10th November 2012 – Abbey Hey

Welcome to Brookburn Road today for the visit of Abbey Hey who have been making waves since the season started and are currently flying high near the top of the table. They had an excellent run in the FA Cup before going down to FC Halifax Town and enjoyed a 100% record in league fixtures up until last Saturday when they narrowly lost 0-1 to Atherton Collieries. I’m sure they will be all out to get back to winning ways today so we know we are in for a hard game. After our string of home games and positive results we were back on the road last Saturday and unfortunately the short trip to Flixton resulted in a very complacent performance well below our recent best when again a missed penalty cost us dear as we conceded 2 soft second half goals to give Northwich Villa a victory they fully deserved on the day. This was a good reminder that there is little difference between the teams in the league and that we have to compete effectively in every fixture, ignoring the league table positions and focusing on putting in a wholehearted team performance. We can match anyone in the division but we’ve returned empty handed from Darwen, Cheadle Town and Atherton LR when some defensive mistakes and missed chances have cost us several extra points. With 4 games to go to the season’s half way mark we’ve some work to do to keep in contention with the top of the table. Off the field last Saturday’s Community Bonfire Event was again very successful with several hundred thronging the ground to enjoy a fine firework display. We don’t know the precise number but from the gate receipts we had around 200 families [2 adults and 2 children] which is giving us food for thought on how to begin to attract more back on a match day to enjoy the football. We had a lot of positive feedback from the night and as everyone literally walked in from the neighbouring area there is a lot of goodwill to build on. A big thank you to Rob Madden for his hard work both on the night with the fireworks, and then again on Sunday morning doing the unseen bit with his wife Diane and clearing up the debris littered on and around the pitch margins. Please refer to the Bonfire article later on. OTHER NEWS The Committee is finalising a Football Development Plan to accompany our bid to The Football Foundation for grant assistance for the new grass pitches adjoining the ground and more detail on this is on the centre piece spread inside. This will enable all our teams to play at Brookburn Road and make more effective use of the clubhouse and training facilities. The work should now get underway next Spring with the new area of playing fields then hopefully ready for use from late summer 2013 and ready for the 2013-14 season. FORTHCOMING FIXTURES Next week the reserves are at home to Runcorn and then the next 1st team home game is on 24th November is in the First Division Trophy when we host Atherton LR. In December we face near neighbours Cheadle Town here on 15th, followed by Leek CSOB on Boxing Day and Irlam on Saturday 29th, all at 3pm. View from the Dugout How a week changes things! We achieved our best result of the season and probably one of our best ever in deservedly beating Norton United here in the Cup two weeks ago, what a great team performance against Premier League opposition. We took a deserved lead and played a lot of controlled football, however, after conceding a free kick Norton equalised. Pleasingly we kept up the tempo in the second half and scored another two! In fact we could have had another couple if our finishing had been more ruthless. So rightly we entered last week’s game against Northwich Villa full of confidence and optimism following some very good performances. The standard of the pitch was very good and therefore it was disappointing to see us failing to make our passes in every area of the pitch as we continued to give the ball away even when we were not under pressure. Our poor ball retention meant our chances were limited but Tommy Walsh was unlucky not to score when he spun and shot forcing a good save from the keeper. We even got a break when the referee awarded us a dubious penalty. Gareth Thomas stepped up and scored, but then missed with the retake. We expected more from the players in the second half as too many simply hadn’t performed to their usual standard. Unfortunately, the disappointment and frustration continued and we put ourselves under unnecessary pressure. After conceding, Andy had seen enough and made 3 changes, but this didn’t seem to make much difference and we couldn’t find any rhythm, tempo or quality in our performance. A huge disappointment for the coaching staff, but we put this behind us and prepared well for the Abbey Hey game today which be another really tough game. Steve Eckersley

Ground Safety In the interest of spectator comfort and safety, the following conditions apply at the clubs Brookburn Road ground and must be observed at all times. 

The chanting of racist or obscene chanting is strictly forbidden.

Glasses, bottles, gas canisters, knives, darts, tools, flag poles or any other articles likely to cause injury are not permitted into the ground.

Thank you Chorlton! Last Saturday saw the club putting on its annual Community Bonfire and Firework celebration. This event has now become established as a real flagship Community Event as well as a principal fundraising event for the club. This year again saw several hundred people attend a well managed and hugely enjoyable evening.

