Editorial & Welcome to… AFC Darwen This afternoon we welcome the players officials and supporters of AFC Darwen to Brookburn Road for our first encounter here in the NWCFL Premier Division. AFC Darwen was formed in 2009 as successor to the town’s previous team Darwen FC which dated back to 1870 and was an early pioneer of professional football reaching the semi finals of the FA Cup in 1880-1881. Darwen FC were also a Football League member club from 1891 to 1899 before joining the Lancashire League in 1900 and continuing in the NWCFL until the club was wound in 2008-09. AFC Darwen was founded soon after this unfortunate event initially playing in the West Lancs league before being elected to the NWCFL for the 2010-11 season, and continuing to play at the historic Anchor Ground in Darwen. The first competitive games between our two clubs followed during the 2012-13 season when we first played in Div 1 of the NWCFL and during that season Darwen won both games, firstly 2-0 at Darwen in August and then the game here 3-2 in early February 2013. Darwen were well placed above WEST at that stage and looked possibilities for promotion. However it was WEST who put the result behind them very quickly with a great run of results from mid February 13 until the end of the season, winning 14 of the 17 remaining league games to secure promotion. Last season Darwen finished 3rd in Division 1 and became the first club to gain promotion via the play offs by winning the final 5-3 against Hanley Town in front of a bumper crowd of 842 on 5th May 2015. This season the game at Darwen was a contest WEST should have won comfortably after taking an early lead but then squandering numerous clear cut chances to increase the advantage. Then, early in the second half, the game completely changed when Hayden was sent off when as last man he fouled the Darwen forward. Darwen equalised from the spot and then went ahead soon after, leaving West a mountain to climb. The injured Richardson took over in goal but WEST fought back to level through Jonny Poizer at 2-2 and in the dying stages had further chances to claim all 3 points. After the game it was the Darwen fans and officials who were relieved to have secured a point in a very open end to end game. If we get half the excitement and entertainment this afternoon, we’re all in for an enjoyable contest. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT Our last 2 home results either side of Christmas were disappointing but the attendances were significantly up on the corresponding games last season. Although the conditions were difficult on a soft surface, the decisions to play both games were taken with spectator and player safety fully in mind, and those decisions upheld by the visiting match officials. We are extremely grateful for the magnificent support at both games and to those who have sponsored the games. Maintaining the ground and club facilities costs a significant sum each month and the increased attendances and support for the half time draw and clubhouse sales is a vital part of our income. Following on from the late postponement of our game last weekend against Winsford United , today is the 2nd of 3 successive home games for the remainder of January, weather permitting, so please keep up the support even if it’s cold and we’ll keep you warm with the hot drinks and food in the clubhouse before and during the game. Steve Settle’s Notes Good Afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for this afternoon’s fixture against Darwen. It’s a pleasure to be able to welcome Paul Marriott and his staff, players, officials, and fans for what promises to be an exciting game. After our encounter earlier this season ending in a 2-2 draw, todays opponents will represent a tough challenge, particularly given our own inconsistencies and we will have to be at our best to get the right result for us. The last 4-6 weeks have been pretty frustrating for us. We have only played 3 games since the end of November and this has had an impact on our performances. Lots of the momentum we built up in November has been tempered by two 3-0 home defeats. Both games I think we could have won if we had played them during November. It just goes to show at this level you have to be at the top of your game in order to be successful. Having games called off is to be expected at this time of year and we have been upping the intensity in training to try and keep sharp but ultimately the last two home performances have been way below the standard of performance we expect from the players. The next 2 games are really important in the context of our season. 6 points would see us jump back up into the top 6, a position we are all working towards achieving when May comes around. The lads also have opportunities to put themselves at the forefront of our thinking for next season. Whilst a top 6 finish in the league would represent progress, it certainly doesn’t constitute success. We are a pretty ambitious management team and such we have ambitious targets for the next 18 months.
