24th November 2012 – Atherton LR
It’s back to cup action today with our first fixture in the second round of the NWCFL First Division Trophy competition, which is the last 16. Our visitors Atherton Laburnum Rovers were the surprise package in the last round as they defeated highly fancied Formby on their own ground 2-1 and raise a few eyebrows as part of their recent resurgence after a poor start to the season. Since then Rovers have begun to steadily climb the table and we know from our previous encounter that we will face a very competitive and energetic young side today. We will need to be at our best to progress but we have begun to show more consistency in recent weeks and extended that to our away form last weekend when we gained all 3 points from our away trip to Daisy Hill. Last weekend also saw some of this season’s opponents in FA Vase action and our congratulations go to Premier Division Norton United, [who we beat 3-1 in the NWC League Challenge Trophy], who won away at Deeping Rangers to progress to the 3rd round of the Vase. Other Counties teams still in that competition are Wigan Robin Park who won away at Bedlington Terriers, Runcorn Town who beat Formby 2-1 after the visitors were reduced to 10 men when leading 1-0, Winsford United defeated Morpeth Town 1-0 and Barnoldswick beat Armthorpe 5-2 meaning the League has 4 representatives remaining in the FA Vase this season. There were several league games postponed but the game at Daisy Hill went ahead on a pitch which became more difficult as game progressed. Our overall play was solid enough after a slow start and we ran out deserved winners although we again left it late to score the decisive goal. That result moved us up the table a couple of places to a heady 4th place with 2 further away games remaining before the half way mark of the league programme. Other sides have games in hand but we can look forward to the majority of our games at home next year with only 6 away fixtures remaining after our December trips to Barrow and Eccleshall. AWAY TRAVEL We will be running a coach to the away game in Barrow on Saturday 8th December and Eccleshall on Saturday 22nd December, with room for supporters wishing to travel to either or both of these games. We will be leaving Brookburn Road from outside the school around 11am on Sat 8th and 11.45am on Sat 22nd so if you are interested in making the trip please speak to Rob who will book you a seat. CLUB DEVELOPMENT – AN INTERNATIONAL DIMENSION We mentioned in the last programme our plans to proceed with development of additional grass pitches adjoin the club and included a plan of the proposals. Along with this initiative, we have also had some external independent advice from a group of MBA students from Manchester Business School who have been looking at our activities as a not for profit community club and giving us some insight on how we might make the club more sustainable for the long term. The 5 students were from India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan and the USA, and over the past 3 months this team has undertaken a survey of members, attended a Committee meeting as observers, visited the club on match days and attended the Community bonfire event. We had an initial presentation from the students last week at the Business School and the group are now finalising their report which should be with us before Christmas. We will then be discussing their recommendations at Committee, deciding on how best and when to implement these and sharing these with you. We are very grateful to MBS for taking us on as a ‘not for profit’ clients this year and to the student team for their incisive thinking and clear advice. FESTIVE FIXTURES The next 1st team home game is on 15th December v Cheadle Town when we will be putting on some festive food in the clubhouse, and on Boxing Day we are at home to Leek CSOB, kick off 3pm before ending the year with another home game against Irlam, again at 3pm. In the meantime enjoy the clubhouse hospitality and refreshments and we look forward to another entertaining game today.

View from the Dugout How a week changes things! You may have noticed…the same subtitle as in the last programme!! This time it worked the other way, we commented in our last notes on the massive disappointment from beating Norton United one week then losing to Northwich Villa the next. So we entered our last home game against Abbey Hey very aware we were playing a team that was full of confidence after a great start to their season, we impressed on the lads in training this is where we kick on from, we needed 100% across the park, patience and determination, well we weren’t disappointed! The team was excellent matching Abbey Hey, competing for every ball, pressing well and staying positive even when we went a goal down, in fact from then on we really controlled the game and ran out deserved winners, with a bit more accuracy in front of goal the winning margin would have been greater. A great team effort. So we were on the road again last Saturday, taking the M61 to Daisy Hill… after heavy overnight rain the pitch was very heavy and cut up fairly quickly, this was to restrict a free flowing game, but credit to the lads we won by digging in and battling hard, although there were chances at both ends we were generally on the front foot taking the game to Daisy Hill and deservedly took the points with a late winner. All in all two important results showing we can play it around well and dig in when needed, we look forward to today’s cup game and hope you enjoy the game. Andy Nelson and Steve Eckersley

Ground Safety In the interest of spectator comfort and safety, the following conditions apply at the clubs Brookburn Road ground and must be observed at all times.
In case of fire or other emergency that requires the clubhouse or ground to be evacuated instructions will be given over the public address system, and we ask that you comply with those instructions immediately.
The chanting of racist or obscene chanting is strictly forbidden.
