Editorial & Welcome to… Bootle FC This afternoon we welcome manager Joe Doran and everyone from Bootle for their annual visit to The Recreation Ground. Bootle are just below us in the table so this afternoon will be a tight contest between two sides aiming to finish as high as possible. Since the turn of the year Bootle, like most clubs, have suffered a number of postponements, and in the 7 games completed since have become something of the draw specialists of the division. Their 5 draws have come against AFC Blackpool 1-1, Abbey Hey 2-2 , Barnoldswick 1-1, AFC Liverpool 3-3, Nelson 2-2 with their only reversal being a 5-2 away defeat against high flying Atherton Collieries. They played Silsden at home on Thursday night before we went to print for today’s programme. We first played Bottle almost exactly 3 years ago when we travelled to Bootle in the League Challenge Cup 3rd round during our first season in the NWCFL as a Division One club, and were narrowly beaten 2-1 with Scott Jones the West scorer that day. The following 2013/14 season, Bootle won the first league game between us 5-0 in early August as we were struggling to adjust to the Premier Division, but the return fixture here at WEST saw a 4-3 home win with Tommy Walsh 2, Rick Gleave and Graham Kay the West scorers in a tight midweek encounter. Last season we travelled to Bootle in November and came away with a 2-1 victory courtesy of goals from Nic Evangelinos and Alex Baird but Bottle turned the tables on us twice in 2015 winning the league challenge cup quarter final tie here 3-0 in February, including a wonderful strike from distance for their first goal, and then winning 4-1 here again in March when Short was the lone West scorer. This season we repeated the away victory at Bootle 2-1 in early September when Matt Eckersley and Ash Woods were on target for WEST and this afternoon promises to be another close game with Bootle wanting to get back to winning ways after a difficult period since Christmas. PREMIER DIVISION CLUB OF THE MONTH - FEB 2016 - WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON It was very pleasing to read the above headline on the NWCFL website News last Tuesday afternoon. Many congratulations to Steve Settle, Steve Brockley and all the management team and squad on winning the award as a result of their 100% record during February. The results, just in case anyone had forgotten were: 06.02 - AFC Liverpool (away) won 2 - 6 13.02 - Silsden (home) won 2 - 1 27.02 - Padiham (away) won 1 - 3 The award of club of the month is usually a jinx for the recipients but fortunately we came through 2-0 in a keenly contested game against Winsford on Tuesday night. The difference between the two sides was emphasised by the chances we created and the two excellent and clinical finishes from Nic Evangelinos midway through the first half and Scott Mason after 71 minutes. In between Winsford huffed and puffed but could not get a shot on target and full marks to the defence for another clean sheet. Every single game in this league is really competitive, as we find out every week, and with several games on the road coming up it would be good to keep the momentum going this afternoon before we travel away to face both Runcorn sides, Atherton Collieries and Colne. The remaining fixtures will be a good test of how far we have progressed this season, especially after a difficult opening ten games when we struggled to get points on the board. Since then our form has been excellent and but for that poor start our league position would be even higher. REMAINING HOME FIXTURES We’re back home again next Monday evening at 7.45pm when we host our friends from Abbey Hey. After that we have just two home games left staring on Easter Monday 28th March v Maine Road at 3pm and then on Saturday 30th April v. AFC Blackpool for the final game of the season. Steve Settle’s Notes Good Afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for this afternoon’s fixture against Bootle. It’s a pleasure to be able to welcome their management team, players, officials, and fans for what will be a tough game at the top end of the NWCFL Premier Division. Bootle come into today’s game in 7th position, 5 points behind us but with a game in hand. We will be looking to build on our excellent recent performances and cement our place in the league’s top 6. It was obviously very pleasing to look at the league table on Sunday evening and see us sitting in 5th position. An appropriate reward for the hard work and commitment that has gone into this season, particularly from my players! I was delighted to see on the NWCFL website on Tuesday morning that we won the Premier Division ‘Team of the Month’ for February, this is the first time we have received this accolade. While I am delighted for the club and my management team the credit must go to the boys who have played well in this period to collect 3 wins, 2 of them away from home against well established NWCFL teams in AFC Liverpool and Padiham. Later in the day I was delighted that the ‘Team of the Month’ jink that may have come our way didn’t, as we turned in another strong performance to deservedly beat Winsford United 2-0 in a very competitive game. It was important that we got the three points which allows us to move on to today’s game. Brocks, Steve Eck, Rob and I have been looking at our squad more closely in the last few weeks and we will continue to do so from now until the end of the season. It’s important that the boys show us that they are capable of putting a serious run together, with a level of consistency that allows us to win games.
