’s Hallmark Security Premier Division game against our good friends from Atherton Collieries, we welcome their officials, players and supporters and hope you enjoy our hospitality tonight. Once again Colls are having an excellent season under Michael Clegg and currently sit in 3rd place, 2 points behind 1874 Northwich and Runcorn Town, so once again we are under no illusions as to the task we face this evening. They are the league’s leading scorers and have a potent strike force who will need to be watched carefully tonight. On Friday night Rob McKay and Paul Settle witnessed their last game against Irlam and they faced the same feisty performance from their visitors that we encountered the previous week. Unlike us they didn’t concede an injury time winner and drew 1-1. On Saturday we faced league leaders 1874 Northwich and unbelievably once again conceded an injury time goal to hand our opponents the 3 points. We started the game really well and created 4 or 5 good scoring opportunities which we failed to take. The main talking point of the 1st half was the sending off of Joe Shaw and 1874’s Sam Hare for squaring up to each other after a foul. Possibly yellow cards and a warning could have sufficed however the official saw it differently and brandished red cards. The sending off impacted the course of the game in the 2nd half as we were forced onto the back foot for periods however we defended manfully and looked to have won a hard earned point until the fateful injury time which has cost us so dear already this season. On this occasion a free kick was played into the box from the right and ended up in the net without a touch from anyone. A cruel end to what was a gutsy performance against a team that will be challenging for honours come April.

Other news Our Secretary Rob McKay, attended a ‘Grow your Club’ meeting at County FA headquarters where clubs exchanged ideas about fan engagement, something we are keen to promote at this club. On Friday the draw for the next round of the Manchester Premier Cup was made and we are away to Glossop North End on a date to be arranged.

League Correspondence As we stated in our last programme we have had correspondence from the league committee who have raised a couple of points following a recent visit. Firstly, at one point they noticed a dog inside the perimeter fence. Secondly they were concerned that young children were going on to the pitch at halftime and playing in the goalmouths. We must therefore ask for your help in both of these matters.

Who’s up next? We have no game on Saturday 22nd then travel to joint leaders Runcorn Town on Wednesday 26th before hosting AFC Darwen here on Saturday 29th. Wednesday 26th October – Runcorn Town (a) 7.45pm ko Saturday 29th October – AFC Darwen (h) 3.00pm ko Tuesday 1st November – Nelson (a) 7.45pm ko Our home game on 5th November will now be against Ashton Athletic and not Winsford. Looking forward our Boxing Day derby against Maine Road is expected to be moved back 24 hours to December 27th and our visit to AFC Liverpool on New Years Eve will now kick off at 1pm at their request as the ‘other’ Liverpool kick off at 3pm at Anfield.

Enjoy the game, and a safe journey home to all after the game. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Steve Settle’s Notes Good evening everyone and welcome to Brookburn Road for tonight’s Hallmark Security North West Counties Premier Division match against our friends from Atherton Colls. We hope that Cleggy, his team, the committee and their fans have an enjoyable evening and a safe journey home. Colls are probably the team I have seen most in our league, other than us of course, and I rate them as one of the best teams. On the opening day of last season I predicted that they would be ‘there or there abouts’ at the end of the season (they were!!) and I think this year will be no different. Cleggy has done an excellent job there winning Division 1 before mounting a title challenge last year. This year they come into the game in 2nd place and the boys will have no ambiguity with regards to how tough tonight will be! We knew that this week would be massive in the context of our season. Playing the teams occupying the top 3 positions would be a true barometer of our progress over the past 12 months. Truth be told we have been a little disappointed of late at the circumstances of our defeats.

back post. For me the goal was totally preventable as we had not 1 but 2 opportunities in the lead up to clear our lines. It’s obviously disappointing that we have stumbled of late. I feel we have enough quality in our squad to beat anyone on our day but it seems that the consistency we have been striving for is still eluding us. Tonight’s game represents a tougher prospect, in my opinion, than Saturday. Colls have pace in abundance going forward and we will need to ensure we defend solidly to get anything out of the game. That being said we will look to ask questions of them when we have the ball and if we can find that quality in front of goal then we will be tough to beat too! All things weighed up I am excited about the game tonight, it gives us yet another opportunity to show what we can do and the lads will relish it.

We have struggled for consistency and we have gifted the opposition some terrible goals. Saturday’s game against 1874 Northwich is a case in point. Despite struggling with injuries we got a team on the pitch that should have been capable of getting a result. First half I thought we were very good. We looked to play football on the front foot and created 4 really good opportunities only to find their keeper in inspired form.

