Welcome to Padiham Good evening and welcome to Brookburn Road for tonight’s Lancashire Challenge Trophy tie against Padiham. We welcome their officials’ players and supporters and hope they enjoy our hospitality this evening. Please note: If the scores are level after 90 minutes the game will go straight to a penalty shoot out. After an inconsistent start to the season Padiham have hit a rich vein of form recently and are top of the form league with 5 wins and a draw from their last 6 games, including a win over one of the title favourites in Runcorn Linnets. One of the drivers behind this upturn in form has to be the signing of experienced forward James Dean who has scored in each of the last 9 games so we will need to be on our guard tonight. Padiham are currently 7th in the league level on points with ourselves but with a game in hand. We have already met once this season here at Brookburn Road back in August in the league and we managed to gain a narrow 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Rick Gleave. Our run of inconsistent form continued on Saturday with defeat to Ashton Athletic here. At half time there was no hint of what was to come as we led comfortably 2-0 and hadn’t been put under any pressure. Even when Ashton pulled a goal back midway through the second half there didn’t appear to be any need to panic however we then missed 2 glorious chances to score a third goal and were punished heavily in the last 7 minutes when our visitors managed to score 4 goals. Community Bonfire – Thank you Thank you to all who attended our Community bonfire and fireworks display on Saturday, the response was great, and a fantastic evening was had by all. This is a valuable annual fundraiser for the club and we’d also like to thank all those who volunterred in the set up, during the night and the tidy up on Sunday. Car parking at the club We would like to apologise to supporters for the current state of the car parking here at Brookburn Road. Regulars will have noticed that we have lost a substantial amount of pitchside parking due to the renovations taking place at one of the houses adjacent to the ground. Unfortunately the contractors have also driven heavy vehicles on to the car park behind the far goal which has churned up the ground and made it virtually unusable in bad weather. The committee is working to resolve these problems with the ultimate aim being to tarmac the car parks, though this is subject to a planning application. Who’s up next? Tonight’s game is the second of another 3 home games in a week sequence as we host Padiham before welcoming AFC Liverpool next Saturday in the League. Following that we have our 3rd taste of Friday night football when we visit Abbey Hey on 18 November. Saturday 12th November – AFC Liverpool (h) 3.00pm ko Friday 18th November – Abbey Hey (a) 7.45pm ko Saturday 26th November – Runcorn Linnets (h) 7.30pm ko Our Manchester Premier Cup tie against Glossop North End at Glossop has now been arranged for Tuesday 29 November.

Enjoy the game, and a safe journey home to all after the game.

Steve Settle’s Notes Good evening everybody and welcome to Brookburn Road for tonight’s Lancashire Challenge Trophy fixture against Padiham. We hope that their officials and supporters have an enjoyable visit to Chorlton tonight and we wish them well for the rest of the season. Steve has done a good job in recent weeks turning Padiham’s fortunes around and we know from their current form that they will be a handful tonight. Our injury crisis has been well documented in previous notes when I commented on the fact that before our game at Nelson, I was naming a really strong 11 that we had unavailable through suspensions or injuries. Going into that game I was hopeful that at least one of our centre halves would have recovered enough to play. Thankfully Pottsy was just about fit enough to start in what was a very young team. It does however give our younger members of the squad an opportunity to get some valuable experience. Carlos, Georgi, Ben Woods, Rob Black, Ben Steer and Jordan Poole are all still really young and the experience they are getting this year will stand them in good stead for the future. Again we started well with a well placed Jonny Poizer header but then we switched off for 15 minutes and gifted Nelson two very preventable goals, one a penalty as the forward had his back to goal and then getting caught out from a throw in!!! We finished the half really strongly and scored two really good goals via Ash and Pottsy and I fully expected us to go on and win the game comfortably. It’s a funny old game though and again we became too open as the game went end to end. We were worried when Deano looked to have taken a nasty knock but thankfully he was ok and we showed good character to nick an equaliser in injury time.

