6th April 2013 – Atherton LR

This afternoon we welcome back the players, officials and supporters of Atherton Laburnum Rovers as we lock horns for the third meeting between the two sides this season. Atherton LR inflicted our heaviest defeat of the season when we travelled there for our away league fixture when we took an early lead only to turn round 1-4 down at the interval. A spirited second half saw us hit the woodwork four times and learn some hard lessons, in time for us to turn the tables in the cup when we won 2-0 back here at Brookburn Road. Since then LR have had an up and down season but they have a young side with plenty of promise and on their day they are capable of causing problems for anyone. This was evidenced by their own excellent away win at league leaders Formby in the Divisional Cup game at the turn of the year. They have also had a couple of very well attended and close contests against their nearest neighbours Atherton Collieries in the so called ‘Flat Cap derby’ with the first ending 1-1 and the second, played on Tuesday evening this week ended with a narrow 0-1 home defeat. We will expect another stern test today. THEN THERE WERE FOUR … After this afternoon we have 4 league games remaining, starting on the road again next Wednesday evening with a trip down to Eccleshall in Staffordshire. This will put even more stress on our playing resources as we near the end of a pretty exhausting couple of months. Hard on the heels of the record setting home victory over Leek, our 3-0 win over Daisy Hill was competent and effective with the game more or less settled by the interval. This gave us a chance to rest Tommy Walsh and Lee Malkin early in the second half in readiness for the away game on Easter Monday. What followed was a really competitive game at Rochdale Town on a hard uneven surface with a swirling wind making conditions difficult for both sets of players. We returned with a 2-1 away win as the team again showed great team spirit and commitment as we fought back from a 0-1 half time deficit to nick all 3 points courtesy of another Lee Malkin strike in the closing stages. This was definitely not one for the connoisseur of the beautiful game but 3 moments of rare quality saw 3 good goals in between a lot of misplaced passes and long ball football from the home side. The results elsewhere over the past couple of weeks have seen us move up to 3rd place in the league and although others have games in hand we have the points in the bag and we’ll just have to wait and see where we are at the end of the league programme. Hopefully it will be enough to guarantee us a place in the FA Cup next season and if we can secure that with a top 4 finish we will have surpassed our pre-season expectations of consolidation in our first season in the NWCFL. AND FINALLY … Next Saturday we are at home again with a visit from Irlam, one of our nearest neighbours in Division 1, as we complete our programme of home games with the game postponed from late January. We will be producing our final match programme this season for that game so come down early to ensure your copy. Thanks you for your support in buying the programme for each home game – we have sold out on many occasions and we are really grateful to all our supporters who have been so regular in buying a programme each week. If you have any suggestions as to how we might improve it for next season or would like to see any additional features then please let us have your ideas. GOING AWAY Thank you to the core of travelling supporters who made the trip to Rochdale on Easter Monday afternoon – it was good to hear the cheer when the winner went in! If you want to travel to ECCLESHALL next Wednesday evening then please have a word with Rob at this afternoon’s game. WE HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL FOR OUR FINAL HOME GAME NEXT WEEK – IN THE MEANTIME ENJOY THE GAME TODAY. Rob Turley Thanks to Mike Fryer for providing photos we use on the web and in the programme, on the front cover Mike has captured a great shot of action man Tommy Walsh.

View from the Dugout Hello and welcome to today’s game against Atherton LR. We’ve had another busy week with games at home against Daisy Hill and away to Rochdale Town pleasingly we recorded wins in both games. After the goal bonanza against Leek CSOB we saw a solid performance against Daisy Hill, where 3 first half goals put us in control of the game, in the second half we made three changes with Mondays game in mind, and ran out comfortable winners. Then it was back on the road to take on a Rochdale Town team who have been in a good run of form themselves. We were missing several key players and were forced to ask players to play out of position as well as asking others to step up from the 2nd XI. It’s fair to say that we were probably running on fumes towards the end but credit to the players who refused to accept a point and their hard work was paid off thanks to a late winner. I would like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Atherton LR to today’s game. Andy Nelson and Steve Eckersley