Glasses, bottles, gas canisters, knives, darts, tools, flag poles or any other articles likely to cause injury are not permitted into the ground.
Alcohol may be purchased and consumed in the bar area only.
Children are not allowed in the Club House unless accompanied by an adult. Encroachment onto the playing area is forbidden at all times.
Standing is not allowed in front of the seated areas.
All forms of transport on the clubs car park is at the owners’ risk.

Our visitors‌ Atherton LR Laburnum Rovers were founded in 1956 by Joe Riley as an under 14’s side in the local Briarcroft Junior League, they went on to enjoy much success in League and Cup competitions before moving into senior football. After a brief spell in the Leigh League the club joined the Bolton Combination. More success followed, but the ground at Hag Fold prevented further progress so a farmers field was found and after much hard work by everyone at the club turned this unpromising field into a football pitch. In 1966 the club moved into its new ground and were able to take their place in Division One of the Combination. Jack Crilly succeeded Joe as Chairman and worked tirelessly for the club, supervising the erection of new changing rooms (an improvement on the old air raid shelters they had been using) and a small social club. Jack died suddenly in 1980 and as a tribute to the work he did the ground was renamed from Greendale to Crilly Park. In the summer of 1980 the club joined the non-league pyramid when their application to join the Cheshire County League was successful. A stipulation of the League was that the towns name had to be in the clubs title, so links with the past were retained with the new name of Atherton Laburnum Rovers. In 1982 the club became founder members of the North West Counties League, being placed in division two until the league was reorganised in 1987 when ongoing ground improvements saw them placed in division one. 1989 saw floodlights erected and the club enter the FA Cup for the first time, while in 1991 the changing rooms and clubhouse were completely rebuilt. Towards the end of 1990/91 season Dave Morris took over as team manager and it was the start of the best period in the clubs history. In 1992/93 the club won the League title with 106 points from 42 games and also won the League Championship Trophy. Promotion to the Unibond League was denied them because of grading requirements, but undaunted the club repeated their double the following season as well as reaching the semifinals of the FA Vase. This time the club was promoted to the Unibond League. Two good seasons saw steady progress, but then financial troubles struck and the club was relegated for the first time in its history. Three seasons of struggle back in the North West Counties League culminated with the relegation to Division Two. However, the appointment of Alan Lord as manager saw a remarkable turnaround in form and nine successive victories helped the club win back promotion to Division One at the first attempt. In November 2002 Tom Foster and Dennis Haslem took over as managers after having to rebuild the team from scratch, they secured Division One football for another season. Dennis moved on in the summer and Ian Street joined the club. A period of stability and success followed but at the end of 2004/05 season Foster and Street left the club to be replaced by Mike Lester and Darren Ford, They set about building a new squad but, in February 2006, Lester and Ford resigned sparking a difficult time for the club on the pitch with no less than six managers at the helm over the next two years. The most successful period came in spring 2007 under Roy Sweeney when the club moved away from the relegation zone after doubling its points total from 21 to 42 in the final two months of the season. Sweeney resigned in December 2007, with Malcolm Anderton taking temporary charge for four months until ex-LR player and Leigh RMI manager Stuart Humphreys was brought in to ensure the club retained st its top division status and it was fortunate that 21 place was enough. With changes elsewhere in the pyramid system meaning LR avoided relegation at the end of 07/08 season, the club brought in Dave Hughes as the new manager with a brief to keep the team in the Premier Division while the club was reorganised behind the scenes. Hughes brought in a very experienced coaching team and set about building a squad which has proved very successful. The season ended with one of the highest league placings for several years, victory in the Goldline Trophy and another Reebok appearance in the Hospital Cup final. This season the side had a promising opening to the campaign recording another FA Cup giant-killing before injuries took a severe toll, with the team battling in the relegation dogfight. Victory once again in the Goldline Trophy Final gave the team enough belief to collect the points they needed to stay in the Premier Division. Dave Hughes resigned as manager at the beginning of September 2010 and the position was immediately offered to the Head Coach Glenn Moses to ensure stability within the team. Since Moses took over he has led the club to its third Goldline Final in three years and our highest mid-season points tally for the past few seasons. Moses resigned at the end of the 2010/11 season, so Phil Priestly was appointed Manager he is no stranger to Atherton LR having previously played for them. Towards the end of the 2011/12 season it was inevitable that LR would be starting the following season in the First Division after relegation with the fewest points.

