Editorial & Welcome to… Ashton Athletic This is our final home game of 2015 and today we start the second half of our league fixtures with another 21 games to go including today. Half way through our third season in the NWCFL Premier Division we currently lie in eight position, the highest position we’ve been in at this stage of the season at this level. The last few weeks have seen many fixtures across the league postponed due to the relentless rain, but three successive November league wins against Cammell Laird away and then at home over Squires Gate and Congleton Town have significantly improved our position. Our league form over the past 11 games has been excellent and with 24 points from a possible 33 we’ve been steadily heading towards the top end of the table and wondering what might have been if we’d had a better return from the first 10 games. This season was always going to be a time of transition as new management and new players bedded in, and we’re grateful to Steve Settle and Steve Brockley for the work behind the scenes which is bearing fruit in our attractive and attacking style of play, and a steady increase in our average gate. Our visitors today are Ashton Athletic who rejoined the NWCFL from the Manchester League for the 2006-07 season, a few seasons before ourselves. Our two clubs never met in a competitive fixture during Manchester League days but we did have a couple of pre-season friendlies as we tested ourselves against Counties opposition whilst preparing to join the NWCFL for the 2012-13 season. Ashton Athletic is also a club very like ours, run by a committee of volunteers supporting the coaches and managers and with a thriving junior section and some 400 members. They also now run an academy based at the club on weekdays and this has enabled them to finance further ground improvements including an impressive new entrance and turnstile block completed in the past year. Going into today’s game we’ve each played 21 games and we’re just two points better off than Athletic, but still waiting for our first competitive victory over them. When we were promoted to the Premier Division 3 seasons ago there was nothing between the two teams in a 2-2 draw at Ashton and a 1-1 draw back here towards the end of that season. Ashton are a very consistent side who regularly maintain a top 10 position in the Premier Division and last season they won both fixtures by the same score of 2-0, although in the first game here in August 2013 the visiting keeper saved a penalty and kept the visitors in a game which WEST should have won. This season’s first game in mid September ended 3-0 to Ashton at Brocstedes Park when we were reduced to 10 men early in the second half when the score was 1-0 with little between us. Today will be another test of how far we’ve improved since then and we’ll need to be at our best to get our first victory over our visitors and keep improving our league position. We welcome everyone from Ashton and elsewhere to today’s game and trust you all have a safe journey home after the game. THANK YOU … To all the players for their commitment so far this season. Thanks you for supporting the game today and the club throughout the season. Don’t forget to hand in your token and claim your free festive drink today and thank you to today’s match sponsors Digital Media Team. UPCOMING FIXTURES Next Sunday, December 27th, away at Maine Road for the South Manchester derby, kick off 3pm. Our next home game is on Saturday 2nd January at 3.00pm when our visitors are Runcorn Town. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST – A HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND ALL THE BEST FOR 2016 IN THE MEANTIME … ENJOY TODAY’S GAME WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this afternoons league fixture against Ashton Athletic. Today represents the latest of our incentive fixtures with a free beer for fans and entertainment from our friends ‘the Dutch Uncles’ and NQB Choir. It’s the result of continued hard work from fans and the board aimed to attract new fans. I hope you all enjoy the day! I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Ashton’s management team, players, club officials and fans to Brookburn Road for what promises to be an entertaining game. We were well beaten by Ashton at their place in September and today will be a very tough for us. It seems to be an age since we last played. We come into today’s game on the back of 3 wins on the bounce and we have won 5 of the last 6 games in the league. This good run of form sees us enter today’s game above Ashton but a win for our visitors would reverse this. As such the game has added importance when we take into consideration our aim of finishing in the top 6 this season. I feel strongly that our performances and results in the next 6 games will really define our season. We have seen numerous times that on our day, our strongest 11 can match anyone in this league and with this in mind the next 6 games could all be bracketed as ‘winnable’ games.
The Christmas period is a brilliant time in football, lots of commentators, particularly in the professional game have stated that we would benefit from a Winter break but personally I love the packed festive period. The negative, of course, is the weather. And having had the game at Silsden called off a couple of Saturdays ago we will have to guard against ‘ring rustiness’ today. With today’s game being the last one before Christmas I’d like to take the opportunity to wish everybody connected to the club a very merry Christmas and extend my best wishes to all for the New Year. I’d also like to thank our loyal band of fanatics for their support this season. The lads really appreciate it and if we can continue to play the attacking football we have tried to play thus far this season then I hope we will steadily grow our fan base further! Thanks for the support and enjoy the game!