Whilst we are a collective, I have been delighted by some of the individual performances thus far this season. Matt Eckersley at centre half has been exceptional and consistent in his performances, I haven’t seen any better centre half’s in the league. Lee Gavin has also been exceptional in the centre of midfield to the extent that we haven’t really missed last years’ player of the year Gary Lilley (it’s been a massive boost to have him back with us recently and he is looking fitter by the week). Up top Ash Woods has been exceptional. His work rate, attitude and goals have been a major reason why we have performed better this season and we are delighted with his performances. We are also delighted to welcome Nico back after he returned to the midlands over the Christmas period. Nico will be looking to add to his 8 goals this term and 15 would represent a great return from him. On the injury front there is some positive news. Matty Kay has returned to training this week following the ankle knock he picked up against Maine Road and we’ll be looking to get him straight back in the team this weekend. Maine Road 0 West 1…match report West registered their first ever win in the south Manchester derby with a 1-0 victory at Brantinham Road thanks to a first half Matty Kay volley. West manager Steve Settle first derby at the helm and was able to recall Callum Jones, Matt Eckersley, Adam Hilton and Kelvin Lugsden after suspension whilst they were without Anthony Potts and Nic Evangelinos due to illness. West started brightly and had the game’s first chance on three minutes as Matty Kay’s long range effort was deflected wide for a corner. Five minutes later West forced the Maine Road goalkeeper Lewis Fielding into his first save as he parried an Ash Woods effort round the post. On nine minutes Kay went close again as his 30 yard free kick was deflected off the wall and just wide of the post. On 14 minutes Maine Road had their first chance of the game as Hayden Buckley-Smith punched away a free kick for a corner. West took the lead on 17 minutes as a lovely move down the right found Ben Steer in the final third and his low cross was weighted perfectly into the path of Kay who roofed his effort beyond Fielding. Maine Road responded immediately as they won a free kick 25 yards from goal but Buckley-Smith was able to take the effort comfortably for what would be Maine Road’s only effort on target. On 20 minutes West almost made it 2-0 as a low cross from Woods was fired low along the six yard line but Lee Gavin, at full stretch, could only divert the ball wide of the post with an empty net in front of him. Adam Hilton, making his first West start since February 21st, almost marked his first start on his second spell with West with a spectacular goal running the length of the field and drawing Fieldling into another save at his near post from almost point blank range. Hilton dominated the battle on the left hand side so much that his opposite number was subbed on 35 minutes as Maine Road struggled to contain the young winger who made an impressive return to the startling XI. West continued their dominance as Woods forced Fielding into another good save tipping Woods’ left footed effort from the edge of the penalty area round the post. On 39 minutes Maine Road had their best chance of the first half as Matthew Morgan brought down a long

ball, turned and whipped his long range effort just over the bar. West’s best chance since the goal came on 42 minutes as a superb Lewis Schofield cross from the left found Kay at the far post and his header back across goal just evaded the top of the crossbar and the scoreline remained 1-0 at the break. The second half begun in the same fashion as the first half ended as West pressure continued with Fielding called into making another big save at his near post before Captain Mark Rogers headed the resultant corner onto the crossbar. On 56 minutes Adam Hilton almost added another collector’s item of a goal to the one he scored in the same fixture last season as he again beat his man on the left hand side, spotted the Maine Road goalkeeper off his line and lobbed him from 36 yards with only the goalkeepers outstretched finger tips preventing him from adding a second. A combination of the high tempo of the first half, the heavy (but otherwise excellent) pitch and several heavy challenges from Maine Road saw West unable to continue the free flowing football of the first half with quite the same effect. Fortunately for West Maine Road offered little in the way of direct attempts on target as the impressive centre back pairing of Matt Eckersley and Kelvin Lugsden, making just his second West appearance, accompanied by the equally excellent Mark Rogers in midfield kept Maine Road at bay. Settle made the changes replacing Lugsden with Sam Dee, moving Callum Jones to centre back, Yahya Saeed replacing Adam Hilton on the left wing and Ben Richardson, made his first appearance since suffering a broken foot in August, replacing the injured Steer on the right. Richardson might have scored with his first chance as, on 73 minutes, his shot from the right was brilliantly saved by the Maine Road goalkeeper before the rebound was volleyed over. As time wound down the rain came down as both teams pumped it long in a bid to find a goal and it was Maine Road who had their best chance of the second half in the 4th minute of stoppage time as Hughes fired a volley over the bar from long range as West held on to secure a first ever win over Maine Road and were applauded off the field by an appreciative traveling West support in front of an incredible crowd of 340.