First team match reports… Saturday 10th November: WEST 2 Abbey Hey 1 West turned in a gutsy performance to recover from a goal down to beat pace setters Abbey Hey in one of the best games seen at Brookburn Road this season. The opening stages were pretty cagey as each team probed to find a weakness and after 13 minutes Danny Summers chased down a back pass and the clearance from the Abbey Hey keeper rebounded across the face of an open goal with no-one on hand to apply the finishing touch. Abbey Hey responded with a swift counter attack when Pilkington got the better of the home defence but rolled his shot just wide. This stung West into raising the tempo and Tre Baldwin Willis forced a full length save before the keeper misjudged a Schofield cross and was saved from embarrassment by a clearance off the line. West were playing with confidence and easily matching the visitors but after 32 minutes nearly paid the price for a last ditch tackle when the resultant free kick saw the ball graze the top of the bar on its way over. As the interval approached Tre again went close from a free kick and at the pavilion end another Abbey Hey counter attack saw the final effort go well wide. The opening 10 minutes of the second period were again pretty even with the best chance falling to the visitors No2 who shot wide from 6 yards after a good run and cross. The response was a Callum Jones effort cleared for a throw in before Abbey Hey went ahead on 61 minutes. West were guilty of over playing in the right back area and when possession was lost a swift series of passes across the area found Pilkington in space to drive home with his right foot and put the visitors 1-0 ahead. Despite the setback West buckled down to get back in the game and after 67 minutes Tre Baldwin Willis broke clear on the right flank to cut in and cross low along the 6 yard line where Lewis Schofield saw his first time effort roll agonisingly wide. Three minutes later two successive efforts appeared to be handled in the area but the referee waved away West appeals and Tre shot over the bar. Twenty minutes left and Andy Nelson rang the changes with Callum Schofield coming on for the flu ridden Kilbride and Tommy Walsh replacing Lee Shillito. Five minutes later and West were deservedly level when the keeper misjudged the flight of the ball and Callum Schofield was on hand to force the ball home on the goal line. The momentum was now with West and after 78 minutes Tommy Walsh was very unlucky when he turned his man only to shoot narrowly wide from an acute angle. Le Malkin then came on for Tre and in the last 5 minutes the Abbey Hey goal was under a relentless and constant siege as West pushed for the winner. The notes indicate the incessant pressure…
85 mins. – Tommy Walsh crashed a shot against the bar from 15 yards; 86 mins. – A Lewis Schofield corner flew across the face of goal 3 yards out; 87 mins. – Danny Summers turned and shot narrowly wide from 12 yards; 88 mins. – Tommy Walsh again just wide from close range; 88 mins. – Lee Malkin shot wide of the right hand post; 90 mins. – Another corner was partially cleared but when the ball was played back into the goalmouth Mark Woodcock was on hand to at last give West the goal their play had deserved and secure all 3 points. The response from a very creditable and lively home crowd was worth the wait.
Saturday 17th November: Daisy Hill 0 WEST 1 West got back to winning ways to record another important away win and climb to 4th in the league table with a late goal against a stubborn Daisy Hill team on what became a difficult surface after heavy overnight rain. The opening exchanges during the first 15 minutes saw chances at either end with an early Tre Baldwin Willis effort from a corner kicked off the line quickly followed by a good one on one save by Ben Simpson. West again had a chance when Callum Jones was then played in only to see his effort again cleared off the line before the pitch took its first casualty of the afternoon as the home no3 pulled up with a hamstring problem as he lost his footing. This early break for a substitution saw a lapse in concentration in the West defence and Daisy Hill were unlucky when a quick spin and shot on the turn Continued…

went narrowly wide. After this initial flurry from the home side West began to keep possession much better and on 28 minutes Tre broke clear down the left wing checked and turned the ball inside to the advancing Callum Jones whose first time effort flashed just wide. West were not having much joy with some close offside decisions and after 33 minutes Mark Woodcock released Danny Summers who broke clear and crashed a drive over the home keeper only for the assistant to rule offside. A case of mistaken identity and some general frustration as we repeatedly failed to avoid getting caught offside in the closing stages of the first half. In the 47th minute Tre was again unlucky and only just wide from a Mike Aston throw. Daisy Hill responded by immediately resuming a route one approach which saw their skipper Xugreb, who had been a handful all afternoon, turn and fire past the far post. After an hour Lee Malkin came on fro Tre and on 63 minutes Lee Shillito was unlucky with a first time effort just wide. This was followed by a very poor decision when Lee Malkin ran from behind and between two home defenders only for the assistant to raise a flag as he honed in on goal. West were undeterred and were making headway down both flanks as we stretched the play and Daisy Hill defence, where full back Richard Smith was excelling and overworked. Callum Jones and Lee Malkin combined to tee up Lewis Schofield whose rising drive went just over whilst after 75 minutes Ben Simpson again showed his great concentration and positional sense to deny Daisy Hill after a misplaced header left their forward in the clear. With 5 minutes remaining Paul Lewis joined the fray and a minute later we were ahead when Lewis Schofield chipped the ball forward for Callum Jones to run onto and lob the advancing keeper from close to the goal line. As the ball was heading across the face of goal Potts followed up to force the ball home and give us the points our overall performance deserved. Another tight game but a timely return to winning away from home. Callum Schofield was named man of the match for his consistency throughout and in particular for subduing skipper Xugreb, the main Daisy Hill threat.