West 4 Congleton Town 3 ‌match report West made it three wins in a row with a dramatic and exciting win over Congleton Town. West started the brighter of the two teams and could have been ahead after three minutes when Nic Evangelinos got on the end of a low cross at the far post, he pulled the ball back but his shot was brilliantly blocked by Dominic Kurasik in the Congleton goal. The visitors first chance came on nine minutes when they were awarded a free kick for a trip at the edge of the area but the shot was curled just over the bar. On 11 minutes West went close again as Ash Woods nipped ahead of the Congleton goalkeeper onto a through pass but his shot was deflected onto the post and the rebound deflected wide for a corner. The deadlock was broken on 12 minutes when Evangelinos raced onto a pass over the top from Yahya Saeed and nonchalantly lobbed the onrushing Kurasik from the edge of the penalty area, a wonderful finish. From the kick off it was almost 2-0 as captain Mark Rogers found the Congleton goalkeeper off his line and attempted an audacious chip from 30 yards with the Bears goalkeeper pulling of a class fingertip save to deny West’s captain. West continued to dominate the first half and Ben Steer went close twice with great chances. First on 19 minutes he raced onto a one-onone and the young striker forced the visiting keeper into another excellent block. Then Steer should have made it two on 31 minutes when a wickedly whipped pass from Yahya from left back evaded both centre backs, Steer raced in down the right but his chipped shot missed the target. Congleton almost made West rue their missed chances on the stroke of half time as they fired over from 6 yards out but West were deserved of their first half lead. It took just four minutes for the visitors to level in the second half in which Congleton won a free kick on the half way much to the displeasure of the home bench. The free kick was launched to the far post and headed back across goal and headed in from a yard out by Lois Johnson.
www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk
However the teams were level for just four minutes as Callum Jones raced onto a ball down the right, he cut the ball inside to Woods who drilled his shot along the floor to Matty Kay who smashed it home from two yards out. Woods then had a great chance to make it 3-1 as the Congleton goalkeeper took too long to clear the ball as Woods closed him down blocked the clearance and pounced on the ball but his shot stuck in the mud on the line and the keeper was able to claw the ball away before Steer could tap in the rebound. A minute later it was 2-2 as Congleton pumped a long ball into the box as sub Declan Fletcher jumped highest and headed home. On the hour mark the game turned again as West made it 3-2 as a Matty Kay corner wasn’t cleared, he and Matt Eckersley combined down the left, the West forward earned himself a little space from a one-two and drilled his shot into the middle and it was deflected beyond the Congleton goalkeeper at the near post. That lead lasted just two minutes as Congleton launched it into the box again, and again Congleton jumped highest as Fletcher added his second heading in from a yard. The game was now end to end and West almost made it 4-3 on 65 minutes when they had a triple chance as sub Rick Gleave raced into the box and forced a low save from Kurasik after a low cut back with Matty Kay hitting the bar with the rebound from the edge of the area before a third shot was blocked for a corner. Five minutes later Kay went close again as Woods raced down the left and drilled a cross high to the far post and Kay could only head a difficult chance over from a yard. The winner came on 74 minutes as some West pressure finally tolled as Woods capped off a superb performance with an individual goal cutting inside from inside and curling a wonderful effort into the bottom left hand corner. Despite a late onslaught from Congleton West held firm to lift them up to 7th after the game. This has now changed due to fixture cancellations.

Football is important socially all over the world… In the past few weeks, several clubs in the North West Counties League, including West have been receiving some rather unusual attention; from no less an unusual source than an Indonesian sociology writer. Idham Pribadi, a 26 year old academic from Jakarta, Indonesia, is currently in the north of England conducting research for a study on traditional aspects of culture in urban areas of the West and has found that the North West Counties League is the perfect place to gather information. “Football is important socially all over the world. Even back home I watch my local club, Persitara Jakarta” Pribadi explained. “And of course, football's especially important to the English. But I have heard that the modern Premier League is somewhat consumerist, not really representative of the true football culture. So I wanted to visit a smaller, locally based league to get a better idea of traditional football culture.”
Having attended games at Chadderton, Runcorn Linnets, Widnes and Atherton LR, Pribadi was able to speak with supporters, players and volunteers as well as observing stadiums and facilities. But whilst Pribadi did not find the time to visit Brookburn Road, our club has not escaped his notice. “I collected data on West Didsbury & Chorlton's marketing and self-promotion, based on their social media content,” said Pribadi. “You can learn about the local population from such a thing actually, as the posts show something about what is appealing to the average English football fan. Although this is only a small part of the research I am carrying out, this has been a most intriguing experience. I have met some interesting people and seen some interesting things and next time I am in England, I will hopefully see another game or two!”

Looking back our feature on Football History No 16 We all know about the exploits of the giants that are Manchester United and Manchester City. Across the country, and even the world, iconic places and people like Old Trafford, Maine Road, Bert Trautman and George Best are regularly spoken of with fondness and reverence. But Manchester has seen a great many more interesting pieces of footballing history. Here, we explore some of the lesser known aspects of Manchester's rich tapestry of football history.