On the injury front there is no progress with Rogers, Gavin, Simmo, Lilley or Matty Kay. I am however hopeful that Mason will be back in the next couple of weeks as we look to get a run together before Christmas.

The farcical sending off just before half time completely changed the game and we were weakened significantly more than they were. We changed the shape to play on the counter attack and still had one or 2 opportunities to grab a winner only to concede a 94th minute goal with a floated cross that drifted in at the

As always, enjoy the game!

On a final note it has been amazing to see so many fans down at the last few games, your support is very much appreciated as we look to build and grow our little club!

NWCFL Premier Division – Results (after 15 October)

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

History of Atherton Collieries Atherton Collieries Football Club was established in 1916 by miners from the six pits which were then operative within the old urban district of Atherton. The football club became the latest part of an ever growing sports group that was organised by the Atherton Collieries Joint Association. Between 1919 and 1965 the club were winners of the Bolton Combination League ten times. Collieries established a noted reputation in Lancashire and by 1964-65 had won the Lancashire Junior Shield six times, a record which is still unsurpassed. They joined the North West Counties League as founder members in 1982, winning the third division in 1986-87. Steady progress off the pitch, with floodlights being erected in 1994, was matched by progress on the pitch as Colls final league position improved season on season. This culminated in promotion to the first division after finishing the 1995-96 season as runners-up to Vauxhall GM. Colls suffered mixed fortunes during their tenure in the NWCFL Premier Division. Their best season came in 2006-07 when they finished in seventh place under Phil Brown. This remains the highest position the club have ever finished in the English Pyramid. During 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons Anthony Pilkington made 35 appearances for the club scoring 19 goals. Three of these goals came in the away match at FC United

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

which Collieries infamously won 3-0. This caught the attention of many local clubs and it was Stockport County who secured his services. The striker has since played for Huddersfield Town, Norwich City and the Republic of Ireland. The club were relegated from the Premier Division at the end of the 2008/09 campaign and Steve Pilling was appointed manager in August 2009. In 2010/11 the club won their first NWCFL silverware for decades when AFC Liverpool were beaten 3-2 (aet) in the First Division Trophy Final at Valley Road, Flixton. Season 2011/12 saw the club finish fourth in the First Division but another trophy was added to the honours board. The Bolton Hospital Cup was won for the first time in 25 years with a penalty shootout triumph over Eagley. The Reebok final had ended 2-2 with Gary Burnett scoring both Collieries goals as he put in a man of the match performance. Seasons 2012/13 and 2013/14 saw the team lead the NWCFL First Division in the early stages but fall away towards the end. Steve Pilling was a committed servant to the club and in his five seasons at the club the team finished in 6th, 5th, 4th, 4th and 5th position respectively. Michael Clegg took over the managerial reins at the commencement of the 2014/15 campaign. He had previously enjoyed stints at near neighbours Pennington and Atherton LR. With the help of strong backroom support and local players he stated that he wanted to gain promotion with a side that would consist of Atherton based players.

Atherton Collieries History continued… An opening day win at Cammell Laird, who went on to finish runners up, set high standards for the rest of the campaign. What followed was to be the club’s best season in their history. Promotion back to the NWCFL Premier Division was clinched with a memorable 3-0 victory at Atherton LR on Easter Monday. Five matches after this, Collieries travelled to Cheadle Town for a midweek match knowing that a win would see them mathematically win the league. The score was 1-1 going into the final few minutes when Luke Gibson scored to send a large away following into raptures. In the national cup competitions, Collieries were drawn against Evo-Stik Division One North side Radcliffe Borough for the second consecutive season. The sides drew 2-2 at Stainton Park to set up a replay at Alder House, which Collieries lost on penalties after extra time. The FA Vase saw Michael Clegg’s side comfortably beat Penistone Church 4-0, before knocking Premier Division side AFC Liverpool out of the competition with a 4-1 victory. A tough test arrived in the following round in the shape of Seaham Red Star and Colls lost 2-1. A proud moment for the club came when they reached the Lancashire Trophy SemiFinal which was staged at Leyland. Ashton Athletic, Radcliffe Borough and Ramsbottom United were all dispatched as Colls set up a tie with Clitheroe.