West 0 Runcorn Town 3 ‌match report West began 2016 in disappointing fashion as they slumped to their 8th home league defeat of the season with a 3-0 loss to Runcorn Town. West manager Steve Settle was forced into several changes as he was without Matty Kay and Joe Shaw through injury as well as the absences of Callum Jones and Nic Evangelinos. There were some positives for West as Anthony Potts was recalled to the starting lineup after missing the Maine Road game and Benjamin Richardson made his first start for West since breaking his foot away to AFC Darwen in August. There was also a recall for Gary Lilley to the substitutes bench. West should have taken the lead after just two minutes when Ash Woods ran the length of the field, cut inside and his shot from a narrow angle was spelled by Runcorn Town goalkeeper, and former West player, Danny Lever could only parry the shot into the path of Richardson but his rebound effort was brilliantly saved from point blank range. It would prove a costly miss as Runcorn Town took the lead on 10 minutes when a Town corner was whipped in and clipped the top of the crossbar on its way out of play. However the referee overruled the linesman and it was converted at the far post despite Anthony Potts being wrestled to the floor before he could head it clear with Grant converting at the far post after a flick on. The setback didn't deter West who had the better of the chances but couldn't force Lever into a significant save as Ben Steer fired into his hands from long range, Richardson had a deflected shot tipped over the bar after some good West build up play. The misses were punished further by Runcorn Town on 40 minutes when a cross from the left by Paul Shanley evaded the head of Lewis Schofield at the far post and Rob Ablewhite finished it off from close range to give Runcorn a 2-0 half time lead.

The second half was two minutes old when a cross from Adam Hilton on the left found Ben Steer but Lever was up to the task and tipped it over the bar, From the resultant corner Matt Eckersley's shot was deflected wide. Runcorn Town remained dangerous at the other end as Declan Gregson's looping effort from the edge of the penalty area struck the woodwork. Runcorn followed up on 57 minutes when Grant volleyed a Shanley cross and forced Hayden Buckley-Smith into a very good save to push it round the post. With time running out and the rain making the conditions increasingly difficult West rang the changes with Jonny Poizer and Gary Lilley replacing Richardson and Hilton. Matt Eckersley had arguably West's best chance of the second half as a corner came out to him and his low shot was palmed onto the post by Lever. On 87 minutes Buckley-Smith was called into action again making a great save from an Ablewhite header. The game was put to rest in the first minute of (six minute of) stoppage time when a quick Lever kick from a West attack cleared everyone with Martlland running onto it and slotting it into the bottom corner. Runcorn Town perfectly displayed their counter attacking threat as the second and third goals came after a West attack accompanied by clinical finishing. From the kick off West almost pulled a goal back as Lever spilled a low Woods cross on the goal line into the path of Poizer but the West sub in anticipation of a rebound watched it stick in the mud and cleared before he could tap it in. Steer late on flashed a half volley wide but the goalkeeper Danny Lever was able to claim a well earned clean sheet on his return to Brookburn Road as well as both goalkeepers later earning the man of the match award.

2015 Review Part One January to April
January 2015 began for West in Ashton-in-Makerfield as they travelled to Ashton Athletic for the first game of the calendar year but kicked off the New Year with a 3-0 defeat. A 2-0 loss on the coast to Squires Gate followed before registering a terrific 3-0 win at home to St Helens Town thanks to goals from Adam Hilton, Matt Eckersley and Jordan Poole. The rest of February was a struggle as West returned to Winsford and conceded four again with only a late Kieran Brocklehurst consolation for comfort. Defeats at Congleton Town (1-2) and Colne (0-5) followed with only Anthony Potts getting on the scoresheet.