Our visitors‌ Atherton LR Laburnum Rovers were founded in 1956 by Joe Riley as an under 14`s side and after a difficult first season in the local Briarcroft Junior League, they went on to enjoy much success in League and Cup competitions. Joe was persuaded to carry on into Senior football and after a brief spell in the Leigh League the club joined the Bolton Combination. More success followed, but the ground at Hag Fold prevented further progress so a farmers field was found and despite footpath criss-crossing and duck ponds either side, hard work by everyone at the club turned this unpromising field into a football pitch. In 1966 the club moved into its new ground and were able to take their place in Division One of the Combination. Jack Crilly succeeded Joe as Chairman and worked tirelessly for the club, supervising the erection of new changing rooms (an improvement on the old air raid shelters they had been using) and a small social club. Jack died suddenly in 1980 and as a tribute to the work he did the ground was renamed from Greendale to Crilly Park. In the summer of 1980 the club joined the non-league pyramid when their application to join the Cheshire County League was successful. A stipulation of the League was that the towns name had to be in the clubs title, so links with the past were retained with the new name of Atherton Laburnum Rovers. In 1982 the club became founder members of the North West Counties League, being placed in division two until the league was reorganised in 1987 when ongoing ground improvements saw them placed in division one. 1989 saw floodlights erected and the club enter the FA Cup for the first time, while in 1991 the changing rooms and clubhouse were completely rebuilt. Towards the end of 1990/91 season Dave Morris took over as team manager and it was the start of the best period in the clubs history. In 1992/93 the club won the League title with 106 points from 42 games and also won the League Championship Trophy. Promotion to the Unibond League was denied them because of grading requirements, but undaunted the club repeated their double the following season as well as reaching the semi-finals of the FA Vase. This time the club was promoted to the Unibond League. Two good seasons saw steady progress, but then financial troubles struck and the club was relegated for the first time in its history. Three seasons of struggle back in the North West Counties League culminated with the relegation to Division Two. However, the appointment of Alan Lord as manager saw a remarkable turnaround in form and nine successive victories helped the club win back promotion to Division One at the first attempt. In November 2002 Tom Foster and Dennis Haslem took over as managers after having to rebuild the team from scratch, they secured Division One football for another season. Dennis moved on in the summer and Ian Street joined the club. A period of stability and success followed but at the end of 2004/05 season Foster and Street left the club to be replaced by Mike Lester and Darren Ford, They set about building a new squad. The most successful period came in spring 2007 under Roy Sweeney when the club moved away from the relegation zone after doubling its points total from 21 to 42 in the final two months of the season. Sweeney resigned in December 2007, with Malcolm Anderton taking temporary charge for four months until ex-LR player and Leigh RMI manager Stuart Humphreys was brought in to ensure the club retained its top division status and it was fortunate that 21st place was enough. With changes elsewhere in the pyramid system meaning LR avoided relegation at the end of 07/08 season, the club brought in Dave Hughes as the new manager with a brief to keep the team in the Premier Division while the club was reorganised behind the scenes. Hughes brought in a very experienced coaching team and set about building a squad which has proved very successful. The season ended with one of the highest league placings for several years, victory in the Goldline Trophy and another Reebok appearance in the Hospital Cup final. This season the side had a promising opening to the campaign recording another FA Cup giant-killing before injuries took a severe toll, with the team battling in the relegation dogfight. Victory once again in the Goldline Trophy Final gave the team enough belief to collect the points they needed to stay in the Premier Division. Dave Hughes resigned as manager at the beginning of September 2010 and the position was immediately offered to the Head Coach Glenn Moses to ensure stability within the team. Since Moses took over he has led the club to its third Goldline Final in three years and our highest mid-season points tally for the past few seasons.

First team reports…Tuesday 26th March: WEST 8

Leek CSOB 2

The opening stages saw West out of the blocks fastest and ahead after 4 minutes when Gareth Thomas hit a crisp low drive from the right hand edge of the area across the keeper and inside the post. Leek were level a few minutes later when some ‘after you’ defending allowed the winger to escape and the resultant tackle from behind brought the equaliser from the penalty spot and a caution for Callum Jones. It was fairly even for the next 15 minutes But West regained the lead after 24 minutes when Tommy Walsh was on hand to turn home a free kick from the left wing. We were beginning to play with great fluency and tempo and the contest was more or less over by half time as West added another 3 goals in 6 minutes. On 39 minutes Lee Malkin was given the freedom of the 6 yard box to fire home a Thomas corner and a minute later Callum Jones raced past the full back who decided to nudge him in the back. The assistant flagged immediately and Aston slotted the penalty. Leek were all over the place and Tommy notched another in the last minute of the first half to ensure a 5-1 half time advantage. The hardy band of spectators who emerged from the lounge for the second half were rewarded with one of the goals of the season when, after 50 minutes, Thomas picked up the ball 25 yards out and fired a superb drive past a bemused keeper into the top left corner to make it 6-1. West then made a couple of changes with Baldwin Willis replacing Malkin and Summers on for Thomas but the flowing football continued. There were several near misses before goal number 7 arrived in the 77th minute as Scott Jones got to the goal line before chipping a great cross over the keeper across the face of goal where brother Callum Jones stooped to bury a close range header. Two minutes later and Woody was on hand to fire home number 8. Steve Settle then came on for Callum Schofield and tried his best to set up a tap in for Tommy’s hat trick only for the ball to hit the defender and go behind for a corner. Five minutes from time Leek got a consolation effort when Pauley turned home a free kick from 6 yards and then Ben Simpson had to be alert to parry a header from 6 yards out to deny Leek a third. At the other end Tre Baldwin and Lewis Schofield both went close in the final minutes and at the end West were good value for the 8-2 result.