Given the extent of our injury list and the average age of our team, I was pleased with 4 points from the 2 games. Roll the clock forward to Saturday and we welcomed back Nia to partner Pottsy again, in what promises to be a strong pairing. We were in control of the game going in at half time 2-0 up through a fine glancing header from Carlos and another good strike from Ash, whose all game was rewarded with another man of the match performance. Ashton pulled a goal back but we were quick to create other good chances which weren’t taken. As time was ticking away we saw a surrender not witnessed at Brookburn Road before as we conceded 4 goals in the final 7 minutes! Our current inconsistent form is a concern and we are doing all we can to correct this. The lads are under no illusions that tonight will be a tough game and we will have to be at our best to get anything from it! There was one highlight on Saturday, the Community Bonfire and Fireworks Display which was a great evening with 700 people at the club enjoying themselves. As always, thanks for the support and enjoy the game!

History of PADIHAM It might be hard to imagine today but in the immediate years following the establishment of Padiham Football Club in November 1878 the `Caldersiders` as they were then known were considered one of Lancashire`s soccer pioneers and one of the better Club sides in England. The Padiham Club were in at the birth of the Lancashire Football Associations Senior Cup competition in 1879, reached the third round proper of the F.A. Cup in season 1883 - 84 and beat Burnley F.C. 6-0, 7-0, 9-1 and 4-2 in their first four encounters. Gates of over 2,000 were not uncommon for the visits of teams like Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Burnley and other local rivals to Padiham F.C.`s ground which was originally situated on the banks of the River Calder at the end of Wyre Street in Padiham and initially leased from the Shuttleworth family of Gawthorpe Hall. At present the site is occupied by the Potterton Myson Limited Main Gas factory and nothing remains of the Clubs original ground which witnessed many encounters with Clubs that later achieved Football League status. In fact it was the setting up of the Football League and the ensuing loss of fixtures with the leading Clubs, as well as the legalisation of professionalism within football that ended Padiham`s initial decade of success. Being an ardent stalwart of the fight waged from Lancashire for the legalisation of professionalism in football, Padiham`s progressive outlook at the time ironically

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

helped fashion the stranglehold football finance came to have on small town Clubs, in hindsight it condemned Padiham to an ongoing fight for survival. Unable to secure the services of players able to compete with the bigger surrounding towns and cities, gates dropped and as a result reduced income meant Padiham had to restrict its activities to playing in the Lancashire Combination Football League and at times the local minor leagues. The outbreak of World War One curtailed Padiham Football Club`s involvement in active football altogether at the end of the 1915 1916 season, and the loss of their ground during the War meant that Padiham Football Club lay dormant until after the end of World War Two when they were reformed. The rebirth of Padiham Football Club came about in 1949 with the opening of the `Arbories` Memorial Sports Ground in Padiham on August 20th 1949 when 1,777 spectators turned up to see the Club`s opening Lancashire Combination fixture of the 1949 50 football season. In 1983, Padiham Football Club became founder members of the North West Counties Football League, however in 1990 they left the league and joined the West Lancashire Football League where they played their football for ten seasons. Padiham returned to the North West Counties Football League for the 2000/2001 season, winning the Premier Division Title in 2012/13 to gain promotion to the Northern Premier League, where they spent two seasons before being relegated back to the North West Counties Football League for the 2015/16 season. Since 1999 the club has spent in the region of ÂŁ600,000 upgrading their ground, of which the club is extremely proud.

History of West…PART 5 – The Twenties…continued 1927-28 saw the Aggregate Trophy won for the second time from South Salford who reversed the roles in Division 1 after a play-off match to decide the championship. This match was described in the press as a ‘fitting climax to the season’s even contest for scores were level in the 124th of the 130 minutes admirable match’, eventually won 4-1 by Salford after extra time. The second team were runners-up to Royton in Division A which left both teams runnersup for the third time.

second team finished runners-up yet again. Division A had been extended into two sections of nine clubs each and although West Didsbury won Section A, were defeated 1-0 by the winners of Section B, Union Chapel of Fallowfield, in the Championship play-off.