Away from the first team the Reserves registered an incredible 6-1 win against Cheshire League One side Warrington Town Reserves in the JA Walton Challenge Trophy with goals from Tyler Ferguson (2), Tre Baldwin-Willis (2), Tom Webb and Max Camilleri. The Youth team lost twice and drew once with their result a 2-2 draw away to St Helens Town.
February February was a much busier month for West as four of their five games came away from home with them starting in Winsford with a 4-2 defeat against 1874 Northwich. West found themselves 4-0 down after 20 minutes before a late rally with goals from Nic Evangelinos and a stunning strike from Nic Evangelinos gave the score-line greater respectability. Valentine’s Day brought national headlines as indie band and local supporters Dutch Uncles released their 4th album with an airing at Brookburn Road after West’s MEN UNITED Cup quarter final tie against Bootle. A crowd of 133 saw Bootle run out 3-0 winners but despite this the day was a success off the field.

Elsewhere, the Reserves registered an impressive 4-2 win at home to Moore United thanks to a hat-trick from Endo Chilaka and a goal from Rhys Bailey-Morton. The Youth team registered a landmark win in the North West Youth Alliance defeating AFC Fylde 3-2 for their first win in 2015.
March If February saw West on their travels March saw them stay at home as they embarked on a run of seven consecutive home games, six of which happened in March. Home defeats to AFC Liverpool (2-3) and Bootle (1-4) kicked off the month with David Short offering some light for West supporters netting all three goals in his first appearances for the club.
A run of seven consecutive defeats was ended in one of West’s best performances of the season as they dismantled Alsager Town 4-0 at home thanks to goals from Nic Evangelinos, Scott Mason, Kieran Brocklehurst and debutant Dan Russell. A 1-0 home defeat to form side Colne followed thanks to a controversial winner but Premier Division status was secured one match later as West defeated Bacup & Rossendale Borough. Bacup came into the New Yar with just five points in the league but had rallied to within touching distance of safety. A thrilling game ensued with Captain Mark Rogers and Tre Baldwin-Willis netting and physio Donncha Murphy making his debut in goal. Murphy was only denied a clean sheet on his debut by a late goal which ensured a nervy ending. Sadly West couldn’t end the month with a win as they lost 2-1 at home to high flying Squires Gate with Dan Russell netting his second goal for West. March saw more success for Ian Depeiaza’s Youth side as they registered wins over Bolton Wyresdale (5-2) and Nelson (4-2) before defeating Bootle in the Semi Final of the President’s Cup on Penalties.
April April marked the end of an era for West as long serving manager Andy Nelson announced his retirement from the game to take up a post on the leagues committee with Steve Settle later confirmed as his replacement. On the field West kicked off the month with a 11 draw at home to Silsden, with Dave Short netting his fourth goal of the season before losing a narrow South Manchester Derby at Maine Road 1-0 on the Bank Holiday Monday. A return trip to Silsden was forced to be made on a Monday night in which a threadbare West side which featured just 13 players were demolished 6-1. Scott Mason netted his 9th goal of the season from the penalty spot. West’s final home game against Runcorn Linnets was an emotional one as Andy Nelson’s final game with both teams giving him a guard of honour before kick-off. A huge crowd of 220 was on show for Andy’s final game, with the added twist of Linnets still able to claim the title. However West’s players rose
to the occasion as David Short gave West a first half lead before a late Scott Mason penalty ensured a fitting send off for Andy Nelson. West finished their season on a high a week later as the management trio of Steve Brockley, Rob Madden and Steve Eckersley took caretaker charge to register a 3-1 win away to AFC Blackpool. A stunning strike from Dave Short and goals from Scott Mason and Kieran Brocklehurst secured three points and a final league position of 16th in West’s second season in Step 5. Elsewhere in April, West’s Youth side registered an incredible win with a 9-0 hammering of Vauxhall Motors in the President’s Cup final played at Daisy Hill. Four goals from Felix Senga, a brace each from Roger Degue and Jardel Depiaza with a stunning finish from Akime Pinder saw West’s youth lift the Trophy in front of dozens of proud supporters, committee and parents. The Reserves went winless in six in April but the highlight saw them come from behind three times to earn a draw against Altrincham Reserves at home with goals from Marcus Watkin, Ismael Camera and Rhys BaileyMorton. Andy Nelson oversaw what was described by Chairman Glyn Meacher as the “most successful era in the clubs history” in which West rose from the First Division of the Manchester League to the Premier Division of the NWCFL. His record as manager stood at 224 games, winning 115, drawing 28 and losing 81. West scored 405 goals and conceded 338. Andy’s NWCFL record stands at: P-115 W-50 D-17 L-49 F-190 A-187