These included many families who are now regularly attendees as well as a number of people visiting Brookburn Road for the first time. Whilst we have been running the bonfire for a number of years now, the growth in the numbers of people attending the event and the positive feedback we receive has increased significantly over the past three years. Organisation of the event involved a significant number of club members taking responsibility for:      

Collecting admission monies Running the bar and beer table Selling sweets Setting off the firework display Stewarding the event Clearing up on Sunday

and the Club Committee offers its thanks to everyone of you.

In addition, it would like to give a special ‘Thank you’ to a number of people who are friends and family of club members who willingly helped us on the night. A great effort all round and testimony to our reputation and community offer when so many people again stayed local and loyal despite competing events elsewhere. Our visitorsâ&#x20AC;Ś Abbey Hey Formed in 1902 as Abbey Hey W.M.C Early Years - During the formative years and during the two World Wars the Club was disbanded and reformed on a number of occasions. The Club played in a number of leagues during the intervening years but really came into its own in the 1960s taking in the players of the Admiralty Gunnery Engineering Department. Alf Gentry was manager of Abbey at the time but decided with the influx of the new players he would step down in favour of the manager of AGED, Danny Danson. Danny went on to have great success with the team. Alf stayed on in a senior position within the Club for many years to share in the success of the Club during the following years.The new players and manager made up the backbone the club during the 1960s with some of staying on for years after their playing careers had ended, notably Allan Vaughan who occupied the positions of treasurer, and secretary as well as running the Vets team for many years. Ken Brown also stayed on as manager after Danny retired with some great years winning numerous honours. In 1978 the Club decided to apply for a position in the Manchester League. The application was successful and the Club began playing in 2nd Division, winning promotion in their first season. This meant that the Club had to find an enclosed ground suitable for playing their home games. The nearest ground available at this time was in fact miles away in Chorlton on St. Werburghs Road. The ground was owned by a car dealership and was being used by a local school. This was to be the start of many successful years in this League winning the Premiership title five time as well as coming runners up on numerous occasions together with winning many cups. After two years Lookers reneged on the deal and the club was once again compelled to move, this time to a ground much nearer home named after a prominent Council luminary Godfrey Erman who donated the Ground to the local populous of Abbey Hey in perpetuity for their use as a recreational area. The next 18 years were fairly successful with the Club winning the Gilgryst Cup under manager Jim Whittaker and the League title and the Gilgryst Cup under Dave Denby. After many years on Godfrey's, Abbey were told that from the start of the new season they would not be playing on the ground, so once again the Club was forced to move or fold. A new home at the old English Steel ground was arranged on a season to season basis with the owners Clayton Analine. After only two years the ground was sold to a large local builder. However, during the two years the Club had been on the ground they were also in negotiations with Crossley Motors Ltd to buy a disused ground they owned in Goredale Avenue, Gorton. Matters had reached an impasse between the Club and Crossleys when Manchester City Council intervened, this seemed to tip the scales in favour of the Club who were asked to make an offer for the ground which they did and which was promtly accepted. Jim Clark was to join the Club during these turbulent times as manager of the first team a position he was to occupy for the next eighteen years with fantastic success. Jim managed to win the Manchester League Premier League Championships Five times as well as numerous cups and honours for the Club. In 1997 the Club successfully applied for membership of the North West Counties and started life in the second division. In the first season Jim Clark managed to clinch the runners up spot after a fantastic finishing day of the season when a win had to be secured! Promotion meant that the Club had to install floodlights and true to form these were designed and installed within a couple of months. The biggest job during the ground improvements was the building of the new clubhouse and dressing rooms which were required as the old ones were constantly being damaged by the local vandals a curse that still continues to this present date. Planning permission was obtained and the work was started once again the vast majority of it being carried out by our own club members. In 2004 ten members of the committee were awarded long service awards for their 25 Years in the service of Grass Roots Football by Manchester County FA. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Improving Chorlton Meadows Hardy Farm Playing Fields, the former University Sports Pavilion and the areas of Special Biological Interest on parts of Chorlton Meadows are to be improved over the coming year as a result of a comprehensive recreation and environmental improvement scheme. The areas of private open land will remain accessible to the community and new grass playing fields will be laid out and improve facilities and healthy activities for young people, and existing eyesores and graffiti removed. The key elements are… The VISION The shared Vision for Hardy Farm Playing Fields is active use and collaborative community partnership. Key FEATURES  MAINTAINING PUBLIC ACCESS via the existing public footpaths and permitting informal access through the private land from Hardy Lane and Brookburn Road to and from Jacksons Bridge.  REFURBISHMENT and RE-USE of the former sports pavilion buildings on Hardy Lane to provide new accommodation as a residential training centre for Betel of Britain.  IMPROVED MAINTENANCE of the areas of Special Biological Importance [SBI] which adjoin the public footpath through the area from Hardy Lane to Jacksons Bridge and the river Mersey.  RESTORATION OF GRASS PLAYING FIELDS on Hardy Farm Playing Fields to provide new facilities for local community football clubs.  ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENTS and a new boundary fence to the existing football ground and removal of the graffiti covered 1960’s concrete post and panel fence.  NEW TREE PLANTING to the margins of the Playing Fields to strengthen and enhance existing tree belts and maintain wildlife habitats  NEW HEDGEROWS to provide new wildlife habitat and enhance biodiversity