Despite their best efforts, Colls couldn’t overcome a strong and experienced opposition and lost 2-0. The First Division Trophy saw Collieries beat Atherton LR in the First Round with a hard fought victory in testing conditions. Barnton and Litherland REMYCA were also seen off which took Clegg’s side into the final against AFC Darwen at Bootle. The Salmoners won 3-1 to break Colls hearts. A further final followed the next week. This time it was the Men United Cup. Having beaten Cheadle Town, Ashton Athletic, Abbey Hey, Colne and Runcorn Town the Colls came up against Premier Division champions and FA Vase finalists Glossop North End. Brad Cooke and Mark Battersby were sent off in the final and Collieries ultimately lost 2-0. A congested season, which saw Collieries play 15 matches in a month, ended on a high with an emphatic 7-2 victory over Turton in the Bolton Hospital Cup Final at The Macron. Back in the Premier Division for the first time in six years, Collieries managed to finish third behind Runcorn Linnets and Colne. The League Challenge Cup was also won for the first time, convincingly beating league champions Colne in the final on an unforgettable night at Fleetwood Town's Highbury Stadium. Attendances continue to grow and the support picked up is testament to the hard work both on and off the field. Who knows what the 2016/17 campaign will have in store. .

History of West…PART 2 – THE TWENTIES Following the wartime hiatus, the club was reformed by Mr J C (Johnny) Edwards who as a youth had gained county representative honours. Unfortunately his playing career was prematurely ended through injuries received at the Battle of the Somme, but he ably took on the job of secretary to the reconstituted Christ Church club. Lack of finance was the first problem and so the members were each given subscription books and went from door to door asking their neighbours to make a donation to club funds. The large houses on the south side of Barlow Moor Road in Fielden Park were the homes of many merchants, and they, together with the local shopkeepers on Burton Road, were also canvassed for support. The end result of all this activity was that the ‘Ex-Service’ contingent raised ample funds to get the club moving again. Having got the finance the next project was to gain admission to a competitive league, and here again Johnny Edwards was the man who got things moving. He knew Clarence Halliwell, secretary of the Lancashire Amateur League at that time, as both men were neighbours on Northen Grove. He was also a close friend of Bob Blezzard, a football league referee. Advice was sought from both men and application was made to both the Lancashire Amateur League and the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League for the approaching 1920-1921 season. Although both leagues readily agreed to admit the club it was decided to join the Lancashire and Cheshire League as this involved less expense in travelling and in any event, as most players worked on Saturday morning, away fixtures in Preston, Southport and the like would have been impractical. On joining the league the committee was faced with another problem – what to call the club.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

This arose because the L & C League had a very strict rule that all member clubs must be self financing and that works or otherwise sponsored clubs would not be admitted. This meant that Christ Church A.F.C had to change its name to avoid any implication that it was other than a truly amateur club, and so the debate began as to what the new name should be. As the club was based in the area bounded by Barlow Moor Road, Palatine Road, Lapwing Lane and Burton Road, known as Albert Square, this was a strong contender for the name of the club. However there was already a lacrosse team of that name and also the Albert Bowling and Tennis club and so eventually after much debate it was agreed to name the club West Didsbury A.F.C and it was under this name that the club commenced playing in the league as competition recommenced for the 1920-1921 season.

Following election to the L & C League the club was placed in Divisions 1 and A as the competitions recommenced in the 1920-1921 season, and indeed this was to be the first of 25 consecutive seasons in the top flight lasting until 1951-52. The Twenties was also to the be most successful era in the club's early history with both teams achieving honours on a total of 14 different occasions during the ten years to 1930. The first of these went to the second team who claimed runners-up badges in Division A when they finished behind Urmston at the end of their maiden season.

From the 1920’s to 2017… The development of our Club will continue next season as we plan to run a West Women’s team.

Around the league…from last Saturday’s games… with Ian Templeman Late late show from 1874 Rick Bailey's last minute goal for 1874 Northwich at West Didsbury & Chorlton on Saturday ensured an important 1-0 win for the Greens and three points that keeps them at the top of the Premier Division table. The last gasp goal should have come as no surprise to regular followers of the Greens, as Saturday's game was the 13th time this season that they have scored in the last ten minutes of a game, and third time in the last four games. Looks like anyone deciding to leave a game early when 1874 are playing is running the risk of missing some goal action. Runcorn Town on a roll Hard on the heels of Runcorn Town at the top of the table are Runcorn Town, whose 2-0 win over Ashton Athletic on Saturday continued a good run that has produced five wins in the last six games. It's looking good at both ends of the field too, with just one goal conceded in the last four games and striker Craig Cairns hitting the back of the net seven times in the last six games, continuing the form that saw him pick up the Premier Division Player of the Month Award. Manager Chris Herbert reshaped the Town squad over the summer, and it's certainly looking like he has found the ingredients for a successful campaign. Bullets' record breaking quest dashed Stockport Town staged a remarkable comeback against Alsager Town on Saturday, coming from two goals down to win 3-2 thanks to two goals in the last three minutes at the Stockport Sports Village. As well as the lost three points, the result also dashed Alsager's hopes of breaking a club record