History of AFC Darwen THE FORMATION OF AFC DARWEN At the end of the 2008/2009 season Darwen Football Club ceased to exist after the club was wound up due to bad debts. One of the previous owners had systematically destroyed the club financially but, also discredited its reputation within the town which resulted in lower attendances and a reduction in the number of volunteers that gave up their valuable time to help keep the club running. With debts in excess of £60.000 it was inevitable that the club could not survive; fortunately the team managed to fulfil all of their fixtures in the 2008/09 season before the club was wound up. It was decided that Darwen still had the desire to field a town team, and although various people had left the club; meetings began to take place to discuss the future of Darwen Football Club. Derek Slater, former club secretary and reserve team manager of Darwen FC, had already set the ball rolling by forming AFC Darwen, a not for profit organisation. The lease was then secured back from the local council and AFC Darwen rose from the ashes. THE WEST LANCASHIRE FOOTBALL LEAGUE The F.A. instructed that AFC Darwen would start life at step 6 in the football pyramid, so their inaugural season began in the West Lancashire Football League. The aim of the club was to gain its place back in the North West Counties League, and go on to compete at a higher level. The club now had a good solid foundation, with 13 youth teams representing the club; which out of those 10 played on a Sunday in the East Lancashire Alliance and 3 teams competed on a Saturday in the Accrington and District Football League. With the age range from 7 to 15 year olds and with new teams to follow the infrastructure of the club was in a sound position to move forward. The club is now in the hands of people that live and breathe football, but more importantly understand what it takes to run a club at this level.

AFC Darwen’s first ever competitive game took place at the Anchor ground on Saturday 11th July 2009 in a pre-season friendly against AFC Liverpool from the North West Counties League. With Darwen winning 3-0 things looked bright for the future. With high expectations of a good season AFC Darwen soon realised that life in the West Lancashire football league wasn’t going to be easy. Results over the first few games were inconsistent up until October 2009, after which the team went on a disastrous run of 8 straight defeats. With the realisation that the team was not progressing as expected, it was decided that a change in the management team was required. The difficult decision to replace Dennis Hill was made and Kenny Langford took over the reins as the first team manager. Results immediately picked up and although the title was out of reach, at least the team could push on and try and finish in a respectable position. AFC Darwen finished 8th, with a record of 13 wins, 3 draws and 14 defeats, goals scored 42, conceded 54. THE NORTH WEST COUNTIES FOOTBALL LEAGUE. At the end of the 2009/10 season AFC Darwen gained re-election back into the North West Counties Football League after achieving the required ground grading standards to compete at that level. The main aim of the club back in the NWCFL was to steady the ship and cement their place in the league. AFC Darwen finished 13th,, with a record of 9 wins, 10 draws and 12 defeats, goals scored 37, conceded. 62. A respectable position for their first season. During the close season before the start of the 2012/13 campaign the structure of the club changed. Due to personal reasons and business commitments Derek Slater decided that he could no longer run both the senior and junior sides. It was decided that Kenny Langford would become the sole director of AFC Darwen the structural change resulted in Kenny taking over the day to day running of the club, and the responsibility for the first and reserve teams. This allowed Derek the time to focus on the development of the junior teams within the club. The changes helped the club the move forward more positively “not only on the pitch, but also on the development of the ground.