This test will come in the run-in as we are still to play Linnets, Colls and Colne all away from home. It’s fair to say we can have a pretty big say in who wins the league. Selfishly, I don’t really care who wins our league, I want us to show in the games from now until the end of the season that we have what it takes with our current group to be in a position to challenge in 12 months’ time. If not we will be looking to add to our group and strengthen for next season. On the injury front we have been delighted to get Matt Eck back in the team. Matt has been an outstanding performer for us this season at centre half and it will give us a great boost to get him back in the squad. In addition Richmond Botchey and Scott Jones are both stepping up their recovery and have re-joined training sessions and although we are taking Winston and Paddy’s advice on a weekly basis we are hopeful that they may return to action in March. Looking forward we now have 11 league games remaining and to hit our target of 70 points we still need 21 (7 wins). With only 4 of these games at home we will have to be at our very best, starting with today! Thanks for the support and enjoy the game!

West 2 Winsford United 0 …match report West, newly crowned as February’s NWCFL club of the month, made it four league wins in a row with a hard fought victory at home to a combative Winsford United side. Having sat out the weekends round of fixtures due to the weather West were boosted by the sides around them failure to make up significant ground and new a win would take them four points clear of Maine Road in 5th position. Manager Steve Settle was forced into just one change to his starting line up with Ben Steer replacing the absent Mark Rogers but was forced to call himself and his assistant Steve Brockley onto the bench for the second consecutive game. Winsford were looking to bounce back from consecutive defeats and it showed in the opening minutes as Hayden Buckley-Smith was called into action after eight minutes to parry away a hard shot from a narrow angle. West responded and almost took the lead when a long Ben Steer throw was headed into the hands of the grateful Winsford goalkeeper Dale Latham. The opening 20 minutes saw very few clear cut chances as both midfields battled for the upper hand; but it was Buckley-Smith in the West goal who was slightly the busier as he was called into action to make two comfortable saves after Winsford twice pulled back crosses from the by-line. However it was West who took the lead on 25 minutes when a wonderful quick passing move out of the defence found Matty Kay in the midfield. Kay lifted his pass perfectly over the full backs head into the path of Nic Evangelinos who burst into the penalty and fired an unstoppable shot passed the Winsford keeper at his near post to give Evangelinos his 14th goal of the season. The goal lifted West and they finished the half the brighter of the two teams when on 33 minutes Evangelinos jinxed his way past two Winsford defenders but could only fire his shot wide of the post. The danger signs were still there for West’s defence as two minutes later a low cross was deflected into the path of Ryan Mellor but he could only fire wide. On 36 minutes a West corner was knocked down into the path of Anthony Potts but the stand-in captain could only fire his shot over the bar. West continued their search for a second and a minute later Gary Lilley ran the length of the pitch having won the ball from a Winsford throw in but his shot could only sting the goalkeeper’s palms. West finished the half strongly; on 38 minutes another counter attack, which had started with Callum Jones winning possession back near his own corner flag, saw West race up the field with Ash Woods low cross being turned inches past the post by Kay.

Two minutes later West were in again as Lee Gavin’s low effort rolled just wide of the post. The final chance of the half came two minutes before half time and was arguably the best as West again countered, Evangelinos played in Steer who fired over from a narrow angle. The first chance of the second half came on 50 minutes as another long Ben Steer throw found the head of Kay but he headed over. The opening minutes of the second half very much matched the opening minutes of the first half as both teams struggled to create chances. Gary Lilley went in the book for a push off the ball before Hayden BuckleySmith collected a yellow on 62 minutes when he raced out his goal to claim a throughball and caught the Winsford forward after he had shot towards goal. The effort was wide but the referee brought it back for a free kick and booked the West goalkeeper. West responded immediately and a wonderful curling pass from Lee Gavin released Ben Steer but his shot from a tight angle only troubled the netting behind the goal. The chance from the free kick lifted Winsford however and he was called upon to make a save with his shins after the ball had passed along the edge of the West penalty area. The game became increasingly open as players dived into challenges with Winsford’s Andrew Hammond entering the book for a late challenge after Lilley had sped past him. The continual allowance of such challenges would cost West as Callum Jones night was ended prematurely on 67 minutes when he cleared the ball inside the West penalty area only to be kicked heavily after the ball had gone, forcing him from the game. The referee failed to award a free kick for the challenge and it almost cost West as the corner was worked short and the ball punted into the box from deep. Buckley-Smith came to collect under his crossbar but was adjudged to have been pushed off it in the process much to the dismay of the visiting dugout who continued their protests for several minutes afterwards. Set Pieces also became West’s weapon of choice as first a header at the far post was saved spectacularly by Latham before Potts headed wide from another. West continued to enjoy the counter attack as Lilley was again scythed down from behind two footed but the referee only chose to award a free kick was Lilley was forced to unfold himself from the challenge. The game was won five minutes from time as some quick passing through the middle from sub Jonny Poizer and Gavin found Kay in front of goal, his improvised pass was hooked into the path of Scott Mason, replacing Callum Jones, who was given the time and the space to drill his shot across the goalkeeper into the bottom left hand corner to give them one of their hardest fought victories of the season.