Saturday 30th March: WEST 3 Daisy Hill 0 West got off to a flying start in this game coming hard on the heels of the midweek victory over Leek, aided by a penalty after 3 minutes when Tommy Walsh surged through the middle only to be felled by the visiting keeper. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Mike Aston stepped up to calmly wrestle the ball from Gareth Thomas grip before sending the keeper the wrong way for a 1-0 lead. It was 10 minutes before Daisy Hill managed an attempt at goal when a free kick was partially cleared only for the follow up effort to be fired well wide. We were causing the visitors defence problems on both flanks and after 18 minutes Tommy Walsh was unlucky not to connect with a Callum Jones cross from a great run down the right wing. On 26 minutes it was that man Malkin on target again but this time the goal was made by Lewis Schofield who beat two men on his run down the right touchline before cutting the ball across the 6 yard box where Malkin was waiting to bring the ball under control and crash home a second from close range. Just before the break Daisy Hill had a good claim for a penalty waved away when Potts fell headlong inside the area where the ball then hit his hand before being cleared. As West pushed forward in reply Tommy Walsh was again taken out by the keeper just outside the area resulting in a yellow card and direct free kick. Lewis Schofield rifled home a low strike to make it 3-0 at the interval and a long way back for the visitors. There was no let up in tempo at the second half started and Walsh went close with a first time effort which was just wide from a Malkin run and cross and on 48 minutes Aston put a header from a corner just the wrong side of the post. The game then became a bit dull as West seemed content to keep possession and Daisy Hill had little idea on how to unpick the home defence. After 57 minutes Ben Simpson showed his consistency and concentration when diving full length to clutch and hold a decent effort from 20 yards and then West made some changes with Tre Baldwin Willis, Danny Summers and Lee Shillito replacing Tommy Walsh, Lee Malkin and Callum Schofield. Aston had another decent header from a corner saved after 72 minutes and then Lee Shillito fired a great low ball across the face of goal which found Callum Jones whose effort was smothered by the keeper. With 10 minutes left Dave Kilbride tried his luck with a thumping left foot effort which the startled keeper helped round the post for a corner. Daisy Hill responded with two late efforts with the first hitting the post on 81 minutes and then 3 minutes from the end Simpson again dived full length to make a great stop and show us all that he was still concentrating. Another clean sheet, a comfortable 3-0 win and another 3 points which pushed us further up the table as Darwen lost for the second time in 4 days.

Monday 1st April: Rochdale Town 1 WEST 2 This was not a great game to say the least with little football of note to trouble the travelling match reporter or excite the spectators huddled in the main stand in an unsuccessful attempt to keep warm. The early stages saw a couple of half chances at either end with Malkin adjudged offside after 10 minutes and a couple of minutes later a great cross from the left wing miscued by a Rochdale forward. After 18 minutes Rochdale had another chance when a free header was directed straight at Ben Simpson and then on 20 minutes the home side went ahead when the No9 brought the ball under control to fire hard and low from 18 yards just inside the far post. West had an immediate chance to reply with a 21st minute corner which was scrambled clear. The game was very scrappy with little quality from either side and West did well to keep the deficit to 1-0 at half time defending up the slope and against the swirling wind. The second half saw better from West with Tommy Walsh going close after 51 minutes when his shot from a Lewis Schofield cross hit the side netting. This gave West some encouragement and 4 minutes later got their reward. Tre Baldwin fought for and won the ball on half way on the right before playing the ball inside to Lee Malkin who darted forward to dissect the defence with a perfect return pass for Tre to speed into the area and crack home a great equaliser. The game became scrappy once again and there was little to choose between the sides as West kept trying to play on the ground in contract to Rochdale who persisted with a long ball high down the middle. Potts, Kilbride and Callum Schofield dealt with virtually everything thrown at them which was testament to their character given all were carrying injuries by this stage. The sunshine broke through and as everyone began to feel a little warmer West at last seemed to get going. A quick free kick by Dave Kilbride on 78 minutes almost brought reward in finding Danny Summers but his onward header was sent wide by the advancing Callum Jones. Lee Malkin then had a typical cross field run only to scuff his shot but that was to prove a temporary reprieve for Rochdale when, on 86 minutes, Lee was at it again to crack home the winner after good work by Lewis Schofield. That was his 10th goal in 8 successive league games and resulted in West securing all 3 points from a position that didn’t look very likely at the break. Full credit to the squad including Danny Iredale, Bobby Ashcroft and Joshua Chishambo all promoted from the reserves in the absence of several regulars on holiday or injured. Danny and Bobby saw action in the closing stages and used their experience to help the team see out the game and collect all 3 points.