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

which has stood since season 2005/06 when they were in the NWCFL Division 1 (equivalent to the current Premier Division), and won promotion to the Northern Premier League. During that season they set the current unbeaten away record of 11 games, which they equalled with their victory at Cheadle Town last Wednesday evening and a victory at Stockport on Saturday would have broken the record. The result also ended a 16 game unbeaten league run - 4 from last season and 12 so far this season - stretching back to April, when they suffered back to back defeats on 16th April and 23rd April at AFC Darwen and at home to Padiham. Up to Saturday, they had won 12 and drawn 4 league games since then. City goals from all over As being a remarkable comeback, Carlisle City's 4-3 defeat of St Helens Town on Saturday after being 3-1 down continued the City trend of players getting on the scoresheet for the first time. With Daniel Greenslade and assistant manager Jonathan Allen opening their goalscoring accounts on Saturday, it now means that 16 different players have scored for City in first team games so far this season, with manager James Tose also showing the way with a couple himself. The old saying about there being "goals throughout the team" certainly seems appropriate for City so far this season. Seven up for Abbey Hey The highest scorers on Saturday were Abbey Hey, who recorded a 7-0 win over Nelson in their Premier Division encounter at Abbey Hey. It was an impressive result and all the more remarkable given that Abbey had scored just 18 goals in 14 league games up to Saturday. Now they have found their shooting boots, manager Luke Gibson will no doubt be looking for more of the same in the games ahead.

West 0 1874 Northwich 1 match report…Saturday 15 October A depleted West side registered their fourth consecutive home defeat as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against 1874 Northwich thanks to a 92nd minute winner. West’s absentee’s, already affected by the long term losses of Mark Rogers, Gary Lilley, Lee Gavin and Michael Simcock, increased as Matty Kay, Rob Black, Rick Gleave and Scott Mason were all forced to miss out. There was minor relief with the return of Joe Shaw from a hamstring injury into the West midfield. Despite the depleted line up West started brightly as a nice ball over the top just two minutes in released Jonny Poizer and the West forward forced a strong stop from 1874 goalkeeper Greg Hall with a first time effort. 1874 responded six minutes later as an effort flashed wide of the post from the edge of the penalty area. West continued to threaten and on 16 minutes Hall was called into another save at his near post, again from Poizer, after Ash and Ben Woods had done well to win back possession. A minute later Ben Woods went close with an effort of his own as he cut inside from the left and rolled a right footed effort past the post. On 21 minutes West’s best chance fell to Ash Woods as Hall was forced to push his effort away from goal as the West striker struck a hard effort across goal. On 35 minutes Poizer went close for a third time as a wonderful through pass from Shaw released him at the edge of the area and Hall was again called upon to push a stinging effort over the bar.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

The game’s turning point came five minutes before half time as 1874 Northwich were awarded a free kick in their own half which saw Shaw and 1874’s Sam Hind put their heads together. The referee opted to show both men a red card for their part in the act. Moment’s later 1874 Northwich manager was forced to watch the remainder of the game from the sideline as he was dismissed from the technical area showing his obvious displeasure to the referee’s decision. The two sides went into the break with the home side having had the better of the chances. 1874 came out for the second half the quicker of the two sides in the second half and called Hayden Buckley-Smith into his first save on 50 minutes when a free kick was fired straight into his hands. A minute later a free header at the far post again called Hayden into action as he saved again. From that point there was very little goal mouth action from either side as 1874 dominated possession without creating much in the way of chances however an effort did flash wide of the post on 79 minutes after a quick counter attack. With a minute remaining Hayden made a save with the best effort of the match, making a big block at the near post after a turn and shot from Tom Bailey. However, West were to be denied a valiant point in the second minute of stoppage time as 1874 were awarded a free kick at the edge of the area and Rick Bailey’s effort sailed over Hayden and nestled inside the far corner to hand the visitors a vital win in a game that was spoiled by the referee’s decision to issue two red cards.