Reserve team match reports‌ Saturday 17th November: WEST 0 Runcorn Linnets 1 Last weeks visitors to the Recreation Ground to play West Reserves were Runcorn Linnets, currently situated 9th in the league, one place higher than West. The question was, could West build on their convincing win two weeks ago over Glossop North End. Runcorn started well with several shots going wide of the West goal within the first 10 minutes. However West weathered the storm and began to get a foot hold on the game. In the 15th minute Nathan Wakelam played a lovely ball down the right to Andy Brown who was making his West debut, Andy went round the full back and played the ball into the feet of Stephen Madden, who under pressure had a first time shot which sailed over the bar. West continued to push forward and had a 15 minute spell where they looked by far the better team. During this period Andy Brown came close with several shots which forced the Runcorn keeper into making several saves. Runcorn came back at West with a superb cross from the West right, the Runcorn striker shot low and hard forcing Conrad Betton, making only his second appearance for West Reserves, to make a fine save at full stretch, the ball fell loose and Conrad managed to push the ball away just off the toe of another Runcorn player a wonderful double save from the keeper. The half finished 0-0 with both teams missing opportunities to take the lead. The second half continued in much the same vain as the first with Matt Eckersley and Jon Chrimes both going close for West. With the pitch cutting up badly and both sides pressing forward, Runcorn broke down a West attack and the Runcorn right back played the ball forward which was miss judged by the West defence, the ball fell to the Runcorn striker and a miss timed tackle brought the player down in the penalty area, the referee had no option but to point to the penalty spot. Runcorn subsequently scored from the spot kick to go into the lead in the 65th minute. With 15 minutes to go and the game slipping away West went to a back three pushing Andy Brown further forward in an attempt to get the equiliser, this put Runcorn on the back foot, West continued to pressure the Runcorn defence and made the Runcorn keeper make several more timely saves to deny a West equiliser. Unfortunately the goal didn't come and the game finished West 0 Runcorn 1. NWCFL recent landmarks and news… A number of landmarks were achieved on Tuesday 13th November 2012. Wigan Robin Park’s only goal in their 5-1 defeat at Winsford United, scored by Joseph Hull in the 66th minute, was the Robins’ 300th League goal. Winsford United’s win in the same game saw them pass 900 League points (they are now on 902). Barnoldswick Town passed 250 League points (they are now on 252) thanks to their 2-0 win at Squires Gate. Brad Hubbold’s 43rd minute goal for Holker Old Boys, the third in their 4-0 win over Nelson, was the Cumbrians’ 900th home League goal. Cheadle Town passed 1200 League points (they are now on 1202) courtesy of their 2-1 win at Atherton LR.
Nelson midfielder Adnan Farooq Ahmed is flew out to join up with the Pakistan international squad for two friendly games against Singapore, on 16th & 19th November. Manchester City players James Milner and Scott Sinclair were visitors to Irlam’s Silver Street ground recently to take part in a Nike-hosted training session for the club. STORY?
Newly elected North West Counties League side West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury. West first played in the Manchester Alliance League until the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918). After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as the League did not permit association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A and stayed in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in that league until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. Many of the current committee were players in that league. The club played at Christie Playing Fields from before 1914 but had to relocate when given notice to quit by the Playing Fields Society in the mid 80’s when that body decided to sell the land for commercial gain. After several years nomadic existence the club kicked off the 1997-98 season at their splendid new home at The Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road, and began to develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold and secured the new facilities via a Lottery grant, new sponsors and fundraising, but without a penny of help from the Playing Fields Society proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect our new location in Chorlton and we were elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 Season West won Manchester League silverware for the first time, lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final.
With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, who had previously managed at Leigh RMI, the 2009/10 season was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield, (the third consecutive year we have been in the final) and finishing runners-up in the league. The second team won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic points total (65 points out of 72 possible). This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in the history of the Manchester League dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The clubs ‘A’ team finished and the Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club in every sense. In recent seasons several players who started at West have been signed by top non league clubs, but such is the spirit of the club that many players return to what they see as a family club. The club now looks forward to fulfilling its ambition to play at the highest possible level it can whilst continuing to be run as a community club and transition to the NWCFL. The ground and facilities have been further improved and floodlights erected to meet grading requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. The club was duly elected to the NWCFL at the AGM on 16th June 2012.