AFC Darwen History continued‌ AFC Darwen finished 5th, with a record of 20 wins, 3 draws and 11 defeats, goals scored 79, conceded 57. AFC also reached the semi-final of the 1st division trophy. The 2013/14 season proved to be disappointing for the first team, finishing 9th, with a record of 15 wins, 7 draws and 14 defeats, goals scored 64, conceded 64. However they had successful cup runs; yet again reaching the semi-final of the first division trophy. They also reached the semifinal of the Lancashire Challenge Trophy narrowly losing to Chorley. This was a major achievement with AFC Darwen being the first club at North West Counties league level to reach a semi-final in such a prestigious competition. The reserves under the leadership of Mathew Pilkington won the clubs first silverware by winning the reserve division cup; beating Irlam on penalties after the tie finished at 2-2 after extra-time. It was also decided that for the club to progress the youth teams would have to be fully amalgamated to the club and play under the same L.F.A. Registration as the first and reserve teams At the start of the 2014/15 campaign, not many could have predicted just how incredible the season would turn out to be. AFC Darwen got off to a good start and looked to be one of the favourites to gain promotion, however with the team competing well in the cup competitions and the weather starting to play havoc with the fixtures, Darwen soon found themselves with a mountain to climb. The club was dealt another blow when Kenny stepped down as manager due to personal reasons. At least the majority of players remained at the club. Nick Lloyd took over as caretaker manager for the remainder of the season. Although one or two players left Nick managed to strengthen the squad, and he also promoted players from the reserves. The club policy of fielding a reserve team proved pivotal towards the success of the first team at the latter stages of the season due to injuries and suspensions. After beating Ashton Town in the First Division Cup Semi-Final at the end of March, Darwen embarked on a mammoth 9 league games in just 20 days, winning 8 and drawing 1. This herculean achievement pushed the team into
third place and into the enviable position of a home tie in the play off semi-final and final. With a 2-1 win against Chadderton, Darwen set-up an home tie against 4th place Hanley Town in the first ever NWCFL play off final. What made the effort even more outstanding is that during the 20 day period Darwen played the league champions Atherton Collieries in the Reusch First Division Cup Final. It was to be a memorable night winning the cup with a fantastic 3 - 1 win against a very good side. In front of over 840 spectators; the NWCFL biggest crowd of the season for a league game Darwen produced a stunning performance to defeat Hanley Town 5 - 3 and win promotion to the Premier league. Not only did AFC Darwen do the double by wining promotion and division cup, other significant milestones where also achieved. No Darwen/AFC Darwen team had scored over 100 goals in a season since the NWCFL was formed in 1982, and two players scored 30 plus goals. The total record for the 2014/15 season is as follows: 22 wins, 8 draws and 8 defeats, goals scored 110, conceded 64. Ryan Steele scoring 41 and Paul Coote getting 30. The reserves also had success finishing 2nd in their first ever season in the East Lancashire Football League 2nd Division.

Ground Safety In the interest of spectator comfort and safety, the following conditions apply at the clubs Brookburn Road ground and must be observed at all times.
In case of fire or other emergency that requires the clubhouse or ground to be evacuated instructions will be given over the public address system, and we ask that you comply with those instructions immediately. The chanting of racist or obscene chanting is strictly forbidden. Glasses, bottles, gas canisters, knives, darts, tools, flag poles or any other articles likely to cause injury are not permitted into the ground. Alcohol may be purchased and consumed in the bar area only. Children are not allowed in the Club House unless accompanied by an adult. Encroachment onto the playing area is forbidden at all times. Standing is not allowed in front of the seated areas. All forms of transport on the clubs car park is at the owners’ risk.
The club reserves the right to remove any person from the ground who is in breach of these rules or whose presence is a source of danger or annoyance to others.