West and Bootle have met at least once in every season since West joined the NWCFL in 2012. The first ever meeting came at the Delta Taxis Stadium on February 16th 2013 as the two sides met in what is now known as the MEN United Cup final. Despite Scott Jones giving West the lead on 41 minutes Bootle levelled just before half time before finding an 88th minute winner to send them into the semifinals. Promotion would follow for West and the two sides would meet again on August 10th 2013 in the Premier Division with Bootle running out 5-0 winners on Merseyside. Whilst Bootle taught West a harsh lesson on finishing in the first meeting that season the two sides played out a thriller at Brookburn Road in the return match on November 9th. Goals from Graham Kay, Rick Gleave and a Tommy Walsh brace put West into a commanding 4-1 lead before two late goals saw Bootle pull it back to 4-3 to ensure a nervy final.
The following season West registered their first ever win at Bootle as they registered a 2-1 win on November 8th, 2014. Nic Evangelinos gave West a 58th minute lead before Bootle levelled on 82 minutes. Jordan Hitchen followed up with a penalty save before Alex Baird registered an 87th minute winner to secure the three points. Fate would pair the two sides again in the MEN United Cup Quarter Final on Valentines Day 2015 as the Dutch Uncles released their fourth album before the game. A bumper crowd of 133 sadly saw a depleted West side succumb to their first home loss to Bootle 0-3. It was a case of déjà vu three weeks later when Bootle returned in the league and dismantled West 41 with Dave Short netting the only goal for the home side. The most recent meeting again came at the Delta Taxis Stadium back in September as a West side win just won league win to their name fell a goal down after 60 seconds before Matt Eckersley levelled on 17 minutes before an Ash Woods strike handed Bootle all three points on 55 minutes.

Last March in The FA Trophy, in front of the BT cameras, North Ferriby United triumphed 5-4 on penalties against Wrexham, following a dramatic 3-3 draw. It was the Villagers’ first ever triumph in the competition in their history. Then in May Glossop North End and North Shields battled out The FA Vase in front of over 10,000 fans, with the side from the northeast being victorious 2-1 after extra time.
Then I missed two penalties at Brookburn Road… As much as anything, the fact that I no longer dream about playing football at the highest level probably shows how I’m getting old. Not daydreaming about how I could probably do a job for a Championship team (ridiculously, that still happens), but actually, properly dreaming. The last one I remember was a particularly great example of my subconsciouses’ oeuvre - turning out for Manchester United, scoring two own goals before whipping off my top to reveal a Leeds shirt underneath to ovation from the away end. I presumed these dreams would last throughout my adult life, little fragments of joy to cherish in amongst the usual nonsensical stuff that floats through your mind most nights. Then I missed two penalties at Brookburn Road. Maybe there’s no correlation between the missed and my football dreams going AWOL. Like most men slowly marching towards middle aged, I’ve had my fair share of embarrassment on the football pitch - my own mental highlight reel of own goals & gaffs puts anything Danny Baker ever narrated to shame. For example, my first (and only) appearance for our school team ended with us getting beaten 7-0 by our local rivals. However, the match was most remembered by friend and foe alike for me, alone just outside our penalty area, attempting to diving header a free ball off the ground. Worse than that, I missed - ending with a face full of mud and our keeper having to calmly come out to loft the ball up field, opposition players nowhere in sight. But I’ve missed two penalties at Brookburn Road. In my defence, the penalty misses were put upon me out of the blue. The Valentine’s Day home game against Bootle, sponsored by celebrity West fans and indie royalty Dutch Uncles to launch their album O Shudder, was to feature a band vs fans shootout at half time. Gearing up to enjoy laughing at whichever saps they’d chosen to go up against, I’d already downed my second Kromsy when I was asked if I fancied a go. Filled with the spirit of Southgate ‘96, I couldn’t let my fellow ultras down by turning down the call. And then I missed two penalties at Brookburn Road.