Clive Moyo-Modise Since football began, there have been a huge number of vastly overrated players getting all the plaudits and not exactly backing it up on the field. Clive Moyo-Modise may not be the most famous example of such a player, but within Manchester football circles, he surely goes down as one of the most spectacular failures in recent years. Born in London to South African parents, Moyo-Modise started his career in the youth team of League side Rochdale AFC, and with his pace and flair was soon given a place in the first team. After two dozen or so appearances for the Dale, the enigmatic striker decamped to South Africa, where he signed for top flight club Bidvest Wits. This turned out to be the best move of Moy-Modise's career. As well as playing well for his club side, he saw game time for South Africa Under 23s, and even earned himself a call up to the senior squad, although he failed to actually earn a full international cap. Soon, Clive was on the move again, returning to England, complete with a promotional video of himself performing step-overs and turns set to club music. Soon, he had earned himself a contract at Conference Premier club Altrincham, and it was here that his career took a turn for the worse. He made only 4 appearances in total for the Robins, most of
them hopelessly bad, and he became notorious for being criticised by his team mates for his apparent lack of any ability or work rate. Altrincham fans were baffled that this internationally recognised player was proving to be so thoroughly inadequate, and so it appeared were the management as only a month after signing, Clive's contract was cancelled by mutual consent. But Altrincham had not seen the last of the irrepressible Clive. Supporters were flabbergasted when Moyo-Modise was included in the squad for the first friendly of the following season against Woodley Sports. It did not go well. Only 5 minutes after coming on as a second half substitute, Moyo-Modise made something of a bad challenge. So bad in fact, that it caught an opposition in such a way as to break his leg. The final straw came a week later in a friendly against Rhyl when Clive managed to miss a chance from 3 yards out when faced with an open net. Clive subsequently turned out for a few months for Ashton United before he decided to, as then Ashton manager Danny Johnson would later put it “disappear off the face of the earth. His abrupt vanishing act was probably, as far as the non league football community was concerned, for the best.

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC
History of Ashton Athletic Ashton Athletic Football Club was founded in 1968 and playing in the Wigan Sunday League - winning every Division in consecutive seasons and many cup competitions before switching to the Warrington League on Saturdays where similar success was sustained. The Club developed Brocstedes Park and was admitted to the Lancashire Combination, before becoming a founder member of the North West Counties League when the Combination merged with the Cheshire league in 1982. Unfortunately financial constraints prevented the required ground improvements to be completed, and the Club was relegated into the Manchester league Division One in 1986. The drop of two leagues resulted in the majority of the playing staff moving to other clubs and for numerous years the club endeavored to re-build. Players came and went, lacking the Club loyalty that had brought success to the Club in the 1970`s and early 80`s until the Committee embraced an ambitious youth development policy in 1999. The Club is now at the end of a ten-year development plan to enhance its recreational facilities and expand the Club, in particular its junior section. Eight years ago the Club had two teams, 50 members, one mediocre pitch with dilapidated clubhouse and changing rooms. Since then the Club members have worked tirelessly to progress the Club within its means, and with some help from external grant sources. Assistance from the Football foundation, Awards for All programme, and Wigan Council enabled a series of improvements to be completed. The main pitch was re-drained, a second pitch acquired/improved, new changing rooms and Clubhouse built, disabled access provided and other improvements made to the grounds. More recently the ground has been brought up to the necessary Ground Grading for re-entry
www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk
into the NWCFL, in time for the start of the 2006/7 season and further inprovements have provided additional seating. The 2008/2009 season also sees a further progression of the Club, having been promoted to the Premier Division of the North West Counties League. We will again take to the national stage, having been accepted in the FA Cup competition after last season`s debut in the FA Vase which proved very lucrative for the Club, progressing through 3 stages and beating 2 teams from higher leagues in the process. Last season also saw cup success for the Club retaining the Atherton Charity Cup at the end of the season. A new vision for the Club is under discussion to further develop the Club and these will include plans for improvements to the access road, new junior changing rooms, and additional playing fields for the junior section and a proposed girls/Ladies section. The main ground is also scheduled for enhancement works with additional covered spectator areas. The Club is a voluntary organisation run by a Committee of 14 alongside approximately 25 coaches and managers. Any money raised by the Club has been ploughed back into improving the facilities and developing the youth section. The Club now has a total membership of more than 400. We have 9 junior teams consisting of approximately 160 children who take advantage of the improvement of our now excellent facilities, whilst hundreds of children and adults from opposition teams also benefit from the continually improving facilities. In addition to the 2 open age teams occasional run outs for the veteran`s team, providing a further 20 members, the highlight being the now annual Challenge match against the Past Players of Wigan Athletic FC. The Club is keen to maintain the pace of development of the club and future plans will enable increased activity at the Club, additional Junior teams and a much safer and secure environment in particular for spectators and Children. The Club is also committed and positively working towards an application to the FA for Charter Standard, and an intensive Coach Education Programme is well under way.