The disappointment of the second team was somewhat compensate for when Royton were defeated in the inaugural final of the League’s latest competition, the Subsidiary Cup, after a 2-2 draw in the first game. However this turned into a long saga when West’s 5-3 victory in the replay was annulled by the league as Royton protested about the inclusion of R Tinsley in the West Didsbury team, as he had just completed 32 games in the first team that season! The replay was ordered to be replayed as the league also discovered that Royton were far from innocent and had included a former professional in their side. Eventually the third meeting between the clubs saw West victorious by 3-0 at the start of the next season as all the disputes meant that the game had to be held over until September 1928.

“I as a player with Bradford Parish in the later 1920s and early 30s remember many hard battles with West Didsbury who in those days were one of the very best teams in the League. The ground at Christies was surrounded two or three deep all round the pitch, such was the interest in the leading Lancashire and Cheshire League sides”.

The league title continued to elude both teams and as the Twenties ended the

The sizeable local support continued to follow the fortunes of the club as former L & C League President, Mr W A Williamson recalled:

So the club completed its first ten years in the L & C League having quickly established itself as one of the top teams of the Twenties, and without doubt this was the most successful period in the history of the West Didsbury club to date.

From the 1920’s to 2017… The development of our Club will continue next season as we plan to run a West Women’s team.

Around the league…from last Saturday’s games… with Ian Templeman Bogey Wonderland for City In football, the term “bogey team” is often described when noting that one team seems to get the better of another on a regular basis over a period of time. However, although such rivalries are usually established after many years of competition, the arrival of Carlisle City in the League in the summer has probably set a record in attracting the tag. City’s 3-1 home win over AFC Blackpool on Tuesday completed a trio of victories for the Cumbrians over Stuart Parker’s men, following on from 3-2 victories in both the league and cup on the Fylde coast earlier in the season. No doubt City will already be looking forward to the fixtures between the two sides next season. Sharp shooting Bucks We have already made mention on these pages of Bootle’s goalscoring power this season, but after recent results it would be remiss not to mention it again. From the off, the Bucks have been up at the top of the goals per game ratio charts, but they really ramped it up last week, with a 6-0 win at Ashton Athletic being followed with a 7-1 win at Hanley Town on Saturday. The Bucks have only failed to hit the back of the net in three games all season, and it looks like many a goalkeeper will continue to be picking the ball out of the back of the net when facing Joe Doran’s men.

Five for the Road One team quietly going about their business in an efficient manner are Maine Road, whose 32 win over Congleton Town on Saturday – a result achieved after being 2-0 down at half time – extended their unbeaten run to five games. Those five games have also seen them net eleven goals in the process, form that has moved them into the top five for goals per game ratios. With a cluster of clubs in mid-table separated by only a few points, Road’s route towards the top six could be mapped out if their current form continues. Lairds get a break It’s often easy to focus on teams at the top of the table, so let’s give a shout out this week to Cammell Laird 1907, who ended a run of five straight defeats with a 1-1 draw at home to Barnoldswick Town on Saturday. Zac Hardacre’s 89th minute equaliser was a rare bright moment in an otherwise difficult few weeks for Lairds, and the challenge now is to build on that result in the coming weeks. Craig Cairns on fire – all defences terrified… One man who deserves a mention for his recent goalscoring exploits is Runcorn Town striker Craig Cairns. Runcorn Town have scored 69 goals in all competitions this season, and Craig has bagged 32 of those, including two last Tuesday at Cheadle Town followed by a hat trick at Squires Gate on Saturday. Craig would doubtless be the first to say that one man doesn’t make a team, but it’s fair to say that Town would have some goalscoring power to find from elsewhere without Craig in the starting line up.