idea when I took my first step upon the hallowed turf or hallowed mud bath, as it was that day. Not to excuse my performance, but bomber jackets, skinny jeans and Dr Martens shoes weren’t made for sports at the best of times, and I admit to being spooked when I saw some of the opposition wearing football boots worth more than my entire outfit. I can’t remember if I stepped up first or second - the intoxicating mixture of adrenaline in my blood and two lagers in my stomach blocked that out - but I do remember the run up. Grass giving way beneath my feet, my thoughts weren’t focused on putting the ball past the keeper, but on staying upright. I’d missed a penalty at Brookburn Road. Fellow fans behind the goal said that they could see in my body language I was never going to score, but laughed regardless when their predictions came true. Sliced wide, I hadn’t even made their keeper work - in fact, he didn’t even bother to move, the miss pre-ordained from the moment I started my run-up. My teammates offered some consolation, but wouldn’t look me in the eye. They knew as well as I did that I’d fucked up. Yet, as the shootout tied and the we needed a taker to go again in sudden death, I put myself forward for a second round of humiliation. Despite the fact we all knew what was about to happen, no-one stopped me. And, of course, I missed a second penalty at Brookburn Road. Sliced in the same precise way that the first was (to the left of the goal, metres wide and with so little pace as it could aptly be described as trundling), I’ve chosen to see the twin misses as a blessing. Few people can really pinpoint the moment in which their childhood fantasies were killed off. West lost the game 3-0, I drank some more Krombacher and went back home, changed forever. 3.56pm, 14th February 2015 - the moment the dreaming stopped for good. Matt Britton

History of Bootle FC The original Bootle F.C. were formed in 1880 and played at Hawthorne Road. They were in fact Everton FC’s biggest rivals. The Bucks where the first ever winners of the Liverpool Senior Cup, had in their ranks the first black footballer in Andrew Watson and regularly had bigger crowds than their neighbours. In 1889–90 Bootle became founder members of the Football Alliance, narrowly missing out on the football league the previous season. That season was the most successful as we finished league runners-up, reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where we lost to Blackburn Rovers (0-7). When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite a respectable 8th place final position, the club dropped out after one season due to financial difficulties and the attraction of Everton playing in the First Division. They were replaced by new neighbours, Liverpool. Football returned to the town when a new club was formed with the help of Bootle Council. The club initially played in the Liverpool Leagues until 1948 when the club were elected to the Lancashire Combination 2, which was won at the first attempt. The club was granted a new ground on Maguire Avenue (now known as Bootle Stadium). However, Bootle struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons withdrew and folded during the 1953– 54 campaign. In 1953, the current club was formed originally as Langton and played in the local leagues. After a very successful spell in the Liverpool County Combination (which was won on
numerous occasions) the club reverted back to its better known identity of Bootle FC in 1973. A year later the Bucks joined the Lancashire Combination, which was won in 1976 and 1977. Bootle then joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which was won in our first season, and we were promoted to the First Division. In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a founder member of the First Division. The club spent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when we unfortunately dropped into the Second Division. However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club, having to move away from Bucks Park on Copy Lane, dropped into the Liverpool County Combination. After several seasons of work behind the scenes and survival on the pitch the Bucks finally acquired a new home. In 2006 the club, with a new venue on a developing Vesty Road, the club were elected back into Division 2 of the North West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCL Premier Division and also won the Championship under the guidance of Chris O’Brien. In 2009/10, our first season back in the NWCFL Premier Division Bootle finished a NWCFL highest placing of 3rd. In 2010/11 finished 6th place. They equalled the 3rd place again in 2012 this time with Neil Prince at the helm. Prince also lifted the Senior Cup as Bootle manager - the first to do so in 100 years. After an indifferent second season Prince was replaced by Joseph Doran. Doran has gone about to replenish the squad with exciting local young players and all at the club are hoping these lads fulfil their potential.

In case of fire or other emergency that requires the clubhouse or ground to be evacuated instructions will be given over the public address system, and we ask that you comply with those instructions immediately. The chanting of racist or obscene chanting is strictly forbidden. Glasses, bottles, gas canisters, knives, darts, tools, flag poles or any other articles likely to cause injury are not permitted into the ground. Alcohol may be purchased and consumed in the bar area only. Children are not allowed in the Club House unless accompanied by an adult. Encroachment onto the playing area is forbidden at all times.