Reserve team report… Silsden 1 WEST Res 1 Easter Saturday saw West Reserves take the long journey to Silsden. The squad was a little depleted due to injuries and holidays, however the the lads drafted in took their chance extremely well and rose to the occasion. West started the game unusually under pressure from the home team and rode the storm well. Mike Kennedy and Nathan Wakelam playing exceptionally well at centre backs. Silsden had much of the first half with the exception of a superb free kick from Jon Chrimes, playing his first game in over four months, when he hit the bar with the Silsden keeper stranded. West went in at half time with the score 0-0. The second half started much better with Landon Clarke who was making only his second reserve game of the season getting much more of the ball which allowed West to create more chances and with 16 year old, Zeeshan Hussain making his debut at left back started to push more into midfield causing Silseden problems on more than one occasion. West opened the scoring from a great goal from Gary Lilley who struck the ball from the edge of the box placing the ball past the out stretch Silsden keeper. Unfortunately West could not hold onto their lead and within 10 minutes Silsden equalised from a ball played into the box which was scrambled over the line. West continued to push forward looking for the winner but an injury to keeper Conrad Betton forced Jon Chrimes to replace Conrad in goal thus curbing our forward momentum. The score finished up 1-1 but West can take heart from a very good battling performance.

Last week Match Sponsor… Glyn Meacher We are grateful to Glyn who sponsored the last home game against Daisy Hill. Glyn has been involved with West Didsbury and Chorlton AFC for well over 20 years as a player, Committee member, Secretary, Vice Chair and now following Brian Cripps retirement as Chairman.

West Treasurer in jury at Tyrone’s trial… Club Treasurer Dave Cooper made a few appearances in Coronation Street at the end of March, when he was a juror in Tyrone’s trial. “I’ve been ‘acting’ now for about five years”, he said. “I’ve done most of the local soaps – Emmerdale, Corrie, Hollyoaks, and a lot of the locally based drama series like Scott & Bailey, Shameless, Waterloo Road, Leaving, Mrs Biggs, The Village etc “I’ve done a few adverts as well, and my first job was actually an advert filmed at Belle Vue race track in Manchester, and for some reason I was featured quite prominently which was a nice start. I also did a photo shoot for M&S (or modelling as I prefer to call it). “This is the third time I’ve been in Coronation Street. The first time I was in a crowd at a funeral for a character played by Andrew Sachs, who was in Fawlty Towers, and I was in a scene in Roy’s Rolls cafe, where I was sitting for about three hours eating the same currant bun. “A few weeks ago we got in stocks of West Didsbury & Chorlton club ties, and as I was asked to be ‘the smart one on the jury’ I was asked to bring suit and ties. I made sure that I took my club tie with me and wore it during the filming of the scenes”. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

WHAT’S OUR

STORY?

Newly elected North West Counties League side West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury. West first played in the Manchester Alliance League until the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918). After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as the League did not permit association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A and stayed in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in that league until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. Many of the current committee were players in that league. The club played at Christie Playing Fields from before 1914 but had to relocate when given notice to quit by the Playing Fields Society in the mid 80’s when that body decided to sell the land for commercial gain. After several years nomadic existence the club kicked off the 1997-98 season at their splendid new home at The Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road, and began to develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold and secured the new facilities via a Lottery grant, new sponsors and fundraising, but without a penny of help from the Playing Fields Society proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect our new location in Chorlton and we were elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 Season West won Manchester League silverware for the first time, lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final.

With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, who had previously managed at Leigh RMI, the 2009/10 season was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield, (the third consecutive year we have been in the final) and finishing runners-up in the league. The second team won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic points total (65 points out of 72 possible). This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in the history of the Manchester League dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The clubs ‘A’ team finished and the Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club in every sense. In recent seasons several players who started at West have been signed by top non league clubs, but such is the spirit of the club that many players return to what they see as a family club. The club now looks forward to fulfilling its ambition to play at the highest possible level it can whilst continuing to be run as a community club and transition to the NWCFL. The ground and facilities have been further improved and floodlights erected to meet grading requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. The club was duly elected to the NWCFL at the AGM on 16th June 2012.