The BENEFITS The tangible benefits will be improvement and management of an area which has been underused and neglected for many years. This will provide and safeguard a variety of formal sporting and informal community uses and activities. The area will become a better managed and more widely used resource which will continue to enjoy permissive rights of access although remaining as private land vested in a charity. WORKING TOGETHER These proposals are the result of ongoing dialogue and collaborative working between the landowners, Betel of Britain, Greater Manchester Ecology Unit, Friends of Chorlton Meadows and local residents, particularly regular users of the public footpaths.

First team match reportsâ&#x20AC;Ś Saturday 27th October: WEST 3 Norton United 1 West continued to impress as they moved into the last 16 of the Challenge Cup after a 3-1 victory against Norton United, who 10 days previously had made their own headlines defeating Stoke City in the Staffordshire Senior Cup. West were on the front foot from the start and had all the early play before Norton had any sort of chance after 17 minutes when the Norton forward shot wide. West responded immediately and on 20 minutes took the lead their early play deserved when Lee Malkin calmly slotted home after good work by Lewis Schofield whose cross was headed on by Tre Baldwin. Norton struggled to get any foothold in the game but then equalised against the run of play after 37 minutes when West were punished for conceding a soft free kick in midfield and from the resultant free kick the ball was headed across goal for Kieran Ball to score and leave the scores at 1-1 at half time. The second period started much as the first with West again creating the early chances as Aston shot wide on 49 minutes and then Schofield hit the post after a great solo run five minutes later. Just after the hour Norton escaped again when Malkin played in Baldwin to then set up Schofield, who blazed high over the bar with the goal gaping. West were however not to be denied and regained the lead when Schofield scored direct from a free kick which beat the wall and the keeper just inside the far post. With 10 minutes left Lee Shillito and Tommy Walsh entered the fray and quickly combined for Walsh to turn his man inside and out before beating the keeper at the near post to leave the final score 3-1. West travel to Bootle, another Premier Division side, as they join neighbours Maine Road in the last 16.

Saturday 3rd November: Northwich Villa 2 WEST 0 There is not much to report on last Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s away game at Northwich Villa, played at Flixton, when the match notes barely ran to 10 lines, and our performance was on a par with the worst of the season so far. The game started slowly and stayed that way with little tempo or pace as we tried to figure out how to break down a Northwich side whose obvious tactic was to get as many men as possible aorund and behind the ball and aim to hit us on the break. Tommy Walsh had a chance after 4 minutes but was wide of the mark from a Gareth Thomas cross and on 7 minutes Lewis Schofiled was brough down but the low free kick was again off target. On 20 minutes Villa appeals were waived away when Barnett was felled in the penalty area and as the temperature was raised slightly Thomas and the Villa 11 went in the referees notebook. After 36 minutes the referee awarded us a penalty adjudging a handball from a Schofield cross and Thomas stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way only for the ref to rule out for encroachment. Take 2 was the same only for the ball to rebound clear after hitting the post. We stepped up the tempo and were unlucky not to go ahead when the Villa keeper dropped the ball only for it to be cleared and then a couple of minutes before half time Tommy was unlucky when he turned the defender only to see hit shot crash back off the bar with the keeper static. We started the second period with more urgency and a cracking Lewis Schofield free kick was headed off the line, and then Scott Jones shot over after a good run into the box. Ten minutes into the second period Northwich went ahead after a good one two on the edge of our area allowed the Villa forward in to beat Simpson with a low shot drilled just inside the post. On the hour the referee substituted himself because of sickness and 2 minutes later we were 2-0 down when a route one punt from the keeper saw Kwame Barnett hold off Aston to turn a slot home the second.