A big thank you to Dave Cooper for sponsoring our game last Saturday against Ashton Athletic. If you would like to sponsor a game please sign up on the sheet in the club house or ask a committee member, who will be pleased to discuss this further! www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

Nelson 4 West 4 match report‌Tuesday 1 November On a cold night in Lancashire a young West side were twice forced to come from behind to salvage a point at Nelson. Following Saturday's win at home to AFC Darwen manager Steve Settle was forced into two changes as Jordan Poole replaced the injured Nia Bayunu in the centre of defence whilst Ben Steer replaced Rob Black in midfield. Due to heavy traffic, the kick off was delayed until 7:55 with the players not taking the field to warm up until 7:30 with the kit last to arrive. The delay didn't hinder West and they took the lead after just three minutes when Matty Kay's cross from the right found the head of Jonny Poizer and his header curled into the top corner for his 6th goal of the season. The lead last just three minutes as Nelson were awarded a penalty for a trip by Carlos Mendes Gomes at the edge of the area. Despite his penalty heroics on Saturday West goalkeeper Dean Williams could do nothing about this penalty as it was rifled into the top right hand corner by Charles Collinge The goal galvanised Nelson and they were ahead on 10 minutes as West failed to deal with a cross from the right and Dan Burns was afforded a free header from 6 yards out as he nodded into the bottom right hand corner. Nelson, with their tails up, squandered a great chance to make it 3-1 on 17 minutes as a long free kick was hit low into the penalty area but somehow, with the goal at their mercy, failed to hit the target. West fought their way back into the game and Ash Woods forced a superb save from Danny Lever in the Nelson goal forcing him to push a hard volley away from 12 yards out on 22 minutes. Four minutes later the best move of the match to that point saw Ben Steer on the left, his cross found Mendes Gomes whose first touch left his defender for dead but he just fired over the bar. West continued to press and on 32 minutes Matty Kay had a great chance as Mendes Gomes played in Ben Woods on the left; he pulled a superb cross back from the touchline but Matty mis-kicked with the goal in front of him. His miss would go unpunished however as a minute later, a similar move from Ben Woods picked out Ash Woods and he made no mistake drilling his effort in off the underside of the cross bar from 10 yards out; a superb move.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

On 39 minutes Nelson should have retaken the lead when a cross from the right found its way to the far post but somehow it was skied over the bar from less than 6 yards out. At the other end Mendes Gomes ghosted past his defender into the penalty area forcing Lever into a good block at his near post. In first half stoppage time West re-took the lead when a Matty Kay corner found Anthony Potts at the far post and the West captain tapped it in for his first goal of the season to give West a first half lead. In the second half the first major incident came on 53 minutes as Dean Williams came out to punch away a high ball but was dazed upon impact with the ground. Both sets of players and the referee responded immediately putting Deano into the recovery position before being checked over by both teams physio's. After a five minute delay, amazingly, he was able to continue to finish out the game. The stoppage rattled West and Nelson almost levelled on 58 minutes when they headed over from a whipped in free kick. West responded themselves with terrific effort from Ben Woods as he struck a hard effort from 30 yards out forcing Lever into a superb save to tip it round the post. In such an open game another goal was inevitable and it fell to the home side on 68 minutes as West failed to deal with a corner and Ben Connelly header, despite being headed off the line, was adjudged to have crossed the line by the linesman. Suddenly the momentum was with the Admirals and Williams came up with two big saves, both from one-on-ones as West struggled to regain control of the game. With nine minutes remaining Williams was again called into action to save at his near post. However he could do nothing to prevent Nelson's fourth goal on 87 minutes as West failed to clear the ball on the right hand side, it fell to Charlie Lloyd inside the penalty area who turned it home with the West bench appealing for a Nelson handball. West weren't finished however and two minutes later they responded with a superb attack with Ash Woods driving home Matty Kay's low cross on the slide to hand West their share of the spoils. West might have won it in stoppage time when substitute Rob Black volleyed into the hands of Lever but never side could find a winner in a thrilling an incident filled game.