Reserve team match reports… Saturday 3rd November: WEST 3 Glossop North End 1 West Didsbury Reserves played under flood lights for the first time in their latest league game against current third placed, Glossop North End. West started very well pressing Glossop from the start and in the 4th minute Bobby Ashcroft, playing in left midfield, played the ball inside to Stephen Madden who played a first time ball to the advancing Kyle Hendley. He struck the ball from the edge of the penalty area which flew passed the Glossop keeper and into the back of the net. An excellent start to the game. From the restart West pressured the Glossop midfield winning the ball and with some excellent passing playedthe ball in to Matt Eckersley who struck the ball just over the bar. West continued to press and both Bobby Ashcroft and Stephen Madden forced the Glossop keeper into making last ditched saves. Despite having the majority of play West did not capitalize on their advantage which allowed Glossop to get more into the game. West began to be pinned back and started to defend too deep which put pressure on the West goal. In the 24th minute a defensive error allowed the Glossop number 8 to pick up a mistimed pass and drill a low hard shot into the West net. West heads however did not drop and they continued to work hard to regain the lead. This came in the 40th minute when right back Tommy Hendley played a well timed ball down the right for Stephen Madden to run onto, he beat the full back, cut inside, road a tackle from the advancing Glossop centre back and beat the Glossop keeper at his near post to make the score 2-1. In the first minute of injury time West had a free kick midway in the Glossop half, Matt Eckersleys shot came off a defender, the ball fell to Jon Chrimes, who's shot came off the keeper for the defence to clear. A very good end to the first half. Glossop came out in the second half pushing West back again and in the 65th minute the Glossop number 10 broke away only for Dale Newbrook in the West goal to deny the striker a goal with a supurb save. West continued to counter attack and forced a number of corners, the best one just being headed wide of the upright by Nathan Wakelam. With 75 minutes gone the ball was played through to Gary Lilley who had earlier been moved to a more central roll. Gary challenged the advancing keeper and was brought down in the 6 yard box, the following tangle of feet gave the referee no choice but to award a penalty and send both players off. Jon Chrimes stepped up to score the penalty to make the score 3-1. The game then seemed to get out of control with several unnecessary fouls which saw the referee produce a number of yellow cards in quick succession. Glossop then seemed to lose their discipline and late on in the game saw 3 additional players sent off for second yellow cards resulting in them finishing with only 7 players on the pitch. A disappointing end to a game which was very competitive but not in an aggressive way. However it was an excellent win for West, certainly our best of the season so far with excellent commitment from all the players. Robert Madden

NWCFL recent news… Wigan Robin Park – the Robins were nominated for “Club of the Year” in the annual Wigan Borough Sports Awards last week. Secretary Taffy Roberts explained: “Although we didn’t win the award, we were honoured to be nominated and had a good night at the DW Stadium, full of inspirational speeches, good company, and excellent food and it was good to meet up with other sports-minded people. “ We’d like to congratulate everybody that was nominated, especially Roy Wood and Aspull Wrestling Club who carried off the “Club of the Year” award. Padiham – the club house at the Arbories will be used as a polling station on Thursday 15th November for the Police and Crime Commissioner elections that are being held that day. The club will be open all the way through from 7 am to 10 pm. Meanwhile, Lancashire County Councillor Sharon Wilkinson has approved an application from the club to the Council’s Local Member Grants Scheme for £500 to help with the purchase of some playing kit.

STORY?

Newly elected North West Counties League side West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury. West first played in the Manchester Alliance League until the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918). After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as the League did not permit association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A and stayed in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in that league until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. Many of the current committee were players in that league. The club played at Christie Playing Fields from before 1914 but had to relocate when given notice to quit by the Playing Fields Society in the mid 80’s when that body decided to sell the land for commercial gain. After several years nomadic existence the club kicked off the 1997-98 season at their splendid new home at The Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road, and began to develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold and secured the new facilities via a Lottery grant, new sponsors and fundraising, but without a penny of help from the Playing Fields Society proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect our new location in Chorlton and we were elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 Season West won Manchester League silverware for the first time, lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final.

With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, who had previously managed at Leigh RMI, the 2009/10 season was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield, (the third consecutive year we have been in the final) and finishing runners-up in the league. The second team won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic points total (65 points out of 72 possible). This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in the history of the Manchester League dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The clubs ‘A’ team finished and the Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club in every sense. In recent seasons several players who started at West have been signed by top non league clubs, but such is the spirit of the club that many players return to what they see as a family club. The club now looks forward to fulfilling its ambition to play at the highest possible level it can whilst continuing to be run as a community club and transition to the NWCFL. The ground and facilities have been further improved and floodlights erected to meet grading requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. The club was duly elected to the NWCFL at the AGM on 16th June 2012.
